Re: [RBW] New tire

2016-03-03 Thread Jim Bronson
The Michelin Pro 2/3/4 Race/Endurance are great tires if you can get them
for a reasonable price. I just don't have a bike anymore that they are
suitable for. I don't run anything under 38mm. But when I did have a bike
that would take 28s I ran the "25" labeled version for a number of years
with highly satisfactory results.

[RBW] Re: Used Rambouillet Value?

2016-03-03 Thread Mark Williams
As I mentioned in my first post, this is the 2nd frame I received from Riv.
The first had the rear brake bridge too high so the pads touched the tire-
of course you find this out when the build is about complete... But that
frame had fancier lugwork- it was a long time ago but I think the
chainstays at the BB was nicer and maybe another area of lugs. But mine is
another batch.

Les - yes, exactly! Only now I'm really confused because I thought that
the very last batch of Ram's sold were painted green. So...if the same
Japanese shop that brazed together the originals did the entire run they

[RBW] Re: on bike bag theft

2016-03-03 Thread M D Smith

Many many moons ago, I bought a limited-release deep ("Northumbrian"
according to GP) green Lowsaddle Longflap from Rivendell. (A short run was
mentioned in the "Progress Report" in an early Reader [remember those
days?] with a "give us a call if you want to buy one" directive.)

I was living in Austin, TX at the time and I was assistant brewer at the
late, great Waterloo Brewing Company. (RIP- at the corner of 4th and
Guadalupe across form Republic Square Park, for those in Austin.) One of
the first days I had it strapped on my bike I had ridden to work and locked
up to a street sign on Guadalupe, right in front of a giant plate glass
window. On the other side of this window was Waterloo's "brew house"- the
set of kettles where the brew is actually made. I started mashing in the
morning's brew. "Mashing in" is the first step in the brewing process and
it involves mixing the ground barley with hot water with a large stainless
steel paddle. Imagine a metal version of a canoe paddle. And lots of
steam, and it's really heavy, that paddle. Brewing ain't easy.

Well, the grain started coming down, the water was steaming hot, and the
brew was under way. As was usual, my eyeglasses started to fog up, so I
turned my head away from the open vat of steaming water. As my glasses
slowly cleared, I happened to be looking out the plate glass window. I
found myself silently admiring my "horseless horse" and it's classy new
saddlebag just as an extremely unsavory character (no shirt, long scraggly
hair, beat up mountain bike) coasted down Guadalupe and slowed to a stop
right beside my trusty steed. To my horror this nefarious miscreant
proceeded to pull a humongous Bowie knife out of his backpack and set
himself upon cutting the leather straps attaching my beautiful new
Carradice to my perfectly broken-in Brooks saddle!!!

Time slowed to a crawl as my brain attempted to process what my eyes were
seeing... Instinct kicked in. I screamed "Hey!!!" at the top of my lungs
(impotently, as the thick glass stifled any chance my shout could startle
the reprobate) and attempted to slam my fist against the glass. The
brewhouse platform upon which I stood was just a bit too far away from the
window for me to connect. My coworker, startled by my outburst, quickly
assessed what was happening. She tore out the door to confront the
evildoer. As a spied the knife beginning to slice into the fine English
cowhide I lost any semblance of reason. Without further thought, I drew
the forty pound, stainless steel mash paddle out of the mash tun and heaved
it towards the window. Julie, by this point, was out the door and yelled
as she rounded the corner of the building onto the street. Her cry was
enough to startle the ne'er-do-well. He sheathed his blade, casually
mounted his junker, and rolled away down the hill as if nothing had
happened (thank God, because in all the commotion no one had thought to
consider that a 90 pound woman was rushing outside to confront a
knife-wielding ruffian...)

My senses suddenly snapped back to the present and I realized instantly
that not only was my bag safe, but I was swinging a giant piece of metal at
a plate glass window. My muscles tensed up and I managed to halt the
paddle mid-swing, flinging a clod of oatmeal-like mash on to the window but
stopping with just an inch to spare before surely shattering the glass and
any hope of my continued employment at the storied brewpub.

The clod of mash slowly congealed and began sliding down the window as I
returned my attention to the task at hand, continuing to mash in the brew I
had just started. My adrenaline rush began to subside and I thanked Julie
for thinking quick and saving my handsome new Carradice. Once all the
grain was safely mixed in, I went out and brought my bike into a more
protected spot inside the brewery's courtyard.

I had one other (earlier) experience on that same block. Another scoundrel
attempted to cut the padlock off my cable lock with bolt cutters wrapped up
in a t-shirt. I actually caught him mid-snip. (Austin, and particularly
that block, was significantly more seedy in the mid '90s than it is
now...) I luckily arranged a much more secure indoor parking situation
after that and now insist on a stouter U-lock.

But yes, you are correct Patrick, the biggest variable is where you leave
the bike. I now live in New York City and I consider these all valuable
lessons learned.

I still have that green Carradice Lowsaddle Longflap and kept it on that
bike for years after this episode. It's pretty much worn out-
sun-bleached, patched, stitched-up, and basically retired. I replaced the
one partially cut strap, but kept the original as a memento. In the "big
city" I have taken to using a single pannier, removing it and bringing it
with me whenever I leave the bike. I would not leave *anything* attached
my bike here... (And I've jammed BBs and

[RBW] FS - 4 Biopace rings

2016-03-03 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've pulled 4 Shimano 110 BCD Biopace rings from the parts bin and cleaned
them up for you die-hards. (Two) 46T; one, a Biopace-HP; one a Biopace II;
a 36T middle; a 26T inner. All used and in good condition, except for the
middle ring, which has shark-teeth and not likely good to go.

[RBW] Re: on bike bag theft

I had a seat post, saddle, and Carradice stolen in one fell swoop one night
as it sat unattended outside of work in downtown Portland, Oregon. In over
10 years in the same neighborhood, this happened just the once, but it was
painful! It can definitely happen.

[RBW] Re: New tire

2016-03-03 Thread Jack K
Hey Don and fellow iBOB's,

This is quite a timely post! I was shopping online for Michelin Pro4
Endurance 700x28 tires this morning. The 28mm Endurance has been out for a
while, but there's not much user info or reviews of them available online.
My main question is actual size of the 700x28 labelled tire. Can you
provide some insight on that?

I've been running the 700x25 Pro4 Service Course, which measures
considerably bigger (I measure just under 27mm wide on my Open Pro rims).
Hopefully the 700x28 Endurance are also bigger than marked. But by how
much?? Here's a very interesting write-up of the Pro4 Endurance V2 tire on
BicycleRollingResistance.com:
http://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/road-bike-reviews/michelin-pro-4-endurance-v2-2015
The reviewer measured the Pro4 Endurance V2 700x25 at 28 mm wide --
seriously oversized. Note that the Endurance model has thicker tread than
the Service Course, as well as a bead to bead breaker layer for flat
protection on both the tread and sidewall. This is not a fragile racing
tire, yet it scores extremely well in the referenced rolling resistance
tests.

Another tire I'm very interested in is the Continental GP4000S II in the
largest 700x28 size. BicycleRollingResistance.com measured this tire at a
whopping 31mm wide and it appears to garner even lower rolling resistance
scores in their testing, though it also appears to be less long lived and
have less protection than the Pro4 Endurance. Anyone running the Conti
GP4000S II in 700x28?

Patrick's experience with Pro4 Service Course and Elk Pass tires is
interesting, but perhaps not a very "apples to apples" comparison. As he
stated, his Pro4 SC's (which I suspect were the original V1 model, which
had higher rolling resistance than the more substantial V2 Endurance)
measured a dainty 22mm wide, while the Compass Elk Pass tires measured a
much more girthy 28mm (though far from the marked 32mm size).

Anyone else with firsthand user experience with the big 700x28 versions of
the Pro4 Endurance or GP4000S II?

[RBW] Re: on bike bag theft

2016-03-03 Thread masmojo
I recently got a new Swift saddlebag and I have been having similar concerns,
I've only used cheap bags in the past so it's uncomfortable new territory. My
first thought is that any thief is probably going to want to take the whole
bike! The bag and/or it's contents are going to be a secondary plan and even if
they are not secured would require time to deal with. I try not to linger
anywhere that something of this nature will be a problem.
This brings up the other obvious concern, either park it in a high visibility
area hopping that although any thief can see it he will also be self conscious
about stealing anything OR park it in a secluded area hoping no one will notice
it, but then no one would notice someone messing with it either.
As someone else said making it look crappy would certainly be effective, but I
can't bring myself to do that! Now if years of beausage made it less appealing
thats fine & preferable to me.

I would be interested to hear the comparison between the Riv Road / LongLow

heavier OS tubing than most 753 bikes (which were primarily racers, it

I liked my blue Ram, but found it rather overbuilt and sedate in handling
for a gofast -- it made a very good commuting and errand bike, but I
already had a Riv custom for that, so I sold it.

But for a sort of "road all rounder," it is a very good design.

[RBW] Re: on bike bag theft

Hello,

While living in Tucson (high theft) I used a small travel/ luggage cable lock.
The cable was about 1/8 inch and went out the bag with the strap, through the
seat rails, and back in the bag on the other side. The lock was in the bag
itself. Did it help? Who really knows but I never lost a bag and felt much more
comfortable leaving the bike. The lock was like $5.

Cheers,
Chris

Yeah...it does look like an old Ideale 90, doesn't it? Those were/are fine
saddles..I have it on my PX-10 and it is still going strong...embossing on
the side is pretty much worn smooth though.

I'm pretty sure the early Riv Roads and LongLows were as light and as
fast as the Rambouillet, and of course the custom Rivs could be anything
you wanted. But I agree, the Rambouillet and Roadeo represent a style
of bike the company seems to have moved away from in recent years.

[RBW] Re: Used Rambouillet Value?

2016-03-03 Thread David Banzer
I think the Ram/Roadeo comparison is key here. If you regret selling your
Ram, the Roadeo would be the current Riv equivalent, which is currently
$2200 for a frameset. I've not been riding my Redwood (geometrically the
same as a later run Ram) as much as I'd like, but winter riding is limited
for recreational rides for me. I'll likely never get rid of it, no matter
what. FWIW, pricing-wise, I bought my Redwood not too long ago for $1000
shipped and it had some pretty nice components on it that I parted out. I
considered it a steal, but a 65cm frame has a limited audience I suppose,
so probably a reasonable price for the seller as well.
Also, some have converted Ram's to 650b successfully. I did this with my
Redwood for a bit, but have since recently returned it to its original 700c
wheel size - fits Barlow Pass tires nicely. It'll certainly be a fun ride
come warmer temps.

If I had to downsize, I'd keep the nicest bike I had and just ride it

The other thing is, once you sell a Rambouillet, you ain't gettin' it or
any other 'booyay back too easily. NIB Rambouillet is even tougher to find.
A couple years ago I saw a green one NIB on ebay.

So make sure you rey want to sell it before doing so, as they
aren't in production anymore.

Unless I am wrong, the Ram and the Roadeo are probably the lightest and
fastest bikes Riv ever made, so if you like that kind of thing, don't let

Another thing. After having ridden only my Sam for a long time, one day I

[RBW] Re: on bike bag theft

2016-03-03 Thread drew
i leave a carradice barley on one bike and a saddlesack medium on the
other. both are zip-tied and both have a small cable that runs through some
leather part of the bag, rack, and saddle rail. not theft proof by any
means, but so far it has been enough to deter thievery of the bag itself. i
have had weird random stuff taken from the bag that i didnt notice
immediately- patch kit, mini pump, wrench...oddly on 3 separate occasions.
i mean, why take a patch kit and not a pump, then a pump but not a patch
kit..

anyway...i live in los angeles, have had 2 bikes stolen (though at the
time, i wasnt locking up in the best way and left them overnight), and am
now pretty conservative about location of locking and duration of time
locked up.

Mark - several comments: first, I agree with some responders that you

[RBW] Re: on bike bag theft

2016-03-03 Thread Bill Lindsay
Since you are going to zip-tie it or similar, you should also ask how many
people have had a basket stolen.

Everyone has heard of a saddle/seatpost being stolen, and a thief with a
multi-tool could unbolt a $200 Nitto rack in about a minute, so there is
definitely a degree of risk no matter what when you leave valuable things
unattended. It's a matter of how much you trust your particular
environment and then deciding whether or not to take on that risk.

I'm personally on the very trusting side of the spectrum and have not been
burned yet.

[RBW] Re: on bike bag theft

2016-03-03 Thread David Banzer
I've used leather strips, made holes in the ends, then bolted the ends
together after attaching a saddlebag. It lived on a bike for a year or so
that was locked up outside during weekdays. Never had any problems, of
course, I never left anything in it.
With panniers that would stay semi-permanently on a rack, I'd probably use
small p-clamps around the rack tubing and bolts the bag onto the rack. To
take it one step further, you could use security bolts:
http://www.bicyclebolts.com/
In that scenario, I'd use security bolts to attach the rack to bike -
someone could just take the whole rack w/ bags!
It really depends on where you're locking up, and how long you're leaving
the bike. If I'm popping into a shop for a few minutes, I don't bother
taking bags off.

2016-03-03 Thread S. Greco
Sorry I misspoke, or mistyped rather, the cassette is technically an 8
speed cassette of which I am currently running 6 speeds.
It is a Shimano XT M737. These come in different flavors apparently and if
you get one with the raised volcano on the back side it will need to be
machined down to just above the rivet, or just less than 1cm removed from
the raised area I have circled in red. This is very easy to do on a lathe
or mill and really shouldn't be done with any other tools that could leave
that side not parallel to the face of the cassette body. The older ones
which are flat on the backside should fit fine.

Well if yours is "in the stand" it definitely will be ready. They have to
fire through at least a few per day, and Mark has one workstation. Unless
he's waiting for parts or something he's not going to set yours aside to
work on somebody else's. Enjoy it.

2016-03-03 Thread S. Greco
Sorry I misspoke, or mistyped rather, the cassette is technically an 8
speed cassette of which I am currently running 6 speeds.
It is a Shimano XT M737. These come in different flavors apparently and if
you get one with the raised volcano on the back side it will need to be
machined down to just above the rivet, or just less than 1cm removed from
the area I have circled in red. This is very easy to do on a lathe and
really shouldn't be done with any other tools that could leave that side
not parallel to the face of the cassette body. The older ones which are
flat on the backside should fit fine.

[RBW] on bike bag theft

2016-03-03 Thread Patrick D Kelly
I'm fishing for stories pro/con dealing with leaving bags "permanently"
attached to your bike, and if they've been stolen.

I'm contemplating getting a pair of backabike bags and leaving them
attached (probably with zipties somehow). Anybody ever had any of these (or
similar) bags stolen off their bike? I'm imagining it's not even worthwhile
for a thief since they're not gonna get but a few bucks for such a thing.

As a counter-example to what I just said, one time some gloves were stolen
out of a bag on a bike. In this case, I'm sure it was just cuz the thief
had to do zero work. Unzip and just grab what was in the bag. That bag was
seriously attached, and was not stolen.

In my imagination, riv's saddlesacks are "safer" because to somebody
unfamiliar, it's very confusing. The straps and the 2 layers of flap make
me think that thieves are not going to go poking around in there. Any
thoughts/experience on this?

thanks

p.s. Yes, the biggest variable in all this is where/when you leave your
bike unattended. Let's just pretend that I'm very conservative about
where/when I leave my bike locked up.

Re: [RBW] Re: Clem w/drop bars

2016-03-03 Thread Patrick Moore
Zed -- very well put. You are very right that bar height and stem length
(and st angle) can make a huge difference; something I forgot when I posted
earlier.

I recall the 56 cm Sam Hill I owned: it had a 59 cm tt, while I prefer 56
or 57. But the sta was 71, not my usual 73, so this took care of about half
of the "excess tt length," and raising the bar about 6 cm above my normal
road postion (road bikes about 3 cm below saddle; Sam about 3 cm above)
brought the bar back further, and the position was quite comfortable,
though different from that on my road bikes.

However, when I found a Fargo, with road-bike-length tt, I found I
preferred the position on that, even if it didn't have the typical
Rivendell feel overall.

So, Steve Sweedler, your question makes more sense than it appeared to me
at first, and I'll be interested in learning, if you do install a drop bar,
how it feels.

2016-03-03 Thread masmojo
Honestly, I think you could put drops on a Clem. It would mearly be a matter
of finding a short technomic or similar stem, I'd suggest a 60mm reach.
That said my overwhelming reaction is why? I would just get a Sam or a Joe!
Yeah, it's a bit more money, but . . .

[RBW] FS: 58cm Saluki Custom Color

2016-03-03 Thread Bill
I'm on my second custom color Saluki. I traded a Corvette green 60 for a light
purple in the same size. That light green is awesome. It's great when new
buyers (or later owners) break from the herd and add to the spectrum. FWIW, I
think his price is in the ballpark, particularly for someone pining for a 650b
Homerish bike.

[RBW] Re: AW 114 mm OL hub on QB or SO?

2016-03-03 Thread JohnS
Hello Patrick,

I'm pretty sure my 2 speed Bendix hub is 114 as well. I moved one of
the wide washers from out board of the drop out to be in board. This nudged
it up to about 118, which I though was close enough to 120. I used a chain
tug since my hub is fixed. Adding in the thickness of the QB drop out left
insufficient space for the axel nuts that came with the hub. So I ground
down the nuts on the bench grinder since they were pretty wide. I may have
taken off maybe 1/5 the width of the nuts. Works fine. The chain tug does
the work of keeping the wheel in place.

Hopes this helps,
JohnS

[RBW] Re: Clem w/drop bars

2016-03-03 Thread Zed Martinez
Oh, and for the curious, my C17 on my Clem is as far forwards as it goes on
the rails. On the Fuji it was more in the middle. So, I have a lot of room
to go back, but no room to go forwards. And the C17 has pretty decent rail
lengths. So, chalk that up as another point the 'swept-back bar' column,
fit-wise.

[RBW] Re: Clem w/drop bars

2016-03-03 Thread Zed Martinez
I have some thoughts on this, after a winter of various ugly wind
conditions and trying to find the position I like best on my Clem. One is,
the stack and reach if you measure them out on the Clems is not nearly as
extreme as the bikes look. Part of that whole 'expanded frame' notion. For
the 52 H I get real stack and reach of about 580 and 407. If you use the
provided headset, the effective stack and reach are closer to 620 and 394.
All of which are pretty intense for road bikes, but aren't actually
disfavorable against adventure bikes like the Soma Wolverine and VO Piolet.
With one catch. The 52cm Clem measures out like a non-Clem frame a couple
sizes larger. Those numbers line up about the same as a L Piolet or a 58cm
Wolverine. (Just for comparison, on paper the stack and reach compare
pretty true to size against the Surly Pugsley and Ogre, both of which are
clearly more mountainish upright bar bikes, just to show what the Clem aims
to be by the numbers.)

OK, so, that's the on-paper stuff. You don't have to look at that long on
the actual Clem frame to feel that maybe stack and reach aren't quite
telling the whole story this time though:

http://zedmartinez.com/samples/clem-stack-reach.png

That's a lot of the relevant part of the bike sitting behind the bottom
bracket, no matter how you slice it. It certainly lends a lot of weight to
the 'designed for upright bars argument.' I think there might still be a
few cases where you can cheat that, but I think cheat is probably the right
word. For most riders, the offset from the BB the seat tube angle provides,
available saddle rail adjustment range, and low choice of seat posts with
smaller set-backs will probably be enough to leave the Clem best suited for
upright bars. But, for the super curious, my thoughts on trying it anyway
(since I've been thinking about it myself ever since the first guy
suggested why not drops when these were first announced).

I think the key is how if you want to fit it as a drop bar bike then it's
effectively several sizes larger than how it's meant to be fit. I'm a PBH
of 81 or so, which puts me kind of on the low end fit-wise of my 52cm H
Clem. I traced out the fit on it against my old 54cm Fuji road bike that
held a lot of the parts now on my Clem for me last year. For the same
saddle height (around 70-71 depending on how I eyeball it that day), they
aren't atrociously different in the end, other than the Clem clearly having
the bars much, much higher.

http://zedmartinez.com/samples/clem-vs-fuji.jpg

However, that was using a 100mm Technomic Deluxe on the Fuji, but an 80mm
Dirt Drop sunk literally as low as the Clem allows on the Clem. I had to
put a longer stem on the Fuji to make the albstaches work for me. When I
used drops on it, it was most comfortable with the 80mm Nitto standard
quill it came with. So, if I was to try the same thing as a starting point
for fitting drops on my own Clem, I'd have to find something with 20mm less
reach than that Dirt Drop stem, and that's going to be tough-to-impossible.
If I just put drops on my Dirt Drop I could probably still use them, but
I'd be in what Thorn calls a "sporty" position, and, that seems to defeat
the point of going to a modern Rivendell for me.

http://zedmartinez.com/samples/bike-position.png

But, I think if I was on the larger end of a given Clem's fit range,
instead of the smaller end, it might just be possible to use drops and have
it be in a normal position range. It'd still run long, like an adventure
bike or an old drop-bar mountain bike. But, isn't that effectively what
this is? It wouldn't ever fit like a Sam or a Roadeo or any other more
normal 'road' bike with drops, but I think with a short stem and the saddle
way up fitting it more like a compact frame and less like an expanded one,
there may be some people who could put a drop on and not be unhappy. I'm
not saying I'll ever try (my albastache might still be too aggressive on it
for me, we'll see once the weather stops beating me up so much and I can
tell what's the bike and what's just riding 40 minutes in a 30mph
headwind), but yeah. If you're well aware of what you like and how far you
can reach, and you size on the larger end of a Clem to fit it more like a
bike several sizes larger... maybe? I think it's the limitation of just the
3 sizes more than the long top tube keeping it from being easier to play
with the idea of drops. If it came in 5-7 sizes it'd be a little easier to
misuse the sizing intentions and cheat that, but with only the handful it
seems like only a selection of people will be able to play around like
that. Anyone in the middle of the size range would have a harder time
dropping to the next size down and not just being cramped, I think.

For most people, upright bars at least make more sense. And for that
Rivendell bars higher and closer fit ("very relaxed" or "relaxed" by
Thorn's nomenclature), vs a "fairly relaxed" or
