I had my cell phone pop out of the holder I'd secured in my basket. I was crossing a very busy road with three lanes of traffic in each direction so I scampered across the street without my phone and watched 50 cars or so miss it before a truck came along and squished it like a bug. I found a

[RBW] A question about frame bags

2017-10-29 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Hi Tim, I respond also having no first hand experience with them (aside from a mini diy corner frame bag from a military surplus gas mask bag) but my understanding is that going rackless not only saves weight but putting the heaviest items inside the main triangle won’t affect the handling as

Giro ski helmet is the best for winter commuting. It looks cool, is comfortable, and is a lot better than trying to wear a beanie or some sort of hat underneath a regular vented bicycle helmet designed to cool your head. The newer Giro helmets have easy opening vents. I typically ride for 10

[RBW] A question about frame bags

This is from the uninitiated. I've only seen them in photos, so no experience at all. The question: Why? It seems like they couldn't hold much (compared to saddle bags or panniers) without being stuffed to the point where they would interfere with pedaling. The upsides I see would be that

I'm sort of with Phillip here. Rivendell has been evolving during its tenure in the cycling world, but it began based in low BB, long chain stay, neutral handling designs, with a lean to comfortably high handle bars, leather saddles, wider tires (limited by brakes available at the time) and

Like Tim, Merino works for me. I wear wool caps down to about 30F, and ski caps below that. Thicker wool socks in roomier shoes or sandals, and layered wool clothes. The early RBW wool caps are prone to running dye when you sweat, and the later ones have thick seams that hurt under a helmet.

Something similar happened to me commuting home from work in the early 1980s.  I was commuting on a Raleigh DL-1 roadster then, with my wallet in a Carradice-clone seat bag.  I'd failed to secure one of the straps, and when I got home I discovered my wallet was missing. I backtracked my route

[RBW] Lost & found anything while riding?

2017-10-29 Thread William R.
I left my saddle bag open once for I don’t know how long. At first I thought nothing was missing. Luck! Later I learned that one brand new summer glove was missing. The nice ones that Riv sells. Never found it and was stuck with one brand new glove. Not a huge financial loss, but still quite

Lots of iterations of wool caps that cover the ears to a balaclava that tucks into my base layer top (haven't tried PJWs top w/ hood) but I always add a helmet cover. when it gets cooler. 40°F and rain this morning, will be using all the tricks. This is always the worst weather for a commute.
