[RBW] Re: 650b tires: the fat and the skinny about them?

2017-12-14 Thread lum gim fong
I like 38-42mm wide 650b for safety reasons.

I have fallen and been injured when using skinnier tires that got hung up in
longitudinal road and sidewalk cracks. The wide 38-42 tires dont get caught on
the cracks .They roll over.
Would have to be pretty wide for them to get stuck in a crack. More safety fir
me.
Plus, they can be run at lower pressures and that helps tires up and over lips
between asphalt and concrete gutter, instead of a 120psi tire not rolling up
over tge lip and staying on asphalt while the bike dumps you over. Not that one
should be riding this way but sometimes you find yourself among these road
hazards.

[RBW] Re: 650b tires: the fat and the skinny about them?

2017-12-14 Thread Evan E.
Tom,

If you really want narrow 650B tires, you can buy Grand Bois Cypres 650Bx32
tires from the company's website

in Japan. But I think that, yes, if you go wider, such as the 650Bx38 Loup
Loup Pass from Compass, or the 650Bx38 Pari-Moto, you'll get the
combination of comfort, speed, and traction that 650B tires offer. (Col de
La Vies are far less supple and plush.) And in fact, I think that a few
years ago Jan Heine of Bicycle Quarterly/Compass determined, through
testing, that 42mm is the optimum width for performance on 650B tires. This
is especially true on rough roads where a wide tire soaks up bumps that
would, on narrower tires, cause "suspension losses" that slow you down. So:
your current tires might be the ideal width, after all.

[RBW] Random OT impressions sought: BF Haul-a-Day

2017-12-14 Thread Christopher Murray
I don't have a Haul-a-day but I've had four Bike Fridays. The one I have
currently has the same type of adjustable frame as the haul-a-day. The frame
feels as stiff and as well made as any of the other BFs I've owned. The
versatility of adjusting the frame is very cool even if not used often. You can
easily adjust the frame for a 5 foot rider from a 6 footer in about 5 minutes.
Have you had/ do you have a Bike Friday? If you have any questions I can help
with, please let me know.

Lovelybicycle wrote a good review of the haul-a-day not too long before she
vanished.

Cheers!

[RBW] 650b tires: the fat and the skinny about them?

2017-12-14 Thread Tom Goodmann
I'm the current happy rider of a Curt Goodrich-built Proto Saluki (my
friend from this list and I have already traded the bike back and forth
once between us) shod with Gran Bois 42s. It's a nimble and quick-turning,
and I'd like to play around with tire sizes a bit to see how "roady" I can
ride it. I would like to have tried the 32s once offered from Compass, and
wonder why 650b tires of that dimension proved undesirable. Those tires, at
least, are currently unavailable, although I know there are nominal 38s
(Pacenti Moro; Col la Vie) and a few 35s out there too. Is the general
thinking that I'd be giving up too much of the advantage of this wheel size
in pushing the lower limits of tire dimensions? Thanks for views and
advice. Tom--in Miami where it is perfect riding weather right now

Good is a debatable concept, but I will submit my old Novara Buzz as

No derailer hanger, 120mm spacing, and forward facing dropouts.

For something that cost $200, half off of the original list of $400, it was
a good enough bike that I quite enjoyed riding.

Minimal tread wear.

It's really not hard at all to disconnect a dynamo hub, but I still prefer to

ridiculous I know, but there's just that small amount of hassle I choose to

Re: [RBW] Spitballing: Hunqabeam fixed conversion ideas

2017-12-14 Thread Deacon Patrick
Justin, Fixed lifestyle? Ha. I’ve no idea what that means. Naught ‘bout me
lifestyle is changing because me dropouts are rotating 90ish˚. Double grin. The
shift is entirely selfish, given the benifits to my brain and body. I jest, but
I think I know what you mean, taking “lifestyle” to be “riding style.” And
there is a definate difference in style of riding, though in my experience so
far no particularly significant (to anyone but a racer) difference in time for
each ride. I suspect I am faster climbing (smoother ride increases traction and
less having to compensate for deceleration of a freewheel. I also suspect the
speed difference is small, but of course on a 10 mile climb/descent, 2/3 to 3/4
of riding time will be on the climb. I know I ride slower down hill, but again
that has minimal impact on average speed, because dropping from a 30mph average
to a 25mph average is negligable to anyone but a racer, especially given the
gains climbing.

Numbers from the Tour de France bear this out. I read somewhere on the
interwebs (so you know it’s true) that the first year the Tour de France
allowed freewheels (singlespeed) in addition to fixed the average speed jumped
a whopping 0.3 or 0.4 mph (or close to that) over the entire 1,500 whatever
miles of the race. For me, nothing important is lost by losing the freewheel
and a lot is gained.

I’ve actually considered this jump (to either all ss or fixed) for a number of
years, but never pulled the trigger because just shifting less on the
Hunqapillar made it a singlespeed that could shift on the fly. Not the same,
but close. I didn’t try fixed because I had to try it on a bike I know (even
handlebars can mess with my brain and I need days to recover, so a whole new
bike that was fixed? No what to know what was due to what.). So when I did try
fixed on the Quickbeam, I was ready to jump all in if it worked. It did, and
here I am. Grin.

Philip, Ha! Aye. Well, I wondered as I confidently rode over miles of slick
snow on today’s ride if these were conditions that I would have ben far more
trepedatious in with a freewhell. I make it through 99% of the technical stuff
that I did on the SS plus I can climb 2% more of the stuff I couldn’t SS, so I
come out ahead in a way noone cares about. Grin.

Bill, I appreciate the vote of confidence. Grin. I’d add to that list
clearence for widish tires of 2.1”. As someone mentioned, I’m getting the
equivilant of my ideal custom frame for bikepacking and hauling.

With abandon,
Patrick

The only bikes I know of that are designed to be single speed and designed

I approve of Deacon Patrick's general plan to trust Riv and trust

I’ve never had an issue with the rear facing drop outs of the Quickbeam and

[RBW] Re: How do you like your Catalyst pedals?

2017-12-14 Thread lum gim fong
Interesting question.
Would be interested to know why they fell out of use if they were around
before. That might save time and $$$ in trying them today if it was a legit
reason

[RBW] Re: How do you like your Catalyst pedals?

2017-12-14 Thread EasyRider
I'm not quite ready to give these a go, though I'm sure I'd dig them. For
the time being, I'm a little more curious about their antecedents. Most of
my favorite things about my bikes, much of which I learned about via
Rivendell, are "old" innovations. Were pedals like the Catalyst around
before, and fall out of favor?

[RBW] Thoughts on the new SON Connector-less Dynamo Hub?

2017-12-14 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
My custom MAP has a connectionless SON. Quick release type. It does require a
custom fork. The jury is still out on mine but I definitely love the ease of
wheel removal, although my wired SON on the Hilsen is not a problem. It takes a
second to make sure the wire connections are oriented correctly when changing
the tire but it's not an issue at all. However, when very tired, while riding a
brevet, it can be easy to forget there are connectors (at least for someone as
dumb as me) and you can forget to disconnect/connect them. But a custom fork is
required for the connectionless, no matter how you slice it.

[RBW] Re: Roadinis could be arriving any day now?

2017-12-14 Thread Belopsky
What I wish was also mentioned was 'stack and reach'.
It's 'easy' to plug these numbers into a CAD program (bikecad, rattlecad)
to find them, but seems like a really quick thing for RBW to start
including as well.

Re: [RBW] Spitballing: Hunqabeam fixed conversion ideas

2017-12-14 Thread Eric Daume
My Karate Monkey has rear facing track ends. Changing the wheel ranges from
a hassle (single speed) to very frustrating (geared) to probably howling
anger (gears + fenders, though I've never used this setup). On the KM, it's
sort of worthwhile for the short chainstays. That's not a concern on the
Hunq.
