Hi Patrick,
I just installed a pair of those Catalyst pedals and just did 22km of

But I did not notice any play during that short ride.
Will check my pair and give feedback.

[RBW] Re: Gearing for Quickbeam

2018-04-05 Thread 'Mojo' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Alan, Deacon is The Man of course. But here is what I did with my Q
gearing: I used 39/45 chainrings with a 17/21 Dingle and a 23T on the flip
side of the hub. That gave me 5 useable gears from 46 to 72 inches. Like
Minh I most often chose a gear and stayed there for the entire ride.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/79695460@N00/2760281945/in/album-72157607471577085/
Since that picture and description my tires have grown to 32 or 35mm width
(& thus my gear inches have increased a bit) and I am using freewheels
instead of fixed. Fixed is pure and all that; freewheels are...well, free.

[RBW] Re: Gearing for Quickbeam

2018-04-05 Thread Minh
alan, i don't have much to add from what patrick has posted. and this is
my opinion only but this kinda feedback is pretty useless, its one of those
cases where you have to find what works best for you because it really
depends on what shape you're in and what style you like to ride. some
people hate grinding up hills at a pace you could walk faster at, some
people hate coasting, etc.

you just have to find your own zen on the bike, that's the best thing about
the QB/SO bikes that's different from my other Riv, you can try to force it
to be something it's not but the best riding is to let it come to you.

that will end my personal philosophy lesson about riding the QB.

minh, who just walked in after a spirited ride grinding up some hills on
his QB.

FWIW i run a 40/32 up front and a 17/19 out back, i almost never change out
of the 40/17, find the changes enough of a PITA that i don't do it.

Re: [RBW] Play in an unweighted pedal

2018-04-05 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
When you say "play", what do you mean? It is up/down, aka vertical play, or
lateral play?

If your Pedaling Innovations pedals are
anything like the other commonly available VP pedals (and it does look that
way), there isn't really anything to adjust, because it doesn't use loose
balls like a MKS pedal (for example). Instead, it uses a few cartridge
bearings and a sleeve or roller bearing
 on
the inboard side. The breakdown of these pedals are explained in this rebuild
video . From the video, and from inspection of
my "Clem Smith" pedals
,
it is clear that the bearings are held in by the physical dimensions of the
spindle, and there doesn't appear to be any allowance to adjust the
bearings, vertically or laterally, by design. It is also clear that the
dust cap doesn't really do anything structural.

It may be worthwhile for you to see if there's any rebuild kits available
for your Pedaling Innovations pedals, or if the ones offered by VP fit your
needs. At least for the inboard side, the spindle is used as a bearing
surface, so if that part is worn, you may be out of luck (except maybe
trying to retrofit parts from the aforementioned cheapy Clem Smith pedals
onto your Pedaling Innovations pedals).

That sure depends a lot on the terrain, how much and how fast it

differences up at the top end, 2-tooth in the middle going to 3 for the
last few on most of my bikes, but there are a couple that seem happier
with spacing more like

I've never run more than 8 (and always a triple), so pretty far behind
current thinking.  For general use & touring, 2 tooth jumps between
the smallest cogs, going to 3 in the middle & 4 for the last couple
shifts well and doesn't feel like stepping into a hole.
12-14-26-28-21-24-28-32 (or 34) meets my needs.

I'll bet you mean 12-14-16-18-21-24-28-32.  I have a customized version
of that cassette (substituting a 1st position 13 for the 12) on my Jack
Taylor, where it works very nicely.

I was cautious about the 28 to 34 being too big but it shifts well and
actually feels like a good change.  Sometimes the 28 to 32 doesn't
feel like much of a change.  Chainrings are 24-34-44, with 700 x 40
tires.

It feels fine to me, but then most of mine have 3-tooth steps at the low
gear end.  And, as it happens, 36x32 is just fine for most of the steep
terrain where I ride.  I have a 24T granny ring, but only get to use it
maybe once a month or so.

[RBW] Gearing for Quickbeam

2018-04-05 Thread Deacon Patrick
Congratulation, Alan! First, for perspective on the numbers I’m about to give
you, read my review of my QB (pre-fixed though it is).
http://thegrid.ai/withabandon/quickbeam-sightings/

How, a few details and thoughts, recomendations:

1. Ride what you have. Learn. It will be hard, no matter what the gearing is.
You’re learning to use one gear instead of 20+.
2. Ride one gear only and you will learn even more. Do this for three months.
3. Ride till you can’t, walk till you can.
4. You are always in the right gear. This is just as true as you are always in
the wrong gear. But the countanance of joy from always being in the right gear
greatly exceeds that of always being in the wrong gear.
5. Your 4 tooth dingle cog will give you a reasonable drop in gear. That’s all
I use on my QB (44 x 17/22) and I ride asphalt, dirt roads, trails, rocks,
roots, hills. My high is 71”, my low is 57”.
6. My Hunqapillar gearing will have greater range because I will have a double
chainring and 5t spread in the rear. 34/38 x 17/22 (via a flipflop hub). This
will give me three ridable gears for loaded bikepacking and errands of: 61”,
47”, and 42”
7. Try fixed. Try it for a week or two. You’ll love it or hate it, but you’ll
learn. A lot.
8. Learn to climb in slow cadance without going anaerobic. This takes time, but
basically I view each pedal stroke as a squat. I don’t do power/speed squats, I
do slow squats.
9. You’ll be amazed how much stronger your riding gets (on any bike) with
consistant ss riding, and if you only ride ss for a few weeks, just how fast
your get stronger.
10. LCG. Lowest Common Gear. Comes with every bike, standard. It is also
biking, never failure.

Enjoy!

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Homer Hilsen stolen in San Francisco

2018-04-05 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Have to agree - that ad is kind of weird. Left brake lever is kind of
"bonked" in a bit. Even though they specify 56, it looks a tad smaller in
the photos.

I supposed it could be a relative or non-knowledgeable person selling for
the original owner, but it's reasonably light on details and Riv-love. You
could cobble the text together after a quick google search or two.

In a pinch one could also use valve stem nuts. Inside diameter is good and
they are decent thickness. Can 'stack' them for rack mounting off-sets at
fork braze-on too.

2018-04-05 Thread C Sharp
Edwin,

Several things jump out at me. Nothing about this posting suggests that the
seller knows about and appreciates the bike he’s selling is a Rivendell — which
is what you’d expect if he had ever spent $3000 on it. Strange color in the
photos at the very least, but also non-drive side photos and no close ups of
components. Super generic ad that sounds like someone imitating a bike
salesman. Bad formatting.

Ultimately, just a hunch, but a lead that seems worth investigating.

Best,
Cameron

[RBW] Gearing for Quickbeam

2018-04-05 Thread alan lavine
Hi All,
Changing a few things on a new to me QB, and was wondering how others have them
set up. For the rear I have a 17/21 dingle that I want to use, but haven't
decided about the front. Single or double chainring?
Would love to hear what others have used, and for what purpose, I.e. around
town, touring, climbing, etc. My use would be mostly around town, occasional
30-40 mile rides with moderate climbs, but no off road use. Maybe CC tours in
the future.
Also, how often do you actually change the gears? I wonder if I'd be too lazy
to do it often, and just use a geared bike when needed. So maybe a single up
front and dingle in the rear would suffice.

Thanks,
Alan

Re: [RBW] IRD 8-speed [13-40] Wide Range Cassette

2018-04-05 Thread Jim Bronson
When choosing a wide range casette - I would look at percentage jumps
rather than tooth jumps. The 17 to 21 jump sounds like a pretty big one,
percentage wise speaking. A 4 tooth jump is much larger in the higher
gears than the lower gears, percentage wise. $0.02 and YMMV.

I also echo the thoughts of others to go more speeds if you're going
wider. I switched to 10 speed, using SRAM 12-32 currently with a 44-28
wide low double. That seems to be a good compromise for me.

Re: [RBW] Re: IRD 8-speed [13-40] Wide Range Cassette

2018-04-05 Thread Patrick Moore
I have to say that I sit on both extremes of the cadence spectrum, since
(a) most of my riding on pavement is fixed gear, and (b) I hate shifting
only to find that the gear I've shifted to is not exactly the one I wanted.
(But I'm someone who does obsess about gear ratios for fixed gear
drivetrains.)

For multiple gear systems, I prefer to give up high and low ends in order
to get 1 tooth jumps between gears in the cruising range. One of my nicest
gearing systems, back when I rode derailleurs on road, was a
"pseudo-half-step" with very closely spaced 48/45 or 47/44 rings and a 7
speed cassette that was something like (forget exactnesses) this:

*48*

*45*

12

99

13

91

86

15

79

74

*17*

*70*

*66*

19

63

59

22

54

51

30

37

Most of my riding was on the 17 t cog, and, with Kelly Take-Offs, I could
ride comfortably on hoods and in hooks and simply flick the left lever back
and forth for 9/10 of my riding; perfect indexing. The 12 and 30 were used
only with the outer and inner rings, respectively.

More recently, I've got this on my Matthews "road bike for dirt, with 29.5"
actual Big Ones for riding in our ABQ, NM bosque sand:

*42*

*28*

14

89

15

83

16

77

17

*73*

18

*69*

46

19

*65*

43

20

*62*

41

22

56

38

24

52

34

28

44

30

The ratios are perfect for my riding, which is along the acequia roads and
trails paralleling the n/s, flat terrain, Rio Grande, whose surfaces are
composed largely of old river silt. But since any ride is at least partly
pavement, I like the close ratios that allow me just about exactly the
right gear for anything I am likely to encounter on my pavement/dirt
routes; note that all this is also relative to my preference for a high-ish
gear, low-cadence, high-torque pedaling style.

But then, even with these systems, I probably shift less than most riders.

Re: [RBW] FS: Pashley Clubman 54.5-56

2018-04-05 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm glad it's too small for me, otherwise I'd be very tempted, and I've
just had to shell out $1750 for car repair. If my daughter didn't use the
car (I put no more than 1,200 miles/year on it, if that) I'd not bother
with it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Put her on a Rivendell!

2018-04-05 Thread Patrick Moore
You got me. I just think it's a wonderful shot; perfect for the logo of
some upstart organization devoted to butting heads with conventions. A
company with Edward Abbey as CEO.

I rather think it is too agressive for Rivendell, though of course
Rivendell came to mind (which is why I posted); but Rivendell is too gentle.

(I disagree with Abbey at very many levels, but I do delight in his
contempt for stupid and corrupt authority -- corrupt because stupid; *and* his
love for the severe beauty of the American Southwest -- beautiful because
severe; the severity is purity.)

Over and out on this one.

[RBW] FS: Pashley Clubman 54.5-56

2018-04-05 Thread Joe Bernard
Cross-post from BOB: Pashley Clubman set up as a 2-speed, made in England, nice
light traditional road bike with 531 tubes, listed as a 21.5 inch frame on
their site. I bought it on the BOB about 18 months ago in pretty much new shape
and it's still in that condition.

It started as a Clubman Country (link below) which is a standard
double-chainring dropbar road bike, then slowly morphed into a lighter
Paul-ified version of their Clubman Urban. Scroll down in that link for that
one, it's the same frame with 2-speed IGH and drum brakes.

Wheels and seatpost are stock. Sugino wide-low from Riv, 40-26. Some kinda
Shimano or Tange BB, whichever was on the Cheviot I pulled it from.
Paul Melvin tensioner, 17t cog with spacers and a Gear Clamp.
Old Mavic double front derailer shifted with a SunRace clickety-friction
thumbie.
Brand new NOS Dia-Compe levers, super nice, I just installed them.
Paul Racer brakes.
New V-O Milan bar, new Ergon grips, nice Nitto threadless 12cm stem looking
horrendous on a V-O quill converter. Quill has some insertion marks, but the
smudge you see above the headset is grease I forgot to wipe off after raising
the stem. You'll be changing this anyway; use it to decide if you're happy with
stem length or need different, then buy the appropriate Nitto quill 25.4 stem
and sell that threadless thing!
Grand Bois Cyprés 700 x 30 tires.

Also comes with original derailers (105), cranks, BB and 8-speed cassette.
No saddle, pedals or bags.
$1400 shipped Bike Flights or reasonable offer.

Great fast bike, I'm happy to keep it if it doesn't sell but I want to snag one
of those Lightning Bolts Analog Cycles is selling. Make an offer!

[RBW] WTB Nitto Choco Norm and/or Dia Compe SS-6 Levers (Possible trade for Soma Portola Bars?)

2018-04-05 Thread Mushroom Man
The Soma Portola just isn't doing it for me on my faux-Riv 1984
Stumpjumper, really curious about the Choco bar. Anyone have one they would
let go of? And perhaps some Dia Compe SS-6 levers to throw on it?

Maybe the Soma Portola bars would work better for someone else, they are
nice dirt drop shape I just don't spend a bunch of time using the flare.
56cm I believe, plenty wide.

Hey all,

So new lower price on my Quickbeam: $1000 OBO. Also I have more time now
and could ship it for cost, but definitely a preference for local (Seattle)
pickup.

Also I have a couple of other things FS:

I have a Big Nitto Front rack for 26" wheels. This one:
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/racks/products/nitto-big-front-rack-34f-20075

Riv sells it for $218 I'll sell it for $100 + shipping. It's in good shape;
I had it on my Safari for a few years did one tour with bags on it. Some
scratches, but in solid shape.

I also have a three pairs of Musa shorts in the original butternut size L.
One has a green crotch and is probably later. All are in good shape (no
rips or tears) and are great riding shorts. They are just too big for me
now. Would trade for a medium or sell for $20 each.

One pair the original Musa pants in butternut. There is some oil stains
near the ankle from riding with these and one rear pocket missing the
button. Size Large. No rips or tears and velcro is still solid. Again just
too big for me and I don't really like to ride in pants. $20

[RBW] Re: IRD 8-speed [13-40] Wide Range Cassette

2018-04-05 Thread dougP
"I does make me curious what others may think is the ideal spacing between
cogs when climbing and shifting down while attempting to maintain a
somewhat constant cadence."

I've never run more than 8 (and always a triple), so pretty far behind
current thinking. For general use & touring, 2 tooth jumps between the
smallest cogs, going to 3 in the middle & 4 for the last couple shifts well
and doesn't feel like stepping into a hole. 12-14-26-28-21-24-28-32 (or
34) meets my needs. I was cautious about the 28 to 34 being too big but it
shifts well and actually feels like a good change. Sometimes the 28 to 32
doesn't feel like much of a change. Chainrings are 24-34-44, with 700 x 40
tires.

Your feedback is very helpful nonetheless.
I does make me curious what others may think is the ideal spacing between

Also, if I go to a 10 speed Sunrace (or other) I'd at least have to get a

Perhaps this is a feature of smaller frames? My Rivendells are 68, 68 and

[RBW] Re: anybody have VO crazy bar?

2018-04-05 Thread Jon BALER
I have had one on my touring bike for a few years, and like it. My touring
bike is currently a Salsa Marrakesh with flat bar geometry.

In the last year, I trimmed down the forward extensions at the bend. I
found I wasn't using the upper portion very often, and now I can rotate my
wrists over the end to achieve another hand position.

A couple of differences from the Jones Bar:
-There is no forward sweep in the middle section, so a Jones bar would need
a shorter stem to achieve the same position.
-The no forward center sweep also results in a straight center section,
which provides a central hand position similar to drop bars.
-The straight ahead extensions keep the area in front of the bar open,
which is a benefit if you have a tall rando style bag.
