Hi Ed,

My PHB is 81cm.

Actually 50cm Atlantis would have worked just fine for me. Ordered the
smaller size with the hope that my wife (who's a bit shorter than me) will
also rider the new bike occasionally.

With 47cm Atlantis I think I'll also be moving to 13cm stem for my Bosco

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam vs Roadeo/Legolas

2018-04-16 Thread 'Mojo' via RBW Owners Bunch
John,

I have a Quickbeam and Legolas and they are very different bikes.

The Q is fun as you describe, but it behaves like the touring bike it is.
The tubing is stout and feels it. Visually the lugs are understated and the
paint is tough and relatively thick.

The Legolas on the other hand is a racing bike with lighter tubes. The bike
jumps with any input. It climbs wonderfully. Visually the lugs are fanciful
and the paint enhances them. It is not up to a Joe Bell paint job that I
have on another bike, but it approaches.

If memory serves, the handling was similar but I have long since changed
the Legolas to low trail.

[RBW] Re: Hunqabeam Quickapillar Frame Finished!

2018-04-16 Thread Deacon Patrick
Jason asked about the hub. I’ll post details on the build, but its a Phil Wood
Kiss Off hub, 135 spacing, fixed/fixed.

Carla asked about gearing, cogs, and fenders. Fixed gear riding requires chain
tensioning via horizontal dropouts (sliding the wheel horizontally to adjust
the chain). A chain tensioner (as one might use with single speed) doesn’t work
with fixed gear. Yes, the Quickbeam dropouts allow a greater range of gears
(specs to be posted in the build post later), in this case 61” down to 42”.
Fenders can be used with the Quickbeam rear track style dropouts, but I won’t
be using them for the knobbies I ride and the noise and fuss.

Not sure I covered all your questions, holler if not.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Quickbeam vs Roadeo/Legolas

2018-04-16 Thread John G.
Hi,

I’ve been really enjoying my new-to-me Quickbeam. I love the simplicity of its
single speed setup, but its geometry, handling, and ride quality (and my
particular fit on a 62cm) have truly impressed me.

I’m looking to take my aged Mercian Superlight out of heavy rotation, and I’ve
been pondering a Roadeo for a few years. I’m curious if anyone has experience
with both a Quickbeam AND a Roadeo (or Legolas), and would like to share their
thoughts. And yes, I get that one has gears and the other does not.

It’s also been fun to note the slight similarities between my Atlantis and the
Quickbeam. It’s hard to pin it down, but they remind me a bit of each other in
the way they ride. A certain calmness, a feeling of predictability and
reassurance...then again, it could be my imagination.

Patrick your frame is stunning! Are you able to have more choices with your

[RBW] Re: Prague to Paris route help

2018-04-16 Thread Harald Kliems
There's a great German website that has routes that are much more direct
than the typical tourist routes, but still have a focus on low traffic,
minimizing hills, and a pleasant bike experience.

For Americans (and Germans alike), the route presentation will take a lot
of getting used to -- he basically cuts up and recombines topo maps for the
routes, and so you end up with only a few pieces of paper for even very
long routes.

He doesn't have anything for the section from Prague to Nuremberg. But you
could use EuroVelo Route 4 to the German border:
http://www.cyklistevitani.cz/Vypis-vyhledavani.aspx?lat=49.63726658842979=15.3849506999=7

Then go south for a bit on this route until close to Regensburg:
http://www.radweit.de/br/bry.html

Connect to Nuremberg: http://www.radweit.de/nr/nry.html (you can probably
cut across to this route from further north, but beware that this is quite
hilly territory)

Nuremberg to Karlsruhe: http://www.radweit.de/nka/nkay.html

Connect to Paris: http://www.radweit.de/ppf/ppfyd.html

There are many options to take sections by train, as long as you stay away
from the high-speed trains, which for the most part don't accept bikes.

[RBW] Re: Lanky 'Lantis Thought Thread on the FB

2018-04-16 Thread Lester Lammers
About 10-12 years ago I was looking for a roadish bike with fatter tires.
There weren't many. I stumbled on the Rivendell site, read a bit and took a
chance on a Bleriot. Many smiling miles for sure.

Grant and company have no doubt been pioneers. The new MIT frame
direction should allow them to get more bikes to more people in less time.
A smart move business wise. I had my doubts about the new long chainstays
until I tried them. Another big smile. I hope they sell a lot of them.

I'm sure the 53 MIT Atlantis will be my go to ride until I can't balance
myself on two wheels.

Appreciate it, Bill! That’s fairly tight. I’m hovering at 190lb and run my
Barlows and Snoqs at 42 front and 45 rear lbs of pressure, with no more than
me, tools/tube, and 2 water bottles (on my 58 Sam). Dreamy ride! Took me a
while to feel confident enough to ride at that low pressure; no issues yet.

Re: [RBW] WTB 65cm Atlantis

2018-04-16 Thread Reed Kennedy
Not an Atlantis, but I’ve decided I’m ready to part with my 62cm gray and
maroon Hunqapillar. I usually ride a 64cm, but thanks to the very slightly
sloping top tube this one fits my 93.5cm PBH quite well. (The Hunqapillar
flier recommends this size for 91.5 -100cm PBHs.)

This is the original Toyo Hunq with the fancy heat treated tubing.

If you’re interested let me know and I’ll put together some details and
pictures.

Best,
Reed
