[RBW] Re: Is this an insane idea?

2018-06-09 Thread Deacon Patrick
The max spread of a dos freewheel is fairly small, yet you can get a wider
spread with two single freewheels and get profiscient at flipping the tire. It
takes about a minute when you get the hang of it (unless you’re loaded with
panniers, then that’s a different story!), vs 30 seconds with a Dos Eno. Play
with Sheldon Brown’s gear calculator to get an idea of how much spread you can
get with say a 16/22 free wheel set up, then play with the chain rings with say
40/30 (56t/62t, for a 6 tooth difference). That’s a decent climbing gear (my
Hunqapillar’s low is 34x22, for 42”). It’s what I use for bikepacking (75 pound
bike load) on the steep stuff. For me, it’s too low for day rides with 40 pound
bike/load total), but from what you describe, lower may be better. Also, I’m
riding fixed gear, which allows for a higher gearing because of the direct
connection to the rear wheel. My set up is flipflop hub with 17/22 cogs and
38/34 chainring, giving me 38x17=61”; 38x22=47”; and 32x22=42. That leaves with
with a 5 tooth difference, allowing flexability for wider tires and adiquate
clearence.

Feel free to pm me anytime on the floor living questions.

Patrick

[RBW] Re: Keto Rivendell Commutes and 2 questions

2018-06-09 Thread ascpgh
A primer: http://josepharcita.blogspot.com/2011/03/guide-to-ketosis.html

Answering your questions:

1.) PerJoseph Arcita: "Well it turns out that there is a store of
carbohydrates in your liver in the form of glycogen that will get broken
down into glucose when none is ingested. If you do not ingest glucose for
such a long period of time that liver-glycogen stores become depleted then
you will take all of your energy from fatty acids."

The trick is to make your body become more efficient at recognizing and
initiating the fatty acid metabolism. I recall some old training advice of
keeping your hear rate below 80% calculated capacity in the early season as
you build your mileage bases as to encourage this fatty acid metabolism.
Trips above 80% output capacity encouraged your body to cheat, rely on
glycogen and go easily into anaerobic operation, producing lactic acid and
all the subsequent penalties associated with it.

A guy I worked with was a commuter in the San Diego area who shared some
miles of his route with Pete Penseyres and was always stunned by how the
guy riding 65 miles to work could dust him every day. Penseyres was into
the keto diet angle as well.

2.) I'm waiting to hear Deacon Patrick on the thread. He has great
experience and additional sources for his guidance.

Thanks Patrick! I really like the idea of riding a single speed everywhere.
I've always been a bit of a minimalist, so the idea definitely fits into my
lifestyle (one of these days I'll ask to pick your brain about floor
living). But in practice it's intimidating once I get out of the (flat)
center of the city to hilly gravel fire trails. Perhaps it would be worth
investing in a DOS freewheel and seeing if I can do it...

Isaac, I ride bikepacking with all my gear weight except water in the rear and
love it, including on single track. Handlebars matter. I had trouble with
instability with Albatross, none with New Moustach (Albastache). I experimented
with various weight in the front and found I prefer none. Hunqapillar rides
brilliantly.

Tom asked what Hunqapillar owners can do that Atlantis owners can’t. Likely
nothing, but I just did a bikepacking trip on my HunqaBeam, total weight 74

gear), that might over flex a lighter frame or make it feel less stable. Most

[RBW] Low/No Carb Electrolyte?

2018-06-09 Thread Deacon Patrick
I just rode 4 days in temps up to 90˚F with too little water most of the time
(drought conditions) without consuming anything other than one meal a day of
beef jerkey, butter, cream cheese, cheese, 90% dark chocolate, and coffee
beans. No idea what electrolytes are in there, but no supplimental ones along
the way. Did just fine, until the pick-up stickes game was played on the trail
(I think I took a wrong turn and was too stupid to figure it out in time) up to
the Continental Divide and I had a lot of reroutes (challenging at 12K feet on
steep slopes), unloads and portage bike and gear separately, etc, then blew my
legs out on the last mile on 30+% grade. Oof. Not sure if electrolytes would
have helped. Grin.

However, if you want to try something, get Bioplasma (cell salts) and put 4 of
them in your water bottle, see what it does for you.

[RBW] Keto Rivendell Commutes and 2 questions

2018-06-09 Thread Deacon Patrick
Lum et al,

Something that shifting to ketogenic does is require a solid aerobic base,
because your body can’t keep up with glucose demands without constant feeding.
I strongly recommend looking in Phil Maffetone’s books on endurance.

To the comment someone made about the body not wanting to go into ketogenic
because it sees this as starving: 2 million years of evolution says otherwise.
Ketogenic or low carb was the standard human state until the rise of
agriculture, at which point all kinds of problems came in, including increased
dental issues, heart issues, and other health issues. Carbs used to be a fall
back food, only used extensively when meat was not to be found. Our body’s very
negative reaction to carbs is evidence of this.

Hey Eric,

I’ll counterpoint and say it is worth experimenting with gearing, but also
point out that you can, with wide range flip-flop hub freewheel/cogs and two
same or even wider ranged chain rings (so long as the total tooth difference is
6 or so, I know it is technically 8, but that can make 38s snug). Then you only
run the big cog with the little chain ring and the little cog with the big
chain ring. Two wide ranging gears. Simplicity of the original bike. Best of
all possible worlds. Grin.

I know that in Grant's book, he recommends tomato juice (at least I think
that's where I read it). It has the salt and you can get brands (Knudsen
and Trader Joe's) that don't add sugar and have relatively low carb content
(around 8–10g per 8oz). I've done one bottle of this and one bottle of

a 20" gear felt a lot like balancing on a knife blade with the bike
wanting to dart off to one side or the other on a whim.   I lost it once
with each of them, the bike darting across the road at a right angle.

I replaced each of those bikes with a low trail, more flexible
alternative.  Neither of those bikes shows the slightest inclination to
dart off to the side on slow climbs, and there's no sawing back and
forth with the handlebars to keep the bike in line.  I just sit and
ride, and the bike minds its manners and climbs nice and straight.

[RBW] 26er vs 29er

2018-06-09 Thread Joe Bernard
I think more important than wheel size is how much you want a 29er Hungapillar.
There's 3 of them up on the Riv site right now, they're gorgeous, and snagging
one without a very long wait is no easy task these days. If you think you'll
love it and have the money, this decision is settled!

Re: [RBW] Re: Climbing technique tips?

2018-06-09 Thread Patrick Moore
When I owned a Sam (in case it's pertinent, this was the original model, I
think) I found the wheel flop somewhat excessive. Shod with ~32 mm Jack
Brown Greens, t certainly carved downhill corners well, but sitting up and
pedaling up steep hills in low gears left the front end so light that I too
was disconscerted by the front end's tendency to wander. It would not have
been the deal breaker -- in fact, I got rid of it because it was too
betwixt and between; neither roady enough to enjoy fully on pavement, not
capable of tires nearly fat enough for our dirt. A Sam that took 700C X 60
mm tires would have been a joy and a keeper -- I usually climb standing,
anyway.

Upshot: the wandering tendency may well be due to geometry and not to rider
position. Note that my other Rivs do, or did, not exhibit this errant
tendency.

Re: [RBW] 26er vs 29er

2018-06-09 Thread Patrick Moore
Riding the same tires in 26" and 29" sizes on flat and rolling terrain, on
a combination of gravely surfaces with bad washboard, and sandy surfaces
with sand up to about 3" deep (deeper than that and I have to walk), I find
that the larger wheels "float" better, meaning less effort to negotiate the
sand, and more comfort over the rough sections.

I also notice that bikes with the smaller wheels are more nimble,
especially when dodging obstructions and riding twisting singletrack fast.
But the first difference is, at least IME, more important than the second.

That said, while I would not trade my Matthews (29.5" wheels) for a 26er,
if all I could get was a nice classic 26" hardtail with drop bar and Rat
Trap Pass tires, I'd not be too put out. I imagine that for touring on
firm-ish surfaces, the latter would be quite nice.

I did find that my 1992 XO-1 was wholly inadequate, with its limited tire
capability, for at least the sort of dirt riding I do. So, if you are going
to jump, perhaps less reason not to make the jump to the Hunquapillar.

I'm 10 days in to a very low carb diet, and I've struggled on rides over 40
miles at a pace of 17.5-ish mph, which is my normal June pace for my
standard routes. I've lost about 9 pounds, so it's working, but it's clear
my body is still transitioning. I'm much slower, and I've never before had
to take so many breaks on a 50-miler. I'm going to try a lower
intensity--the only reason I ever ride that pace is either a) I'm pressed
for time or b) I need to burn all those carbs!

which the Thermotabs don't.) No sugar in either.

[RBW] Re: 26er vs 29er

2018-06-09 Thread Drw
I had a 29er hunq. It was an amazing bike, but in my size, 54cm, I felt that
wheels and tires that big and burley were a little overbearing and a lot harder
to get rolling and to keep rolling on steep climbs. I agree that 29ers will
smooth out some stuff. The other thing to note is that to really benefit from
the hunqapillar, you’d want to be running >55mm tires. If I was only ever
riding downhill and flat, I think that’d be the way to go for sure. Or if I was
bigger and the wheels were more proportional to my and the bike‘s frame.

I tend to agree that whatever you have will work just fine, but that’s not
always fun. Any hunqapillar will be tons of fun.

You'll get better with the tips you've been given, but there's no getting
around that you're high- front-loading a bike not really designed for that.
More load on the rear - as you say you're doing - plus panniers up front should
help. Piling a bunch of stuff into that basket is - in my opinion - better for
flattish commuter-type riding than grinding up hills with narrow shoulders and
cars whizzing by.

I live/ride in NOLA where you use every sweat pore you have. Rode 85 miles
on my Ram this morning and consumed 6 20oz bottles.

I like Scratch or Osmo products. Lowish calorie with a touch of real sugar

efficiently when paired with sugar, and a little goes a long way. Sport
drinks have way to much sugar IMO, and you can get your calories from ways
that suit you best.

Happy hydrating!

I relate to this a lot, and as such have no solid advice. I’ll second that a
high front load is harder for me to manage at low low speeds. I’ve also noticed
that I look down a lot more on slow extended climbs vs looking ahead when
riding normally. When I try to keep my head up, which is surprisingly difficult
for me in those moments, I have a much easier time tracking straight and
avoiding correcting and overcorrecting my steering.

I sometimes use these:

They come from the UK, but I order enough to get free shipping, so the cost
is pretty reasonable.

Unlike the similar Nuun product that’s available here in the States these
High5 Zero tablets actually contain no carbs at all.

Or, even better, cut out the color and artificial sweetener too and just
wash a Salt Stick tablet down with good old water:
https://www.rei.com/product/823163/saltstick-electrolyte-salt-capsules-100-capsules

Salt Stick even makes a version with both electrolytes and caffeine, which
have been a huge help on more difficult brevets.

[RBW] Low/No Carb Electrolyte?

2018-06-09 Thread Pondero
There is a lot of sweating going on recently, and I'm wondering if anyone can
recommend an electrolyte replacement strategy without sugar. I sense that long
summer rides go better when I use Gatorade with water (not water alone). But
I'd like to avoid the sugar/carbs. Will any salty food do the trick? Or is
there a better way? Suggestions?

Re: [RBW] 26er vs 29er

2018-06-09 Thread Steven Sweedler
Erik, I bought an Ogre with 29 x 2.2 to try out the big wheel, rode the
Great Divide on it, then bought a Hunq and moved the parts, sold that and
now touring on a '92 Trek 930w/26 x 2.35 Big Apples and am very satisfied.
My rough stuff all rounder is a new to me Trek 830 that I just bought off
the Bob list. its not slowing me down and if you ever fly to a tour,
packing a 26" wheeled bike is much easier, especially a large frame. Steve

[RBW] Re: 26er vs 29er

2018-06-09 Thread 'Mojo' via RBW Owners Bunch
The bike you have is the perfect bike for your next tour.

That said if you are buying new, my experience is 29+ wheels are cushioned,
confidence-inspiring, rolls-over-anything fun. My three off-road bikes have
29x3, 26x3 or 4, and 26x2.75. The 26ers are lighter, quicker, more jarring.
I choose the 29x3 just about every ride.

Wheel size should also be a direct function of frame/rider size.

Erik,
Buy one of the demo Hunqs. I’ve never seen one in real life, if you get one

I’d be stoked. I saw a Bombadill locked up outside a South Philly coffee shop a

I don't have a lot of experience with offroad riding but based on the
little I have, I wouldn't go with anything other than a 29'er for that type
of riding. The stability of bigger wheels and the ease with with they roll
over things make a huge difference (for me) over smaller wheels. I say
this as a person who prefers 26 x 55 wheels/tires for pavement riding.

[RBW] 26er vs 29er

2018-06-09 Thread Erik Wright
Alright y'all, help me work out this inner quandary I've had over getting a
new bike or not (to replace one in my stable). The demo Hunqs shown on the
blug are really making my insides jump at the thought of a 29er Hunq for
offroad riding/bikepacking.

I have 4 bikes, and I've tried specializing each (to an extent) because in
essence 3 of them are all-rounder type frames. I've turned one of them, a
26er XO-1 clone, into my off-road tourer. 2.1" knobbies for trails, RTP for
roads/gravel, frame bag, front panniers, Swift saddle bag, On-One Mary bars
+ Ergon grips, the whole getup. Recently I've been dabbling into resources
around 27.5 and 29er bikes for bikepacking (i.e. Surly Bridge Club and
Hunq), feeling that my 26er might not be the best choice nowadays in
today's landscape of bike options, falling short in the jack-of-all-trades
master-of-none kind of way.

What I keep telling myself is the old adage that really, any bike will do
the trick (for the most part), and that my 26er XO-1 clone is a fine bike
for off-road touring. Plus, people rode (and ride) 26" MTBs for a lng
time and all was good. I don't ride offroad *that* much, but nowadways when
I plan multi-day trips they're geared toward mixed terrain**. I don't doubt
that a jump from my XO-1 clone to a Hunq would in itself make a huge
difference in ride quality, but in terms of wheel size, would swapping to a
29er really make that big a difference?

Thank you for your insight!

When I began longer rides and working out after a month of EBDJ, I often drank
an Atkins shake 30 minutes before a workout. This helped tremendously. I can
now easily ride 25 miles or do a boot camp class at the gym burning 1000
calories without eating. It took my body about a month with the shakes before I
was able to just go. This was also with following pretty close and being into
ketosis by 2.5 on my blood meter.

[RBW] Re: PSA: Riv Hunqapillar Demos for sale under web specials.

2018-06-09 Thread Dave Johnston
I think the only hint at a MIT Hunq is the following from the Blahg, per
below they considered keeping the name Hunqapiller for the new mtb.

"We were all set to name the new mtn bike Elephantus--a rebound name after
we'd finally opted out of Hunqapillar to avoid confusion...and it turns out
there is an Elephant brand bike, so we gotta just let him be with that"
- Blahg

I think its OK to keep names for updates to a product serving the same
basic function. Old Corvettes aren't anything like new Corvettes, and the
old Trek 720 doesn't look like today's. Besides which they are keeping the
Atlantis name and the Hunq head badge and decals are awesome, gotta be
better than "H. "Larry" Gomez".

Man, I had a 54 hunqapillar and stupidly sold it. Probably my biggest mistake
bikewise. I’d have to sell the lot to go for it. BMC or crust evasion anyone??
;)

[RBW] Re: Keto Rivendell Commutes and 2 questions

2018-06-09 Thread Rusty Click
I've been attempting to follow EBDJ for about the same amount of time as
you. Initially, I was expecting some muscle weakness or decrease in energy
especially on longer (3 - 4 hr rt's) rides. It just hasn't been a factor,
and I'm not hungry for food during the ride. I have lost over 10 pounds in
this time. I am trying not to over think what's going on physically, and
just apply these new things into my routine.

[RBW] Re: quality of bike photos on Riv website

2018-06-09 Thread Ron Mc
I was trying to order one day and ended up on the phone with Will and even
he couldn't help me, because their computer had zonked.
They fixed it within 30 minutes, but I'm guessing they're keeping their
bandwidth down by design to keep customer communications working better.

Grant had mentioned something in the Blahg about a potential mountain bike that
peaked my interest. I wonder if that’s on the way.

[RBW] Keto Rivendell Commutes and 2 questions

2018-06-09 Thread Cameron Murphy
1) I'm not an expert, but from what I understand, your body can metabolize
glycogen from both lactate, and somewhat less efficiently from protein in your
diet. I know my performance and energy levels took a real hit for a few weeks
when I went low carb, and probably took 2-3 months to really bounce back. Now
I can do rides of 3-4 hours without any food, and actually finish stronger.
(I'm not hammering, but averaging ~150 watts, and 14-16 mph over a ride).
2) No, I actually don't get burning muscles any more. High efforts are cardio
limited for me. Eventually, too much work over my aerobic threshold leaves my
legs just weak and rubbery, but not burning or sore. Also, I found I don't get
much if any post-ride soreness like I used to. I can do long rides, or some
hard efforts that leave me spent, and feel pretty normal the next day. I do
notice that all out sprints seem to suffer -- I feel I run out of steam sooner,
but it isn't drastic. Maybe a 10% reduction.
