[RBW] Ok to take out a 650b edeluxe hub and into 700c A23 wheel?

I prefer to keep the same lacing pattern as a previous build to keep the hub as
strong as possible. You dont see hubs break too often so might not matter but
its optimal. I'd sell and build another!

I went through this a couple weeks ago, and even called Rivendell to ask

Re: [RBW] Jobst on 650b?

2018-09-14 Thread sameness
Here's a story on the development of Tom Ritchey's early mountain bikes
,

which includes his early flirtations with 650b.

The article references Ritchey's conversations with Brandt regarding
optimal wheel size:

Brandt’s understanding of physics as an engineer meant that he encouraged
> Ritchey to use the largest diameter wheel he could manage, to embrace the
> inherent efficiencies of a larger wheel. Ritchey settled on the 650b, which
> represented a compromise between the 700c wheel - fine for taller riders
> but hard to fit on smaller off-road bikes - and the 26” wheel, which at the
> time was heavy and much less efficient.

So there's a tangential reference to both Brandt and 650b. No idea if Jobst
considered the idea of 650b for road and mixed terrain applications, but he
was no doubt at least aware of their existence. Maybe 700c just made more
sense to him because it was the larger wheel.

I don't pretend to understand the "inherent efficiencies" he's talking
about, but I also didn't study engineering at Stanford, nor have I
conquered the Alps on 22mm sew-ups.

[RBW] Quickbeam Owners: White Industries ENO or VBC Crankset?

At long last I have a 60cm Quickbeam on the way to me, and I'm thinking
about using White Industries cranks for no other reason than that I've
always wanted to, ha.

I'm leaning towards the VBC crankarms since I'd like to take advantage of
the lower Q, but I'm not sure if the Quickbeam needs the additional
clearance offered by the ENO.

Anyone here use(d) one or the other and can chime in on a recommendation?
And while we're at it, suitable BB model and length you used to get a good
SS/fixed chain line?

I know I could ask WI and/or RBW, and may resort to that, but since I'd

[RBW] Re: front rack bag for a 54ram. what do people here like.

2018-09-14 Thread tc
Bo,
How much do you need to carry?

The Acorn Bags "Tall Rando Bag" is very well-made and can hold a ton. I
ended up not needing anywhere near that much space (but it looked great :)
I used it with a Berthoud decaleur. On my Sam I had to splay out the brake
cables somewhat to allow the bag space. It didn't affect braking
performance.

The Acorn Bags "Handlebar" bag is also very well made, and of course
smaller and doesn't need a decaleur. 2 straps attach it to the bar.
Plenty of room for an eyeglasses case, wallet, iphone, keys, spare tube,
tire lever, multi-tool, and small snack. The cotton is thick so it keeps
its form well and doesn't sag. I have this one on my Atlantis with
Ahearne+Map bar.

Just this week got from Soma the "Biwa-Ichi" handlebar bag made by
Ostrich. Love it. Just a tad smaller than the Acorn handlebar bag, but
can hold all of the above stuff I listed. 2 straps attach it to the bar.
This bag is very well-made, also made of thick cotton, but also has a
plastic insert for the bottom, and one for each side, that help maintain
shape. A little classier looking than the Acorn bag, which is no slouch
itself. Given its smaller size, slightly classier appearance, and no need
for rack, I opted to put this on my Roadini.

I'll send some pics if you want, but you can find pics, sizes, and
shapes.online too.

I recall an interview by Grant Petersen where Brandt agued against the value of

Re: [RBW] Jobst on 650b?

2018-09-14 Thread Ash

Oh my! These pictures are worth making posters!

It appears like he is riding uphill on a muddy rugged narrow track with
53t chainring. Animal! (I say that with respect)

Guess almost none of the details we sweat about really mattered to him. He
was more into riding than bikes.

I recall Garth reminding me about 'riding' when I was lost thinking all
kinds of tiny details about the 'bike' :)

I have had conversations with folks who have done multi-month rides. One
of them rode from Prudhoe Bay (which involves 400 miles of godforsaken
Dalton/trucking/gravel highway) to Key West. I tend to ask them what wheel
size, which tires, tire width, what brakes, bags, power source and so
forth. They were quite under equipped, going by my list. Also
interestingly none of them had strong opinions about any of those details.

2018-09-14 Thread Drw
Ryan I sent pics your way. In terms of construction, the bag is top notch.
Incredibly well made. The design is interesting and it has some very
cool/unique touches. What it came down to for me is that this bag is way too
big to use on a regular ride for me. I don’t have any big trips in my immediate
future but was looking for something that could do double duty as a normal bike
bag and expandable tour bag, and this is definitely a touring bag. Also I’m
learning that I’m not a huge fan of roll tops. I like easier access.

Re: [RBW] Jobst on 650b?

2018-09-14 Thread Jeremy Till
Jobst was a keen engineer who could cut through the marketing BS that
dominates technical discussion in the bike industry, but I would hardly
call him a role model for how to cycle with comfort and ease if you're not
a superhuman. He toured the Alps, not to mention his weekly rides in the
Santa Cruz Mountains (for those that have never been, there are some damn
steep climbs up there), with something like a 47x26 low gear. He preferred
single pivot caliper brakes over higher-leverage dual pivots because they
lacked cosine error, and told anyone who preferred the easier-to-squeeze
dual pivots to get stronger hands. Once, while touring the Alps, he
crashed, broke his leg, and then re-mounted and rode himself a number of
miles to the nearest hospital.

Comfy tires, fenders to stay dry, racks and bags for carrying our extra
layers and food, more than one water bottle...these are things for us mere
mortals, for which Jobst had no use.

Re: [RBW] Jobst on 650b?

2018-09-14 Thread Brewster Fong
My favorite is his gearing. I believe he had something like a 52/47
chainrings upfront and like 13-24 in the rear. In his "later years" he put
on a 13-26. So on all those wonderful alpine climbs he did, Jobst basically
grinded up standing in his 47x26 gearing. But I understand that was his
style. He wasn't the fastest up, but he got there. When he was on
rec.bicycles.tech, he basically chew people out for people trying to
challenge his findings without any evidence to support their claims. I miss
those days

[RBW] Re: Rene Herse crank wobble/deflection issue(?)

2018-09-14 Thread Michael Doleman
Just as an FYI response to the Sugino OX suggestions that have been
floated, here... I have used that very crank, before (it's what I had on my
old Sam), and can speak for its quality. As far as I know, however, there
are (frustratingly) only a handful of chainring combinations with which you
can get it, in terms of stock configuration. I have settled on liking a
44/28 combo, and you can't get the OX in that arrangement, that I know-of
(unless you go out and purchase separate rings, after the fact). The Rene
Herse and IRD Lobo cranks offer the ability to completely customize the
chainring combination. The White Industries double cranks also allow for
this, but their set-up is so highly unusual that I've never even considered
it. I do have a set of their hubs, however, and they are brilliant. So I
assume the crank is quite nice, too:

http://www.whiteind.com/road-crank/

Like the Rene Herse, however, I think that a complete set-up will set you
back something on the order of 5 to 6 hundred bucks. Crazy. The IRD Lobo
has the advantage of being relatively economical, by comparison.

[RBW] Re: Rene Herse crank wobble/deflection issue(?)

2018-09-14 Thread C.J. Filip
I had to go wider on the BB spindle than what you might need on a non-Riv.
I had nothing but chain rub on the front derailleur body either. A wider
BB allowed me to raise the FD up the seat tube where the chain could run in
the widest part of the FD body while still preventing the outer FD body
from hitting the drive-side crank.

This negates some of the low-tread/Q of the crank, but the Q will still be
less than most other modern cranks out there by a good margin.

Re: [RBW] WTT: My Nitto Dirt Drop RM014 (52cm - 31.8 clamp) for your Nitto RM013 (52cm, 26.0/25.4) or other alternative?

2018-09-14 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I have a RM013 52cm w/26mm clamp that I purchased from Ben's Cycle in July
when I was on a handlebar mission. Around the same time I procured a
Cowchipper, a Ritchey Venturemax, and an Origin8 Gary OS Sweep bar. I
tested all of them as a replacement for a Nitto Noodle, where I was looking
for more flare than the Noodle, but similar reach. I came to prefer the
Origin8 bar, and have been dragging my feet in offering up the Nitto,
Cowchipper and Venturemax for sale. I really don't need to trade and I
understand you're not in a position to buy, but I'm happy to consider other
items in trade, or if you can consider selling your bar I can hold my Nitto
to trade to you for that cash you'd get from a sale.

[RBW] Re: FS: 55cm Sam Hillborne Waterford Made

2018-09-14 Thread Karl
I did forget one thing. I bought used, and the kickstand plate weld was
loose on one side. Only matters if you use a kickstand without a top
plate... If it bothers you too much, I'll take $100 off.

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone tried 10 speed indexing with the Altus/Acera big pulley derailleur?

2018-09-14 Thread Tim Gavin
It should have no problem. I use Shimano 10-speed bar-ends with a 9-speed
XT rear derailleur, and it indexes perfectly.

The Altus/Acera derailleur has the exact same shift ratio (SIS).

Re: [RBW] Re: front rack bag for a 54ram. what do people here like.

2018-09-14 Thread Tim Gavin
I have a Randonneur bag from listmember David B, aka Treetop bags.
https://treetop.bigcartel.com/category/front-bags

He can do semi-custom.

I use a VO decaleur and Nitto Mark's Rack.
