In my experience this doesn't work well. I tried Orange Seal in some latex
tubes with removable valve cores, and found when I removed the tubes a
while later that something in the Orange Seal had migrated through the
latex tube and created a gummy mess on the rim bed, inside of the tyre, and
outside of the tube. And even if you find a sealant that doesn't create
this mess, latex tubes require far more frequent inflation than butyl to
keep them at pressure, and because of this the sealant will dry out more
rapidly.

[RBW] Re: Roadini as commuter?

2019-01-22 Thread Davin Dahl
I built up a 57cm Roadini to be my commuter bike/roadish riding bike. I
have an Albatross out front with an X-Small Saddle Sack. In the rear, I
have a Mark's Rack with p-clamps for the lower struts. I attach my bag with
the Frost and Seker quick release. With ten pounds or so, it rides really
well. Riding a light commuter is a thing of beauty! It's pretty tough to go
back to my bad weather steel hardtail.

Tom,
I like your idea and the independence it affordshowever I don't want to
burden Riv with something they didn't ask for.

Let's see what Denise finds out

Denise the timing would be August or September for the frame to arrive and
maybe another month for assembly/delivery.

Denise why don't you see if there's interest from David and we'll go from
there...

If everyone is OK with putting their trust in me, it looks like I can make
the "new" fundraiser as a "business/entrepreneurial" project and therefore
have better control of the funds.

Wow, never woulda expected this! My off the cuff vote would be to have Denise
reach out to Dave White from Blind Stokers. That seems in keeping with the
original intent and also targets a benefactor that might be more
interested/committed.

Riv was also to be a benefactor here; but, they luckily reached their min unit
goal for moving forward with their HHH order, so not really a big factor other
than whatever profit they’d get from this 1 frame. They had talked about
supplying some components, so, the frame profit goes away in that case...

But, maybe the appropriate thing would be to first have gofundme send an email
to all doners and give them a refund. Then ask Riv if there’s a way to set up
a special purchase code on their web site where donors could contribute towards
a frame to go to a charity who would use it. Blind Stokers or whoever; let that
be worked out as to who later so we don’t get in this situation again?

Thanks Alex. Indeed a bummer.

Re: [RBW] Re: HubbuhHubbuh email from Riv & donation idea

2019-01-22 Thread Tim Butterfield
Alex,

Not sure what's possible, but here's a couple ideas:

Thinking a president is not always involved in inventory/asset management
for their charity...

If she were willing, Christine could accept ownership of the new HHH on
behalf of BTCC, but just assign it for use by a captain to be shipped
directly to them. That would reduce her need for involvement while
maintaining control for possible future use if/when her circumstances
change.

Could she recommend another chapter/branch/club/captain that is in need of
the HHH? There may be individuals who would want to be captains, but do
not have the tandem with which to do it. A tricky bit there is BTCC has
the 501 (c) (3) status and another may not.

Dear Bunch,

I have some unfortunate news for the group...Christine has bowed out for
the donation sighting a heavy commitment at school. I don't want to
over-analyze and dwell on the past too much so I think we should carry on.

If you were skeptical from the beginning, please refrain from the

Question is, where shall we go from here? Should we have Denise reach out
to Dave White from Blind Stokers SD?

I've been in contact with GoFundMe and the only course forward is to refund
the donationshowever they would happily coordinate an email to all the
refunded participants saying that the NEW fundraiser is now hereetc.

Thanks for being such a wonderful bunch...I'll await your sage advice. And
sorry in advance if this is an emotional drain on any of you (it is for me
a little bit). I never in a million years would think someone would turn
down delivery of a fully functional tandem perfect for their charge (wide
size range, beginner friendly...FREE!)

PPS I spoke with Will about the whole situation and their number did not
factor-in Christine's HHH because her deposit wasn't timely enough. He did
indicate that he'd be happy to assign one of the "extras" if a second
effort was successful.

[RBW] Re: Bikepacking 27.5+ v. 29+

2019-01-22 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Ah, Chris. I’m trying to find a charitable way to respond to: “I don't know
anything about continental divide singletrack, but I challenge the notion that
it's not rideable.” How cute.

Now, if you want to learn ... Bikeable? Absolutely. Ridable? Not all of it.
Folks riding the Continental Divide Trail (not to be confused with the Great
Divide MTB Route, which is mostly backroads), the Colorado Trail, and other
similar trails, have a fair amount of LCG (lowest common gear, aka hike-a-bike)
for the uphill and even some downhill sections, no matter the human powered
bike they bring. Note that this is reflected in the overview of routes on
Bikepacking.com in their “Ridable” category. The CT is 92% ridable, by time.
Guess where most of that 8% LCG comes in. Near the Divide. They say the CT is
13 travel days. 8% of 13? A day. That’s a day of LCG, though of course broken
up throughout the route, mostly on the climbs and mostly near the Divide.
http://www.bikepacking.com/routes/bikepacking-the-colorado-trail/

A 2.1” 29er Hunqabeam is underbiking for this. A 2.4-2.8” Boots is more spot
on, and a 29er sounds to be the prefered wheelsize, so I agree with you there.
Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] From Joe to Clem

2019-01-22 Thread Derek Atkins
Thanks Ryan! I’ve seen a few Rivs bopping around and a guy from here in GR rode
one at Barry Roubaix last year. The Joe was my first dip into the Riv world.

I have some Billie Bars and Bullmoose bars waiting in the wing, but I
appreciate the offer on the other set-ups.

If there’s ever a West Michigan Riv gathering let me know!

Re: [RBW] Re: From Joe to Clem

2019-01-22 Thread Derek Atkins
Thanks everyone for the comments and help! This is my first time posting so
I’m not sure if this is going to everyone or what. I think I’m going to
keep the triple and see how it works. I put it on the Clem with no chain
and it looks like there shouldn’t be clearance issues with the frame. I
guess once I get wheels, tires, and a chain on I’ll know more.

I don’t really need the triple set up so worse comes to worse I guess I’ll
set what I can do to make it a double if I run into any issues.

[RBW] Re: Tubeless questions

2019-01-22 Thread Victor Hanson
You are not a good candidate for tubeless, you have to replenish the goo
every six months considering your use.

A couple of tips. The new valve cores form Stan's (and others) work
fricken excellent. $20 I know, but now no more getting tubeless goo all
over trying to get it in the tyre.

Stan's tape works great, ghetto tubeless is good also, as long as you use
an UST or tubeless ready tyre.

Don't make your own tubeless goo. Yes it can be done, however, I can
attest to the number of catastrophic messes I have had to clean up in my
work space also. If I rode 300 miles a week, great you ride enough, make
your own goo. Any less than 100 a week, buy Stan's (or whatever) and save
the headache.

Re: [RBW] Re: RBW 25 -Atlantic side of things

2019-01-22 Thread Eric Chatham
Eric here, in the ‘burbs of Atlanta, GA. I know there are a couple of folks
also in the Atlanta area. I also would enjoy a SE meetup. I live on the east
end of the Silver Comet Trail, a 61.5 paved Rails To Trails that goes from
Smyrna, GA to the Alabama state line. It connects with the 33 mile Chief
Ladiga Trail, which runs approximately 33.5 miles (are you near that end,
fullylugged?). This would be the perfect place for a SE meetup, almost 100
miles of car-free riding! There are several campsites along the trail, two in
GA and one in Alabama, as well as a few hotel options in the general vicinity.
Although I do a lot of motorcycle riding in NC, I’ve yet to pedal there, so I
find that appealing as well.

Even more Riv content: I’m taking delivery today of a Cheviot frameset and
moving most parts to it from a Sam Hillborne complete bike, so there will be a
62cm SH frame up for sale in the near future, if anyone is interested!

Peace and bicycle grease,

Eric C.

[RBW] Re: Bikepacking 27.5+ v. 29+

2019-01-22 Thread Christopher Cote
I don't know anything about continental divide singletrack, but I challenge the
notion that it's not rideable. Why else would it exist? Or are these hiking
trails? Or (motorized) dirt bike trails? In any case, if you pointed me up a
steep, rocky climb and gave me the choice between 29+ and 27+ wheels, I'd take
the bigger wheels any time. The increased traction and rollover capability
cancel out any weight penalty in my opinion.

I might be game for one or the other, depending on the logistics. I'll
keep an eye out for this thread.

Hey Folks:

OK, there seems to be enough interest for a two'fer on the east coast. A
Nor'Easter and a So'Easter. NE will probably be western-ish NY/eastern MA
area. Alex/Ben -yes?

If someone in the mid-Atlantic/south could grab the cork grips on this to
lead a group that would be GREAT! Thanks!
