These is currently up for sale three different vintage Rivendell Bicycle
Works catalogs on the Gringineer website:

https://www.gringineer.com/rivendell-bicycle-works-summer-1996-catalogue.html
https://www.gringineer.com/rivendell-bicycle-works-catalogue-no-4.html
https://www.gringineer.com/rivendell-bicycle-works-catalogue-no-3.html

[RBW] Atlas tubeless?

2023-08-04 Thread Jay Lonner
My Big Bens are nearing end of life and I’m curious about setting up my
Hunq tubeless. But I have Atlas rims, which Velocity says is a no-go.
However if you scroll through the comments on this article, John Watson
from the Radavist says they set up nicely:

https://theradavist.com/rivendell-hunqapillar-review/

So why would I want to do this? Mostly to get experience working with
tubeless setups. My full-squish MTB and gravel/bikepacking rig are
tubeless, and if/when I encounter issues with either of them (esp. if I’m
in a remote locale) I’d like to have some hands-on knowledge with
troubleshooting tubeless systems. I already have an air compressor, so
basically for the cost of some tape and sealant I’d be good to go.

Anybody have experience with making non-tubeless rims play nicely tubeless?
Tips or tricks to share? Or is it just a bad idea, and should I resign
myself to getting some new wheels built with Cliffhangers? I’d hate to have
the Hunq out of commission that long, but if I timed it to coincide with
out-of-town travel it probably wouldn’t be that big a deal.

One last question — Cliffhangers are wider than Atlases by about 4.6 mm.
How would that affect fender clearance? My intuition is that wider rims
should result in a flatter tire arc, and potentially make it possible to go
slightly wider if I wanted to. I have 50s now, and would like to be able to
move up to 55s or even 60s.

[RBW] Re: tube tear at valve stem base — any ideas why and how to fix?

2023-08-04 Thread J J
Thank you, @Brian Turner

@Ian, I rechecked the tire carefully for splits and structural damage.
Nothing.

@Patrick Moore, tubes with 36 patches!?! I'm very impressed. That reminds
me of the Ship of Theseus paradox: if a tube has so many patches, is it
still the same tube, and if it is not, at what point (i.e., which number of
patches), did it cease being the original tube and become something else?
:) Didn't all that patching cause a lumpy ride? As far as tube sizes, I
have historically been pretty lax about matching tube size with tire size,
and I haven't had trouble over the years. Bigger and smaller, they worked
ok. In this case, though, the tubes were in the right parameters for the
tires, except for the last narrow one I used. All of the tubes were fresh
and new, nothing old that could have deteriorated.

@John P in SF, I was going to ask how you prevent a tube from rotating on
the rim until I saw that your solution was to go tubeless. Tubeless is a
nonstarter for me at this point because I don't feel like buying yet
another set of wheels. All of my wheels are tube only. Plus my inner tube
habits die hard. Also, I wasn't doing any hard braking. The flats happened
on level pavement at a moderate pace.

@Jim in Rochester NY, interesting that additional pressure solved your
problem. I was running normal for me pressure, medium, like I always do.

@iamkeith, your idea of using the nuts inside and outside makes so much
sense. I will try it. It's consistent with what Rich Lesnik suggested to me
separately, that valve holes can be sharp and cut the tubes. He suggested
that I check the tape near the hole. It's plausible in light of the fact
that the tears were all in the same place on the various tubes.

So I will try the two-nut method, attempt to file or sand sharp edges or
burrs on the valve hole itself, and check the liner tape.

I'll report back here. But first I need to restock my spare tube supply
just in case!

Thanks so much to all of you (and to Rich!) for the feedback and help. I
very much appreciate it.

I bought this bike through the FB Rivendell Bicycles BUY/SELL/TRADE
group. Shipped from San Francisco to Colorado by Bike Flights, with the
thoughtful and friendly help of Jay at Scenic Routes Community Bicycle
 Center on Balboa.

The seller, who is a group member here, too, described the bike as an
All-Rounder, and for the most part that's what it seems to be, though it
may be more accurate to say it is a custom in the style of an
 All-Rounder—cantilever brakes, clearance for 2" tires, 26" wheels—but
without the bosses or eyelets for a front rack present on the ARs I've
 seen.

Here is the headtube. I've only seen these understated lug points on a
photo, ca. 2007, of a custom Riv touring bike. Can anyone here tell me
 more?

Clearance is a little tight for the Gravel King SK+, which pop out to
56 mm on the Cliffhanger rim. Can anyone suggest a tire that looks this
good but will only be, say, 53 mm on the Cliffhanger? (I'm going to try
some RH Humptulips Endurance, which are 52 mm, but on a rim 4 mm narrower,
 so I expect some expansion.)

Nice to have a Riv again. I sold my Homer in 2017 and I wish I hadn't.

It is an AR and I think you nailed it when you said it's a custom in the

I highly recommend you get yourself a copy of Roads to Ride (
https://amzn.to/3YjHJAl), and Roads to Ride South (
https://amzn.to/3YkOlyM). They're both written by this gentleman
called Grant Petersen. You might have heard of him.

The books were written in the 1980s/1990s, but they're still mostly
good and highly recommended. It's OK to buy them used. Grant told me he
never saw any royalties from the books before the publishing company went
 under.

Leah,

As a grandfather of three - two now grown - this was fun to read. I am sure
the little girl caught your enthusiasm. When I can, I slow down and call
out, "Nice bike!" to very young riders I encounter on our local trail. We
are all ambassadors.

[RBW] Re: Ride Reports (PNW and France)

2023-08-04 Thread Piaw Na
When I lived in Munich I'd go for rides every weekend and it was always so
good. Having a train to take you home meant you could range further and get
into bigger trouble. One day I rode through a forest and climbed a ladder
onto what was obviously a road. I rode on it and everyone honked at me. I
said to myself: "These Germans are really friendly." 10km later I realized
I was on the autobahn. (I actually kept track of those
trips: https://blog.piaw.net/2008/12/munich-trips-index.html)

[RBW] Re: tube tear at valve stem base — any ideas why and how to fix?

2023-08-04 Thread iamkeith
I began having this problem frequently, about 5 years ago. Nothing else
about my skills or habits or rims changed from the previous four decades,
so I've concluded that there is likely a manufacturing issue.
Thinner/less/more brittle rubber at the base of the stem or something.
There have always been the occasional "slices" due to tube rotating around
the rim, or due to too-sharp edge at the valve stem hole on an aluminum
rim, but this is different, and happened like you describe, one tube after
another. I could be wrong, but I don't think it's possible to fix them.

Knowing that doesn't help solve your issue though. Here's what I started
doing, and it's pretty much solved the issue for me:

When you install a new tube, keep the knurled nut on the stem, snug it
lightly, and install the tube with the nut INSIDE of the rim. Keep the nut
from the old tube, and intall on the outside of the rim, the normal way,
and snug firmly. This will ensure that only the metal stem will ever
contact the sharp or abbrasive part of the hole in the rim, which is now
sandwiched between two nuts.

[RBW] Re: new member/delta quill stem risers

2023-08-04 Thread Wesley
I probably should not blow up my own spot like this (I use two of these on
my bikes and may soon need a third, I love them). But this from Soma
Fabrications is 1) brand new, 2) the same price, and 3) a much higher rise.

https://www.somafabshop.com/shop/soma-high-rider-xl-quill-28-6-22-2-290mm-4984#attr=2406

These are the only risers that can make a typical "large" (usually about
60cm) bike from yesteryear comfortable for me. I love them, but keep in
mind that they are machined rather than forged and heat treated like a
Nitto product, so probably don't use one on a mountain bike that will see
rough trail use.

 Thanks for the replies, everyone.

A few asked about the chain jumping/skipping/slipping. When the
chain is under load it slips or clunks repeatedly. It's kind of like
 when
you're in the wrong gear and you need to trim the gear to get it
 right. But
no amount of trimming is fixing the issue.

I've tried three different derailers, same problem. The cassette
was new in summer of 2022 and I haven't ridden in the three big gears
enough to wear out the teeth of the cogs. It's an S-Ride 7s from
 Rivendell,
it's an 11-32. The crank is the same age, installed last summer.
 SunXCD
crank with TA Specialites rings, 42/26. I don't see any issues with
 the
wheel (it's running true) or with worn cassette or chainring teeth.
 Also no
 play in the freehub body.

The elongated hole: It could be the derailer is flexing in the
hole, hard to determine this off the bike. Derailer seems seated when
 I try
to move it around in my hand, doesn't wobble.

I have *not yet* tried installing a different wheel and cassette.
That will be next. Should have tried that *much* earlier in the
 process.
