Hi Chester,

I thank-you for your truthful and reality check, regarding the
impossibility of feeling secure over and through the internet these days.
It is like you can run, but you cannot hide from the vast available
information on the internet about you and other people.

Re: [RBW] Re: ATTENTION ! Someone posted on r/Rivendell_Bicycles the map of Rivendell bike owners

2023-09-19 Thread Chester
I don't want to come across as being an alarmist or encouraging people to
be paranoid but if someone has your full name and city of residence, it can
take just a few seconds of Internet searching to get your address. It's
easier to find the right listing if the name is more unique and/or the city
is smaller.

It's pretty much impossible to obscure yourself if you shop online. When
you enter in your purchasing/shipping information, that information will
get resold to companies that sell access to databases. But, without paying
a dime, it's easy to look up a name and find current and prior addresses,
phone numbers, e-mail addresses, names of people one lived with, etc.
There's also harvesting of property tax records and other data sources.

All that said, I doubt that there is much appeal in a bike thief trying to
specifically target Rivendell owners for home burglaries. There are much
more common and more valuable bicycles to target that are also much more
easy to sell on the down-low. And there are a lot of more seemingly
prevalent ways for thieves to find targets. Follow riders they see riding
expensive rigs. Drive through neighborhoods and notice what's inside of
open garages. Look for $1000+ bike racks on vehicles. Or just take an angle
grinder out on the streets.

It seems the Reddit post was deleted but the original map is easy to

Thanks. It's a cool bike. Honestly, the best part may have been meeting the
original owner, who looked eerily similar to myself and drove the same make
vehicle btw. He was a super nice. We stood around in his garage for a short
bit and chatted about Rivs and the city. He gave me a Rivendell coffee mug
and some other bits. It was a very nice experience overall. I've had this
experience more often than not with Riv people; they're a good lot, I'd say.

[RBW] Re: Clem L: Color It Mine!

2023-09-19 Thread Kiley Demond
Wah! My HE (husband equivalent) has been helping me set it up (a far cry
from putting my Cheviot together by myself 7 years ago). Anyway, the rear
wheel is out of true. I talked to Will and I am taking it to a bike shop to
have the appropriate spokes tightened to get it back true. My plan is to
ride it stock (except the seat & seat post) for a couple of days before I
start considering alterations and component swaps. First thing I noticed
(while on it in my living room ) was that the saddle (my Rivet saddle on
the Nitto set-back post) doesn't have to be as far back as on the Cheviot.
However, the Tosco bars may be a bit too short, but again... stock for a
week.

I'll be back as soon as I actually get to ride it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Test post: I'm RBW Owners Bunch!

2023-09-19 Thread Josiah Anderson
Same here, reading in Gmail in Firefox on Mac OS. Bill was "RBW Owners
Bunch" in the original post here, as was everyone else on all my Google
groups (with their respective names) until about 11:20am Mountain time
today. Back to normal now. Obviously since they're emails for me the
previously sent messages with the bug are still showing up as such, but no
new ones are as far as I can tell.

[RBW] Re: Test post: I'm RBW Owners Bunch!

2023-09-19 Thread Bill Lindsay
I wasn't trying to communally debug. I was just seeing if it was just me,
and letting others it's not just them.

For me, the issue has gone away. For roughly an hour today, "everybody's"
handle was "RBW Owners Group" on the RBW Owners Group. Everybody's handle
on the 650B Group was "650B". About a third of the users on internet-bob
had the username "internet-bob". It appears to have cleared up. I'm on a
MacBook Air (OS Ventura 13.5.2), and Safari is my browser.

This is the first I'm hearing of this problem, which I have seen neither
here nor on iBOB (nor on any of the other Google Groups I check in to
regularly: CR, 650B, Bicycle Lifestyle, a couple of non-bikey groups).

The issue may be specific to particular OSes/browsers/browser versions, so
just saying "I have/don't have the problem" really doesn't narrow things
down much. If you're trying to communally troubleshoot this, it would
probably be useful for the expansion of collective knowingness to post:

1) Your viewing platform (computer/smartphone/tablet make/model/OS)

2) Browser or email client?

3) Browser/email client make/model/version (e.g., Firefox 115.2.1)

So to kick it off: 2015 MacBook Pro macOS 10.14.6/Safari 14.1.2

Leah and Sarah, I've passed your support to Mathilde to which she said

And also, I wouldn't say I crashed twice, more like I had to bail from the

two from those damn bear trap pedals!)
