OK, how's this for retro? I recently purchased a very retro English-
made Pashley (see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=ryYZ11HU788), and wanted a headlight to match. I found an antique
bicycle headlamp from the 1890s and replaced the inner carbide
workings with a Lumotec headlight

I agree. Pointing it farther down the road does seem to work better,
particularly in lighting up road signs. The beam's cutoff at the top
is quite sharp, so there's little worry that you'll blind oncoming

I would run a rag lightly moistened with oil inside the seat tube to
get rid of any surface rust, then grease and insert the seat post.
Maybe spray a little Boeshield or FrameSaver down the seat tube and
into the top tube while the post is out--SF can get a little moist.

I have a gently used Silver Hupe for sale: $20 shipped in the CONUS.

One option to consider would be an XO laptop from One Laptop Per
Child. I have one, and they're pretty much indestructible--no moving
parts, waterproof keyboard, etc. I haven't taken it touring, but I'm
sure it would do fine. The downside to the XO for you (aside from the
small keyboard)

Found these photos hanging on the wall at a bakery in Ukiah. The Tour
de France riders in the early days were *very* Riv-ish ... they would
have looked totally at home riding a Quickbeam, since they all rode

Break-in for my Brooks saddles isn't an issue. I have them on almost
all of my bikes, and they have been (with one exception) comfortable
right out of the box. They get *more* comfortable as they get more
use (the saddle on my Quickbeam has the most miles in it, and it
supremely comfy).

spacers would be easy to make. Hard part would be getting the initial
spacing right, given the variety in chainstay lengths. But once you
had that set, just add or take off 1/8th inch per tooth and you're set.

Willie had a great time. We had done a 75-mile ride on single bikes a
few months ago--he finished this ride feeling much better.
Hardest part was getting him to eat enough. He ran out of gas at
about 80 miles, so we pulled into a restaurant. He showed the salad
bar no mercy.
