[RBW] Re: Painted Hunqua

2010-08-31 Thread Jim
I agree it is fantastic. I also am dreaming and scheming, thinking of
rational reasons to get it by the budget committee (my loving wife who
is near the end of her patience with my bike fetish.) Harris Cyclery's
Elton Pope Lance's rationalization (on his web site) is a classic that
I look to for inspiration. Jim D. Massachusetts

WOW! It looks awesome. I was definitely anti-diagonal when it was
suggested and was disappointed when they decided to go for it. Now I
have to admit that I was wrong, it looks great and I am dreaming and
 scheming.

 Any other crossovers out there?

 Cheers!

 Here's the SO's breakdown:

 58cm Prototype
 Phil Wood Rims
 Velocity Synergy
 Jack Brown Blues
 Brooks B17
Prototype Nitto Handlebar (I'm not sure which Model)
 Shimano Brake Levers
 16/19 White Industries Freewheel
 17/19 Surly Dingle Cog Fixed
 Sugino Crank 44T/48T
 Shimano Seatpost
 Shimano Canti's
 Kool-Stop Brake Pads

Thanks to everyone on this list for all of the great advice!

You can't buy a frame-only QB, so it's hard to compare this price to a new
bike.  Any opinions about the price point?

My knees won't take a fixed- or single-speed, so would I lose a lot of style
points for adding a derailer with a claw adapter?  Is it even possible with
those dropouts?  How about a multi-speed rear hub?

I love my Bombadil, but it's not exactly nimble.  How does the QB ride?

 Thanks!

[RBW] For Sale: Sackville Slickersack/Nitto Platrack

2013-06-30 Thread Jim
Hi Folks:

My first foray into selling on this forum, but I've realized that the
Slickersack/Platrack combo is bigger than I really need, and also sits
pretty low on my big ol' 2TT AHH. So I need to sell it to fund the
purchase of a Sackville Bar Sack and accompanying Nitto BarSackRack.

Up for sale is:

 - Sackville Slickersack
 - Nitto Platrack

They are lightly used, completely undamaged and all hardware is included.
Pictures are here:

https://plus.google.com/photos/102411392699939180397/albums/5895396665763489473?authkey=CJO6jaidtIyc_gE

These two products go together, neither is worth much for cycling without
the other. They have been discontinued by Riv, and don't come up for sale
often, so here is your chance to have a complete set in very good
condition. Price is $250, including shipping to CONUS. I'll ship wherever
you like at an additional charge, which will be whatever it costs me to
ship it. Paypal works, other arrangements can be made upon request.

You also need a front rack to mount these. The Nitto Mark's Rack is what I
used, and I believe the Nitto Mini-front is compatible as well. Left to my
own devices, I'd keep the Mark's Rack on my bike, but if you want it, i'll
throw it in for an additional $110 (new is $130). Be warned that the
struts have been cut down to size; I think I took an inch or so off. You
can get replacements from Riv.

I'll also entertain a straight-up trade of the Slickersack/Platrack for the
aforementioned Bar Sack/BarSackRack combo in similar condition.

contact me at jamesfekete at gmail.com

Thanks for your consideration,

Jim in Boulder

[RBW] Re: Jan Heine says I can ride my Bombadil forever!

2012-03-15 Thread Jim
Well, materials science WAS my major, and Jan is right on the bean in my
opinion. I have some bike experience to back it up as well, as my pre-riv
bike was a fillet-brazed Schwinn that I bought new in 1971, and still have
today. No difference in the ride that i can see. The one way a frame
COULD get flexier, is if you get a fatigue crack growing in a highly
stressed joint, that will increase compliance and ultimately fail
completely. So, if you ever do seem to think your bike isn't as stiff as
you remember, better do a thorough check of the frame.

The issue with leaf springs is that they operate very close to (and
sometimes a bit past) the yield strength of the material, and over time and
a few potholes you can permanently deform them. Steel bicycle frames don't
operate anywhere near yield.

OK, that's not a direct quote. He didn't say that specifically, but in
today's blog post, Jan *does* debunk the notion that steel frames go
soft with use. They don't. You can't break in a steel bike and make it
get more flexible for comfort and planing, and you can't wear out a steel
frame in terms of stiffness. It doesn't get flexier with use. You might
break it with use, but you won't make it flexier. Good read and
uncontroversial for many of us, but definitely counter to the popular
notion in the cycling community in general.

[RBW] Re: Cutting back on the clutter

I put a Nitto rack and a large saddlesack on the back of my Homer, and the
platrack/slickersack combo on the front. I'm not going back, this bike
gets used mainly for commuting and errands, so surplus storage is a real
blessing. In combination with public transportation, Homer has replaced a
car at our house and, well, cars need trunks! Maybe i'll change it up if i
start doing longer rides, but those opportunities haven't presented
themselves yet.

[RBW] Re: How long did your Brooks saddle take to break in?

2012-03-27 Thread Jim
I'm in the unique position of having a 42 year old B-17 on my old Schwinn
SS from the early 70s, and a 4-month old one on my Homer. The old one is
significantly more compliant than the new one, and rides very comfortably.
I've been riding in 15 mile chunks or less, and been riding the new saddle
to break it in, but if I were to do a longer ride, i'd probably swap in the
old one. The new one, though harder, hits my sitbones just right, it's
quite comfortable for the types of riding I do, but I still think I'm going
to take it off and slather up the inside surface with Oberhaufs to get just
a bit more give to it. I think if I could do that, it might be as comfy or
even more comfy than the old one (the old one may just need to be tightened
up some as well)

By Williamsburg, VA (13 miles) the saddle was like a comfortable club

Still have that saddle on that bike and it serves my needs on both

be longer had I prepared for protecting it from soaking sweat on that
XC ride. Soon found a plain shower cap in a country convenience store,
contingency resolved, but effects beginning to show.

Maybe a Brooks (never rained on) actually has a service life despite

I've got chronic lower back issues, and would like to offer a plug for
Pilates as a way to make the lower back a bit more robust. The doctor that
recommended it told me that when you start to get to the age where such
problems occur, you need some activity that regularly lengthens and
strengthens the back, for which Pilates is quite effective. I've gone from
an average of three flare-ups per year to one in the past two years.
FWIW i ride drops and have their tops at the height of the saddle.

probably the most telling issue is that my knees remain about 7 away

eyeballed vertical plane separating my knee from the bars). The
method I used to take this measurement was to spin backwards holding

 the knee.

Has anyone else faced this challenge? Solution? Does the knee-bar

[RBW] Hip Trouble

2012-04-09 Thread Jim
I was interested to see the thread on knee issues, as I have a similar
question about hips. Unfortunately, last Friday night I was riding a bike
lane downtown, and a car door opened up suddenly in front of me, which
threw me and Homer to the ground. Homer came out fairly well, but I ended
up with a broken femur that was surgically repaired the following
day .Police investigated and the driver was cited, and I expect to be
compensated by his auto insurance.

Being in Boulder, nearly everyone taking care of me, including the surgeon,
are avid bikers, and are assuring me that I will make a full recovery from
this injury, probably back on the bike in a couple months. But I'd be
interested if there are any of the folks like us out there (i'm 54 years
old) that have gone through this and if they have any wisdom to provide,
Also, when your bike is in a crash like that, I assume you should have a
competent mechanic give it a through inspection to make sure things are
ok. Any other words of wisdom for assuring the safety of a crashed bike?

I'm finishing up day 2 after surgery and am doing well and feeling
fine. Other than the hip, just a touch of road rash and a bruise from where
my shoulder hit the door. This was a case where wearing the helmet
probably saved me from a closed head injury.

Thanks all for your support, I really appreciate it. NIce to hear more
stories of hip injuries with full recoveries. I showed my surgeon a
picture of Homer today, and he told me i'd be back up and riding just as I
had before.

Regarding helmets, one thing interesting to note, both the police and the
driver's insurance investigator asked me if I was wearing one. That
indicates to me that they weigh helmet usage in determining how to assign
fault (like speed , they asked that too, to me and the eyewitnesses). As
it turns out, the driver's insurance has accepted full responsibility.

surgeon, are avid bikers, and are assuring me that I will make a full
recovery from this injury, probably back on the bike in a couple months.
But I'd be interested if there are any of the folks like us out there
(i'm 54 years old) that have gone through this and if they have any wisdom
to provide, Also, when your bike is in a crash like that, I assume you
should have a competent mechanic give it a through inspection to make sure
things are ok. Any other words of wisdom for assuring the safety of a
 crashed bike?

I'm finishing up day 2 after surgery and am doing well and feeling
fine. Other than the hip, just a touch of road rash and a bruise from where
my shoulder hit the door. This was a case where wearing the helmet
probably saved me from a closed head injury.

It seemed that a turn button fastener would make my Slickersack go on

[RBW] Re: Friction Shifting and Riding Tips?

2012-04-18 Thread Jim
I have this 25 year hole in my riding history, stopped around 1987, just
restarted last year. So i've never NOT shifted friction. Before my
Hilsen, I was grinding gears through an old (and miserable)
schwinn-approved Huret. That will get upgraded if i ever bring that bike
back on line...

I've noticed some chain-skipping in certain rear cogs on my Hilsen (i've
been riding the center chain ring pretty exclusively), and it can always be
resolved by a bit of trimming the shifter, usually one click (silver
bar-ends) one way or another. I've rationalized it to myself that the
relation between the position of the chain for the various ratchet clicks
of the shifter are more suited for some of the cogs than others (i.e.,
there are three click positions that work for some gears, only two for
others, so those are more likely to result in skippy or clunky shifting).
Interestingly, skipping is almost always a downshifting event for me,
upshifts are solid and delightful. My old Schwinn had similar, but more
severe problems, i could get the chain between cogs on that one, resulting
in no drive at all, just a free spinning crank. Fun when it happened
approaching a big hill.

 - when i feel like i need more speed, i shift, when i feel like i am not
going to be able to get up the hill, i shift.

But I never really learned the right way to do this. I have learned a
little about friction shifting just from poking around (lightening up on
the cranks when I am about to shift, as an example) but haven't seen a
dedicated thread to this, nor have I found a good resource. I know for
many of you this is intuitive basic stuff, but I never learned how to ride
a bike from anyone that actually knew what they are doing.

I generally stay in the middle ring on my front chainring (I have a
triple) and use all of the back gears until I need more, and then I shift
to either the big or small chainring. I am cognizant of cross gearing, but
am probably guilty of doing it once in a while.

I have consistently had problems with chains slipping, throwing chains
(both off the big and granny rings) across multiple bikes, which leads me
to believe I am part of the problem.

So how do you ride to ensure that you are treating the bike the way it
 should be treated?

[RBW] Re: Why I Like Commuting On My Bike

2012-04-30 Thread Jim
Amen! My commute is 7 miles, 35-45 minutes depending on traffic and wind.
Most of my commute is on MUPs, which are really delightful in the morning,
though they get pretty busy on nice spring and summer days. Clothing
choices aren't an issue, in Boulder, even in summer, the temps in the
mornings are usually in the 50's, sometimes even in the 40s. So I can wear
my work duds on the way in without sweating them up too bad, and peel down
to riding clothes for the ride home. I'm doubly blessed, as there is
public transporation that can take me door to door in both directions
during rush hour, and they carry bikes on the buses. So, we've managed to
actually ditch one car. Makes the investment in a Hilsen seem a bargain.
Can't wait to get back to it. And I agree that after that ride in the
morning, I am in a much better state of consciousness to start the work
day. I really enjoy the commute.

Jim in Boulder.

We have had changeable spring conditions here in the Northern Calif Bay

I arrived home wet, cold, and happy.
I'm a much happier camper when I ride as compared to when I drive.

Portland. I'd added a leg to SF when I discovered it wasn't very expensive
to add the leg to my ticket and I got a great deal at The Mosser in SF that
made an extra 5 days possible. Admittedly it's a tiny little room, but
holds me and my bike so there you go.

Today I took the BART out to Walnut Creek thinking that Grant would be off
on his book tour but he was in town, actually doing some other publicity
stuff. I got to meet him in person, get a copy of his book, and then worked
with Vince on a little something else.

I had my PBH remeasured and sure enough, I'm still mostly leg, at least
 95.5 (and I'd thought I was 94).

I test rode the 64 Sam and the 62 Hunq.

Both were fantastic. The Hunq was just slightly more fantastic for me. I
stress the for me bit because it could easily be the other way around for
someone else. I just like really fat tires and riding on the Big Apples
they had attached showed me just how comfortable that bike can be.

I went with the stock build kit for a couple of reasons. First it's good
stuff and does save me a bit on the build. In a perfect world I might have
toyed with a few things but that would have added unnecessarily to the
cost. In the future I'll upgrade when things wear out.

The only thing that concerns me is the Alba bars. They were really nice on
the test Hunq I rode, though I'm a moustache guy. I'm thinking that I may
swap the Albas on the Hunq with the M-bars on my QB. I use the QB around
town for the most part. That'll be like getting two new bikes. :-)

After spending all that money I spent the afternoon on the trails leading
up to Mount Diablo. I didn't go up because it was hot and late in the day,
I hadn't eaten much today, and I only had one bottle of water. That and I
didn't want to climb 2,000 feet after all the climbing in Oregon. It was
still a lovely day for a ride and next time I'm in the Bay Area I know
exactly how to get there. :-)

All in all it was great to meet Grant, Vince is a great guy, the Hunq is a
super bike, and I'm still a bike short, I only have 'n' bikes.

My arsenal now includes (as of July)

 62 Hunq
 66 Quickbeam
 ?? RB-1 (in Hilo)
 Bike Friday New World Tourist
Fujiyama (a house brand for McCully Bicycle back in the day) single speed
beater (freshly powder coated and shod with Big Apples)

That'll do it for a while.

claim to have sufficient space for brake levers and shifters and the
560's have all sorts of space, I am running flat bar brake levers and
Paul thumbs and testing them with ergo grips.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Touring Bar on Atlantis - First impressions...

2011-06-08 Thread Jim
Nice set-up. what is and where did you get the fixture which holds the
shift levers? Jim D (Massachusetts)

On Jun 8, 12:59 am, Rene Sterental orthie...@gmail.com wrote:
I just installed the Nitto Touring Bar aka Butterfly or Trekking bar on my
Atlantis and rode it for the first time today on my Bike/Caltrain commute to
work. I'm trying to find a bar that will allow me to ride comfortably with
no neck pain and after having used the 48cm Noodles, Albatross and the
Moustache Bars with mixed success, I decided to explore the concept of the
 Trekking bars.

I mounted the bars on a Nitto Dirt Drop 25.4/10cm stem to avoid using shims.
After checking out several configuration options online, I opted to go for a
variation of the standard setup to get started. Brake levers on the ends of
the bars (section closest to the rider and to keep it clean, mounted my
bar-end shifters on Paul's Thumbies that I mounted on the vertical section
of the stem. I debated on mounting the brake levers on the front like you do
on M-bars, but since the fronts are flatter, I wasn't sure I would like
pulling on the lever on that position. I might still try it, but for now
decided to try the default brake lever position on the bars. I haven't taped
them and won't until I'm sure that is the way I want to keep them.

 First impressions are:
 - Surprisingly comfortable after fine tuning the height of the bars and
rotating them so the are almost parallel to the ground. May still tweak that
a little bit, but I've almost got it close to perfect by the time I came
home in the evening. Bar height for me is similar to the recommended M-bar
setup, front of the bar higher than the saddle and ends are basically level
with the top of the saddle.
 - Extremely well handling of the bike, particularly on turns. While it
always felt as if I had to somehow work the turns being careful not to
over/under do it with the Noodle bars, with the Touring bars the turns were
effortless and very cool. No matter if I had my hands on the front or on the
rear, making the bike turn was incredibly smooth and felt amazing. Perhaps
it's due to their increased width over the Noodles, perhaps it's just the
overall fit that improves the handling so much, at least for me.
 - Standing on the pedals to climb makes it very easy to hit the bar with the
legs, but it's easy to get around it by slightly turning the body when
dancing on the pedals instead of pushing the bike sideways. I only do it
for short stretches so it's not a big deal for me, but it's definitely not a
bar you would choose if you stood on your pedals often.
 - There is just a hint of flexibility on the bar that makes it extremely
comfortable on rough stuff, especially when riding it upright with your
hands on the closest sections of the bars where the brakes are.

After I had rotated the bar forward, the position was very comfortable and
much to my surprise, I realized that I didn't develop any shoulder/neck pain
at all. Later in the evening I could feel some tightness on my neck, but I
had had no discomfort at all during the ride, even though I pushed it hard
for a bit. When riding hard, the hands fall naturally on the angle between
the front and side sections and it's quite comfortable. I'm wondering if
I'll prefer the brake levers there, but so far I think I'm going to leave
them where they are. It seems you want the hands on the brakes when riding
at slow speeds in traffic when you're upright, rather than when you're
stretched in the forward position for faster riding. Still, I'm not so sure
so I'll probably try some levers on the front section at some point. The
brake levers I put are the Tektro FL750 City Brake Levers and I got them
from VO. They seem a perfect fit for these bars in the current position, as
 if designed purposely for it.

More feedback to come, but in the meantime you can check some pictures
 here:http://tinyurl.com/3ur7e7m

its native habitat [outdoors!], and with a real camera
 soon:https://picasaweb.google.com/rexkerr/AHomerHilsenBuild#56283541924125...

More details on the build to come, but quickly:

Dia Compe non aero brake levers
 Silver bar-end shifters
Yellow cotton tape, 4 coats of amber shellac, jute twine (I like the rougher
 texture than hemp)
 Nitto Dirt Drop Stem
Nashbar Moustache bars (I wanted the wider width)
 Shimano LX r-der
 MicroShift f-der
 Sugino triple crankset
XT rear hub w/ CR18 rim
Shimano 3N80 dynohub w/ CR18 rim (wow, they're right, you really can't tell
 it's there, on or off!!)
Jack Brown 33.3 tires (the tougher ones -- green, blue, I forget)
 Velo Orange seatpost
Velo Orange Model 5 sprung touring saddle (ouch, it's HARD! [for now]  My
softer Brooks was bent in my recent crash, and two others are on other
 bikes!)
Velo Orange rear rack (forget the name right now -- held in place by the
 fender)
Velo Orange hammered al fenders (mounted to the rack -- if you look closely)
 Velo Orange Brass Bell
Planet Bike Blaze Dyamo Light (brighter than I expected!)

I think that's it actually... from memory, I might have missed something.

My gf keeps saying that it doesn't look like an expensive bike (while
repeating how much I spent!!) and when it was finally built up her and her
son both said that it looks old, like something from the 60s.  I wanted a
classic look, so I'm happy, but they expected something else [why, when my
old bike looked very similar, I don't know].  Her son said that he expected
an expensive bike to have racing handlebars and narrow tires... ugh...
 whatever.

Oh, and apologies to Grant, but the flat touring pedals that I purchased
from Riv were on my beater bike to try them out with the Powergrips. :-)  I
need some kneesaver spacers as they're too close to the cranks for my size
14 feet.  My Frogs are special ordered extra long spindles for that reason.

 -Rex

PS:  Why Air Homer?  I discovered after making the purchase that the
custom color code that I chose [Phantom Gray Metallic] was the color of
 Airwolf. :-)

[RBW] Intro

2011-09-12 Thread Jim
Since I am now the owner of a shiny new 64cm Sam Hillborne frame, which will
be transformed into a running bicycle by RBW in the next few weeks, I
thought I would say hi to y'all (actually, growing up near Pittsburgh, it
should be youns...) My wife and I moved to Boulder CO a year and a half
ago, and the access to good cycling got me in the saddle again, mainly just
commuting to work and into town at this point but I have aspirations to
travel a bit farther. My current daily driver is a '71 Schwinn SuperSport,
66 cm, pixs here if you are curious (
https://picasaweb.google.com/102411392699939180397/SuperSport?authuser=0feat=directlink)

I'm expecting the new Sam will help me get out of town with a little more
security than the Schwinn, which is feeling its age; I purchased it new with
the money from my first summer job in 1972. I figure a new bike once every
40 years isn't too much to ask for...

[RBW] Re: What's your Rivendell story?

2012-08-23 Thread Jim
With the money from my first job pumping gas in 1971 I purchased a Schwinn
Super Sport, fillet-brazed steel, typical mid-70s road bike build. Loved
that bike. Rode it off and on (mostly on) through high school, college,
first job, grad school and even commuted on it to my first job post-grad
school. Stopped riding it in the mid080's when job change, marriage to
non-biker, move to bike-unfriendly Detroit suburb caused me put it on the
shelf. But I never got rid of it.

Fast forward to 2010, now we live in Boulder, still have the bike, though
it's a bit creaky. Had to go to Denver to find a shop that would touch it
beyond putting new tires on it (Cycle Analyst on Pearl...recommended!) but
they got it back on the road, and I started riding it again, mainly
commuting to work. God it felt great to get back on a bike.

The following summer we shared a vacation with good friends from Michigan,
where we shared a houseboat in Sausilito. I had been looking for a new
bike, and because of my size, the big Rivs were on my short list. I kinda
knew we were close to WC, so I broached the subject of visiting Riv so I
could see their selection. Turns out my friend had lived in WC for many
years, had camped on Mt. Diablo with his dad, and going back for a visit to
his hold stomping grounds was already on the agenda. In addition, he owned
two early 90's Bridgestones. So, it wasn't a hard sell to make a stop at
Riv.

So, we wandered into the door that matched the address of the
companyand walked right into the shipping dept. Miesha gently escorted
us over to the showroom, and shortly thereafter, Grant came over to talk to
us. Having spent my career as a ferrous metallurgist, we had a lot to talk
about. I got to ride a Sam, and left the showroom ready to purchase. I
ended up with a Homer, because the Sam was a little too small, and was
riding it almost daily until my crash back in April. Still not back on the
bike yet, but getting closer every day.

I guess supplying the wrong alloy or the wrong temper are the same
problem in my book. You can run into this same issue when purchasing
(as some insurance companies permit) non-factory steel service parts
for auto crash repair. There is a big supply base in China for these
parts, but they either don't know, or don't care about the
manufacturers specifications. If it's magnetic, sinks in water and
rusts, it's steel.and that's good enough.

[RBW] Re: Busted Resurrectio Lug/WTB: 64cm Sam or other Riv frame

2011-10-27 Thread Jim
Hi Mike:

I have almost that exact bike on order right now. It's a 64cm Sam,
with the lugged seatpost, and rather than the Dirt Drop, they now
carry an extra long Nitto Talllux stem. My SH is 89cm, and my
current road bike is a 66 cm 1971 Schwinn Super Sport, which gets me
to 88cm with the seat post maxed out. The bars are about 2cm below
where I want them, and the Riv folks told me that this bike will allow
me to get them where I want them. Keven has been working with me on
it, so he should have good answers to your questions. I'm really
looking forward to the delivery, will let you know how it fits when I
get it.

Jim

On Oct 25, 7:38 pm, Mike On A Bike shaljia...@guilford.edu wrote:
 Jim,

Thanks for the informative reply on Sam-sizing. The Trek and the
Quickbeam I ride are both 64cm, but I feel I should go up to the max
with a Sam, being that my saddle height is 85cm, which puts me in the
65-67cm standard frame size on Rivendell's chart. I have about 16cm of
seatpost exposed on my 64's and I needed the Nitto lugged seatpost to
get the right reach, with a DirtDrop stem maxed out for bar height.

So, I would LOVE for a 60cm Taiwanese Sam to fit me well, but I am
concerned about undersizing given those issues. That being said, if I
understand your theory right, and a 60cm Sam would effectively fit
like a 66cm standard frame, I'd be all about it. Also, what is your
saddle height? I'd be interested to know, because maybe with the parts
 I've already used to adapt a maybe-too-small 64 frame, the 60cm Sam
 would work with those adjustments.

I emailed Keven today to begin to get my head around all of these
issues, and I'm sure I'll be well taken care of by Rivendell.

On Oct 25, 8:31 pm, James Warren jimcwar...@earthlink.net wrote:

  Mike,
What size was your Trek and what size non-sloping TT bike do you ride? I
think the largest those Treks came in was my size, 64 cm.

But sizing is different on the Sam. My Trek touring and Rambouillet size is
64 cm. However, the 60 cm Sam fits me just right. This is because the 6
degrees of TT upslope compared to 2 degrees of the Ram effectively adds 4
cm of height to the headtube. When the TT is around 60 cm long, every
degree of extra TT upslope angle adds 1 cm to the vertical position of the
head lug. That's the theory of it, and in practice, it works for me. I have
a 64 Ram, a 64 Atlantis, and a 60 Sam, and they all fit about the same.

So if the 64 Trek fit you well, maybe a 60 cm Taiwanese Sam is your size.
When the Sams originally came out, this different expanded method of
sizing was meant to fit people up to about my height (6'4) and only using
4 model sizes to do it with 60 cm being the largest. (It has since grown to
5 sizes, adding in the 64 cm to accomodate the really tall people. A 64
Bombadil or Sam should be like a 68 Atlantis.)

  But ask someone at Rivendell.

Subject: [RBW] Busted Resurrectio Lug/WTB: 64cm Sam or other Riv frame

Damn y'all, busted the headtube lug on my restored 1986ish Trek 520
today. Picture of the carnage available here:http://imgur.com/FbafN

I noticed the fork felt really shaky when cornering for a few days,
maybe a week, and when it felt unsafely, 'bout-to-blow shaky after a
short ride today, I checked it out to notice a crack running all
around the headtube lug. It managed to make it home the 3 miles I
needed to get home, but sadly, my reclamation project and it's $300
powdercoat are headed for the scrapyard.

Given the exuberant faith we all have in lugged steel, I thought this
bike would surely last me a decade and many thousands of miles, hence
the steep powdercoat investment. Unfortunately, I am now down a frame
that has all kinds of fancy Rivvish parts attached to it. I have a
Quickbeam as my other ride, but I am now looking to upgrade to a
  Rivendell road frame.

I feel foolish for not just saving up for a new Sam in the first
place, and you can tell I was pining for one by the copycat orange
powdercoat. Alas, I am looking to get (ideally) a used 64cm Sam to
replace this, but I'm also interested in any tall Atlantis or Rambo or
Redwood or other stout-enough-for-touring Rivendell frames that might
be out there. I'm sure the Waterford 64 that RBW sells is sweet, but
the $450 markup over Taiwanese is a little rich for my blood.

SO, I would love to hear about any tall-person Rivendell frames that
might be out there for sale. Sorry to abuse any illusions that lugged
  steel is indestructible, too!

[RBW] Intro from new Riv rider

2012-01-29 Thread Jim
Greetings:

I've been lurking here for a while, starting when I was waiting for Riv to
send me my new A Homer Hilsen, which arrived in November. It's a 72cm, 2TT
version, which is needed to manage my 6'8, 280# frame. It is a fairly
standard Riv build (like me, built for comfort, not speed.), though the
wheels are Velocity LX Cliffhangers and the tires are 38mm Schwalbe
Duremes, recommended for this heavy duty application. I took a couple
pictures during its shakedown ride after I assembled it.

https://picasaweb.google.com/102411392699939180397/JimSAHHPhotos?authuser=0authkey=Gv1sRgCPXblb_MhoruWwfeat=directlink

Since those were taken I added a large Sackville saddle sack and some other
commuterish items, and have been mainly riding it between home and town, a
15 mile roundtrip, for commuting to work and shopping. I'm hoping to
explore more of the countryside as the weather improves. Home is Boulder,
CO, so there is a lot to explore!

This is the first new bicycle I've had in 40 years, my other bike is a 1972
Schwinn Super Sport, which I still ride. It hasn't got much use though,
since Homer arrived, which shouldn't be much of a surprise. Pics of that
bike are here if you are interested:

I look forward to participating here and getting to know you folks.

Re: [RBW] Re: Intro from new Riv rider

Wow.thanks for all the kind words, guys! I really am enjoying the
ride.

@ Marty. I'll definitely get it up on that flicker group. Nice set of
bikes there!

@ Forrest No name yet. Easy enough to just call it Homer, not like
there are a bunch of them around here ;-)

@ rperks That saddle to rack distance is such that it is a REAL stretch to
install the large saddle sack, if you zip tie it to the rack, you can't
reach the saddle with the straps. I ended up hooking the saddle straps
first, then tieing to the rack. But it's stretched tight.

@ Andrew Yeah, you qualify! :-)

I had to take it off active duty tonight, though. I've hit a few bumps
kinda hard over the past few weeks, and coming home tonight, a slight noise
developed, that syncd to wheel rpm. So, I put it on the rack tonight and
the rear wheel was ..ahem...a little out of true (noise was brake rub), and
a few of the spokes on the drive side were ahem...loose.Wheel
truing is out of my paygrade, so I'll be taking it to a local shop. Which
one is still up in the air. When I needed some work done on the Schwinn,
no one would touch ittoo old; I finally got a lead to a shop in Denver
(Cycle Analystrecommended!) who took care of it. I'd like to find
someone local and Riv-friendly, so if there are any Boulderites lurking
here that could give me a recommendation, I'd really appreciate it! I'm
going out of town in a couple day for about a week, so not in a huge hurry,
but would like to get it fixed shorly after my return.

Thanks,

Jim in Boulder

[RBW] Re: 2013 Riding Plans anyone?

2013-01-07 Thread Jim
I'm just looking forward (and i mean really looking forward) to getting
back on my Homer for the first time since I lost the battle with a parked
car door and fractured my hip back in April. Complications that we need
not go into resulted in me still walking with a cane until Thanksgiving,
but I'm well on my way to a full recovery now, and will be back out on the
road once the weather breaks and I get some of my cardio capability back.
First goal will be to get back to commuting to work, after that we will see!

April - Tour de Hills in Harrison Arkansas - One day ride
May - Three State Three Mountain Challenge - One day ride
May - Horsey Hundred - two day ride
 May- Weekend overnight
June- One week fully loaded tour... leaning towards Train to Chicago then
 ride home.
July - try to survive heat during local club rides and around town stuff.
August - One week fully loaded Cowboy Trail
September - 2 weeks and do the Erie Canal or Natchez Trace or USBR 35 From
Sault Ste. Marie to New Buffalo - Leaning towards Erie Canal at the Moment
though logistically it's the toughest of the three.
October - Hilly Hundred 2 day ride
November - FestiVELO 4 day ride

Looking forward to 2013 and seeing what y'all are doing..

 Happy Trails

 VO Gran Cru brake calipers

Re: [RBW] Re: Can you fit 130 mm modern group specs with old 126 mm spacing?

2013-02-21 Thread Jim
Jim, based on my experience, you are right on the money. When I got out to
Colorado and wanted someone to just look over my 1971 Schwinn SS, no one in
boulder would even touch it, and only one shop in Denver would. That
particular shop (CycleAnalyst) had an experienced mechanic that did a nice
job of getting the bike safe again. But it wasn't easy. And I wasn't
trying to update it.

I can certainly envision several reasons why your LBS told you that.

It could be that the shop employee was inexperienced and doesn't know much
 about older bikes.

Or it could be that the shop doesn't want the liability associated with
installing parts that are, technically speaking, incompatible with the
 frame.

Or maybe, they've gone down the rabbit hole of modernizing old bikes in
the past, and feel that it isn't worth the trouble. I know that I've had
experience with that kind of thing, where some unforeseen and seemingly
trivial incompatibility issue causes the project to take 5x longer than
quoted and in the end, the solution was a kludge that isn't 100%
 satisfactory.

Or maybe you're the fifth guy this week who wanted to put a modern parts
group on an old bike, and they figured that, like the previous four, you'd
balk at the high price, and it would be just easier for everybody if they
cut to the chase and say no. After all, buying a parts group and wheelset
and the labor to install it all can often cost as much as or more than a
new bike that has the same parts and wheelset.

[RBW] Re: Rich-built wheels

2013-07-20 Thread Jim
I'm one of those guys too, current weight is 285 (height is 6'8, partially
the reason). And my preferred riding takes me on lots of unpaved trails
and transitions on and off them from pavement. I'm used to popping spokes
on a regular basis when I miss getting off the seat on particularly bad
bumps, or when I stand up to go up a short but steep grade. But I got a
set of Rich-built Velocity cliffhangers, and I haven't even managed to
knock them out of true to any noticeable degree. I'm a fan.

Rich Lesnik is reputed to be the best wheel builder around, tho I think he
is too modest to claim that position. He is a member of the club.

Rich Lesnik has the reputation. Wheelbuilding is his specialty and he
seems to be considered a master. He builds dozen(s) of wheels per week --
for starters, he builds all the wheels for Rivendell, whose reputation you
probably know -- so if practice make perfect, he sure gets the practice. He
gets repeated high recommendations on the SF Randonneurs maillist. The rear
wheel he rebuilt for me 3 years ago (old hub, new rim) has gone over 20,000
miles without needing a single re-true. I have used other wheelbuilders
with good reputations, but none have built me a wheel which stays true like
that. At that time, Rich was recommended to me by a particularly large /
heavy (200lb) / strong GPC member who told me that Rich's wheels can stand
 up to *him*.

After I managed to destroy a wheel that a local shop claimed was
bomb-proof, I called Rich. I was in the final stages of qualifying for
PBP and wanted one less thing to worry about. Rich built me a rear wheel on
an expedited basis so that I could ride my 600k brevet the following week.
This wheel has been with me since 2011 with many thousands of miles, PBP,
and local commuting. I am one of those 200 lb. riders, so when I load up
the bike for a long brevet, the wheels get a workout. The wheel Rich built
has never had an issue, never needed truing, and just keeps rolling.

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for Saddle Bag--mostly for books

2013-08-23 Thread Jim
Another vote for saddlesacks. I have a large, in which I can stuff books,
papers and a laptop for commuting between home, work and a course I'm
teaching at the university.

One question: Does anyone use the quick release with a large saddlesack?
If so, do you have a good method for quick release of the sack from the
rack? I'm thinking to just run a strap through it and the rack, but a bit
of a fiddle to get on and off. Currently I have it zip tied to the rack.
TIA

[RBW] Re: Used Bike Pricing - General - Mindless.. Dribble

2013-09-06 Thread Jim
Hi Kelly:

If it makes you feel any better, i've stared at your FS posts for that
bike. Like Tom, I'm a 100 PBH. Like you, I have an AHH, and that bike
does just about everything I need, and can't envision why I would add
another bike at this point. I have a spot for it in the garage, currently
occupied by my 66cm '71 Schwinn Super Sport that I bought in high school
and have just never brought my self to part with, even though it's really
small for me. Maybe someday...

So this is subjective and my opinion and thoughts. or questioning

I recently attempted half heartedly to sell a couple of bikes. Only
posted here and being 68cm I figured that since I was asking a fair to me
but not great deal on price it was a long shot on selling. Then I see a
68cm Orange RAM sell for 1300 or so bucks complete. My thought was this
guy is nuts... he should get that for frame alone. Then thought.. jerk
makes it harder to sell mine.. :)Anyway the way I have purchased and
looked at things are savings and value to me.

So if I get a frame and repaint it with total cost being roughly half of
new then I have essentially a new frame at 1/2 price. I tend to add 500 to
the cost of used frame in my mine for the repaint then take half of new and
 go from there. shrug.
The build or builds I do usually range in the 1500 to 2000 on top of the
cost of the frame. Sometimes less sometimes more.. (like why my RAM will
 never sell)

I also look at the 68cm frames as being rather special and worth more than
say a 56 cm or other common frame that fits 80% of the people in the world.
So tall people unless you want a got no reason song song written after
 you quit giving bikes away.
Note to person selling me the 68cm Atlantis .. disregard as this will be a
good feeling sell and giving away is OK this time only. (if only he was
 giving it away)

Anyway I would usually just buy new if savings aren't that great, but
since 68cm frames are far and few between one must get what they can.
Which seems to be my mistaken belief. That because they are rare, no
longer made, no other alternatives that offer the same benefits unlike
smaller frames... surly for example... that tall folks would covet and jump
at an opportunity to grab them up.

Back to me buying an Atlantis I don't really need since I didn't sell any
of my other bikes. Does it really fit, I've convinced my self that my
perfect number of bikes is 3. (4 if you add in a unicycle or is that 3.5)

Tour Bike = Bombadil - Albatross - SON28 New Dyno on front - Phil on
back - Velocity Atlas Rims 2mm straight gage spokes.
Event Bike = RAM - 48cm Noodles, SONdelux Dyno on front -Grand Bois
HIgh Flange Rear on Velo Orange Raid Rims with 1.8 / 1.5 double butted -
Rene Herse front crank triple.. sweet for me.. only bitch.. I miss my
 kickstand.
Day Bike = AHH(difference in the day bike and event bike is
bigger tires, fenders, racks and room for large saddle sack and camera
equipment... not to mention kickstand. Ideally replace this with the
 Atlantis.
Built up with New SON28 and White
Industries rear with Velo Orange Raid Rims. Lots of love for this bike..
been a go to for a long time. Century rides etc. None of my bikes have
taken on as many roles as the AHH!
I've toured with it. Built it as my
event bike and now have it as my semi tour day bike for photography. The
700x37 Panaracer tires are really comfy. Just is always right there to
fill in for any role I choose to set it up as.

So the Atlantis really isn't needed.. it's wanted for bigger tires the AHH
just can't fit.But since no one will buy what I have .. I need a role
for the Atlantis. If it carries the load as well as the Bombadil I would
add my bombadil to the sell list to get back to 3 bikes.
Some combination to fit the Tour / Event / Day Bike (go to bike so to
 speak)

My quickbeam rides alike a charm. I just don't ride it enough. I like
to ride my bikes not look at them or work on them all the time. They get
dirty and paint gets scratched. (thank god for ease or repainting)

So if I keep 5 bikes I need a unique role for each so they get ridden or
sell 2. Quickbeam of course. However I am not will to give them away..
(make sense?) (answer: not much of this post makes sense - drink or smoke
 something and try again)

Just thinking the Panracer 700x37 feel doggie and thinking about going
back to JB's ... may have to use it for a 60 miler on Saturday and see if
it's me or if they are just really comfy and smooth thus feel slow or if

[RBW] Re: 71Hilsen on eBay

2013-10-16 Thread Jim
That is a sweet build. I have to tell you, though, that I ride that frame,
and it would be looong way down to those shifters. I wonder if the
seller is having standover issues as well, I have barely enough room over
the top tube, but run about double that amount of seat post ( I do have
38mm tires, vs. the 32mm on that bike.

[RBW] Re: Platrack Real World Feedback

2013-10-21 Thread Jim
I had the same setup as Erl, and agree that the platrack doesn't extend
further than the large saddlesack on the back. I did have issues using
some bike racks that required the front tire to squeeze between vertical
posts, doesn't work well with those lateral stays. But that is the only
issue I ran into. I personally didn't care for the look, and didn't really
need the storage, which is why I sold my setup. YMMV.

Best,

 OkDokee,

So i've been using a basket on my Nitto Mini Front for about a year,
overall happy with it, but with heavier loads it was a little wobbly (it
was secured with many zip-ties) it was never dangerous but i just wanted
something a little more secure to zip-tie to so picked up a platrack
 second-hand.

Now that i have it on there, wow, those stays that extend down to the
dropout are really out there, i just have it in the bike-stand at the
moment, so maybe it's just a spatial/visual perception issue, but it looks
like a wide stance. My question is for those who use the platrack on a
regular basis, any issue with the stays extending so far out to the sides?
Any other issues i'm not aware of with this rack?

Amazingly, nothing about the bikes in it. Hopefully an explanation will be
offered.
