While I've never tried beeswax, oil or similar, I also dislike the hard,
slick results that three or more fresh coats of shellac produce, so here's
my solution.
Try brushing on a coat of shellac, let it dry fully (doesn't take long),
then knock it back with a rag soaked in denatured alcohol.

I've lived on a steady diet of second hand, sub-500 mile B-17s that just
didn't work for somebody, so it need not be so cost prohibitive.
Tried a Selle Anatomica and, immediately comfy though it was, I felt like
I'd be out of tension bolt in three seasons.
Never sat on a Rivet or Berthoud or
Loathe as I am to compel anyone to sell a Riv, I just recently pared down
to one bike, and have thus far lived to tell the tale.
Me, I'd keep the Atlantis, if only because I think the range of versatility
dressing up and down is ever so slightly wider.

I've never been on a bike that didn't wander a bit on climbs, and I've
always just internalized that as I always wander a bit when riding up
hills. I guess once I get my technique dialed-in (I mean, I've only been
riding for 40 years or so), I'll start working on the bike...

I was surprised that a second iteration of the Bleriot didn't happen, at
least as a frameset.
Now that the next batch of Hillborne sizes will likely go heavy on 700C,
I'd be surprised if we don't see a similarly appointed frame at that
pricepoint with 650B across the range. The tires are
Monstercross! I guess basically a custom Atlantis with e'er so slightly
bigger tire clearance (50+). Degree or two more slope to the top tube, such
that a 8cm Nitto stem makes a perfect 7 when the saddle is just on level
with the middle of the hooks, but still only fistful of post. Horizontal
Boeshield and Turtle Wax are your friends. Give it a quick shakedown and
going over with a rag post-ride. Never leave it wet overnight. I've heard
of people using Teflon tape around the headset races and at the seat
post/seat tube juncture, but have never lived anywhere I'd see this in the

Never installed one, but by the looks of it, the wedge fits between the
underside of the fork crown and the rubber washer itself, thin side forward
so as to reduce the squished/not-very-compressed effect (to borrow from

I get cold as well, and find that I'm* better served with my light-ish,
nominally insulated Marmot wind jacket over a fleece zip-up or sweater
underneath, plus regular shirt, undershirt, etc.

I've wondered why more people don't use them, I think many don't even know
bar end brake levers exist, let alone how wonderful it is to not have to
negotiate mtb lever mounts where your hands can be !

Stated vs. actual drives me crazy, especially as my current ride is 26, so
not a lot to of decent all-rounders to choose from anyway.
Marathon 1.25? Hair under 32 actual. Marathon 1.50? Over by just enough to
not clear the brake bridge. Marathon 1.35? Don't exist.

Most pics I see of Albas have the stem level with or (way) above the saddle
height. I initially tried them like that, and was prepared to call the bars
a failure, as I can't comfortably ride for more than half an hour so bolt
upright.

The biggest factor in tire performance for me *is* me. If I'm feeling good
and well rested and it's a beautiful day, I'm fast on $5 worth of swap meet
rubber. If I'm grinding out the drudgery after my third flat in the rain,
no amount of supple and plush can ever feel fast enough.
