As if you need it, I’ll give a plus one for a Ram or Romulus. I have had my 
orange Ram for over 15 yrs and it has been on many club rides, centuries, 
short rides, gentle gravel rides, and nowhere rides. It is probably the 
best designed “everything but real dirt” roadish bike Grant’s ever 
designed, at least for me! And don’t be afraid of drop bars!

ScaD, I don’t know the recommendations but my PBH is 91 and it fit 
perfectly. I also had an older double top tube 58 Sam and it fit about the 
same.

Bill, your technical knowledge is way past mine - I'd always assumed the 
brake arms were the same and didn't notice any difference in feel. I will 
swap them front to back, thanks for the tip! And right now, I'd like to 
keep them with the complete bike. If the sale of just the frame frees them 
up, I'll get back with you.

I've decided to free up some garage space so my wonderful Appaloosa is up 
for sale. It's a silver 58cm, double top tube earlier model, but not sure 
about the year it was made (maybe two iterations ago?). As you can see from 
the pics, it is in very excellent condition with just some slight 
discoloration on the head tube from cable rub.

I'd be open to selling the whole bike (minus Brooks seat, bag, and front 
rack) for $1950, or the F/F/HS/BB for $1100 obo. Also anywhere in between 
priced accordingly.

shifters. It works flawlessly.

[RBW] Asheville Riv Rendesvous Recap

Just a quick recap from our fantastic Riv weekend in Asheville.

It was a blast. Almost 25 riders from Indiana to FL, including 10 local 
folks. Everyone was great and the bikes were, as you can imagine, almost 
all rivs, but we did let in a bridgestone :).  A Hunq, 5 Appaloosas, a 
couple of Atlanti, 3 or 4 gorgeous customs, the famous Betty Foy ridden 
72.000 miles by Pam (yes 72K!), a purple Rosco Platypus, a pumpkin 
platypus, a couple of Sams, and two Salukis, a Gus, and probably some more 
that I'm forgetting.

Some highlights:
The River Arts District greenway ride followed by beer and dinner at New 
Belgium Brewing, where our bikes took up and spilled over the entire bike 
rack system.

Our Bent Creek Gravel rides - three groups had a splendid day with not too 
hot temps, no rain, and perfect fire roads.

Two friendly bears who realized they were in the poster and better make an 
appearance.

Our bike parts garage sale, where everyone realized that we were all trying 
to get rid of lots of tires, stems, handlebars, bags, etc. that everyone 
else there already had. We all have a bike parts hoarding problem.

Beer and dinner at The Wedge brewery Saturday night.

The fabulous poster from Brian.

All of the fun people that came together with amazing bikes, great 
personalities, and brought all of their fun to the weekend.

Enthusiastic agreement that we should do it all again, maybe in during a 
fall or spring timeframe.

And thanks to a very gracious offer from Leah, she put our pics and videos 
together into one of her great videos - THANK YOU, LEAH!  A link to her

accurate - Some bears actually joined some of us during the weekend :)

better yet, why don’t you come join us? I know of an extra 55cm Cheviot

I just wanted to send a quick update about our Riv gathering July 7-9.  You 
can see our planned activities below.

Right now we’ve got 20 folks that have indicated that they are planning to 
attend, and 6 that are maybe’s. Here’s the “yes” list I’ve got:

Robert, Steve, and Ellen!  They are working on route details (map and GPS), 
food and drink venues, a pavilion for the swap meet, and possibly (fingers 
crossed) some ride swag (hat and/or a bandana).

It should be a really fun weekend and we are looking forward to meeting 
everyone, riding, and geeking out on all things Riv!

the river (for those that don’t want to pay for Arboretum parking)

   Afternoon short ride in conjunction with a swap meet, possibly

   Dinner somewhere local (same possible options as for Friday)

Hi Laing,
Bent Creek fire roads are gravel, but not too rough. Greenway is almost all 
paved except for a short gravel portion that we may or may not do. 
Neighborhood ride is all paved. Your custom with 650b x 48 would be perfect 
(and I'd like to see it!).

Hi Everyone,

We had a fun meeting yesterday with our local Riv riders and sketched out a 
few more details about the upcoming Rivendell (unofficial) Meet up this 
July. Here's what we've got so far:

*Schedule for July 7-9:*

*July 7* - Afternoon ride on Greenway followed by dinner/beer at one of the 
local places (All Souls, New Belgium, White Duck Taco, Smokey Park, etc). 

*July 8* - Morning ride at Bent Creek with two options - an easier, shorter 
one and a longer one that ideally could be done in a figure 8 so everyone 
stays together for the first, easier part. Parking either at the Arboretum 
or by the river (for those that don’t want to pay for Arboretum parking)

   Afternoon short ride in conjunction with a swap meet, possibly 
at Carrier Park under one of their pavilions (or another similar location 
near the greenway). 

   Dinner somewhere local (same possible options as for Friday)

Yes, July 7-9 is the weekend we are aiming for. Some of the asheville folks 
will be getting together next week to nail down some more details which 
we’ll post here. We’d talked about an easy gravel ride, a harder gravel 
option, a greenway ride, a quiet neighborhood ride, and lots of 
opportunities for craft beer stops and socializing. You’d also mentioned a 
possible “swap meet” and I think that is a great idea. Keep your eyes

We've not solidified ANY details yet, but I'd guess about 50/50 road/gravel 
fire roads. There are also lots of single track options that we could map 
out if anyone is interested in that. We will probably also map out shorter 
and longer options for each day.

have said they'd be able to make the weekend of July 7-9 work for them, so

would like to join us please let me know! Also happy to answer any

[RBW] WTB - Riv for a 69cm seat height

Hi all, I’ve got a friend looking to get a Rivendell. She has a 69cm seat 
height and wants to use it on fire roads, etc. for day rides and light 
touring. No technical single track, etc. Does anyone have a gently used Riv 
that they are looking to re-home? Appaloosa, Cheviot, Sam, Homer, Atlantis, 
etc. are all possibilities. Located in Asheville, NC.

We've had five folks fill out the doodle scheduling poll (thanks Steve, 
Jason, Ky, and Chasen) to try to find a late spring date for a potential 
Asheville gathering and the May 12, 13, 14 weekend is best for those who 
responded. Does that date work with others who didn't respond? Or should I 
throw out some summer and/or early fall dates?

Hi Everyone, at the risk of being presumptuous I went ahead and created 
this Doodle scheduling poll to see what (if any) weekend dates in May/June 
would work best for a Riv group meetup in Asheville.  Just click on the 
link and it will guide you to a calendar that will allow you to select the 
dates you are (and are not) available for a weekend meetup. After about a 
week, I can post the results and we can either take the planning further

Steve - Yes, Bent Creek and the River Arts sounds good. We could also add 
another ride the following day on quiet roads (they do exist!) just north 
of downtown, up Sunset to Town Mt, around Montford, etc. that could follow 
the Asheville bike routes.

as Asheville gets mobbed then. But if we can find a suitable date I’d be 
happy to help with some organizing of the gathering. Seems like the biggest 
hurdle is getting a date nailed down. Any summer date would probably work 
for me, but I’d suggest late May/early June if we wanted to avoid July 4.

campground at Bent Creek - although it fills up pretty quickly in the

[RBW] Re: Riv Riders in Western NC

The Wilson Creek area is beautiful - but is pretty remote and about 1.5 hrs 
from Asheville. Closer to Asheville there are some great fire roads and 
mellow singe track at Bent Creek Experimental Forest that is connected to 
the NC Arboretum. I ride there all the time and it is just about perfect 
for a riv. It's also only about 15 min from downtown Asheville.   There's 
also a growing urban bike trail that includes roads, bike paths, and 
breweries lacing through town that is a fun way to get to know the town 
(and the beer). And, a new bike store named "Gravelo" just opened in town 
and although they don't sell rivs, they are very familiar with them and 
always ooh and aah appropriately when me and my other riv pals go in there. 
They are really a great group!  That's my. $.02!

I’m in asheville and know about 5 other riv riders here. We spend lots of 
time on the Bent Creek trails/fire roads.

I've got a 2015 grey/kidney bean 58 hunq that I bought new and I'm sure 
that one was built in Taiwan. I remember cause I was talking to Grant when 
I ordered it and he assured me the quality was equal to the Toyo-built 
bikes. It's still a great bike - wherever it came from!

They are kind of heavy but work fine for occasional riding around. I've got

I gotta do that ride too. Mike, I lived in Cocoa Beach back then and my dad 
ran the Starlite Motel where the Mercury astronauts stayed. He got to be 
good friends with them and they would come to the house showing off their

[RBW] Green Rambouillet, 56cm, new lower price

Hi all,

I am posting this for a friend who has been unable to ride for a number of 
years and his Ram has been sitting unused in his garage.  It is "almost" in 
almost pristine condition with very few miles. There are just a couple of 
scratches on the top tube from a garage tip over. I've got some touch up 
paint for those.  Everything is in fantastic condition and the bike is 
awesome. I've got an original orange Ram and I love these bikes...

He is now asking $1300.

Here are the details:

Rambouillet frame, 56 (cm center to top)
Noodle bars 44cm
Technomic stem - 11cm
Shimano levers and mid reach brakes
Shimano 9spd bar ends
Sugino crank 48/36/26, 170mm crank arms
Nitto seat post
Brooks Champion B17
Shimano Xt rear derailler
Shimano 105 front derailler
Shimano 105 hubs/Mavic Open Pro rims 32 spokes
28mm Ruffy Tuffy tires (nearly new)

that allows you to carry a bike with fenders which I just tried out this

Hi Jeremy,

I've got a 58 Hunq and my wife has the 55 Appaloosa. I started this thread 
to see if anyone has experience with a larger Appaloosa because I was so 
surprised when I rode her App for about an hour how much livelier and 
supple it felt compared to my Hunq (one of the first generation grey/maroon 
ones). I thought maybe because it was a smaller frame?  But others that 
have responded seem to have felt the same thing. My Hunq is noticeably 
heavier and just FEELS heavier riding it compared to my wife's Appaloosa. I 
don't know about the tubes, but it sure seems that the Appaloosa either has 
lighter tubes or the longer chain stays contribute to the significantly 
different feel. A clydesdale vs a gazelle difference almost.  Not good vs 
bad, just different.

[RBW] WTB: 58 or 60cm Appaloosa - F/F/HS

would ideally be looking for one of the newer 60cm Appaloosa frames but

Ryan, thanks for the Hunq brochure - I'd not see that before.And I do LOVE 
the head badge!  I agree that the App feels a bit lighter and more roadish, 
while the Hunq feels just rock solid. I'm not sure what MUP riding is :) 
but I'm definitely not doing loaded touring on trails any time soon.  And 
yes, another bike is always the answer!

Chris, the Hunq feels much more stout to me than the App.

Andrew, my PBH is 91 and I'm pretty sure a 62 Hunq would be too tall, even 
tho I've got my seat set with lots of post showing. I didn't realize that 
the 62 App had more clearance. I'm using Albastache bars with a dirt drop 
stem on the Hunq and the reach is great. How do you think that would that 
work on your App? I'd be interested to see a pic of your bike so I can see 
where your seat is set. What is your PBH?

[RBW] Hunqapillar vs Appaloosa ride quality?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for opinions about the ride of a 58 Hunq vs a 58 Appaloosa. I 
know that is pretty specific, but here's why. I just finished building up a 
55 Appaloosa for my wife and we were on a ride this weekend where we traded 
bikes. Both of us remarked that the Appa felt much more lively, smoother, 
and lighter than the Hunq. Seeing how her bike has the awesome 55mm Compass 
EL tires, I traded wheels to see if that would account for the difference, 
but it really didn't make much difference.

So before I start thinking about replacing my beloved grey/kidney bean 
Hunq with an Appaloosa I thought I'd reach out and see if anyone else out 
in Riv land has had experience with both, ideally in my 58 size. Am I just 
imagining the difference??

[RBW] Re: WTB English Rain coat

I just received my DV Greenspot a couple of months ago and it is heavier 
than my previous rain jacket. I'd probably not use it in warm weather but 
it is great for anything cool/cold. It is bulkier too so it's not the kind 
of thing I'd just throw in my bag if it is not supposed to rain.  FWIW, I 
ordered a medium and am 6'/150#. It fits great with lots of room for 
layering, but I did have the sleeves made longer than the stock size and 
they are perfect.  The construction and quality overall is impeccable.

[RBW] FS: 2 Brooks Cambium 17s and a Nitto large front rack

I have two cambium 17s that just didn't work for me. One is a nearly new 
(slate top and bottom) and the other is a little older and slightly faded 
on top (slate top and tan bottom). Asking $80 shipped for the newer one and 
$65 shipped for the tan bottom one.

I've also got a nearly new Nitto big front rack that has two attachment 
pieces that fit fine on my Hunq. Asking $145 shipped. I bought this from a 
list member a while ago and never used it.

+++1 for the 1 UP.  I've had one for about a year and it's the best rack 
I've ever had. Rock solid with zero sway, and it only touches the wheels 
and can be configured for 1 - 4 bikes, with an add-on carrier for each one. 
That way the pieces can be added separately and individually don't weigh 
much (maybe 20# each). Kind of pricy but well worth it!
