Armand is not getting me to sign up for the triple scoop. Even the single
scoop option sounds brutal enough to me, with 4100 ft elevation gain over
27 miles, but Tony, I'll suffer through it with you if you want to try the
single scoop!

Re: [RBW] Re: Los Angeles Riv Ride

2024-02-14 Thread Brian Cunningham
Funny you should mention Chuck's ride, Ted. I believe I met you a couple
years ago when you happened upon the ride and I was on my (now former, a
little too French fit) blue Rambouillet. The Sierra Madre loop I have
developed borrows somewhat from that ride but subtracts some turn and the
climb into Sierra Madre that I favor is longer and more gradual.

Congrats, Tony!

I'm just a few miles away in Glendale and have an orange Roadini from a
previous batch. Know a fellow named Dean in Eagle Rock who has one from the
new gold run, and it does look great. I'd have a hard time choosing between
that and the green as well. Both are really nice shades.

Feel free to email me if you'd like to do a little Riv meetup for folks in
the NELA area...

Cheers,

[RBW] Re: SF RB-1 looking very nice

2023-12-20 Thread Brian Cunningham
Hey Brent,

I know that we've already gotten to chat about how much I enjoy my Roadini.
I have owned an RB-1 previously, and would argue that if you could only own
of those two bikes, the Roadini is a clear winner from the standpoint of
utility. I've been commuting on it and taking it on mixed surface rides.
Even in terms of weight, it's going to be a fairly negligible difference
depending on how you build it up. I don't imagine it's easier to squeeze
much beyond a 28mm tire on the RB-1 so it's not going to be as comfortable
on rougher streets or fire roads. The shorter chainstays of the RB-1 are
probably going to make it a little bit faster, but I doubt you'd be as
happy on that bike on other than nicely paved roads. I also think that
there's a little bit of market inflation when it comes to the top-model
Bridgestones. If you want a zippy lightweight pure road bike of that era,
you can probably find equally good ones that don't have the Bridgestone
name attached. And if you're a strong rider, you can be nearly as fast on
the Roadini with some plush wider tires with lightweight casing.

That seller of the Bridgestone seems to specialize in very nice bikes with
attractive photos and appears unconcerned with letting the market decide
the value. He's had a Davidson Discovery up for eons with a caveat that
he's "not desperate to sell" it and it shows. The price hasn't moved and
nor has the bike. When I sold my RB-1, supposedly at the peak of bike
scarcity in the early days of the pandemic, I still only asked $400 thru my
local CL. I got my price within a day or two, no haggling. I'll concede
that mine wasn't in nearly as nice condition, but still.

my $0.02,

Brian

Oops! An error on my part. We have a 2.5cm difference in saddle height, not
2.5 inches. So a 54 should still give you four inches of seatpost.

[RBW] Re: ISO: Roadini 54 Sergio Green

2023-12-12 Thread Brian Cunningham
Doug,

Will is probably leading you in the right direction. Some data points that
might help you from my 54 Roadini. Shod with 700X42s, the standover height
is 32". I'm 6'0" with a 85 PBH/74cm saddle height. My saddle height gives
me 5 inches of seatpost visible, so you'd be down to 2.5".

Interestingly, I just checked the geometry chart and there's only 1.3cm of
difference in effective top tube between the 50 (55.2cm) and the 54
(56.5cm). I'm no bike fit expert (I figure if nothing's hurting all is
good!) but I'd figure the difference of a single cm is just a stem choice
away.

As Will has alluded to in the emails, it's easy to get the bars comfortably
high (though I actually ride this one with the bars a smidge below saddle)
without having to size up.

I'm loving my Roadini and hope you love your soon-to-be-Roadini.

Cheers,

Re: [RBW] ISO Roadini...or?

2023-07-20 Thread Brian Cunningham
Since I now own both a Sam and a Roadini (as of last month), the latter is
noticeably zippier. The difference I feel in going from a stop to
accelerating to a normal cruising speed is palpable. The Roadini just gets
there faster and climbs more nimbly. My feelings seem to be supported by
data. Now we’re not talking crazy differences in speed, but my rather flat
commute is somewhere around 14mph on the Sam and exceeds 15mph on the
Roadini. (Though nobody rides a riv to break speed records, I like mapping
my rides to keep track of mileage, and as a side benefit, I get to see the
speeds, too.)

The Sam has a nitto rack/Wald 137/sugarloaf, while the Roadini has just a
Fab’s Abs handlebar bag and a tiny Acorn bag in the rear for
tools/tubes/patch kit.

At this point I see myself leaning on the Roadini except in cases where I
need to carry more stuff. Tire clearance is about the same between my 2015
side pull Sam and ‘22 Roadini. The Sam of course has braze-ons that the
Roadini doesn’t.

Hope this helps,

Brian

I would be very surprised. I’ve owned both, but probably 20 years apart.
But tall head tubes, long chainstays, and heavy tubing all add up quickly.

Tim,

I’ve got the same era Sam but with the tektro r559 brakes. Tire clearance
is sufficient for those 44s, but when I’ve run them I haven’t been able to
get the tires to pass through the brake calipers fully inflated, so I’d
have to finish inflating after getting the tires in place. Not sure how
those brakes compare with Paul Racers in terms of the size of the opening.

[RBW] Re: FS: 60cm Blue Rambouillet Complete - $1250

2023-06-14 Thread Brian Cunningham
Hello!

I can see the Rambouillet doesn't possess the allure of the rarer, coveted
Hunqapillar! However, I know there's enough aficionados of this bike that I
should be able to unload the complete bike if the price is right. Maybe
$1250 was a bit much after all.

If nobody local is interested in the complete bike, I intend to bring it to
a local shop in Pasadena to consign. They take a substantial percentage but
do all the work. I'm guessing that they'd price it in such a way that I'd
net about $1000, so in the spirit of trying to pass on what I think to be a
bargain to a group that has brought me friendship, knowledge and good
deals, is there anyone in SoCal who's interested in this bike for an even
$1k? My desire to maintain n+0 in light of the incoming Roadini outweighs
my desire to hold out for an imagined price I think I deserve.

Let me know ASAP if this sweetens the deal for anyone!

Thanks,

Brian

Re: [RBW] Los Angeles Riv Ride

2023-04-24 Thread Brian Cunningham
Hi Houston -

If my schedule allows, I’m in, likely on my Sam Hillborne. Could probably
coax an Atlantis-owner friend to join, too. He’s in Glassell Park; I’m in
Glendale.

Paging Joe Mullins, who is also on this list and local, but is a new dad
and not sure how much free time he’s got.

Ben Adrian of Echo Park had organized a min Riv-heavy ride in NELA/DTLA a
few months back. He has since unloaded his one Riv but built up a Rivish
Soma that I’ve yet to see. And perhaps he would join, too.

Thanks for proposing this!

Hi socal Riv riders,

I've been lurking in the RBW Owners Bunch for a little while and I'm
inspired by all of the regional rides being organized. Would anyone be
interested in doing a LA Riv ride/meetup at some point in May? I'd love to
ride with y'all, make some new friends, and ogle at your bikes!

Depending on where most folks are located, I think it could be cool to do
the Will Rogers inspiration loop in the Western Santa Monica's or a
Griffith Park/Hollywood Sign moment. Regardless, it'd be a chill pace with
a cafe stop or two thrown in.

I'd love to hear from you, let me know your thoughts!
