[RBW] Re: 5 Boro Bike Tour (was NYC Riv Ride?)

2024-04-12 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
Apparently, I replied to Pam as "author only" by accident, which, means my
high praise and admiration for her *absolutely bonkers HERO feat* of flying
to LGA and unboxing on the spot to tour NYC by bike didn't make it to the
larger group here - *but it should have* (!)

Amazing, Pam... just amazing!

Registration opened this week, and I signed up.
I've got my lodging and flight booked as well.

This will be my first trip to NYC since I was a kid, 50 years ago. I
won't be bringing my Riv (Bringing the Ritchey Breakaway), but I'll be
there for a week, staying in midtown not far from ride start.
I'd love to meet up with others while I'm there, get recommendations on
where to ride, cheap food, coffee, bike shops, etc.

Anyone else here doing the ride?

[RBW] Re: Best mitten design for very cold weather

2023-09-30 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
I"m a Lobster Mitt man, myself. I commute through the winters in NYC and
Pearl Izumi has been the go-to. I think I'm on my third pair in around 25
years or so. They clean up well in the washer, hang dry - never the dryer
(ask me how I know). The upper cuff isn't too annoying with various
jackets, etc. I switch over to them when the temps drop to the low 30's.
They aren't perfect below say, 10 degrees - but they're still pretty good -
and for sure, I try to keep my trips short when it's below 10 degrees
anyway.

They've evolved over the years - I'm about to try out a new pair this
winter. I purchased them from Tri-Sports last Spring when they were on sale
at $42.99. It looks like they're back up to full retail price again but
maybe search around for a better price if you're interested.

I had the same thing happen to that exact model after a couple of years of

[RBW] Re: Buzzy hubs, hipster or window rattling?

2022-02-10 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
Joe - I have that same hub (or a T-11 or something) but yeah, it turned me
off to loud hubs for good:

1. For the small percentage of riding that I get to do in the woods I found
it really annoying, like, "no talking in the library" annoying!
2. When I had my bike on the stand doing tune ups or whatever the thing
would be so loud I couldn't hear myself think!

Honestly, it even bugged me in NYC where I ride daily .. and that's really
saying something. Now it hangs in the garage collecting dust ...

How's that for old man grouchy?

Great story ... the first thing that came to mind for me was: if you can
ride it 30 or 40 you can ride it 70!

Ideally I'd do some kind of out-and-back into the wind in the AM and

Yes, Rivs are fine bikes. I'd probably use my Road with drop bars...my

But enough about me...congratulations to all of you!

Nice to meet you, Dave - I've been hanging around here for years but

I know that excitement - and I know the sleeplessness - or restless sleep
it produces. The all-night-in-your-head conversations regarding that one
precious object. It's an odd sensation to balance when we all know the ups
and downs of contemporary life. The constant dance of need to balance the
bigger things ... the "really" important stuff: family, health, etc. And
yes, sometimes I do feel guilt over the covet ... but oh man (!) what it
does for the soul to search and find (!) I truly hope everyone can
experience that one small personal inner joy over something, sometime in
their lives that Leah just perfectly encapsulated.

That's a beautiful gesture, Daniel. Attached a link to a free shipping
label. If you're not in a rush, use it and send us your rolls. Just add a
note to me and we'll process them for free. D/M me and we'll sort out a
significant discount for full roll scanning and return shipping as well
- and in the spirit of Daniel's gesture, this goes for everyone on the list
whether he sent you the film or not.

We're doing our best here to preserve our chemistry with the goal to
ultimately bring all of our employees back & reopen when we're allowed. We
did a "closed door" processing run yesterday and our customers delivered
triple what we expected ... all with no customer service, no cash
transactions, pick-up outside the door, etc (!) There was a lot of love
there and we're extremely grateful.

Stay strong (and sane) everyone !!!

Re: [RBW] Chain rubbing rear tire on Clem.

2020-02-25 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
I guess it depends on how you use your bike and how chill a human you are.
Me, I tend to be less chill about things like that. It shouldn't happen on
a bike that's supposedly spec'd for tires that big (or quite frankly, any
properly designed bike). If it's just a matter of spacers not being
installed on the cassette then that's an easy fix. I wouldn't be opposed to
1mm to 1.5mm spacers on a BB shell either .. or flat out changing the BB
spindle length. But otherwise no. I could not stand for chain rub on a tire
... even in a lightly used gear.

[RBW] Re: FS: Riv Waterford All Rounder, '97-ish

2019-11-05 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hey Joe - I sent you a P/M but it could have gotten lost in the ether ...

Two quick questions:

1. What's the widest tire that thing will run and/or what's the width on
the knobbies you're showing in the pics?
2. What's the stand over height?

many thanks / jsk

[RBW] Re: Cheviot limits

2019-11-04 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'm 99.9% sure you can't fit 47's and fenders on a Chev ... so that leaves
you in the 42 / 1.75 tire with fenders category. We're running Hetres and
V/O Snakeskin fenders (and those are technically only 50 but it's working)
on a 55. I could probably scare up a few pics of the fit if you're
interested

Re: [RBW] Re: A Lesson: When buying a vehicle that will transport a Clem, measure twice and buy once.

2019-10-31 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
Good point on the height. The thought of needing step ladder and an
articulated rear rack for bikes makes me crazy.

I checked with VW, btw. The Passat has already been discontinued. I should
also note that both Audi and BMW still offer their full size wagons to the
European markets. Heck, even Mercedes Benz offers *three* engine packages
to the Canadian market for their E450 wagon.

We're nutty here in the USA.

[RBW] Re: A Lesson: When buying a vehicle that will transport a Clem, measure twice and buy once.

2019-10-31 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
Personally, I LOVE station wagons and I think, cool is what you make
it. We've been in various V-Series Volvo wagons for the past 22 years. The
only bike that doesn't slide in whole into the back with the rear seats
folded down is my wife's ridiculously long Cheviot. For that land yacht, I
have to use the roof rack.

It's new car time in our house though ... the current (2007) wagon is
getting the boot and currently there's bit of a debate as to whether we're
going to switch brands before we're both rolling around in wheelchairs! I
don't see a minivan in our future, though (my ego might be too fragile for
that) but I also couldn't be less enthused when looking at the current crop
of "crossover" SUV's. Most, as noted here already aren't any bigger than
our wagons ... most, in fact, are smaller! Unfortunately, true full size
wagons are few and far between here in the USA these days.

I also haven't had a car without a roof rack in over 25 years now.
Practically everything ends up on top at some point: paddle boards,
sailboats, skis, bikes, furniture, and of course, christmas trees. I find
it funny that most car salesmen aren't prepared for our questions about
what will fit and where ... it seems like a lot of folks buy those big ol'
SUV's and drive 'em around full of air

Yep Mark -- perfectly stated and well understood. And yet, we fawn all over

Re: [RBW] First Rivendell — sizing question

2019-06-05 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
You'd have to work pretty damn hard to get either of those three models
anywhere near 18lbs and fitted for practical commuting. I'd wager it's
impossible, actually .. and anyway, that's not the Riv ethos. The Sam or
Homer with fenders, at least one rack and a basket and a full compliment of
mid to upper tier parts: drive train, cockpit, rim, hubs, tires, etc. is at
best going to run 25 lbs (+) minimum. Nothing wrong with that ... but by
minimum I mean closer to 28 to 30 in real world weight.

[RBW] Re: New Wavie Bar Photos

2018-11-28 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
I like the "idea" of this bar and have been toying with pulling the trigger
on a MAP/Ahearne. I did just set up a Billie to replace a Choco Norm on my
daily ride ... but again, I keep thinking about those MAP's. I've tried
other bars with that shape but haven't been pleased as they're usually too
shallow in the return. I do like the return (or sweep) angles of Alba's,
Choco's and the new Billie even though I find myself riding towards the
front of those bars the majority of the time (it's really the super slow
times and weird tight NYC traffic traversing where the upright full sweep
does come in handy for me).

So that said, using the incredibly helpful whatbars.com I've come to think
that the new Velo Orange Curvy One bar looks possibly like an even a better
fit for me than the MAP. And since RIV is working closely with whatbars.com
now I suspect that they'll forward a drawing of the Wavie to them soon
enough to make a comparison.

My main hesitation with the V/O bar is that 31.8 clamp! I mean, really ...
well, that and the fact that all of these bars at 610 to 660 are getting
pretty darn wide for a city boy -- and I used to think Alba's were wide for
gawds sake.

I run an I-XQ and Son Deluxe Wide Body on my daily ride here in NYC.
Considering how many riders use blinking lights in my town the second or

And I say spin up because it never flickers at normal rolling speed, which,
often isn't all that fast as I thread my way through traffic and bike path
congestion, etc it flickers a little at walking speed too, but that's
not an issue for me either.

[RBW] Re: New SimWorks rack

2018-10-10 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
I like that Crust Rack exactly because it doesn't have a diving board (and
I like the platform size for the basket, too). The Crust works off a pretty
smart "truss" or bracket that attaches to the center hole on a fork crown.
That bracket is quite beefy and spreads the load outward similar to a fork
with attachment points on top of the crown on either side of the head tube.
I was able to run the bracket behind a set of Mafac Raids, even. It's a
solid rack but not overly heavy -- the stainless steel struts are heavy
gauge hollow tubing with nicely welded attachment points -- and the
hardware is top notch. The platform has plenty of attachment points as well
for lights and/or lowrider racks. And the 4 struts ought to make anyone
paranoid about rack failure feel safe, too. I'm not totally crazy about the
industrial / "erector set" aesthetic overall but it works with the build
style of the particular bike I have it on now.

[RBW] Re: OT: Kids' bikes. Islabikes is closing.

2018-10-03 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
We went with a Fairdale Weekender Archer when my son hit 5' 1" or so -- the
Adult small size was designed around 27.5 (650b) wheels and with it's
sloping top tube was a perfect "grow into" size. We never did install racks
or fenders but there were plenty of attachment points on the fork and seat
stays as well as both drop outs. Of course, he grew 4" that year and
another 3" the next and already it's too small(ish). He's also going on 14
and pretty much only riding in the summer anymore ... sigh. I'm betting I
can switch out the stem and maybe do a bar swap of some sort and he'll eek
out another summer on it but then he'll likely have outgrown my bikes
as well since he's already at least 1/2" taller than me!

[RBW] Re: Help with fenders

2018-10-01 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
Shoji's links are spot on -- I'd say grab a coffee (or a beer) and read
through them. Getting your hands on the JP Weigel / BQ article would be
very helpful as well.

My 2 cents: I'd suggest a sharp awl as opposed to drilling. Alu fenders are
super soft and a small round file will remove the burr from the awl easily
enough.

[RBW] Re: Film Processing

2018-10-01 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
I run a lab in NYC:

LTI-Lightside (www.lti-lightside.com)

We run a lot of C-41 and B+W film, daily -- we no longer handle E-6,
though. I've looked through the Darkroom.com site and give them a thumbs up
for going after the mail-in market. I think the Riv guys use them and I'm
guessing they do a good job -- and their prices are good, too. I'm not
normally in the habit of praising my competitors (but we're really not in
the same market) -- and I haven't used their services so can't actually say
one way or the other but my industry savvy hunch is that they're probably a
safe-bet and unless you're seeing results that you don't like and can
attribute it to them. Again, I'd guess that they're probably one of the
better film processing options out there at this time.

That said -- being a long time reader of this list (and film shooting bike
nerd)) and knowing that many of you are into photography it's always nagged
at the back of my mind that I wish I could offer you all services somehow.
I'd be happy to create discount codes for RGB Owners Bunch readers any time
(though we don't have those fancy pre-paid mailers like the darkroom.com).
Please feel free to take a look through our site and notice that all our
prices are published online, we offer multiple upload to print options and
have a near ten year deep project archive link detailing our customers work
in both fine-art and commercial & advertising categories ...

We also have an instagram account (@lti-lightside) and count none other
than UltraRomance himself as our sole "influencer" ... ha.

Feel free to reach out to me personally if you're interested in anything --
and like I said, I'd be happy to offer up some discounts for like-minded
bikers

Hey Jim -- I don't know what RD came with the Clem but I can't imagine why
you couldn't make it work for 9 speed just by working the limit screw
(and/or B-Screw depending on how wide of a range you wanted). I'm an
Index-Only guy myself so depending on budget I'd look to Shimano 9 for the
shifter and any number of inexpensive cassette options to clear that part
of the problem up.

[RBW] Re: Thanks Grant

2018-06-20 Thread jeffrey kane
Matt's reply to the OP wasn't something we haven't seen here before - (*Please
do not introduce political non “bike” talk on the board)* - I mean,
perhaps it could have been more eloquently expressed ... but if I had to
guess, it's a sentiment that has been generally agreed with across the
group.

Why not let this one go before Jim Edgar has to jump in and remind us all
that we'd be better off letting it go?

[RBW] Re: Tektro R559 vs. Dia-Compe 750 centerpulls.

I've used both on the same bike before. Both worked well enough not to be
significantly distinguishable in terms of performance. Both are quite easy

settled on CP's as my go to on bikes that offer the clearance.

[RBW] WTB: Riv MUSA Rain Pants / size small (the orange ones)

2018-01-23 Thread jeffrey kane
HI all,

I'm looking for a pair of the old Riv MUSA Rain Pants / size small (the
orange ones) ... mine haven't really been good for rain for years now but I
love them as a wind and filth barrier for winter commuting. That said, I've
nearly worn them to tatters and are wondering is anyone has an old pair
sitting around not getting any use.

Re: [RBW] Lightest 650b wheelset that can take a 42mm tire?

2018-01-17 Thread jeffrey kane
Any decent wheel can hop a curb or take an urban pothole here or there,
really (even lightweight 700c racing wheels). However, I suppose that
ham-fisted curb BASHING (if that's what you're referring to) would be
something else altogether, I guess.

Ever the gentleman, K/P replied quickly and gave his approval to repost his
answers here:

I asked:

*Am particularly curious about the hubs, are they branded Pacenti? Or if not,
who makes them (they're quite good looking!)? Great call on the 28H. Lastly,
how would you rate the noise level of the rear hub on a scale running from
Shimano quiet to Industry 9 deafening with say, BiTex, White Ind. and Chris
King in between?*

He replied:

Jeffrey,

Thank you for your interest in our Brevet wheel sets, they really are
fantastic, (imo).

The hubs are branded Pacenti, and are heavily inspired by high flange
Campagnolo Record hubs, for a very "classic" look.

The hubs are really close to White Industries or BiTex; certainly not as
quite as Shimano, but nowhere near as loud as I9 or Hope.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Btw, the wheels
do come with rim strips, but not QR skewers, those are sold separately.

Best regards,

 Kirk A. Pacenti

so ... there you go.

[RBW] Re: My gift to the bunch

2017-12-20 Thread jeffrey kane
Nice job, Marty -- your work file work is excellent and should print
beautifully!

I run a photo lab in NYC with a pretty cost-effective online print ordering
platform:

https://www.lti-lightside.com/order-custom-prints

So here's my gift to the bunch: I can't do "free" (I do have partners and a
staggering payroll here) but the online ordering prices are the lowest we
offer and here's a discount code you can use for ordering prints from
Marty's file that will save an additional 25%:

riv_badge

I'll leave it "live" through the end of January -- D/M me if you have any
questions.

Happy Holidays to all ...

I don't know what they're sending as "stock" on the Clem these days but the
plastic/nylon VP 535 that they used to spec is pretty hard to beat --
unless one has something against plastic/nylon bodies. I'd certainly give
them a spin (no pun intended) before shelling out for something else.

[RBW] Re: WTB (iBob cross post) 30 x 46 square taper (170 approx) crank, silver

2017-11-25 Thread jeffrey kane
Hey Dan, the rims are the old Velocity Twin Hollow that Riv used to see as
their "budget" wheel set. There's lots of width with the Bleriot though
(front & back), in fact, the crimped chain stay work is really nice for
tires of this size on this frame. The WTB's with tubes are coming in around
46 or 47mm -- same as Switchback Hills for me on other rims of similar
width. I have a new and unmounted pair of Terrine Elwoods to try soon ...
they look like a terrific mixed use tire as well.

(+) 1 on bicyclebolts.com -- their stainless steel bolt quality is quite
good. You don't have to buy the Tamper Proof caps (they have regular hex
head types as well) -- I use the Tamper Proof caps because I lock my bike

[RBW] Re: 3-Speed MTBing Resources?

2017-11-06 Thread jeffrey kane
I think you're getting onto something there -- 3 speed MTN bikes could be
the new single speed MTN bikes. Now, which company would take that on? A
super durable, lightweight 3sp. IG hub and stealthy shifter (no doubt
incorporating some sort of dropper seat post button as well). I vote for
Sram to do it -- and wait for it ... *wirelessly* as well (!) (Cue the
groans and gasps from the peanut gallery).

Cool idea though.

[RBW] Cross Post: looking for flat, thin and serviceable nylon pedals

2017-11-04 Thread jeffrey kane
I posted this to the iBob list as well so my apologies for the redundancy:

I'm in search of a nylon or plastic type body -- I don't care for
replaceable steel pins. I really like the nylon-like models: they don't
scratch stuff that they come in contact with and are usually pretty light.
Inexpensive is nice but not a barrier to purchase. I wore through a pair of
cheap VP's in a year already (the bearings feel like a pepper grinder) and
can't be replaced. I prefer the thin bodies (2cm or under) over the old
school 3cm BMX types. I like allen key install over traditional pedal
wrench fittings ... and yes, I'd like to rebuild them after riding through
east-coast salt infused winters, whether sealed bearing or loose ball.

Any ideas for candidates that fit the bill?

Damn John,

Very sorry to hear that -- and glad to hear you're not hurt. I frequent
paths along both sides the Hudson, often as early as 6:00 - 6:30am. No

I'd guess if your shop thinks your frame warrants a trip to Belinky they're

[RBW] Re: 10x200 update. An eleventh bike, and blast(s) from the past

2017-09-19 Thread jeffrey kane
Coincidentally, the hardly too-serious (more hilarious) TeamDreamCyclinTeam
launches a new selection of apparel, both cycling performance specific and
casual today (9/19 at 12:00pm PST). Ordering is easy though the website but
they have a large online / social media following and things do sell out
pretty quickly. The quality of the LA made cycling goods is terrific.

Bill calls it right in that they are "good hard-working positive bunch of
cyclists, putting a ton of effort and energy into building a genuine
community around themselves in that South Pasadena area". To be sure, these
aren't the reviled, tempo-driven roadies often pilloried here -- in fact,
this group seems to spend as much time under-biking their way through and
over the Los Angeles National Forest and local Verdugo Mtn. unpaved roads
as they do on the road. They're also connected to Silver Lake's Golden
Saddle Cyclery, which, has a great Instagram feed of 'visiting" bikes --
many that would be appreciated here. Any "hating" in their direction would
be misinformed (in my opinion, anyway).

Well, this morning was the kick off of the NYC Velo Spring Adventure Series
--- here's their blurb describing the first leg:

Bear Mountain ATTACK – Sunday 4/23 @ 8:00AM at Antoinnete’s Patisserie
. 75 miles of beautiful
riding in upstate New York to Bear Mountain, presented in conjunction with
our sister-shop, Hastings Velo. Call 914-478-2453 <(914)%20478-2453> for
more information.

And also this morning was the Bike Snob GranFonDon't:
(http://bikesnobnyc.blogspot.com) which, was slated to be and easy 70/30
pavement/dirt ride taking in the Old Croton Aqueduct

And yeah, I'm typing and not riding either ... and want to kill myself

[RBW] Re: 3M helicopter tape

2017-04-19 Thread jeffrey kane
I tried it for the front derailleur clamp once -- didn't work for me. The
cable pulling action caused the clamp to slip - whether that was on the
clamp / tape interface or the adhesive / frame interface (or both) I'm not
totally sure but either way, it was a no go. I'd never considered cloth HB
tape idea for that, though (but I'd probably not like looking at it).

The 3M Heli tape is great stuff for bikes -- I cut little pieces to wrap
around my bottom bracket shells to keep the occasional chain drop form
scratching them -- and I double it in patches around where maybe chain suck
will happen. I use it as a chain slap protector, etc ...

[RBW] Re: WTB: Riv cheapy pedals

2017-02-02 Thread jeffrey kane
Joe, if you don't find them locally -- you can rest assured that they do
exist online and are easily obtainable. I just picked up a pair of VP-535's
on EBay for around $11.99. They're cheap (and cheap feeling) -- like,
probably not serviceable cheap feeling -- but whatever, they're $12.99 and
nylon and that's what I needed so my VP Gripsters would stop scratching the
holy hell out of my other bikes when piled together in our bike parting
area. The 535's are actually sport a lightly bigger platform and while I
haven't tried them when wet, they feel great when riding in dry conditions.

[RBW] Re: F.S. 55cm Bleriot frame set

2017-01-26 Thread jeffrey kane
It's a great bike at a great price.
PBH 81.3 will fit fine (and man, that's such a specific measurement that I
don't even want to think about how you got it) .
It fits 42's (Hetres and/or Baby Shoe Pass tires) AND Berthoud S/S fenders.
And will fit either Tektro long reach calipers or Dia Compe CP's with the
fenders (with a little massaging)
It's every bit a Saluki except for not quite as buttery a fork (or at least
as buttery as the Toei made Saluki forks).

I know all this 'cause I have both a 55 Belriot and a 54 Saluki ... both
are retired and I've been too damn stubborn to put them up for sale at the
smart price that Les has here. So thumbs up to you, Les .. and if your bike
sells quick (as it should), I'll follow your lead and offer my two
dust-gathering babies up for sale with a similarly generous pricing scheme.

Good luck to you ... good bikes deserve good homes.

[RBW] Re: Road Hunq?

2016-11-16 Thread jeffrey kane
Hi John,
I don't know your bike but do know your roads -- and ride them daily. I'm
on 650b rigs, primarily running Gran Bois or Compass 42's and Panaracer
Pari Moto 1.75's. From all I've learned along the way -- lighter and more
supple tires are really worth it for ride quality. It's likely why other
contributors here favor the Thunder Burts and for sure it's why anyone with
a bike that will fit them is curious about the new Compass 700c x 44's. I
commute in Manhattan daily and ride River Road and points north as much as
possible -- usually looking to climb and/or find any unpaved sections I can
piece together on my loops in and out of the city. I own Bruce Gordon Rock
and Roads and Sim Works Homage tires but only use them when I know I'm
traveling to ride somewhere that the balance of paved vs. unpaved falls in
favor of the latter. I don't get an unusual amount of flats in the city and
almost never feel the need for tread/knobs. Were it me: I'd try those new
Compass 44's and keep some knobs in reserve -- and I'd certainly shy away
from thick tread, heavy tires -- at least for where we are.

Re: [RBW] Re: Berthoud Saddles

2016-10-17 Thread jeffrey kane
I'll chime in with a quick six year synopsis of my leather saddle
experience:

I like B-17's with upright bars but they don't work in drop bar mode for me
(too wide at the rear and in-between my legs). I tried a Brooks Swift in
drop bar mode for a while, which, wasn't too bad but did sag so much over a
short period of use (maybe two seasons) that I started to become frustrated
with the whole finicky leather saddle thing altogether. I haven't enjoyed
the continual evolving towards sag experience much but I do like the feel
of leather saddles (way more than the Cambiums -- but that's another story).

Next I tried an older Team Pro, which, by the numbers seemed like it would
be a better fit for my drop bar position (and it was). Unfortunately, it
deteriorated and ripped (but that was really due to it's age more than
anything else).

So faced with the decision to buy a new Team Pro -- or try yet another
saddle -- I went with the Aspin (Arivis, actually -- but same shape)
because that saddle also looked to fit my needs based on the numbers. And
it did -- but here's the odd part -- I must be the only person to be
disappointed with it's longevity. It broke in very quickly (read: sagged)
and once, when soaked in a rainstorm I didn't see coming -- sagged so much
that I thought it was a goner. To it's credit, I was able to get it back
into shape again and am finishing a second season with it -- though, I've
had to run the tension bolt in a bunch more than expected -- and again, I
always have that nagging feeling that it's sagging towards state of
ultimate uselessness.

I like that I can at least order new leather for it -- but wish I'd had
that 500 mile break-in period everyone talks about and the impression that
the leather is somehow thicker. Mine does not seem overly thick compared to
the Books models I've used in the past ... and well, it's not behaving much
differently, either.

It is comfortable, however, and I get that these are leather saddles,
therefor somewhat subject to the varying nature of "natural" material --
so I suppose I'll try replacing the leather sooner or later ... if not next
season then likely the season after.

I am curious if anyone else has had a similar Berthoud experience -- I
weigh between 150 and 160lb, generally, btw.
