Re: [RBW] Re: MUSA pants, knickers, shorts coming back

2021-08-29 Thread Patrick Moore
+ 1,000. Why, oh why do manufacturers of "cycling" pants cut them low in
back or, alternatively, with high crotches? I've owned any number of
high-end and low-end cycling shorts, knickers, and long pants that, this
defect apart, would have been wonderful, but instead cut them like low-rise
street pants.

One recent offender is the pair of Osloh cycling jeans as heavily
advertised by Bike Snob. I had to pay a tailor ~$100 to have the waist
pinched to get a halfway-decent fit -- her work did not solve the low
waistband, but it did make the waist snug at the back, thus less liable to
dropping. (And, I had her remove some of the superfluous "cycling"
adaptations, like the useless chain pad on the inside of the right ankle
-- they sewed in a snap-fastened ankle cinch; if that works, why the
pad??; and the stupid doubled rear pockets which just make it hard to get
your wallet properly placed.

OTOH, the pair of Nordstrom medium wool flannel dress pants that I had
converted to cycling dress knickers fit wonderfully, because they are high
rise; not 1940s high rise, but Jack Kennedy high rise, so that when you
drop down into the hooks, your back remains securely covered and insulated
from cold drafts between waistband and jersey hem.

My early-edition Riv knickers weren't the worst offenders, but they were
cut needlessly low in back. I sold them on for this and various other
cycling imperfections, at least to my taste.

and the seams on the rear pockets did not hold for long….other than than,
great durable shorts for cycling.

Re: [RBW] Re: MUSA pants, knickers, shorts coming back

2021-08-29 Thread Peter Adler
Although a pair of pants (or maybe knickers) sound appealing, I don't
expect to buy the new ones.

I own an earlier generation of the grey/blue pants, with Velcro leg straps.
The material is fine, for what it is. My two primary beefs are the elastic
belt and the silly-low rise, which combine to produce visible buttcrack
while riding, or at least visible underpants. It's meant that I hardly ever
wear them on a bike at all, as I do not wish to impose that scenery on
riders behind me.

As I recall, the rise is low by design, because Grant doesn't like loose
fabric on his butt. I do, especially if it means that the waistband stays
covered by my shirt/jersey/sweater/jacket. Perhaps it's the difference
between riding drop bars and uprights, which I'm not going to do

As with other Rivendell products, Grant designs products that work for
Grant. If what works for Grant doesn't work for you, you're going to have
to go elsewhere.

I've tried two replacements, both 1". One was from Amazon and it was total
crap. The other was from JoAnn Fabric and it is perfect! The latter was
"non-roll" and after comparing the two, I now understand what that means,
i.e. the Amazon one was so thin that it rolls lengthwise, whereas the JoAnn
band has ribbing that stops it from rolling or doubling over.
Here's a link with different colors:

I've also ditched the buckle and gone with a 1" plastic strap adjuster...

[RBW] Re: MUSA Pants

2019-12-20 Thread Grady Wright
I ordered the MUSA pants this time around because the fabric seemed to have
a little more structure than the previous version and I was in need of some
sporty pants. They arrived today and immediately I had to come here and
share how pleased I am with them. I could have ordered the L or the XL
based of the sizing chart. I ended up going with XL because I suspected my
tree trunk legs might not fit with the L size. XL was the right choice for
me. They have a nice fit. the pants are loose enough to be comfortable and
fitted enough to look flattering, even if I were to lose a few pounds. The
fabric is a little lighter than I had anticipated but it still has enough
fabric to hold some structure. I might describe them as "all season" light
enough for warmer weather and with a base layer warm enough for cross
county skiing (which I am going to try out tomorrow on the winter
solstice). I would buy again if they did another run. All in all pretty
perfect.

[RBW] Re: MUSA Pants

2019-12-20 Thread Christopher Cote
I received my pants today. I have to say that they are very nice.
Definitely a cut above typical cycling clothing in quality. The fit is
excellent. My 32" actual waist (typically wear pants labeled 30", yay
vanity sizing!) fits the medium pants very well, and the length is
sufficient for my 85cm PBH. The cuffs are slim, but I can still just pull
them up over my knees (not something I would do, just a data point). I
expect the right cuff will brush the outer chainring, so I'll plan on
wearing an ankle strap on the bike. I can fit my Fox knee pads under the
pants comfortably. Very happy overall.

Got the new MUSA pants yesterday.

For reference, I am 6"2, 220ish pounds, stocky build and the Large's fit
fantastic. Yes they are more snug than past iterations, but that guarantees
I will basically live in them. Super comfy out of the box, they go with
everything and haven't "slipped" down my bottom when I rode in them today
(unlike, say, the Patagonia baggies pants that I have which end up in a
special place if I try and ride in them).

Also, the light stretch is very clutch.

After one day, strong recommend.

I have the original tan, 2nd generation tan and then the 3rd generation blue.
The original nylon was lighter and better for hot days. The later stuff is
better for cooler days. None are good for spirited riding. They don't do sweat
well. I wear them for easy Sunday social club rides or causal rides to town for
coffee, lunch, vet supply pick up for my critters, a haircut, etc. They work
GREAT for that. The Riv shorts OTOH are okay for hard riding in warmer
weather. I have both the original butternut and the boosucker. The boosucker is
the bomb but came and went very quickly.

but in comparison to what? For casual or sweat pants I agree they're
pricey, but for pants designed for casual/commute cycling that can be worn
in light rain, the price compares well to what's out there.

[RBW] Re: MUSA Pants

2019-12-13 Thread Joe Bernard
I bought L grey/blue a few years ago and they work sorta, but I'm constantly
having to pull the legs up a bit 'cause they catch on my knees while pedaling.
More recently I bought L black and they were smaller/no go.

I like the look and idea of these garments, but they don't seem to work well
for my admittedly hard to fit self. I do love the shorts, I have several.

[RBW] Re: MUSA Pants?

2015-09-25 Thread Matthew J
> I checked the Riv site and saw they had very few sizes.

I first checked earlier this week. At that point and now (at least as the
RBW site opens for me) it is not a matter of few sizes of the MUSA pants on
the site, but no sizes. Had RBW kept MUSA pants on the site but in only a
few sizes, or even with a sold out note, I would have assumed, as you say,
they will be restocked soon.

As it is, MUSA pants are nowhere to be found on the site. I guess I could
have called first and asked are you selling something that is not even on
the site. But it seemed to make sense to me anyway to ask here whether
something was up before wasting their time.

Glad I amused you.

A couple of days ago, I checked the Riv site and saw they had very few

I find it hard to believe the long MUSA pants in various colors were not a
popular high volume product. I wear them all winter long. I was very
disappointed when they were cancelled, but I wouldn't pay $100 +.

2015-09-24 Thread Matthew J
Probably should set up a Burnt Hole in MUSA Pants While Camping sub group!

The soft nylon fabric that makes them so comfortable and adaptable to
different temperatures with changes in base layers does mean they are more
vulnerable to burns.

In my defense, a fellow camper insisted on stocking the camp fire with sap
filled pine logs that blew off embers onto me.

At least one pair survived intact.

2015-09-24 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Hi, all.

Well, I'm no longer hopeful. Now I see several of the "still available" (i. e.
still on the website) are in fact almost gone. That leads me to conclude the
MUSA line is heading for "hiatus" at least, as RBW indicated earlier. I'm glad
I have at least one pair of knickers that fit. For long pants I shall make do
with my XXL pants I guess.

Are there actual alternatives out there?

[RBW] Re: musa pants inseam question

2014-06-15 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi DS,
I'm 5' 7 (on a tall day). PBH ~80-ish. 30 inseam for pants.

I wear the MUSA Small pants. I just measured mine, and they are 31 inseam.
The leg is tapered, and when the zipper is closed, there's no heel
dragging. I measured the cuff, and it's ~13 (circumference).

I wear ~30 waist, and these fit fine. (Maybe a bit snug, but nitpicking.)

The pants (and knickers and shorts) are great for many activities. I've
noticed that the material seems more windproof and heat retaining than
other nylon-type bottoms that I have-- I run warmer in MUSA than my other
gear.

LMK if you have any questions,

Thanks Shoji. That helps a good bit. I'm a 32 waist normally but hoping a
small will work with the expandable strap on the waist. the shorts I have are a
medium and fit great. Are they snug with the straps on the waist expanded out
as far as they can go?

These will be more for hiking and camping mostly, some riding.

Re: [RBW] Re: musa pants inseam question

2014-06-15 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Yes, snug buckled with the straps expanded as far as possible. When
unbuckled, there's no issue, and I think would be fine for 32. You could
redo the buckle, if the fit was otherwise fine.

But maybe the medium would be better if the other dimensions are close
enough?

(Hiking and camping would be great-- and colder weather riding.)

[RBW] Re: MUSA Pants, Knickers Shorts

2009-09-30 Thread Bruce
I have both MUSA and the Zoics linked by David. The Musa is nicely made, but
flaps in the wind. with a loose fit, headwinds can be somewhat irritating, as
your shorts blow up up your leg. The MUSA has normal back pockets which are
very handy. The Zoics stay in place and are more comfortable to me. They lack
rear pockets but have leg pockets. They come with a removable, high quality
padded liner. Having weight in them though when I pedal is not great, as I can
feel it when I pedal. In short, both shorts have good and bad points.

I sold my MUSA knickers as they just felt a little dead to me. Like David,
I'd prefer MUSAs with some spandex mixed in.

2009-09-30 Thread Garth

Thanks for the replies. I think I may stick with Ex Officio's for
now. It doesn't sound like the elastic belt is what I'm looking for.
From the photos it appears the belt could be replaced rather simply as
it appears only to be stitched in one place but I'd rather get
them as I wanted. The great thing about Amphi pants is the nylon is so
supple you just roll them up to below your knees without bulk. I do
really like knickers though . I don't like pants which ,makes
things difficult in a mid-eastern winter. I've also used some Columbia
brand windpants that have drawcords built into the hem . just pull
them up and cinch the drawcord around the excess.

[RBW] Re: MUSA Pants, Knickers Shorts

2009-09-29 Thread Jim M.

I can't compare them directly to Ex Officio but they are really
lightweight nylon. Still tough, though. I use my knickers for a lot of
mountain biking (including occasional falling) and they are holding up
great. I also do errands in them a lot. The elastic keeps them up fine
for my road riding. For mountain riding, where I stand up a lot, they
tend to slip if I don't wear suspenders, but they are a size too big
(they were on sale) and I imagine they would be fine in the correct
size. All in all, I'm happy with them.

2009-09-29 Thread Cycletex

Don't have the knickers but I wear the Musa shorts and I've got a pair
of the Ex Officio pants that I'm pretty sure are the amphi's and are
definitely the super flyweight nylon.

The Musa's are lightweight but I wouldn't call it flyweight and the
fabric is just a hair / smidgen stiffer than the Ex Officio's. Not
stiff at all, but only in comparison. The Musa material has that
slightly shiny nylon effect.

My shorts also tend to come down in the back unless cinched up tight
and pulled up when saddling up. Even then they come down in the back a
bit. Still, I really like them. I wear a cutoff pair of Jonesware wool
padded shorts underneath and that's a real comfy combo even for long
rides. Off the bike, I wear the Musa's almost every day.

Belt is fine for my use. Never thought about it much so it must be
working properly. I don't think it's removable.

Hope that helps some.
