May be a good time to revisit Riv - they're apparently covered up in small
frames. A deal might be had.

If you don't mind the lack of lugs, a mid-90s Trek 850 is a great bike. I'm
sure there are other chromoly frames from that era that would work equally
well. As others have said, watch for the long top tube, though. You'll most
certainly need to replace the stem with something shorter in any

The ECR is a 29+ bike with 31 diameter wheels. I recommend against an
ECR for a short person. I can't suggest a 29+ for someone who normally
rides a 48 to 50 cm bike.
I'm waiting for my own 29+ bike, a Surly Krampus. I worked with Cycle
Monkey for a while on fitting and finally chose the smallest
As mentioned, top tubes are what will limit your choices. Would a Hillborne
work, or is the TT too long?
If not, how about a Salsa Vaya? Smaller sizes have 26 wheels and fit 50mm
tires. Is the 50cm TT too long?
Thanks so much for the trail bike suggestions to date. I'd love to invest
in the Atlantis or Bombadil and that may be the down the line plan. On
that front, in the smaller size range, is there really much of a difference
between those two models for trail use? I'm well equipped in the areas
Lesli,
I have a small older Spec Rockhopper on the Redding, Ca. CL right now. It
is my son's bike, and of note, he is going to an early year Bontrager Race.
At any rate the RH is a very nice bike. My kid really enjoyed it!

I love my two Atlantises. But I don't think an Atlantis is ideal for a
trail bike, because it doesn't, quite, accept big tires. I have two
Schwalbe Big Bens in my garage, that were supposed to go on my
Atlantis. They don't fit.

RE: ECR: there's and extra small frame, check the geometry and standover
height. I ride a 48 Sam and would ride a SM ECR. I already have a a SM
Puglsey and it's fine. Nothing wrong with 29+ and *wide* tires; you can
roll over anything, believe me. I have as yet rode my Pugsley in snow. It

Not sure if it meets your needs but I've got a nice MB-4 in purple... Really
small... That need a new home.

My 5'5 wife can fit our slightly larger MB-5 so this smaller one is ready for
a new home. Cheap and has some 'Grant
There are a bunch of very nice lugged steel mountain bikes from the 80's.
I've got two early Stumpjumpers and they make great light-duty off road
bikes. And it's fairly easy to retrofit modern type shifters stuff if
you're inclined. I just stay with period stuff (which there's plenty of)
You won't find it used but I'd love to build up a Surly ECR; sizes to fit
you too. Otherwise a Hunqapilar.

To follow up on Kellie's idea, a used Surly Troll would work. If that is
overkill, then look for a used 1980's Fuji mountain bike. My wife had one
in a small size in the late 1980's. Fit her very well. A lot of older
mountain bikes have longer top tubes. Keep that in mind when looking.

I second the notion of looking out for those long top-tubes. That's the
primary reason a vintage MTB won't work well for me.
If a Bombadil or Atlantis is what you want and it's financially feasible, I
say just go for it. If you have financial constraints you might consider

I'd look out for a small Bontrager. The collectible ones are the Race and
Race Lites.

The more plebeian ones are the Privateers. The '99 Privateer Comps came
with Chris King hubs... stock.
My Privateer has Midge bars, and I'm still
