[RBW] Re: Swapping Bars Threaded Stems

2013-03-30 Thread Garth
I use the VO stem adapter on one bike and like it . I think it's a grand
invention ! I don't mind the look of using the adapter with a threadless
stem at all , it's simply different. The flexibility of using the adapter
and being able to swap out lengths is AWESOME !! To me, the days of using
the traditional stem are gone , I wasn't ever fond of the inflexibility
of the whole idea anyways, that to change anything you had to unwrap the
bars and get a whole new stem . I bought a cool looking NOS Koski stem on
ebay to go with it :)

Yes, Nitto makes a number of stem adapters, but the tallest one (MTC-12)
offers 20mm less height than the VO, according to specs.

Shoji and Jeremy are correct, the V brake lever won't work with cantilevers
unless it has the adapter built in. Unfortunately, the set of Soma Oxfords
I have sitting around have Tektro V brake levers or I'd off them to you to
try. Let me know if the other swap is too much of a hassle. Am pretty
sure I have some cantilever brake levers sitting around and would be happy
to let you use them and the handlebar to try things out for a while.

And like others, sorry to hear about your current issues. I've got some

RE: [RBW] Re: Swapping Bars Threaded Stems

2013-03-29 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
So sorry about your problems, Liesl, but all miles are good miles - even those
upright ones!

As for the stem issue, this combo - quill adapter, and threadless stem piece --
from VO is, IMO, quite attractive - though more expensive than the Nashbar:
http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/stems/quill-stems/vo-threadless-stem-adaptor.html
. I think there are similar less expensive combos.

There are a few quill - threadless adapters out there. Nitto makes one

bikes (argh!) so I can have a more upright position. I have an old mountain
bike that has Alba's on it. That's my fisrt project: steal them and
install them on the protobleriot. BUT the alba bars (all nicely taped and
shellacked, etc) are on a threadless mountain bike stem. I could easily
take the front plate off the the stem and move it oh-so-easy but I need a
threaded stem with a face plate (I hope I am using the right terms here so
that I am explaining clearly...). I found a cheap ugly Nashbar

Is there another more elegant quill solution that has a front plate on it?

Or should I just bite it and disassemble and unwind the tape and get out
the goo-gone and...and...and...do the whole mess?

I wait with bated breath for your collective wisdom!

[RBW] Re: Swapping Bars Threaded Stems

2013-03-28 Thread Liesl
Ah, good options, especially the VO. Next question: the alba's have some
reasonable Tektro Quartz brake levers that work with v-brakes. Anyone
know if these levers would work with canti's?

(I'm also contemplating Bosco's but I gotta figure out expenses—that's why
the VO as a temporary and efficient move sounds poifect! especially if the
levers work)

and not to worry; my neck isn't totally crunched, just a little between
#67. More upright position will be just the ticket.

thanks pals,
Liesl

HI Liesl,
Best wishes for a comfortable solution!

Here's a link to the VO quill to threadless, if you didn't already see it:
http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/stems/quill-stems/vo-threadless-stem-adaptor.html

(I think it's actually a nice solution.)

The V-brakes are gonna be a problem, tho. Linear pull won't play nicely
with cantis, as linears pull more cable.

Good luck, Sho

[RBW] Re: Swapping Bars Threaded Stems

2013-03-28 Thread Jeremy Till
Don't know about your levers specifically but a lot of flat bar levers
these days have an adjustment for cable pull, so they can be used either
with v-brakes or canti/caliper brakes. Pull the lever back and see if
there is some mechanism for moving the pivoting cradle which holds the head
of the cable between two slots, sometimes marked c and v (the
canti/caliper one will be closer to the lever pivot). You may have to pop
out a little rubber or plastic plug or rotate a notched cylinder to move
the cradle between the two slots. If so, than the new levers should work
great with caliper brakes with the cradle in the c slot.

Liesl,

Also sorry to hear of your neck issue, but glad it's not something worse, I
keep getting older and new and lovely issues pop up! Ah the pleasure of
getting older.

On the matter of stems I agree with David the VO threadless adapter is a
option, not as streamlined as a Nitto Quill stem but seems handy in making
handle bar swaps.

Sorry to hear of your news.
In light of your nice bikes I would suggest a stem adapter like the VO.
You can attach a stem with removable faceplate to it and it's silver so
with a little tape it doesn't look too bad.
