Re: [RE-wrenches] Outback Radian Generator Charging

2023-10-27 Thread jay via RE-wrenches
What I don’t understand is that the inverter was limiting amps while the
generator was not.
If the generator wasn’t able to produce the power, then it would have had the
usual issues which causes the inverter to drop it and then reconnect.
But that wasn’t happening so it appears the generator is doing fine.

Its 3% per 1000, and the variables of density altitude are: temperature,
humidity, air pressure, elevation.

I don’t understand why the generator support would allow for higher amps as
well?

You have had many good suggestions but note you are on border line power,
at 2200 teet your power is down 10% note gen's are 80% of name plate, and
you are asking for 7.2 kW from a Genny that with atmospheric correction is
7.2 kW

Re: [RE-wrenches] Outback Radian Generator Charging: Support mode

2023-10-27 Thread Kirk Herander via RE-wrenches
Can anyone explain why changing to Support mode on the generator input
boosts battery charging amps?

The Radian manual explanation for Support mode gives no clue about this
"fix". It only states that Support mode will allow batteries to provide
extra power to loads if demand exceeds max. gen programmed input amps.
I also have an offgrid Radian seeming to undercharge from a genny, and I
just changed its input mode to Support to see what happens.

We had voltage & low output amperage to no amperage.

Turns out there was a junction box that had been forgotten about in the

arcing.

There was enough contact for voltage readings & not enough for any amps to
flow.

Double check all connections?

Charger Limit is also set to 30 amps. We tried raising the total AC input limit
to max and that may have helped increase the chargeby 200-300watts up to 4.8kw
but thats it. By my math we should be able to see about 6KW+/- of charging
power.

We are using Generator input mode I believe. We will try switching to Support
mode and see if that helps.

By the way batteries are 8- Simpliphi 3.8.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Outback Radian Generator Charging

2023-10-25 Thread William Miller via RE-wrenches
Amos:

At the risk of stating the obvious: The batteries have to be ready to
accept maximum charge. They need to be in good condition and fully
discharged. Max charge amps will occur only briefly then the charge rate
will start to taper. Your charging settings need to be correct including
temperature compensation. Any other charge inputs need to be disabled
during testing, such as solar, wind or hydro.

Check for THD on the generator output. If the waveform deviates much from
sinusoidal the inherent power will be reduced. Radians have been known to
instigate high THD rates on generator feeds during charging, especially in
Generator input mode. Trying the Support mode is good advice.

(We had this case
<https://millersolar.com/MillerSolar/case_studies/25_GFI%20Tripping/GFI_Tripping.html>
a while back. Recently a random person called to relate he had similar
problems and found our case study. He installed a capacitor (20mFd?) on
the generator leads and the THD decreased significantly. I have not tried
this.)

2023-10-25 Thread integrityenergy101 via RE-wrenches
Charger Limit is also set to 30 amps. We tried raising the total AC input limit
to max and that may have helped increase the chargeby 200-300watts up to 4.8kw
but thats it. By my math we should be able to see about 6KW+/- of charging
power. We are using Generator input mode I  believe.  We will try switching to
Support mode and see if that helps.  By the way batteries are 8- Simpliphi 3.8.

What input mode are you using?

Try switching to "support" mode and see if the charging current increases.
