Re: [Repeater-Builder] Silver Plating - Cheap Easy

Thanks for the info George.  Yes, the use of the word developer was most
likely my bad.  I did processing in my teen years, had my own darkroom and
while writting the below, I was thinking of Hypo. Bbut then a lot has changed
in the past 70 years since my developing days and I assumed things may have
changed and the process along with it.

Your thoughts are appreciated and I'll file this away for future use.  Thanks

It's actually used photographic FIXER that contains a lot of free silver...
the fixer removes any unexposed silver in the film emulsion.  For many years I
recovered the silver from my fixer by adding powdered zinc, which will dissolve
more easily in the solution than silver will, causing the silver to precipitate
out.  Collected over 28 ounces over the years.

His method of silver plating probably involved connecting the negative lead of
a
low-voltage source to the can, filling it with used fixer, and then
suspending
a zinc electrode in the solution, connected to the positive lead.  The zinc
goes
into solution, and the silver, instead of precipitating out, plates out onto
the
can.  If the fixer is sufficiently loaded with silver (exhausted, in
photo-speak), it will plate out on copper without any current source, but
adding
the batteries will speed things up result in a thicker layer of silver.

A couple of years back, in an exchange with an engineer from Texas Instrument

silver plating procedure he uses on his duplexers.  He uses Photographic
Developer (which has a really high level of 'free silver') and a simple one or
two cell power source = 1.5 to 3.0 volts.  (While not discussed, I would

that 'used fluid' may be better than new and may be obtained very cheaply).
This should be an ideal solution for the DIYers in our group.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] radial tire static?

2004-11-23 Thread Cecil Ferguson

Had much of that trouble back in the '50s We used powdered carbon. I
have no clue on availability today, but to install, jack vehicle, rotate
wheel so the valve is at the bottom position, remove valve core which
will deflate tire. Lower the jack with the valve stem still in the
bottom position. This will complete the deflation of the tire. With a
home brewed paper funnel, pour carbon powder into funnel as someone
jacks auto, which will suck the powder into the tire. Then reinflate.
 Good luck.

Gene Ferguson, W4FWG

Not repeater related so much, but I thought the great minds here
might know...

One of my corporate bosses, a ham, is having his bridgestone tires
generate static while they are rolling, interfering with AM radio
reception. I know somebody used to sell a powder to put in the tires
that dissapated the static, but can't find any info on it now. It
has to do with some problem with low rolling resistance tires that
have low carbon content..

Any ideas? thanks!

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Help needed

2004-10-30 Thread Cecil Ferguson

Makes a lot of sense, but the gentleman who has offered them to us is in
the business. We will be hanging our new repeater on a commercial tower
he owns. The unit is a base unit, is in working condition and he has offered
to tune it and the duplexers we hope to obtain, for free. Can't beat the
price. I am handicapped at this time as he is out of state for a few days
and we haven't seen the equipment. I believe I have the answer on the crystal
units, however, as I'm told we can use the existing element, just replacing
the crystal and getting it tuned and adjusted for the new crystal. I guess
we're down to getting the best possible offer on the duplexers.

Thanks very much for your response and thoughts

Thanks, Joe. I truly appreciate your input I haven't worked with repeaters
since the mid-70's, helped a guy make a set of duplexers, I did the machining,
silver soldering and looked over his shoulders as he tuned them. Haven't
touched duplexers since, so I had no idea--.

It will be a few days before we can investigate and determine exactly what
we are receiving, if we decide to go that direction. If not, we're looking
at a turn key GE repeater.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Help needed - Micor

2004-10-29 Thread Cecil Ferguson

Tnanks for the reply. The current system has quite a mixture, 440 receive
links to a separate 2 meter receive site. With separate XMIT and RCV sites,
we don't have need for duplexeers. We do have a set, but they are for frequencies
above the ham band, or some other spread. The lowest freqency we can get
the lower frequency cans to tune is very near the upper limits for 2 meters.
The higher frequency cans are outside the ham band and and when we attempt
to bring them closer to the desired frequency, the spread is beyond belief.
We had professional helpand they, too, advise that the cans will not tune
to the ham band. The outer cylinders are made of aluminum. If they were
copper, I could "make them work. I can do machine work."

We are to receive, free of charge, if you can believe that, a complete, working
repeater, less pwr supply. We even get 180 ft. of 7/8th inch hardline, same
price. No antenna,though - gosh!

Thanks again for the come back.

Thanks, Joe, and realizing my goof,, my response was in jest as well. Thanks
for the information. This is the price range I'm seeking. As related in
another response, I have a $750.00 offer, tuned to our frequency and guaranteed.
I believe there is someone on this list that can get us a set a little cheaper.
We are a small club, growing, but with very limited funds.

Thanks and 73
Gene

I have had cheap duplexers (old telephone company IMTS
duplexers) and tried my best to make them work without
success. I would consider a cheap set of good 2 meter
duplexers to cost $200-300.

The duplexers are not the place to be too cheap. Been
there, done that, got the IMTS duplexers in the attic
doing nothing.

OK, so go easy. I said I was new to the list.
Don't hit me too hard
the very first time, or is this the norm? You know,
cheap ;is relative.
 Thanks anyway.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Help needed (humor)

2004-10-29 Thread Cecil Ferguson

Hi, Neil. Yep, if push comes to shove, I'll build up a duplexed using, not
RG-58 but RG-8 or better. Had a friend in SC some 35 years back, make one
and it worked swell. Had no problems what so ever. The antenna you suggest,
of course, is an excellent choice grin. We have hard line promised
FOC (free of charge).

Thanks for your reply and suggenstion.

Would that be a Motorola Micor ??

Actually, I think he meant GE Micron, it's similar in size and features
to the Motorola Master 11 which was popular in the near future to build
repeaters from. These radios are not to be confused with the less
popular Motorola Mitrex, Syntor XX, and GE Pionex. Any of these can be
connected to "a set of duplexers" (plural) using Radio Shack RG-58 and
of course to your favorite Cushcraft Ringo antenna, via 9913.

(it almost hurt to type this) grin

Enjoy!

No, the rods are full length, in fact they will bottom out. With the caps
or inductors removed they simply will not tune down to the ham frequency.
With the caps in place, we can get to the upper ham band. No soap for the
others. It is uncertain where they came from, have been stored in one of
our member's storage facility for years. We haven't put a price on these
at this time.

How much for the duplexer? Have the tuning rods been cut short?

I have a Sinclair Q202G 4-cavity Pass/Reject VHF Duplexer which is
currently ttuned up on a 600 KHz split (on 166.350/166.950 MHz). It came
came with a Motorola MSR-2000 Repeater on the same frequency - I just
picked these up from the BLM with a bunch of other gear and they're

to my needs. Contact me off the list if you're interested.

I am a new member of the group with a question. We have the opportunity
to replace our present "pieced together" repeater with a Micron, which
is offered at a better than believable price. We will need crystals,
however. Can anyone give us the approzimate cost of a set of crystal
units for this endeavor. Sorry, I can't provide more info at this time,
as I haven't seen the units, which are operational at this time. Too,
any good leads on a set of duplexers for 2 meters? Must be operationad
and cheap!

Any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated.
