Much as I'd love to put a VXA or AIT drive on my home network, I don't
want to spend that much money on the drive.
I've had enough bad experiences with DAT and DAT-II drives that I've
ruled out that option. It seems to be coming down to NS-20 and Onstream
ECHO 30.
DRIVE NS-20 ECHO 3
based on your speed spec, I'd go for the ECHO30. The 50 MB/min
throughput of the NS20 would be fine for 10BaseT, but if you ever go to
fast ethernet that drive would become a bottleneck.
I haven't used either one, but am interested to hear what you think
since I'm also looking for something in th
If you'll be backing up over 10BT, then you might want to do the NS-20. It
most closely matches the performance of the network, and should prevent
excessive underruns, repositioning and rebuffering, which may improve
overall throughput.
Just a thought. It's open for comments.

Hiya!
Is there a way to get a batch file (running Retrospect on NT)
to tell me the machine name [and Retrospect container name] of what's
being backed up? The example scripts do not tell me the machine
name. Compare this excerpt from my Mac (applescript) report:

For that kind of money, why not just buy a refurbished iMac, put NetPresenz
on it, and use it as an ftp storage set repository? Just a thought...

I am having a related problem. Up until two days ago everything was working
fine, but since then a backup has yet to complete. Last night, the backup
computer did not even finish backing up itself. Our back up server is a G3
400 Mhz with 192 MB of RAM with 23 GB of Hard drive space and our back
I've been trying to keep up with all the discussion on the Yamaha
CDRW8424 drive (which I have) and making it work with Retrospect.
On the site http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/SCSI/yamaha8424.html someone
mentioned that Dantz was shipping an updated driver for owners of
this CD-RW drive. Is this a

Title: RE: Backup and Compare Performance ... lots of small files
I'm not familiar with this particular backup device but it sounds like the read head is out of alignment with the write head. To eliminate other causes we would
1. clean the heads
2. run a short test backup/ compare/ restore on

Tape has higher capacity, which lets you keep more files and more versions of
