RE: CPU speed vs. Network speed?
I have a first generation G3 beige desktop tower I am using as a server and the Retrospect runs from there without problems. I back up to DDS-3 Data tape. The 6100 bus is too slow to benefit from a 100Mbps Ethernet card, but the G3 card will at least allow it to maximize the existing SCSI and network I/O. In reality, they'd be better off buying a first-generation G3 box instead...one of the original beige desktops or minitowers wouldn't cost much more than a G3 upgrade for the 6100, and it would be a much better backup server. DDS4 drive eating tapes
Hi all, We've got a APS DDS4 (Sony SDT-1) that eats a tape every month or so. It's been back to APS once and I thought it was fixed, but today :::munch:::. When it eats one, it will eject the tape, but but a loop of the tape will still be inside the drive. One thing I just noticed is that even when it ejects a tape properly, the door on the tape cartridge is still partially retracted, and doesn't fully close until you remove the tape. This is different than the DDS2 drive we have and seems wrong. The drive in question is running Retrospect 5.1.1 on NT Server. All media was replaced with new tapes when it was returned from APS. Is this drive just broken? Is this something that just happens sometimes with DDS mechanisms? Will tape drives ever be reliable? Re: Feeling Stupid
Also have you: 1) Restarted the computer? This must be done at least once after you first setup an automated run. I've run into this were computers tend to be left on 24/7. 2) Have you looked at the preview so see what retrospect thinks should be happening? This really does work...honest. Before I would conjecture on what's happening at your site I'd like to ask you some questions. Like: 1) what does the log say? 2) do you have any error messages in modal/non-modal boxes (like backup failed with error "blah blah blah")? 3) did you save the scripts? 4) is your date/time correct? (you might want to go to AutomatedCheck to make sure your script is ready and AutomatedPreview to see when the next script is scheduled to run) 5) do you have media in your drive and is it turned on? Pam P.S. The walkthrough starts on page 57 ("Creating the Script") of the manual and moves into "Executing the Script" further on. It may also be useful to manually run the script to make sure it works (assuming you did go to AutomateScripts and save a script). -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ Problems?: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Tape Drive Compatibility
What confuses me is that why don't the tape drive mfg write their software to be recognized by Windows as a tape device and all Retrospect would have to be able to do is read and write to that device through the Windows library... Wait, that's what is suppose to happen, no? I doubt Dantz would trust and/or use them anyway. Who you gonna call when things go south. Dantz or the coder of the generic DLL? -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ Problems?: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Feeling Stupid
Hi Derek, There are a few factors that may be preventing your scripts for running, in addition to the suggestions already offered. If Retrospect is no longer autolaunching, first verify that you've got it set to automatically launch. Go to SpecialPreferences from the Retrospect Directory and click Notification. Is "Autolaunch Retrospect" checked? Does Retrospect try to run a script right after you start it, but not at the specified time? If not, verify that your script is scheduled correctly. Go to AutomatePreview from the Retrospect Directory. Are there scripts scheduled to run? If there are, is the top one scheduled to run soon (as opposed to months or years in the future)? If it is scheduled to run some time in the future, you may have deferred execution of the script. Change this by editing your script. If there are no scripts scheduled to run, you need to reschedule your scripts. Go to AutomateScripts from the Retrospect Directory to do this. If Retrospect tries to run a script right after you launch the program, Retro.Startup, may be damaged. Replace it by doing the following: quit Retrospect, trash Retro.Startup, restart the computer, launch and quit Retrospect, then restart the Mac again. This will produce a fresh copy of Retro.Startup. Also, if you are running Mac OS 9 and have Multiple Users turned on, Retrospect will not automatically launch. For a full Mac OS 9 compatibility statement, please go to http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=os9 If your script still isn't running, it may be time to give tech support a call when you can be in front of your computer. I guess I might just be confused on how this is "supposed" to work, so I'll describe what I'm doing, and hopefully someone can tell me which part of it is wrong. ;-) [ First, I've confirmed that Retro.Startup is in the extensions folder, as I know this is a common source of problems] I have created a scheduled-backup script, for 00:15 every morning. I have tried: (a) quitting Retrospect, thinking that some automated process would start Retrospect back up after midnight to start up the backup (b) left Retrospect running (running idle, but running) all day, so that hopefully at 12:15am, it would wake up and start the backup process. Neither process worked, so I'm at a loss as to exactly how this SHOULD be done. Can someone give me sorta a step-by-step of what I'm doing wrong? Unless I'm blind as well, I don't see any "simple walkthrough" in the manual. :( D -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ Problems?: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ Problems?: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Appletalk backup problems
I've set up a new backup system for 25 workstations using a blue G3, an Ecrix drive and 100B-t ethernet. All the systems on the LAN were backing up nicely except for one server, a blue/white G3 running Filemaker server 3.0. For security reasons, this system was set up with the Retrospect AppleTalk client, and IP was not loaded. I noticed that the machine was backing up very slowly, the data getting backed up at about 6-7 megs a minute, unlike any other system on the LAN. In order to resolve this problem, I loaded TCP/IP and gave the system a nonroutable IP address (192.168...) but Retrospect couldn't see the system. I thought Retrospect would address systems on different subnets (on the same cable), but consequently I guess that this was a mistaken notion. Anyway, it didn't work. So, I reinstalled the Appletalk client. Now Retrospect wouldn't even see the server at all. Nothing I did would get the Retrospect server system to acknowledge the Filemaker server, even though I could see the system using MacPing or personal file sharing. Finally I set up the system to be backed up using personal file sharing and got a gratifyingly high backup ratelike 60-70 MB/min. I'm wondering what could be happening here. What would prevent Retrospect from seeing an Appletalk client on this network?
