Re: ASIP 6.2 and Retrospect 4.2A Client

2000-11-15 Thread matt barkdull

Retrospect should not corrupt anything. The worst case is that the
mail files will not be backed up.

Why? Retrospect does a scan of the volume and reads in all the
names and modification dates. If the modification date is changed
between the scan and when the file is actually suppose to be backed
up, it will be skipped.

I assume that you have the ASIP mail server not running as well. Make
sure it is not. That's a conflict with EIMS.

To get around those possible problems, you need to make sure EIMS is
shutdown during the backup. Also make sure that all clients are
disconnected from the file server to avoid them changing files during
the backup.

Re: ASIP 6.2 and Retrospect 4.2A Client

2000-11-15 Thread Jeff Grossman

I am running AppleShare IP, Retrospect, and EIMS on the same server. Will I
run into any problems when I do a backup of that machine? I don't want to
corrupt any of the EIMS mail data.

Thanks,
Jeff

Re: ASIP 6.2 and Retrospect 4.2A Client

2000-11-15 Thread Irena Solomon

You should also make sure that you have the AppleShare Memory Manager
extension if it is required for your configuration. From the Retrospect 4.3
Readme:

AppleShare IP 5.0 or later may freeze or crash when Retrospect is open,
though Retrospect is not the cause. Apple Computer has provided a fix for
this problem with AppleShare IP, an extension known as the AppleShare Memory
Manager, which you should obtain and use. You can learn more about and
download the extension from Apple:

http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n10129

In response to your question, though, no, there are no direct conflicts
between the Retrospect client and ASIP 6.x.

ASIP 6.2 is a bad puppy in and of itself. Frankly, I'd upgrade it to
6.3.x and Retrospect to 4.3. Then see if those nasty 519's clear up and
let us know. Of course, I'd strongly encourage moving the Retrospect
server to a machine that isn't running ASIP also, but that may not be
possible for everyone.

Re: ASIP 6.2 and Retrospect 4.2A Client

2000-11-15 Thread matt barkdull

Matt, you need to make sure you put a filter in there to not backup
the mail database. Otherwise it will lock up every time.

Do an Exclude filter on "AppleShare IP Mail" database

This worked for me. Of course, it's not backing up the mail
database. There is a script that Dantz supplies that will shutdown
the mail server, make a duplicate of the AppleShare IP Mail database
and then start the server back up. It works great, but you still need
the filter. It will just backup the copy of the database.

Silent Installation of Retrospect Client 5.15

2000-11-15 Thread Thone, Bradley A (Sbcsi)

Hi, All!

Well, I did some digging.

It IS possible to install (or uninstall) Retrospect Client 5.15 silently.

1. Using WinZip (or similar), extract the files contained in "CLIENT
SETUP.EXE" to a folder.
In this folder will be 10 files, one of them will be "SETUP.EXE".
2. In your C:\WINNT folder, delete the file SETUP.ISS (or just rename it if
you want).
3. Run "SETUP.EXE -R" from the folder created in #1.
The "-R" tells setup to record the installation options you select during
the install.
4. Complete the installation (or removal).
5. The installer has created a file called SETUP.ISS in your C:\WINNT
folder. Copy that to the source files folder created in #1.

What I did:

UNINSTALLATION
Uninstalled Retrospect (by doing a SETUP -R)
Copied SETUP.ISS from C:\WINNT to my source files folder, renaming it to
REMOVE.ISS.
Deleted SETUP.ISS from C:\WINNT

INSTALLATION WITH REBOOT
Installed Retrospect (by doing a SETUP -R)
Copied SETUP.ISS from C:\WINNT to my source files folder, renaming it to
REBOOT.ISS.
Deleted SETUP.ISS from C:\WINNT

INSTALLATION WITHOUT REBOOT
Installed Retrospect (by doing a SETUP -R)
Copied SETUP.ISS from C:\WINNT to my source files folder, renaming it to
NOREBOOT.ISS.
Deleted SETUP.ISS from C:\WINNT
Started Retrospect Client service (NET START "RETROSPECT CLIENT")

In my logon scripts I:
1. Copy the source files folder to the user's workstation
2. Copy REMOVE.ISS to SETUP.ISS
3. Run SETUP -S for silent installation (removal in this case)
4. Copy NOREBOOT.ISS to SETUP.ISS
5. Run SETUP -S (installation this time)
6. Start the service (NET START "Retrospect Client")

Now I can perform new installs, upgrades, or removals from logon scripts.

Hope this helps y'all out.

Now, if Dantz would just make the client installations generic (meaning
don't copy the workstation name into the CONFIG value in the registry), and
break out that CONFIG data into multiple readable registry values and data,
I'd be happy as a clam.

Brad Thone

ASIP 6.2 and Retrospect 4.2A Client

2000-11-15 Thread matt holland

Are there any conflicts between these two?

A B+W G3 fileserver of ours has been crashing consistently during the
compare process (while the Retrospect server logs a 519 error). Last Night I
Stopped ASIP and restarted with all of its extensions disabled (and a few
other unnecessary: Colorsync, ARA, and a few MS and Macromedia Internet
extensions) and the backup went without a hitch.

TIA

RE: Daily Problems with out of Sync Error messages...

2000-11-15 Thread Thone, Bradley A (Sbcsi)

I see this on Retrospect 5.15 with a Compaq server and a Compaq AIT loader
using the built-in SCSI port.

I do not see this on Retrospect 5.15 with a Compaq server and a Compaq AIT
loader using an Adaptec 2940UW.

Check your SCSI bus for errors (controller, cable, and device).

Brad.

I've seen this when the volume containing the catalogs is almost full
and the save after the backup is completed fails. Also if the directory
of this volume is corrupted.
