Retro didn't ask for license number?

1999-12-16 Thread Jeffry C. Nichols

I recently added another client to the backups. Using AppleShare I
loaded the 4.2 client software onto the Macintosh. Everything loaded
fine, I restarted, etc.

Once back at the backup computer (BW G3, Retrospect 4.2) I checked
the client list, and the recently added client showed up, but with no
license number next to it. I know I had some licenses left, but I still
had to put in the next number (or a free one) before.

Is Retrospect just using one of the license "slots" and not reporting
what number? It would be nice to know what number it is using so
that I don't try and duplicate it at a later point.

Thanks.

Appletalk vs. TCP/IP backup speeds

2000-04-07 Thread Jeffry C. Nichols

I have an interesting situation on one of my client macs. It is a
bluewhite G3 with a 10/100 card built-in. The backup machine is a
beige G3, 266 MHz, backing up to an Exabyte 8mm tape drive, networked
via an Asante 10/100 PCI card.

Using the "info" box on the client G3 when using TCP/IP the speed is
something like 80-100 Kb/sec, while changing to Appletalk I get
around 800-1000 Kb/sec (approximate 10 fold increase).

My understanding was that appletalk was a "lesser" connection
protocol as compared to TCP/IP.

The network system is Cat 5 (or 6) wiring, and I know that several
other macs, including another bluewhite G3 (communicating at
4500-7000 Kb/sec), are supporting and running at 100 Mb.

We are still checking the ports and all for that Mac, but I'm still
curious about the difference between appletalk and TCP/IP.

Thanks.

simple question/problem

2000-06-28 Thread Jeffry C. Nichols

I've checked the FAQ and technical bulletins, but I can't find
anything about error -24121, extension too old. I get this
concerning the "Retrospect Help" file.

I reloaded the Help file from the CD, but that did not work.

Can someone help me with this? I know it's minor, but it's annoying.

Thanks.

Compression and speed

2000-07-13 Thread Jeffry C. Nichols

With all this talk of compression, speed, different drives, etc.,
would it be possible for someone at Dantz to set up a database that
Retrospect users could contribute to with the purpose of documenting
the different systems and their performance?

At a minimum, it could include backup computer type, backup device
used, connection type (SCSI, USB, Firewire), typical backup speeds as
reported in the log file, and most importantly, footnotes to
problems/solutions that people have tried or used to improve their
own backup.

As an example, I'm currently fighting the problem of several backup
clients which run faster via Appletalk than TCP/IP. Also, I'd like
to know, as someone else mentioned, would it be advantageous to get a
SCSI-2 or SCSI-3 card, or am I limited by the speed of the backup
device itself?

Just my $0.02.

feature request

2000-08-18 Thread Jeffry C. Nichols

While we have been successful in eliminating most of the problem
backup computers, we are still struggling with a few more. In
particular, if a backup computer slows to a crawl (as one last did)
then the backup nevers finishes overnight. For example, one of our
problem Macs started backing up at 10:56 PM last night, and it has
only copied 47 Mb at 9:30 AM this morning!

My feature request would be to have a "skip" client option along with
the "pause" and "stop" options so that either you could manually skip
a client, or even better, set a parameter to skip a client if the
backup on that client has exceeded "X" minutes/hours.

Any likelihood of this being implemented?

Thanks.

similar question about firewire/SCSI

2001-01-12 Thread Jeffry C. Nichols

In one of the messages, there was talk about firewire to SCSI bridges
and how Retrospect supports them.

Is this support for specifically made devices? The reason I ask is
we just bought a new iMac and it gets less use overall than the
current backup computer. I was considering purchasing a firewire to
SCSI converter (Orange Micro makes one for $100) to run our Exabyte
external tape drive.

Would this configuration work? Is the converter going to slow things
down even more than the current set up? (beige G3 tower, built-in
SCSI).

Thanks.

Firewire to SCSI converter.

2001-01-19 Thread Jeffry C. Nichols

I recently bought a FireREX firewire to SCSI converter in the hopes
of using my Exabyte 8700 LT (8mm) tape drive with out new iMac.

I've tried just about everything I can to get this to work, but with no luck.

Has anyone set up a similar system, or is this just not going to work?

Thanks.
