RE: Back-up files are too large [MacRAR and MacUnRAR]

2000-11-15 Thread Dan Willson

Mac versions of RAR are here (I can't say enough kind words about
versiontracker.com):

MacRAR 2.5.1 (shareware, release date 9/8/2000)
http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=2620

MacUnRAR 1.2 (freeware, release date 11/151999)
http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=2684

Enjoy!

Cheers,

What you are describing is essentially what the RAR format does.

Do a search for "RAR" on:

Stuffit Deluxe for Mac lets you set a 'maximum' segment size. The segment
size seems limited only by the Mac OS max file size.

RE: Back-up files are too large

2000-11-14 Thread Joel Moore

Hmmm...At first I couldn't see the point of this but after thinking about it
it seems quite useful.

I was thinking that it would require a program that creates some sort of
proprietary zip file format that includes info about other files in the set.
I suppose spanning could be used to this effect (which is built into most
zip programs) but it seems to be tied to the floppy drive. I suppose the
best solution would be a program that let you set a "maximum file size"
variable and then it would creat independent zip files. It could even
support it's own proprietary "index file" to keep track of groups of zip
files and what's in each one. Also, in this scenario, if one of the zip
files was to get corrupted you wouldn't lose everything (as you do with
spanning).

I've never heard of a zip program that does this but there should be and if
there isn't I may have stumbled upon my next programming project.

Are their any file splitter programs , that will split a 'zip' file for
example, and leave the 'parts' in a zip format?

Thanks for your answer.

If you have StuffIt Deluxe (not just StuffIt Expander and/or DropStuff),
there is a utility called DropSegment that will segment a larger file into
smaller ones.

The only downside to this is that you need twice the disk space,

RE: Back-up files are too large

2000-11-14 Thread Joel Moore

I'm coming from the PC world here, but there must be some Mac utilities out
there for splitting large files up. To see what I mean search for "file
splitter" at http://www.softseek.com. These are all PC utilities but if you
follow some of the links to the home pages you may find that they also
provide Mac versions as well. Alternatively you could find a Mac software
search site and search for similar programs.

I guess the only question will be whether the programs can handle a file
that size. It seems most of these are designed for splitting files so they
fit on floppy disks.

Back-up files are too large

2000-11-14 Thread Dantz

Hi there

I have been trying to back-up a single file which is larger than 2GB. It
seems however that retrospect does not support this feature (according to
tech support). Does anybody have any ideer to how I might get this file on
tape.

I'm currently running.

Retrospect 4.3 and ADK 1.8 on a MacOS 9 server (9300/200) connected to a
AIT 35/70 GB .

kind regards,
TSM/Jesper Greve
