RE: [scifinoir2] Enterprise episode Terra Prime

Right,
he appeared in the OS episode "The Savage Curtain", where beings on a planet of
lava recreate figures from history that represent good and evil. They then make
the two sides fight. The aliens had no real concept of good and evil, and
wanted to know which was stronger and how they differed. On the "good" team were
Kirk, Spock, Surak (the father of Vulcan Logic), and Abraham Lincoln! The "evil"
gang included father of the Klingon Empire Kahless, Genghis Khan, some
creepy-looking alien lady who had experimented on her people, and Colonel Green,
who had led agenocidal campaign on Earth.

Somewhere, on some rogue website, I recall spotting a blurb spoiler
about "Enterprise" and the final eps that suggested that Weller would be
playing Colonel Green. I was all ready for that, figuring how great Green's

the Federation. One more letdown in a long string of

  Well, I wish I
could say I liked the second episode better, but nope. I can't quite put
my finger on it, but it just didn't move me. It seemed at once rushed,
unengaging, and dull. Somehow Peter Weller's villainous xenophobe failed
to resonate, coming off more as an irritant bigot than a threat to
galactic peace. Certainly he didn't paint the portrait of a man
who'dhoped to be mentioned in the same breath as the infamous
Colonel Green. The whole plot device with him taking over the Mars
Virtiron Array as a terroristic threat wasn't very exciting either.
The sub-standard plot and action made me realize that the focus was
shifted to the wrong thing. Here we had an upcoming major peace
conference, Terra Prime's threatening to destroy Starfleet Command, yet
there was very little coverage of things on Earth, on the reactions of the
delegates, media coverage of the impending disaster. Rather than
time spent on the posturing Weller and his bald, black racist flunkies, or
on sub-standard FX, I'd like to have seen more focus on Earth itself. It
would have been nice to see the delegates as they wrestled with the
significance of the still-healthy racist element on Earth. I still have
issues with the Black racist sidekicks used as an ironic
  commentary.
  The one thing
that did resonate was the storyline around Elizabeth, Trip and T'Pol's
baby. To see him crying at the end, T'Pol's look and anguish, and their
holding hands--well, that was powerful. The comment that the delegates
wanted to attend her ceremony was a nice touch too.

  Overall I'd
just rate it as an average show that again reminded me of a season one
  episode. "Excuse me while I

Yep, none other than Rex "You Take My Breath Away" Smith (even after twenty-plus years, that song's worth a laugh). I won't try to defend Viper. I just liked it. As for "Stingray", the closest to an ending I remember was an ep in which his past came back to almost bite him on the can. He almost had to give up his "favor-for-a-favor" gig, if not for one of his favors being a Government big-wig who stepped in long enough to let him slip away. Therewere two more eps before the show ended, if I remember right. Oh, and "Riptide"! Two pretty boys who would've been LOST without a geek. The way the world REALLY works.Keith Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Street Hawk's star was former pop idol and broadway star ("Pirates of Penzance") Rex Smith, wasn't it? I never got Viper. Seemed kinda low-rent to me. Stingray was definitely cool. I remember one show when the star was arrested and printed. His prints were sent off for matching and he kept telling the arresting officer "You're wasting your time". The officer felt he had the guy, until the results came back: a fax showing a young Black man! Never did figure out his story, and how did the show end?
Gotta tell you, that was another Stephen J. Cannell show, and he had a long run of good ones, from 21 Jump Street to Riptide to Hunter to (yes, even) A-Team.

Anything BUT. Street Hawk didn't do much for me, but Stingray was even cooler to me than The Equalizer, which I loved. Possibly the idea that Stingray might have some obscure government connection held some interest for a budding conspiracy theorist. Viper, I hadevery epon video, got rid of them only because I began to convert my video collection to DVD and ran into a little thing called unemployment a few weeks in.Keith Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

It was shows that I think were from Universal. At any rate, the Action Pack music would play and they'd show scenes from all the above shows. Usually it'd air on Saturdays and Sundays, and there'd be 2 -3 hours of series in the group. Even after the other shows were all cancelled, Hercules and Xena would still often be introduced as part of the Action Pack. I used to love that gimmick even if all the shows weren't that great. It was just the ability to watch a block of scifi on Saturday
 afternoons that I loved...

"Hard Time on Planet Earth". How CAN anyone forget that? What did you think about "Time Trax", if I haven't asked before? I liked "Space:1999" as well, but the budding scientist in me couldn't quite get around the idea of the Moon being blown out of Earth orbit because of excess nuclear waste (a gift of the anti-nuke lobby, I'll assume). Sure, thanks. Give me today to clean it up a bit. My posts here tend to be a bit stream-of-consciousness. It definitely had the weak feeling of BB stuff from the first season. That's why I'm stunned they ran with it. What did he do, give up? Run out of steam? It deserved better than some half-ass script fetched from a drawer whose tone completely jarred with the recent excellence.

Can we post this review on the new site? It is right on point. But you should not be surprised. The actress that plays T'Pol said she hated it and Berman said he wrote it a few years ago.It was very Bermanesque. How they can keep him in charge of the franchise is beyond me.

First an intro statement, then onto specific impresions. No spoilers yet...

I expected to come to the end of the Star Trek universe on TV with sadness and grief. For three decades I've watched everything Trek. I have the movies on DVD, several novels (including of the animated series), Tech Manuals and Klingon language labs on CD. I've never gone a year since the '70s without enjoying some Trek, whether reruns or first runs of the four latest series. I have seen every movie on opening weekend, and have supported all of them--even dreck like "The Final Frontier"--in light of the greater need to keep The Franchise running. Even when I left for a while when Voyager failed to hold my attention, I came back, like a son too long gone from his family. And now, even now, I have supported this last show, "Enterprise", when millions of fans have abandoned it in disgust and disappointment. But, fool that I am, I stayed the course. I am in all ways and definitions of the word, a
"Trekkie" (*NEVER* a trying-to-appeal-to-the-mainstream "Trekker"!) It's good to say that after three-and-a-half years of mostly sub-par episodes, my patience and loyalty were rewarded with very good episodes in this last season. All that is, except for tonight...

Now the spoilers and the rant...

WTF? I really, really, *REALLY* thought I was looking at a joke show tonight. Whose freakin' idea was it to use Riker and Troi in this final show? They wasted time that would have been better spent on plot development. What was the logic in Riker having to participate in a holo recreation of Enterprise's last mission. What, he had to go back two hundred years to get inspiration for how to tell some deep, dark secret to Picard? i thought everything to be known about the Pegasus Incident had been revealed back on the TNG? Even if not, again Isay, why did he have to relive Enterprise history in order to 'fess up? That was so weak it was laughable. I kept expecting a more compelling justification for Riker and Troi to be there, but nope.No offense against the actors, but the show was so weak I actually had time to notice that Marina Sirtis' British accent was way more pronounced than it was on
TNG. I guess she hasn't had much experience hiding it in recent years. Examining Riker, note he's still a first officer on Enterprise, and, from the way he and Troi acted, they're not married yet. As the movies clearly established Riker and Troi are married and Will has his own command. That means they went back in time (in terms of TNG) to craft this tale?? Again, why? Why bring up a relatively obscure time like the Pegasus incident as a way to say farewell to Enterprise? I like Frakes and Sirtis, but there appearance added nothing here. Crap!Q would have been more welcome.

Now, on to Archer and company. Speaking of weak, how lame was it to bring backShran for this contrived rescue mission? He justhappens to show up while Archer's on the way to Earth, and needs help with a certain-death rescue of his daughter? If I weren't so dismayed at the horrible writing I'd have been laughing my ass off at the ludicrous plot. Further, it seems to me a bunch of folks were sitting around one day and said, "Hey, let's kill someone. let's throw a dart to see who dies. It's Trip!" What was up with that suicide? Ten years of defeating

[scifinoir2] [OT] Dave Chappelle: The Interview

On the Beach With Dave Chappelle

In South Africa, TIME's Simon Robinson talks with the comic about his
sudden disappearance from Chappelle's Show

Posted Sunday, May. 15, 2005

In this week's TIME, Christopher John Farley reveals why Dave Chappelle
decided to leave his hit show and what he's been up to since he
disappeared to South Africa two weeks ago. Last Friday night, TIME
Johannesburg bureau chief Simon Robinson met with the comic at uShaka
Marine World on the beach in the South African port of Durban. In a ninety
minute conversation, Chappelle was eager to set the record straight on why
he suddenly left the U.S. and what he's doing in South Africa. Here's
Robinson's account:

Dave Chappelle shows up to our interview in a red t-shirt, blue jeans and
shiny white sneakers. He lopes around in his usual style, pacing a lot,
but does not seem like a man struggling to speak or to order his thoughts
at all. He's lucid and thoughtful and a couple of times asks me to give
him some time to think about answers. He concedes that he is dealing with
a lot of issues and mentions that he had consulted a psychiatrist about a
week ago for a forty minute session. He is also quite fastidious about
keeping his new sneakers clean and stops at least twice to wipe smudges
off their toes.

The first thing Chappelle wants is to dispel rumors - that he's got a drug
problem, that he's checked into a mental institution in Durban - that have
been flying around the U.S. for the past week. He says he is staying with
a friend, Salim Domar, and not in a mental institution, as has been widely
reported in America. Chappelle says he is in South Africa to find a quiet
place for a while. Let me tell you the things I can do here which I
can't at home: think, eat, sleep, laugh. I'm an introspective dude. I
enjoy my own thoughts sometimes. And I've been doing a lot of thinking
here.

The picture he paints-and it seems a fairly honest and frank assessment -
is of someone struggling to come to terms with a new position and power
who's still figuring out how to come to grips with how people around him
are reacting to the $50 million deal he signed last year with Comedy
Central. Without naming specific characters, he seems to blame both some
of his inner circle (not his family) and himself for the stresses created
by last year's deal.

There were things that overwhelmed me, he says. But not in the way that
people are saying. I haven't spent any of the money. All that stuff about
partying and taking crack is not true. Why do I live on a farm in Ohio? To
support my partying lifestyle?

The problems, he says, started with his inner circle. If you don't have
the right people around you and you're moving at a million miles an hour
you can lose yourself, he says. Everyone around me says, 'You're a
genius!'; 'You're great!'; 'That's your voice!' But I'm not sure that
they're right. And he stresses that Comedy Central was not part of the
problem and put no more than normal television restrictions on what he
could do.

You got to be careful of the company you keep, Chappelle says. It's
hard to know how much to say. One of the things that happens when people
make the leap from a certain amount of money to tens of millions of
dollars is that the people around you dramatically change.

During my ascent, I've seen other people go through that wall to become
really big. They always said that fame didn't change them but that it
changes the people around them. You always hear that but you never really
understand it. But now that I'm there that makes a lot of sense and I'm
learning what that means. You have to have people around you that you can
trust and aren't just out for a meal ticket.

The breakdown in trust within his inner circle seems to have led him to
question the material they were producing. He seems obsessed with making
sure the material is good and honest and something that he will be proud.
I want to make sure I'm dancing and not shuffling, he says. What ever
decisions I make right now I'm going to have live with. Your soul is
priceless. The first two seasons of his show had a real spirit to them,
he says. I want to make sure whatever I do has spirit.

But Chappelle also says that he must share the blame for the stalled third
season. I'm admittedly a human being, he says. I'm a difficult kind of
dude. His earlier walkout during shooting had a little psychological
element to it. I have trust issues, things like that. I saw some stuff in
myself that I just didn't dig. It's like when I brought a girl home to my
mom and it looked as if my mom really didn't like this girl. And she told
me, 'I like her just fine. I just don't like you around her.' That's how I
feel in this situation. There were some things about myself that I didn't
like. People got to take inventory

It sounds to me like he reconized that the sudden fame was about to overtake him and pulled the 'ejection' chute. Despite the havoc it'll probally do to his career I think he was right in doing it.

Viper. I just liked it. As for "Stingray", the closest to an ending I

some quotes from some poems of mine that were based on fairy tales. Don't know
how fairy tales fit into the specfic theme. -C

Tell us, Sir Knight, they asked, why you brought this heathen woman to
us. We see by your clothing that you have come from fighting in Palestine. We
know you are as holy a man as any of us. Therefore tell us, is this woman a
slave of yours, a prize earned in your many battles? Or is she some princess?
For dark though she be, she is beautiful to look upon. Was she given to you as
booty by some great king? - Carole McDonnell, "Black is the color of my true
love's hair" Published in Fantastic Visions III Edited by William Horner

"For we are Gods children and this woman is a dark heathen, without
knowledge of God and with no power to understand spiritual matters were they
explained to her, for far be those heathenish people from salvation or even good
sense. It is obvious to me that no true friendship can ever grow between such a
great lord and such a woman." Carole McDonnell, "Black is the color of my true
love's hair"Published in Fantastic Visions III Edited by William
Horner

The woman from beyond the Two Hills continued, Already the children
of our village no longer dance to the light at our festivals. They insist on
Sound-dances, preferring music to light. They hide their natures, clans, and
status. They do not wear their clan colors. Some of our marriageable young
girls refuse to wear the courtship tassels. They refuse to give the world
knowledge of themselves. Its a perverse game they play. Yesterday, at the
beginning of the Mother-Infant Festival, some children insisted on
mouth-singing, even though their parents could not understand a word they
said. And when they talk, they hide their conversations, imitating
the mouth-speakers' mouth-to-ears talk, what the Earthers call this she
finger-spelled in English-- whispers. - Carole McDonnell "Lingua Franca"

There are some women who truly feel themselves to be ideal. There
are some women who cannot see their own fraud. There are some women who have
crooked measuring sticks. This poem is not for them.We know all too well

I dont think I can adequately describe the feeling of intimacy and

We dont see a lot of mixed couples around here, and were not like some of
the other states in the Confederate United Republic. Its not like theyre gonna
get killed or lynched or nothing. But its tough just the same. And although
its weird enough that theyre an interracial couple, it seems to me that
theyre arguing about something bigger than merely coming into this cafe. I
dont know any Blacks. You got to go to Laramie, or Cheyenne to see them. But I
watch Cosby when its on. The Confederacy aint as bad as the folks in Columbia
might think. Sure everyones segregated, but its all equal and the Platte
County school district is pretty good about African-American History Month. --

And you are not weak or lacking in morals?I am not. I have
told you that I am a reinforced wall. No door of mine is opened to you. Only my

Gray Wolf stooped by the waters edge washing Davids blood from his knife.

Jackson doesn't die nearly as much as the great Charleston Heston, who has more melodramatic death scenes than anybody I know of. Remember "Beneath the Planet of the Apes"? Death. "The Omega Man"? Died, and not just died, but if you saw that movie, he died in a fountain, his blood pooled at his feet, arms and legs outstretched, in nothing so much as a Crucifix-like figure.

[scifinoir2] Re: SciFiNoir Needs Your Favorite Quotes

2005-05-15 Thread md_moore42
(It's the first line that I usually use.)

The best thing for being sad is to learn something. That is the only
thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your
anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder in
your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about
you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the
sewers of baser minds.

There is only one thing for it then - to learn. Learn why the world
wags and what wags it. That is the only thing the mind can never
exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust
and never dream of regretting. Look at what a lot of things there are
to learn ... astronomy in a lifetime, natural history in three,
literature in six. And then, after you have exhausted a million
lifetimes in biology and medicine and theo-criticism and geography and
history and economics - why, then you can start to make a cartwheel
out of the appropriate wood, or spend fifty years learning to begin to
learn to beat your adversary and fencing. After that you can start on
mathematics, until it is time to learn to plow.
