I just took it matter o' factly. I can't say however that I go into bookstores all that often, especially the big chain bookstores. As a thirty something year old black male, who is also a grad student, I have probably visited a big chain bookstore like BN about 4 times this year. I just don't like them. I prefer to order books online when possible. And if I don't spend any time in a bookstore beyond my purchase. If I'm going to read, I head to a local coffee shop or the like. Perhaps a better barometer of what this article is getting at (but never actually touches), aren't big chain bookstores. For instance I nearly *always* see black males of varied ages in public libraries. Usually these are libraries located in black communities. If the branch is not in a black community, I stand a lesser chance of seeing blacks (men or women) there. I do however always see a significant amount of black people at the central branch of a library, as they tend to draw just about everyone. Of course, my experiences are probably as non-scientific and random as is the writer of this post---so it may mean absolutely nothing, though I find the libraries telling. I would wager I see more black women/young women of late in bookstores, as there are a high amount of so-called urban books which is popular among that demographic, at the unfortunate expense of any other form of black literature. Perhaps if there were books that appealed more to black males (and hopefully not more urban fiction), more would enter. But given my library experience, it could be that black males who are reading more prefer to check out a book than pay the $8.99+ I do when I want to pick up the latest Robert Jordan (RIP) paperback. There's another learn-something-new-every-day moment. This article speaks of his almost-middle European attitude toward the world. Apparently, that was good enough to fool me, because I would've sworn that he *was* British. I remember his work fondly, because it was one f the few SF authors that were available in the pathetically-stocked library in the town where I grew up. Another great loss to SF. ravenadal [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: www.chicagotribune.com/services/newspaper/printedition/wednesday/metro/chi-hed-budrys-11-jun11,0,1972869.story chicagotribune.com Algis Budrys 1931 ~ 2008 Tapped human side of science fiction By Trevor Jensen Tribune reporter June 11, 2008 Algis Budrys wrote deeply intellectual science fiction that grappled with the motives behind human behavior, and he taught the craft of writing to hundreds of students through seminars and workshops. Mr. Budrys, 77, died of metastatic malignant melanoma Monday, June 9, at his Evanston home, said his son David. Known to friends as A.J., Mr. Budrys' books, particularly 1960's Rogue Moon and 1977's Michaelmas are highly regarded by critics and students of the genre. His work explored the way a person feels or develops, more than with wild space adventures, said his wife, Edna. A lot of his books are about identity, who we are and why do we do what we do, said Charles Brown, editor of the science fiction magazine Locus. The plot of Michaelmas touched on computer hacking and domination of human behavior by machines, which pretty much predicted a lot of what's going on today, Brown said. He was well ahead of his time. He had an interesting, almost middle-European attitude toward the world. He spent more time thinking about what could go wrong than what might go right, said Frederik Pohl, an acclaimed science fiction writer who at various times was Mr. Budrys' agent and editor. Mr. Budrys was born in the former Konigsberg, a city then in East Prussia, where his father was stationed as a Lithuanian diplomat. The rise of Adolf HitlerMr. Budrys' wife said he never forgot seeing the German leader standing up in an open car as it roared through a crowdled the family to relocate to Paris, then New York City. At 6, Mr. Budrys discovered science fiction in the funny pages of the city's newspapers, despite his parents' order that he not read such strange material. But he was hooked, and by 9 was turning out his own stories. Mr. Budrys attended the University of Miami and Columbia University in New York, dropping out not long after selling his first story to a science fiction magazine. He decided he knew more than his teachers, his wife said. They married in 1954 in a ceremony attended by writers including Isaac Asimov, relatives said. He was a productive writer early in his career who used pen names to cover that he often had multiple stories in publications such as Astounding Science Fiction, Galaxy and If. Like many writers, though, he eventually needed a day job. In 1961, he moved to Evanston to work as an editor with Regency Books. He later held editing positions with Playboy Press. From 1969 to 1974, he was a public relations account manager in charge of International Truck for Young Rubicam. That job got him involved with four-wheel-drive truck racing. He also was a bicycle mechanic, building his own bikes with top-end French and Italian components. That hobby led to a book, Bicycles: How They Work and How to Fix Them. Such down-to-earth hobbies flew in the face of the science fiction stereotype. He was not geeky, his son said. Mr. Budrys' writing output slowed during the years, in part because he was a deliberate writerhe took forever sometimes, his wife saidand because he became more involved in teaching and working with L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future Program. He was for many years the coordinating judge of that program for young writers, which he insisted distance itself from Scientology, a practice to which he did not subscribe, his son said. Mr. Budrys' teaching schedule took him to workshops at many colleges and universities, including Harvard in Massachusetts and Pepperdine in California. He also was a busy reviewer of science fiction, and a collection of his critical work was published as Benchmarks. Other survivors include three more sons, Jeffrey, Steven and Timothy; and two grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Donnellan Family Funeral Home, 10045 Skokie Blvd., Skokie. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Blow-up dolls, shop mannequins and dogs dressed up as children have all been used to try and justify driving in lanes where vehicles are required to have at least three occupants. There were some odd people that tried these antics, North Shore city council traffic safety manager Andre Dannhauser told Reuters. Drivers caught trying to beat the system are fined NZ$150 ($114). Enforcement officers taking pictures of offending cars in transit lanes have been treated to a wide range of excuses from caught-out motorists, Dannhauser said. The most common one is the imaginary passengers they claim we couldn't see because they were so small, Dannhauser said. For a while some enterprising students charged a small fee to get driven past the enforcement officers, before running back up the road to repeat the trick. The money they generated from that was not enough to pay for the beer for the thirst they generated, Dannhauser said. [scifinoir2] Hulk Smash! Hulk Hero!
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/text/2004473568_hulkinterview13.html Friday, June 13, 2008 - Page updated at 12:00 a.m. Director's goal with new Hulk: less analysis, more smash By Glenn Whipp Los Angeles Daily News When French filmmaker Louis Leterrier was meeting with Marvel Studios about making a new movie version of The Incredible Hulk, he heard two things over and over again. Hulk smash! Hulk hero! Even after Leterrier got the job and was shooting the movie, he had those same two things drilled into his head any time a producer showed up on set. Hulk smash! Hulk hero! Again and again and again. The producers, they're so afraid of their own shadow, Leterrier says, laughing. They're so afraid of Ang Lee's 'Hulk.' They wish they had the 'Men in Black' zapper to erase people's memory of that movie. The Incredible Hulk, which arrived in theaters late last night, is basically a do-over of Lee's 2003 Hulk, quite possibly the least-liked comic-book movie in history. Is it more despised than The Fantastic Four? Sure. It's easy to pile on that movie or a toss-off like Elektra. Nobody expected much from either. But The Hulk combined a beloved character with an A-list filmmaker. Hopes were high. But Lee delivered a 140-minute movie that emphasized psychology over smashing, a film that Salon reviewer Charles Taylor described as a comic-book movie that National Public Radio listeners can be proud to take their kids to see. I know a lot of people have various opinions of Ang Lee's 'Hulk,' says Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. What most people agree on is that when the Hulk was around and was smashing, people liked it. But there wasn't enough of that. The movie went too far afield in the other direction. Hence: Hulk smash. Hulk hero. In Leterrier's Saturday-matinee-style Hulk, Bruce Banner's back story is dispensed with over the opening credits. We see the scientist undergoing an experiment that goes awry. We see carnage. We see Banner now played by Edward Norton (it was Eric Bana in the first) on the run. And 20 minutes into the movie, we see the mean, green monster in all his raging glory. The Hulk is a fugitive story. Lee already made the origin film, and Leterrier, director of the Transporter movies, says he didn't want to offend people who love Ang's movie by serving the same dish warmed over. I'm actually embracing Ang's movie, he adds. I love it. It's beautiful. It's poetic. Yes, it's a little contrary to what people's expectations are for a superhero movie. But I don't care. Ang is a great filmmaker. Leterrier's Hulk is nearly a half-hour shorter, heavier on the action and lighter on the character beats. If audiences respond to his movie more than they did Lee's, Leterrier would be happy to return for another round. They have 40 years of comic books, he says. There's no shortage of material.
Re: [scifinoir2] FW: [AFAMHED] Observation: No black boys in bookstores
They are in the comic book stores. They are at the video game stores. They are online. They are getting their haircut. Bookstore chains are so busy being newsstands and coffee shops and music stores that they have missed the whole point. I rarely buy books in a bookstore. I know what I want and Amazon all day. (Shame on me, I need to find and support a Black online vendor) When we had the comic book store, most of my customers were male. Half of them were Black. Now that it's gone, when I go to the nearest shop, I see LOTS of young Black men there. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, you can find 10 brothers between the ages of 8 and 50 in the course of an hour -- easily. My son and I REGULARLY hit the comic book store. We also hit up a store that specializes in books and toys for home schooled kids. He isn't home-schooled, but the books are enjoyable and give him an advantage in Kindergarten. (June 10) - When school officials in Rock Hill, South Carolina, tell graduation ceremony crowds to hold their applause until the end, they mean it -- Police arrested seven people after they were accused of loud cheering during the ceremonies. Six people at Fort Mill High School 's graduation were charged Saturday and a seventh at the graduation for York Comprehensive High School was charged Friday with disorderly conduct, authorities said. Police said the seven yelled after students' names were called. I just thought they were going to escort me out, Jonathan Orr told The Herald of Rock Hill. I had no idea they were going to put andcuffs on me and take me to jail. Orr, 21, spent two hours in jail after he was arrested when he yelled for his cousin at York 's commencement at the Winthrop University Coliseum. Rock Hill police began patrolling commencements several years ago at the request of school districts who complained of increasing disruption. Those attending graduations are told they can be prosecuted for bad behavior and letters are sent home with students, said Rock Hill police spokesman Lt. Jerry Waldrop. All the cases, except for one that includes a resisting arrest charge, will be handled in city court and are punishable by a maximum of 30 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. Orr said he thinks people should be allowed to cheer. For some people, it might be the only member of their family to graduate high school, and it was like a funeral in there, Orr said. William Massey, 19, was arrested but said he plans to fight the charge. He said he simply clapped and gave a little whoop when his fiancee's name was called. Massey said there were warnings before the ceremony but none that said he could be arrested. He said not everyone who cheered was arrested. There's a lot more people that did it than six or seven, said Massey, who graduated from Fort Mill last year. Fort Mill Principal Dee Christopher says school officials don't ask that offenders be arrested but that he plans to keep a police presence at future graduation ceremonies. We think it's important for every graduate's name to be heard and for every person in the arena to be able to see that student cross the stage. ... That's why we have disruptive guests removed, he said. Last year in Galesburg , Illinois , five students were denied diplomas from the city's lone public high school after enthusiastic friends or family members cheered for them during commencement. Students could get their diplomas after completing eight hours of public service for the school district. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I'm guilty of the Amazon buy as well. They have almost everything, tons of reviews and they are usually the cheapest. It's easier. I tend to only get impulse buys at Afrocentric book stores. We were discussing her recent prom date and another young man with whom she had gone on a few dates. We both concluded that they were not young men that she could see herself with in a serious relationship. Then, she said something that surprised me, but made me feel good. She said, My ideal guy is someone I would meet in a bookstore. I hadn't realized that all of those years of taking her to bookstores since she was old enough to walk had such an impact on her. She plans to study creative writing and art in college starting this fall. Then she said, Dad, think about it. Have we ever seen a black male in a bookstore, a child or teenager? I thought about it for a few moments. I know I used to say to her over the years that I wish I saw more black kids in bookstores with their parents. We always noted the Asians and white families and could not help but wonder where were the kids that looked like her. So I thought long and hard and, with no exaggeration, I can say after over 15 years of Borders and Barnes Noble trips, I cannot recall ever seeing a black male child in anyone of them. We have seen young black girls on occasion. We always see the college-age black females. But never black males. I can say that there are black male adults-some do-it-yourselfers and presumably grad students--occasionally reading at one of the areas where snacks are served. But my daughter and I both agreed that we cannot recall a black male child or teen in any of the many bookstores we have visited. And I have been in stores from coast to coast, north and south. Girls? Yes. Boys? It's both sad and frightening. I mentioned this to a few colleagues and they say that they have made similar observations-and they offered their reasons for this phenomenon. I didn't want to discuss reasons. I am still trying to wrap my brain around my own experience, because I am concerned about how this has affected my daughter. Is my experience unique (I sure hope so!), or has anyone here had the same experience? As most of you know, i have been teaching English at Jordan High School (Watts) for the past two years. In my two years here, i have had several run-ins with administration, and now the latest - i was informed last month by the principal that he will not renew my contract for the next school year. In LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified School District) terms, a non-renewal of contract equals i've been fired. i'm not being transferred, i'm simply no longer able to work in LAUSD. The good news, though, is that i have only been given verbal notification, but have not yet received anything in writing. i have until June 30th to pressure the principal into reversing this decision. i'm asking for your support not because i'm facing losing my job, but because it sets a dangerous precedent for progressive / critical educators. i am not being fired because i have failed to teach the state standards (none of my evaluations negate the fact am teaching to the standards). i am being fired because i am trying to ensure that my curriculum is relevant to my students' daily lived experiences, and in the process, create a space for them to be critical of Eurocentric society and curricula that only serve to reinforce their dehumynization, subjugation, and oppression. Many of you have been forwarding messages about the Arizona bill that seeks to end Raza Studies and MEChA, and while my situation is not as large scale, it is still an attack on the quality, culturally-relevant education Students of Color deserve. i have been harassed by administration since last school year for my alleged encouragement of militancy among students. Last year there was a group of students, called the Watts Student Union, who began organizing themselves and created a list of demands they presented to the school and district. The administration did not think students were capable (smart enough?) of organizing themselves and articulating their demands on their own, so another colleague and i were accused of being the real masterminds behind their work. This year, administration has continued their vendetta against me. i have been observed in the classroom and evaluated by administration over a dozen times (almost twice a month) this school year, whereas in comparison, most teachers are observed and evaluated 1-3 times per school year. The evaluations claim that i am creating militancy within students, promoting my personal political beliefs, and presenting a biased view of the curriculum. It has also been implied that i have been teaching students how to protest. Three weeks ago, things began escalating when i was again observed, and in his evaluation, the administrator accused me of brainwashing my students and forcing extremist views on them. The class had been reading a 3-page excerpt of the Autobiography of Malcolm X (an LAUSD-approved text, of which we have several class sets in our school bookroom), in which Malcolm describes the first time he conked his hair. Since then, i have been observed and evaluated two additional times (which makes a total of three times in as many weeks), and during one of those observations, an administrator sat in my class for 45 minutes and proceeded to interrogate me about the lesson. When i showed him the textbook from which the lesson was directly taken, he remained unsatisfied and continued to question me about it. Both students and an aide who was present told me afterwards that they felt extremely uncomfortable with his behavior. It is important for me to point all of this out because while there has been much talk of teachers being laid off due to the impending budget cuts, my dismissal has nothing to do with budget cuts. My contract is being terminated because according to the principal, i am indoctrinating students with anti-Semitism and Afrocentrism. The anti-Semitism accusation comes solely from the fact that i have an Intifada poster hanging in my classroom (a symbol of support for a free Palestine), and the Afrocentrism accusation comes from the fact my culturally-relevant curriculum reflects the demographics of my students, though i am surprised i am not being accused of Raza-centrism as well. My students have already begun to organize themselves and their parents. Several other teachers have also expressed their support and are now collecting signatures for a petition to renew my contract. The Association of Raza Educators (ARE) is also in full solidarity

[scifinoir2] FW: Hulk lines enormous over Happening lines
From: CINQUE [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 13, 2008 11:55 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; don polite; Gabriel, Dexter; JohnScott Lucas; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Kenny Cash; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Hulk lines enormous over Happening lines Hulk, Shyamalan seek second chance at the movies Thursday June 12 6:04 PM ET This weekend's lineup at the U.S. box office might well be called a showdown between two Hollywood second-chances -- a remake of a superhero flop and a new film from an acclaimed director whose last movie bombed. But if early reviews are any indication, the hands-down favorite to dominate megaplexes heading into the seventh week of the lucrative summer movie season is The Incredible Hulk, a revival of the oversized green brute Marvel Studios first brought to theaters in 2003. Critics say the new version, emphasizing action over introspection, is markedly superior to the brooding Hulk forerunner that got off to a strong commercial start but quickly fizzled as comic book fans found it lacking. Reviews are less than kind to the only other wide release this coming weekend, The Happening, the first offering from filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan since his Lady in the Water drew critical sneers and sputtered at box offices in 2006. Still, industry watchers say Shyamalan, whose 1999 sleeper hit The Sixth Sense made him a filmmaking sensation, will likely give the Hulk a run for his money with his latest thriller about the outbreak of a mysterious plague. There's a lot of interest in this weekend because these two films have a lot to prove for very different reasons, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box office tracking service Media By Numbers. Much is at stake for Marvel, which is seeking to build on the recent blockbuster success of Iron Man with what it calls a re-boot of another one of its most popular superhero characters, the Hulk. BIG BUCKS AT STAKE The movie is believed to have cost upward of $150 million to make with a marketing budget approaching $100 million. And the focus has been differentiating this film from the first, said Adam Fogelson, Universal's head of marketing. It was about knowing ... that there would be many eyebrows raised and many questions asked about why you would make a sequel to a movie that many people didn't like, he said. Like the original directed by Ang Lee, the new incarnation from French filmmaker Louis Leterrier mixes a computer-animated Hulk with real actors playing other characters. Edward Norton stars as the former scientist Bruce Banner who turns into the green man-beast whenever he loses his temper. Critics say the new film stays truer to the comic book character and to the 1970s hit TV series it spawned, favoring adventure over psychological conflict. Hulk marks only the second fully self-financed production from Marvel Studios, which paid General Electric Co's Universal Pictures a fee to market and distribute the film. Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc, released Iron Man for Marvel. The first Hulk, a Marvel co-production with Universal, grossed a hefty $62 million domestically its first weekend but dropped off quickly after that. Dergarabedian said the remake should top the original, making it likely to beat The Happening, from News Corp's 20th Century Fox, as the No. 1 film this weekend. Shyamalan's five previous wide-release films grossed opening weekend tallies ranging from $18 million for Lady in the Water two years ago to $60 million for Signs in 2002. But Happening is his first to receive an R-rating in the United States, which limits admissions to moviegoers 17 and older unless accompanied by an adult. Still, Dergarabedian said no one should count Shyamalan out, given the curiosity that usually accompanies his work. [scifinoir2] The Credible Hulk
www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/chi-0613-universal-incredible- hulk-review,0,2454052.story chicagotribune.com MOVIE REVIEW 'The Incredible Hulk' stars Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth and William Hurt Rating: 3 stars (good) By Michael Phillips Tribune critic June 13, 2008 What do you know? A credible Hulk. Incredible overstates it, but The Incredible Hulk finds a viable way to retell an old Jekyll and Hyde story, dating back to the early 1960s and a Cold War that inspired its share of unruly Marvel Comics misfits. The film establishes a tone and the dramatic stakes necessary to support that story. In the realm of cinematic superheroism, that's saying something. And in its noisy Transformers-mayhem fashion, the movie's pretty exciting. Five years ago director Ang Lee's brooding, melancholy Hulk played in theaters to an indifferent mass audience. Five years? Nobody remakes a comic-book superhero project that soon. Yet this new version, directed by Louis Leterrier, plays the story for keeps without putting anyone on the couch, while heaping on the crushing, body-slamming death matches the average 13-year-old sociopath will lap up like Gatorade. Speaking as a 47-year-old who wasn't that into the Hulk when he was 13 (I was too busy with Proust and Dirty Mary Crazy Larry), I was pleasantly surprised by the viability of the latest iteration, starring Edward Norton as the man with the gamma ray eyes and the rage issues. Norton, who reportedly retooled Zak Penn's screenplay, may be shown in silent, Christlike suffering once too often--this is assuming Jesus was green and bulgy; some theologians disagree--but like Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man, Norton's the right idiosyncratic choice for this kind of project. The film flies through the back-story in its opening credits. Fleeting, chaotic images of scientist Bruce Banner (Norton) undergoing experimental gamma-ray treatment reveal a fiasco. Banner believes the treatments will be for the Greater Good, but they're being conducted on behalf of Evil, in the form of a secret U.S. military weapons project. Having tasted blood and big-boy tantrums as the Hulk, Banner goes undercover, a fugitive from justice. The story proper begins with Banner down in Rio, hiding out from the military brass among the throngs on the hillsides, working on his anger-management techniques, working at a bottling plant. Why Rio? Because Rio is a terrific locale for a chase, with Banner leaping from rooftop to rooftop, pursued by William Hurt's Gen. Ross and his special-op fighters. Like Norton, Tim Roth isn't a Central Casting choice for a comic-book movie. The British actor plays Emil Blonsky, tool of the U.S. military (he was a KGB weasel in 1967, when Marvel introduced him) who becomes The Abomination, foe of Hulk and ordinary citizen alike. I find Roth to be a predictable ham in a lot of pictures, but sometimes a new context frees up an actor to try other things, and in The Incredible Hulk Roth works more effectively than he has in years. The two most elaborate action sequences take up a good chunk of the running time. One pits Banner/Hulk against the ops on a university campus. The other--the film's climax--has Banner willingly transforming into the Hulk in order to vanquish the Abomination, who's stompin' at the Savoy, metaphorically speaking, as he trashes half of Harlem. Leterrier, who brought 10 tons of greasy flashy style to Transporter 2, may be a sap for the sudden slow-mo change-up. But until the last 20 minutes, which stumble around in an attempt to set up a sequel, The Incredible Hulk keeps slamming everything forward, satisfyingly. Two points about the soundtrack. One: The volume levels of the WHAM KRRRAAANGGG! BMMPH! effects are best described as ouch! Two: The Incredible Hulk features the dullest musical score of the year. Perhaps these two factors cancel each other out. At any rate, Norton is an interesting enough actor to flesh out Banner's Jekyll-and-Hyde dilemma. I have no idea how much the actor meddled with the script. But it works. As for Liv Tyler, the general's daughter and Banner's ex, well ... she's OK. She never really does enough one way or the other to tip a film in any direction. Primarily, opposite the thin-lipped Norton, she brings enough of her own lip to share close-ups with all four of the Fantastic Four, let alone one green giant with a blackout temper and stretchy pants for all occasions. Actually, the comment about the Doctor dating his daughter came from the list. It drew an ewww from me also. I thought that the actress was a bit young, but upon a closer look she is playing younger than she actually is. It wouldn't be the first Doctor Who romance started between starring roles. The hardcore fan bases for these shows aren't averse to spending hours poring over the similarities the programs share, and the Internet is a handy enabler for these overlapping obsessions. But there seemed to be more coincidences than usual as both dramas wrapped up their most recent batch of episodes (Battlestar has its mid-season finale on Sci Fi June 13 and airs 10 more episodes, probably in 2009, before it ends for good; Lost just concluded its fourth season on ABC and resumes in January. Pictured at left; Francois Chau as Lost's Dr. Edgar Halliwax; at right, Battlestar's Lucy Lawless, Tricia Helfer and Grace Park). The parallels are uncanny. On both shows, people see visions. Mystery babies appear to hold many answers. The boxing and unboxing of key characters are crucial plot points. So am I alone in wondering if Ben Linus might be the final Cylon, or in speculating about the possibility of a polar bear hidden away in the Galactica fleet? Or have I just spent too many late nights watching and rewatching these delightfully convoluted dramas? Hmmm .. In any case, the parallels below are mostly drawn from the most recent seasons of each show. As always, weigh in with your own thoughts in the comment area. Box brouhaha Battlestar's D'Anna: Her unboxing, or revival from a form of Cylon death, was a key plot twist. Lost's John Locke/Jeremy Bentham: The appearance of this apparently dead character in Locke box was a key plot twist. Miracle baby Lost's Aaron: This indestructible baby seems to be part of some divine plan. Battlestar's Hera: This human-Cylon baby seems to be part of some divine plan. Wounded leader Lost's Jack: In recent episodes, this headstrong, controversial leader survived dangerous situations despite a Christ-like wound in his side. Battlestar's Baltar: In a recent episode, this headstrong, controversial leader survived dangerous situations despite a Christ-like wound in his side. Murderous, remorseless schemer Lost's Ben: This enigmatic island resident killed without remorse and always has a self-serving plan. Battlestar's Tory: This enigmatic Cylon killed without remorse and always has a self-serving plan. Group with a big secret Lost's Oceanic 6: They do all they can to prevent the world from knowing the truth about them. Battlestar's Final Four Cylons: They do all they can to prevent the fleet from knowing the truth about them. Shadowy figure Lost's Jacob: Who is this guy and what is he really up to? Battlestar's fifth Cylon: Who is this individual and what is he or she is really up to? Person seeing visions Battlestar's Laura Roslin: She sees people who aren't there, or are they? (Yep, I know, other people on the show have visions too.) Lost's Hurley: He sees people who aren't there, or are they? (Yep, I know, other people on the show have visions too.) Mysterious pregnancy Battlestar's Caprica Six: Allegedly Cylons can't get each other pregnant. Or can they? Saul Tigh seems to have done just that, because his secret lover, Caprica Six, has a toaster in the oven. Lost's Sun: Supposedly women can't stay pregnant on the mysterious Lost island. Or can they? Sun gave birth to a healthy baby after her island rescue. Powerful father-son duo Lost: A key story line involves the mysterious, possibly island- ruling Christian and his stubborn son, Jack, the leader of the Oceanic Six. Battlestar: A key story line involves the commanding, fleet-ruling William Adama and his stubborn son, Lee, the new president of the 12 colonies' Quorum. Big kaboom Battlestar: A human/Cylon team blew up the Cylons' crucial, life- regenerating Hub. Lost: A vengeful Keamy blew up the ill-fated, possibly life-saving freighter. Unhappy pet Lost: Bunnies. Battlestar: Centurions. Scary/freaky servant Lost: Richard Alpert Battlestar: The base ship's hybrid controller. Disappearance Lost: The island disappears. Battlestar: Gaeta's leg disappears. Disappointing revelation Lost: A frozen donkey wheel controls the island's powers. Um. Huh? Battlestar: Romo Lampkin has a dead cat in his gym bag. Um. Huh? Majorly awesome fight Battlestar: Tigh vs. Adama. Lost: Keamy vs. Sayid. Angry spouse left behind Battlestar's Chief Tyrol: The death of his spouse left him bitter and angry, plus he's got a big secret to hide. Lost's Sun: The death of her spouse left her bitter and angry, plus she's got a big secret to hide. Epic romance Lost: When Desmond and Penny reconnected and acknowledged their deep love, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Battlestar: When Adama and Roslin reconnected

www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/reviews/critics/chi-happening- review-0613jun13,0,5167184.story chicagotribune.com MOVIE REVIEW 'The Happening' is M. Night Shyamalan's latest Rating: 1 1/2 stars (poor-fair) By Michael Phillips Tribune critic In M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening, there's something in the air, or the parks, or something, that causes people to stop whatever they're doing, slide into a trance and commit suicide. That same cryptic something apparently also causes talented writer-directors to forget how to seduce an audience. Shyamalan has had a rough streak, what with The Village and Lady in the Water and now this. True, The Happening rests on a workable premise, and the writer-director of The Sixth Sense manages a handful of isolated creepy images illustrating this mass-suicide notion. Early in the film construction workers hurl themselves off a tall building, one by one. Later, a group of survivors drives into an empty city, and the sight of tall ladders leaning against trees is a prelude to an arresting sight. Later still Betty Buckley, as a rural survivor of the unexplained viral attack, does something entirely natural to her though startling to us: She smacks the hand of a little girl reaching for a cookie. Otherwise the movie grinds along, solemnly, and it feels an awful lot longer than its 90 minutes. Playing his first full-on ninny, Mark Wahlberg is the high school science teacher who evacuates Philadelphia along with his wife (Zooey Deschanel), his fellow teacher ( John Leguizamo) and his friend's daughter (Ashlyn Sanchez). To the country! We'll be safe there! Wahlberg and company form a ragtag band of brothers and sisters, determined to survive. We know trouble's coming whenever the breeze picks up and the grass starts to sway. It's so not frightening, it's frightening. The characters are either gasbags or forgetful. No matter how many dead bodies turn up on the road, someone tells someone else to close a window or get inside or something, and the response, always, is this: Why? Is something wrong? The picture, shot in cinematographer Tak Fujimoto's trademark overcast tones, provides a full array of suicide methodology, delivered with a doleful air: gunshots, the aforementioned plummeting, needles in the neck and death by rider mower (!). In the film's one true moment of two-exclamation-point camp, we watch a zookeeper feed his arms to a lion!! Let me amend that: !!! After the insufferably dense mermaid mythology of Lady in the Water, Shyamalan clearly wanted to keep things simple. He whizzed straight past simple to simplistic: Wahlberg and Deshanel's marriage is supposed to be on the rocks (something about her having dessert with a co-worker?!?), and he wanted kids but she didn't. Still, if there's one thing grisly unexplained phenomena are good for, it's marriage counseling. I admire The Sixth Sense and most of Signs, but I don't get what has happened to this filmmaker's storytelling instincts. We can't just stand here as uninvolved observers! the saucer-eyed Deschanel says at one point. True enough. In The Happening, the roles of the uninvolved observers will be played by the audience. [EMAIL PROTECTED] - - - - - MPAA rating: R (for violent and disturbing images). Running time: 1:30. Opening: June 13. [scifinoir2] Final 10 'Battlestar' Episodes Could Expand To 12
MICHAEL HINMAN mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Source: Chicago Tribune http://www.chicagotribune.com Jun-13-2008 http://www.syfyportal.com/news425121.html One would almost think that a big-time mid-season finale of Battlestar Galactica was airing Friday night with all the news coming out ... and they would be right. But as fans start to worry about how long they'll have to wait to see how Friday's cliffhanger concludes, Chicago Tribune columnist Maureen Ryan has some good news: we may be getting a bigger dose of Battlestar Galactica in 2009 in the form of at least one telemovie similar to Razor and two additional hours tacked on to the end. Moore told Ryan that the last episode is three hours long, and it's likely SciFi Channel will opt to not air the entire episode in one night, and instead, break it down into three more episodes. The expansion of the last half of the season would follow a telemovie that could begin as early as the completion of production on the Battlestar spinoff Caprica, according to some sources with SyFy Portal. Caprica is already in pre-production, if not in full-blown production, and there are no strike orders for some of the main sets for Battlestar Galactica at its Vancouver, B.C., studio. Because Glen A. Larson holds the movie http://www.syfyportal.com/news425121.html rights for Battlestar Galactica and not NBC Universal, a telemovie would likely air on SciFi Channel and then have an instant DVD http://www.syfyportal.com/news425121.html release, likely within a week of the broadcast. Ryan had previously reported that as many as three Battlestar movies http://www.syfyportal.com/news425121.html were being considered, but it's unclear if the other two would be made. Although official distribution numbers were never released, sources have said in the past that sales met the goals set by the SciFi Channel high brass. The mid-season finale of Battlestar Galactica airs Friday at 10 p.m. ET on SciFi Channel. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

There were some odd people that tried these antics, North Shore city council traffic safety manager Andre Dannhauser told Reuters. Drivers caught trying to beat the system are fined NZ$150 ($114). Oh, yes. See my previous post on this, Tracey. The woman I referred to there has never been pulled over for using the HOV lanes improperly. And the practice is really popular with people who live along the GA 400 Corridor, 400 being the only area toll road. (That I know of, anyway.) I've been seeing this here in Atlanta since the day I moved here, back in '86. Tracey de Morsella [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thu Jun 12, 12:02 PM ET Drivers in New Zealand's largest city of Auckland are turning to inflatable passengers to try and beat transit lane rules. I don't know whether to burst out in tears of joy or add on another reason to loathe their stinking guts. I'll take what's behind Door #2... Seriously, that may have been it for me, as in *it*. I may never watch another ep again. I know, Skiffy's in this to make money, but I don't have to help them. Re: [scifinoir2] FW: [AFAMHED] Observation: No black boys in bookstores
I'm one of those black boys that still inhabit bookstores (the three local Barnes and Nobles in particlar). Even though I had to put up with alot of strange 'stares' for a while until they got 'used' to my weekly presence. Now some of them even ask for my advice in info/locating anything anime/sci-fi/gamming. Go figure. -GTW ** Vote for your city's best dining and nightlife. City's Best 2008.
