[sdre-l]: names, fugazi, etc

2001-12-18 Thread Charlie Wagner

About Fugazi:
I'd say on the twin guitar tone, yeah, as well as the screamed in unison vox
and emphasis on octaves, strange rhythm patterns, etc. I notice it heaps
more on Diary than on anything else. I also do NOT pick up the same rhythmic
qualities in Sunny Day that I do in Fugazi, but I get a lot of the same
feel from Diary as I do from the self-titled EP up through Steady Diet of
Nothing.

About band names:
My current band is called Speed Lab, but I've always thought good names
would be Luau, Psychic Sidekick, Roman, and part of me really wants to start
a band called Foogahzee but I never do. Probably better if I don't.

2001-11-22 Thread Charlie Wagner

I used to think he was terrible, but I've changed my opinion to just really
bad. The problem as I see it is ignorant mall kids trying to be hip
(whatever that means) and not figuring out that DC is simply the poor man's
Elliot Smith, Damien Jurado, Elvis Costello, Aimee Mann, [insert your
favorite singer/songwriter here], etc. Plus, the music is just really
fucking boring and not very good. Fourth-rate Rites of Spring lyrics don't
work well over unoriginal chord changes delivered via acoustic guitar
strumming. Bleh.

i just have this crazy feeling that their fifth album is going to be
their best yet... and will unite all of the subscribers of this list

Even though I rip on TRT a lot, I remember reading somewhere that some
reviewer said the band was one album away from their OK Computer, and I
agree with that. I think they've gotten far enough to realize their
successes and their failures and can determine what will fit and what won't

Re: [sdre-l]: Jeremy interview, and (oh no) a poll...

2000-12-05 Thread Charlie Wagner

I've actually been trying to think of this from Nate's perspective. Maybe in
his mind, the band was done, over with, finished, finito, etc. WHy try to
recapture the youthful energy and excitement they had, just let the band be,
keep it how it was, let their two albums be a nice representation of how to
make melodic, energetic, but intelligent music, and provide a blueprint for
future bands. I still think it was a dumb idea for the band to keep the
name, because with a band like that, where the members have a certain
chemistry together and are obviously doing something right, it'll never be
the same. Plus, we wouldn't have to hear Jeremy and Dan bitch about playing
the old songs.

[sdre-l]: SF show last night

2000-07-30 Thread Charlie Wagner

Okay, let's see... I won't give any boring details about the crowd there or
my journey into the city. I went with my friends Matt, Chris, and Jonas. We
arrived at Slim's around five and just hung out. Said "Hi" to Jeremy,
Dawson, Adam the drum tech/percussionist, and one of the guys from No Knife.
Met a lister, John, from Redding, inquired what the hell he was doing
driving five hours down here. Went down to Wa Ha Ka and saw no list homies,
so retreated back to the venue after a quesadilla.

Hung around till eight when the door opened, went in. Talked to Dawson, she
said the tour's going great, she's just started the fifth month of her
pregnancy, and they don't have a name yet. Bout The Rising Tide on gatefold
green vinyl, a sticker, the TSMAP tee, and a poster.

No Knife hit the stage, and I must say, I was thoroughly impressed, a nice
Jawbox meets Jawbreaker sound, leaning more towards the 'box. I went and
bought their albums after seeing them. I don't know exactly what they played
or the order, but I do remember most of the stuff was off "Hit Man Dreams"
and "Fire in the City of Automatons," with songs like "Your Albatross,"
"Charades," "Hit Man Dreams," "The Spy," and they closed with "Mission
Control."

Sunny Day came on and blew everyone away, because this was primarily a SDRE
gig and there were no bones about it. They played an excellent gig, Dan, as
always, was the happiest guy on the face of the earth, singing along,
dancing, smiling and jumping, he truly is what makes the live show so fun.
Jeremy was intense as always, going as high as he could several times. Will,
like usual, beat the shit out his drums and did it well. More guitars than
last tour, I'll say that. On the slower version of "8" Jeremy broke a
string, "The Rising Tide" was damn groovy, "In Circles" had cool intro
before the crowd erupted, but didn't have the extra live verse
unfortunately.

Umm... That's about it. I give SDRE an A for "effort" and No Knife an A+ for
"ahh, hot damn that's good."

[sdre-l]: the large poll

2000-07-25 Thread Charlie Wagner

Hmm... Where to begin with this...

I can't remember exactly when, but awhile ago I took a poll that was huge,
gargatuan even, in its scope. Every band everyone else on the list liked
besides Sunny Day Real Estate, to be exact. The rules were: any bands anyone
else felt like contributing, from every band they've ever heard to only one
or two favorites. And lo and behold, I got a whole slew of responses,
somewhere near 100 I believe. Anyways, the poll is coming back. That's
right, any and all bands you like, send them here. The due date is August
11, and the results will be posted August 12.

I've decided to add a pair of new categories.
What with the new album coming out, I'd love to get people's favorite
non-SDRE album. Also, due to the new "best touring band" post that's been
floating around, I'd also like your opinion of the best non-SDRE live band.

Like I said before, all entries by August 11. Hopefully I'll get above last

I just got the new album yesterday.
I think it's great, except for "Television," that song bugs me.
However...
Does anyone else think it kinda sucks that there's pictures of the band all
over the booklet? I thought the coolest thing about the three earlier albums
was the lack of photos, giving the band an anonymous feel where you weren't
concerned with what the members looked like. This whole "new thing" they're
going for... Geez, they might as well put on signs that say "Mainstream,
Embrace Us!" I'm not gonna bitch like other people on this list would about

[sdre-l]: Movie Stars

1999-08-31 Thread Charlie Wagner

I found this link through Wicked Land (http://www.wickedland.com/):

Vocalist/guitarist Jeremy Enigk and drummer William Goldsmith of emo-core
pioneers Sunny Day Real Estate are slated to appear in the action-comedy
"For The Cash", an indie film directed by Matt Matsuoko, ccording to the
band's official Web site(www.sunnydayrealestate.com).

Goldsmith and Enigk, who play fallen angels, are part of a cast that
features members of 764-Hero, Gashuffer, Undertow, The U-Men, Botch, and
Murder City Devils. Goldsmith, who briefly served as drummer for the Foo
Fighters, portrayed a blind alcoholic in Matsuoka's last film, "Heartbreak
Beat".

"For The Cash" will be showing in the Seattle area this fall followed by a
video release this winter.

Meanwhile, Sunny Day Real Estate is currently mulling offers from major
labels having fulfilled their contract with Sub Pop records, which will be
releasing a live SDRE album and video Oct. 19. In following with the trend
of wiping the slate clean, SDRE has dropped their management as well.

[sdre-l]: next big thing, yeah right!

1999-08-15 Thread Charlie Wagner

Here's an interesting point: Fugazi

The record industry has been after Fugazi for a loong time, mainly
because I guess they read 'Firestarter': "There are tough breaks and there
are easy breaks, but there are no impossible breaks."
Every Fugazi record, the band does something new, mutating their sound to
avoid the mainstream. The point is this: if emo becomes mainstream, I think
true emo such as SDRE, The Promise Ring, Burning Airlines, etc., will cease
to exist. I doubt that many emo bands want mainstream play.

Imagine going through a high school (such as I do every day, *sigh*):
Tiffany: "Hey Bridget, I got some new Tommy Hilfiger® jeans and a pair of
Nike© shoes, plus this cute little skirt from Macy's®!"
Bridget: "Really, that is like, soo cool!"
Tiffany: "Guess what, I also got the new Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys,
and I got Jets to Brazil and the new Get-Up Kids seveninch!"
Bridget: "Ohmigod, that is like, soo cool!"

The fanbase for emo has grown immensely in the past few years

I think the main reason that most people into emo (and just indie rock in
general) is because mainstream music, for the most part, is shit. Plain and
simple. And besides, where music is made for the almighty dollar and we have
Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, and N'Sync selling the little kids emotions
that are completely and utterly false, it's about time some people with the
six leeter word, T-A-L-E-N-T, got a little praise and a few bucks. A good
band makes songs that you like. A great band makes songs that make you think

Re: [sdre-l]: Diary VS HIFTBSO

1999-07-27 Thread Charlie Wagner

It's only natural. Of course, when they're releasing their first album their
gonna be harder and faster and have more energy, because a new band wants to
make a name for themselves. But after awhile, I guess it's just like "Hey,
we're in a band, and this is our job; we're not that young anymore, so let's
write stuff that shows that we've grown." How it Feels to be Something on is
probably the path that every band wants to take; having a new style and
sound but still being undeniably fresh, original, artistic, and true to
yourselves.

Example:
The Smashing Pumpkins: Adore was a great album, but was it the Smashing
Pumpkins? Not really.
Orange 9mm: Pretend I'm Human finds the band evolving in the wrong
direction, with a large identity crisis.
Sebadoh: The Sebadoh may be a good record, but where's the heart of it? When
they lost Bob Fay, they lost themselves.

When you think about it, most bands that lose a key element (e.g. Nate
Mendel) usually go off and don't know what to do. Sunny Day pulled off the
departure of Nate very gracefully, and we should give them kudos for that at
the very least. How it Feels to be Something on is terrific; whether you
like it or not though, you have to respect that the band managed to rise
above it and come back to the top. I think we all should just say "Thank you
Sunny Day Real Estate; you guys have done a fine job."

I would like to add something. People have to remember that Sunny Day
started as Dan and Nate writing songs together, THEN they added William and

[sdre-l]: Hello again, everyone

1999-04-19 Thread Charlie Wagner

After a brief tenure due to unknown reasons in which this list ceased
to be sent to me, I am back! For about a week there I didn't et any
mail from this list, so I resubscribed myself after finding out that
it wasn't just a gap in time. Now for some actual purpose:
I have been informed that an email, a very, special, email, that I
sent to this was not recieved. I'm sure that many of you would be
interested in this ... The Jeremy Enigk End Session promo in MP3? Any
takers? Each song is available at the following addresses:
1) Abegail Anne. http://karl23.ml.org/pillars/abegailannees.mp3
2) Return of the Frog Queen. http://karl23.ml.org/pillars/rotfqes.mp3
3) Lizard. http://karl23.ml.org/pillars/lizardes.mp3
4) Carnival. http://karl23.ml.org/pillars/carnivales.mp3
5) Explain. http://karl23.ml.org/pillars/explaines.mp3
Enjoy!
Thanks, and have a Sunny Day.

[sdre-l]: bass tabs

1999-04-12 Thread Charlie Wagner

Due to my lack of sleep, hard work on the new site (end of April I
PROMISE), school work, and the fact that J. Palmer wrote one bad
muthafucka of a tab for this song, Guitar and Video Games will NOT be
completed for bass until the end of my pillars work. Sorry. Also, I
noticed a lot of people copying my little signature thing. Cool ...
Thanks, and have a Sunny Day.

[sdre-l]: OTS: MK Ultra

1999-04-05 Thread Charlie Wagner

Hello everyone. I don't know if anyone has ever tried this, but I went
to http://www.infoseek.com/ and typed in "mk ultra" in the search box,
and it gave me all this weird stuff, e.g. CIA novels, UFO conspiracies,
etcetera. Could ANYONE here shed some light on this privately for me?
Have a good evening, everybody.
Thanks, and have a Sunny Day.

[sdre-l]: Bass Tabs

1999-03-29 Thread Charlie Wagner

Thanks to everyone who wished me a happy birthday.
Anyways, new tab voting is completed!

Song About an Angel: II (2)
   Friday: (4)
Guitar and Video Games: I (5)

It got pretty close in the end, when Friday nearly pulled ahead. But
Guitar and Video Games will be the new bass tab. Geez, next time I do
poll voting, it'll probably be from my ... site **shudder** Next tab
votes, send in the three songs you want, in order, of 1, 2, 3, like
those other polls, this is point specific by number, so please place
your votes accordingly. Guess that's it.
Thanks, and have a Sunny Day.

[sdre-l]: New Tablatures

1999-03-28 Thread Charlie Wagner

Hello everyone. As I draw to a close on my construction of my new site,
I realize that I have very little tablature at all for HIFTBSO. I have
two bass tabs, and that's where the list ends. If there are any tabs
whatsoever that anyone could make and send to me, I would be most
grateful. Also, I am ISO any tablature for piano or drums for any SDRE
song. The site is running a little slow, but I'll give myself until
Friday to wrap things up. Oh, and it's my birthday today ;) Only
mentioning because my parents managed to scrounge up a copy of That
Virtua Feeling someplace, I don't know.
Thanks, and have a Sunny Day.

[sdre-l]: Sorry, Peeps

1999-03-26 Thread Charlie Wagner

Guess what everybody? Hotmail has been fucking with me! Ain't that a
hoot? I just finished cleaning my In-Box, so I can send now, apparently.
Anyhows, I remember a couple people asking for tabs and/or backgrounds,
and Hotmail wouldn't let me send email for awhile, so if you asked for
something and didn't get into, please email me back and I'll send it to
you.

[sdre-l]: bass tabs, Joe

1999-03-22 Thread Charlie Wagner

I'd have to say that the response to this bass tab poll has been
lackluster at best. I've gotten all of two votes, yay for me ...
The songs to vote for are:
Song About an Angel:one vote
Friday: zero votes (shame on you! ;)
Guitar and Video Games: one vote
If I don't get more votes, I'm just going to end up tabbing Friday. If
you want your opinion heard, email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

..On a completely unrelated topic, I had a conversation via email
with Joe, who is the coolest bass player and one hell of a magic mofo,
as well as a great guy. Anyways, for those of you who have been to his
page and read his bio, you fill in these fields at the bottom. One of
them is "Where do you live?" I put where live, and as it turns out, I
live in the same city as Joe's mother! Interesting coincidence, or
something more sinister at work?

Thanks, and have a Sunny Day.

Does anyone know birthdays of the guys; eye color and height would be
helpful too. I'm trying to compile a very big list of information for my
Sunny Day page that's in the works (http://karl23.ml.org/pillars/).
Any information would be very helpful, and might get you a nod of

Re: [sdre-l]: MTV

1999-03-21 Thread Charlie Wagner

I've always personally thought that maybe one of the reasons they broke
up is because they were becoming big. Everybody in the record biz (well,
maybe not EVERYbody) kept on saying "Next big thing, next big thing ..."
and maybe the band broke up to stick it to the bigwigs who were parading
them around as "Next big thing" and not getting the message in the
music.
Thanks, and have a Sunny Day.

[sdre-l]: Tab Voting

1999-03-15 Thread Charlie Wagner

Seven:
Red Elephant: II
Pillars: III

And so, it seems that Seven will be the next bass tab. I'm changing the
songs to vote for as well:

Song About an Angel
Friday
Guitar and Video Games

You may still vote for Pillars and Red Elephant as well, but I have not
decided to add more votes to the present one or start off fresh.
Whatever. I'm late for school.
Thanks, and have a Sunny Day.

[sdre-l]: Stuff

1999-03-11 Thread Charlie Wagner

Hey everyone, how's everybody doing today? I recently finished a
1024 x 768 bitmap (.bmp) that looks great as wallpaper. It's HIFTBSO
themed, so if anyone would like it, you can email me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and I'll zip it then send it to you. Also, I haven't
decided what song to do a bass tab for yet (for those of you who missed
it, the choices were Seven, Red Elephant, Pillars) so if people could
email me tellign me what they'd like Mar. 15, I will tab the most
popular request after that time. I'm guessing that due to the recent
popularity of the revised "Rodeo Jones" tab (after my laughable first
attempt), and the previous success of the "In Circles" bass tab, I'll be
doing two a month (voting for next being up till the 15 of the month and
the last day) until I run out of songs. Okay, I'll see all you hepcats
later.
Thanks, and have a Sunny Day.

Alright, raise your hand if you can answer these two questions:
1) What the fuck does this have to do with the name of the band in the
   title of the mailing list?
2) Why the hell should ANYONE on this list besides the two pissed off
parties care about this at all? |
Anyone, anyone? Point proven. |

are you making a threat?
I was just wondering?
does a little variety in the posting make you angry?
sure, my posts were pointless and way off topic, but I am having
a good time and I am a sunny day real estate fan. How would
your favorite band feel if they knew that you were excluding
people or threatening other fans of their music for writing
three harmless lines in an email post. I know I know, this
is the sdre list and all we are supposed to talk about is news
concerning the band or their off shoots or whateverbut I
like to share.

So, in conclusion, if I do recieve an email bomb from someone,
