problem with
interchange of files. Diagrams and revisions all seem to come and go
with no problem.
Also found that Winword worked well under Wine.
It's not really an issue anymore.

Yep. ssh itself works fine - I can log into the machine. And, if it is
relevant, the remote machine also has scp.
