houdini generates backupfiles every n minutes, in case it crash it also has a
version saved in temp, witch if houdini get unresponsive you can kill it and
you will still get the backup generated =) on top of that houdini has a daily
build so if you find a bug, they will fix it and probably
if saving right click the node, and save the uv out doesn't work, you can move
the point to uv space, use a wire node to thick the wires, and render a
picture with an orto camera from above. make an otl with a render button
=) easy setup to get thicker lines in the UVimage.

rendering time depend on the settings. as default calculates 8 refractions
and 8 reflections, are you using GI? photons? etc... or at least can you post
an example file?

talk to much about it but we switch from another render to mantra to make a
full feature movie. that's where the light bank panel comes
the shader tree is fun and easy to work, you can override many materials and
have groups of materials sharing certains part, that make it easy to modify and
lighter for rendering since doesn't have to compile deiferent chonks of shaders
all the time.
shader tree oppose to other 3d packages,
on the referenced model.
