OK,so you would be considered one of the good guys. But believe me,if you

Your first sentence, I agree 100%. For the rest however, it just may be
me, but I think that any GOOD AHJ or Contractor would be willing and

I do agree that the situation as its presented would dictate whether or
not a rational approach to enlightenment is prudent. I wasn't there to
watch the circles being drawn/measured on the floor. I wasn't able to
read any body language and I didn't hear the conversations first hand.

I'd like to basically second what Ron wrote earlier. But even from
"your side of the counter", you have to appreciate that after a few
years in the biz, some of us have developed a sense of what is and then
again what is definitely NOT a teachable moment. Several years ago I

While I understand the frustration factor of having to go through something
like this, I disagree with John. If you can explain/teach in a civil manner
and allow the inspector to see his mistake on his own, you may very well
gain an ally on future projects. If that does not work, he always has a

The problem as I see it, is an inexperienced individual with no knowledge of
what he is inspecting, has been put in a position of authority with the
power to OK or reject our work. This is and always be unacceptable in the

Quite honestly, I'm a bit disappointed with some of the responses from
the "SME's" with this forum. It's easy to poke fun at someone behind
closed doors. My guess is that most if not everyone here didn't know
much more than this inspector when they first started in the business. I
sure didn't.

The circle method is applicable for checking smoke detector spacing.
Since this inspector stated that "sprinklers are not his
specialty"...he's probably doing what he thinks is correct based on his
knowledge of smoke detectors.

I'd suggest requiring a test with hydrants closed.
With hydrants open, there's an additional allowable leakage that benefits the
