Gem Fab has a Glen Burnie facility which would be right down the street,
haven't used them in years personally but they were quite competent and
delivered plenty of big jobs in a timely fashion for us when I worked in Ohio.

That doesn't work in seismic zones Forest. That's sway bracing, not seismic

We have jurisdictions in AZ that require what we call feel good bracing. No
calc's required, use drive screws to attach brace from 8 pipe to wood 2x6 at
the roof. A little different from the hoops we jump through for OSHPAD in CA.

Drive screws? Lags are no longer allowed because they pull out. Drive screws
are ... negligent, arguably.
Forest - all I can say about your spacing template is that it's five editions
old and any BO that accepts it isn't doing the due diligence.

I can't recall ever using drive screws on bracing, only hanging, and always
two. Lag screws are acceptable under certain conditions (wood member
greater than 12 wide) for bracing but have special installation
requirements.
Steve M. We always called that 40/80 rule that Forest described as sway
Thank you guys for chiming in.
I always thought sway bracing was the wire/cable stuff and seismic was the
rigid type...
Mind us in New York, we're always behind the rest of the world! NFPA 13, 2002

Here on the left coast we are required to earthquake brace so when the building
falls down the fire sprinkler system will still be in the air and fully
operational.

Byron,
The system is supposed to hold the building up. And as I've seen in some
contracts the sprinkie contractor is supposed to pay for the engineering
and any improvements to the building required by the bracing. This saves
the owner and the general contractor a lot of money.

They make us install sway braces in a non-seismic zone because they can. We ask
if they want calc's and the answer is what calc's? Were just trying to get by.
We also put $5k worth of overfill protection on a 180 gallon diesel fuel tank
in a pump room, because they make us. Pretty hard to

I am now wondering if the response by Roland would indeed apply

residential heads in a dorm room even if far enough away from a heat source
to use ordinary temp?
Viking has an office in Jessup, which is very close, and Ferguson fire and
fab has a branch in Baltimore as well.
HD supply is right around there as well I believe.

Ron,
Curious ... because they can... Does that mean that they have a local
amendment, are using the IFC catchall that they can do what they think (
appendix clearly shows that wasn't intent but is used as a hammer) or does it
mean it isn't worth the fight because you may win the battle in
I believe I know what jurisdiction Ron F is talking about. I have
explained to their reviewers that per the IFC that they have adopted,
bracing is not required in Seismic Design Category A/B. I ask for a
reference as to where it is required. I get pointed to Chap 9 of NFPA
13. I get told
Been there, done that. This is what I expected but was curious to see if
there was an actual amendment and would have loved to see the documentation for
the request. thanks
