That's what I meant, too.

But I will check the link you provided. There's much I should learn

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS library empty after rescan

2019-08-28 Thread digimaster

No thats not what i mean.

Linux/Debian where the QTS of QNap is made from, has a straight forward
User/owner setup.
QLogitechMediaServer runs in a chrooted debian file-system, and QTS is
also debian.
>From version beside the user squeezeboxserver, there also is a group
squeezeboxserver.
That group is important for plugins and LMS, so needed to work proper.

What i mean, in the QNAP QTS you cab make a group like music, and make
the user squeezeboxserver and the user(s) who manage the musicfile, both
part of it.
Then if those file have read/executed rights, squeezeboxserver can read
and see them, but not write or deleted them
In user rights when the user rights is 751, the 5 tells what user parted
of the same group can do.

Please look at the following link, which tries to explain who it works.
User and group management is very important in linux, so also in QTS
from QNap.
And never ever just chance anything regarding rights or owners in QTS,
just to get access but try to work with users and groups.
For example if you run a ftp server on QTS, make a group FTP and make
every on epart of that group who you want to uses the FTP

https://www.thegeekdiary.com/understanding-basic-file-permissions-and-ownership-in-linux/

Owner/group and rights looks a bit strange a different in linux, but if
you start reading and learn you understand why.
And there will come a time, where you will wish MS software would work
the same.

Are you sure these files had the same permissions / owners BEFORE you
copied them to your NAS?

Digimaster suggested creating a group called Music and put
squeezeboxserver and my user in there. I hadn't had time to test that,
but you could. You would have to grant that new group RO access to your
music library, of course.

It might turn out to be a struggle for me as well... Of course I would
have preferred all files would have come in with owner 999 and
permissions 750. Then no action would be necessary. But as some of my
files had owner 1000 I would have to work on these anyway. Changing the
owner for some files or changing permissions for all files – does not
really make much difference, does it? At least I hope that next time all
files will come in with owner set to 1000...
Anyway I will monitor this and maybe I'll find the reason if there still

1. It's not unusual to have to refresh the view when using FTP clients.
(And that should be sufficient, no need to restart anything.)
2. Not sure what you are applying where, but sure, why not. :)

Last weekend I copied some new albums into the music folder my NAS.
Connecting with Cyberduck showed that all new files had permissions 750
and owner was 999 for the larger part of them and 1000 for the rest.
Don't ask me why – all files come from the same place and get copied in
one session using CarbonCopyCloner. I decided to try digimasters
approach first: Setting permissions to 755 with a normal user (1000) as
owner for the Multimedia folder with all subfolders and files.

Two recommendations: 1. Better reconnect with Cyberock after having
applied some changes as not all changes seem to get updated on the
screen. 2. Better stop LMS before applying changes, as it seemed some
files were blocked with LMS running.

After having successfully set up both owner and permissions like
digimaster suggested, everything's running fine. For the future I will
better do this procedure everytime I update my library to prevent any
struggle. I'm still not sure why it always worked nice without caring
about permissions and owner for so long befoire and why it then suddenly
became an issue. Anyway with your help I learned some things and now
know how to help myself with that kind of problem.

If I was running a Pi (I have) it would be much faster than the QNAP!!!
I actually use an old dual core HP Microserver with 8GB RAM and a single
SSD but the files on the NAS (a really old 4 disk/raid 5 TS419P) via
NFS.
The HP running VB2.4 is much faster (and more resilient to multiple

although a Pi4 is theoretically quicker than the HP, the SSD which is
where LMS database resides makes it fly.
I had to hack the VB config files a bit to get the CD ripping direct to
the QNAP and to get the correct file permissions so I can edit via
Mp3tag through Windows but once done it works perfectly.
The SSD was the biggest single improvement I have come across as far as
LMS is concerned.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS library empty after rescan

2019-08-21 Thread d6jg

You are both talking about file ownership which is the problem area but
in linux every file has both an owner and a group assigned to it.

If you use squeezeboxuser as the owner all is well but you can't use a
normal user.

This is a NAS and from the look of the path structure a QNAP, yes?

Are you running LMS on the QNAP ? If so add squeezeboxuser to the
administrators group.

If you are running LMS elsewhere e.g. on a Pi have you mounted the drive
via NFS or via CIFS - if latter what user did you use ? If its QNAP/CIFS
you should definitely use the QNAP "admin" user but it would be better
via NFS as no user/pass is required and by default the NFS connection is
by root.root.

I have a QNAP. The ownership of the Multimedia folder as far as the NAS
is concerned is admin.administrators. This translatates to root.root in
"normal" linux. The user that writes the files to the NAS (me) is a
member of the QNAP administrators group.

If you copied all the files from the same computer and with the same
user account to your NAS share, they all should have the same owner and
set of permissions.

As I earlier wrote set it to a normal user with 0755 as rights. The last

Are the files with 999 as the owner treated differently than the ones
with 1000? Anyway, the file owner should not differ.

According to the screenshot they still are. However, it works with 770,
too. I use 770, because if I copy a file with Windows to the NAS, it
gets 770 and not 775. Thus, new files were not found, until I changed
the settings.

I have posted somewhere here the settings I use to make it work with
770. Maybe that would help. As soon as I find the post, I'll add the
link here.

No link yet.

As I never get a long path right, I use auto complete or copy and
paste.

I use WinSCP, but it took me under ten seconds to google "cyberduck
change permissions".

- Copy a music file to the NAS and look what permissions it has and
  who the owner is.
- Compare permissions and user with files that are found in LMS.
- Do a rescan, is the new file found?
- If not, what permissions & owner have the files that are found? Use
these permissions and owner for all files.
- Make sure newly copied files have the right permissions and owner
from the start to avoid these problems.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS library empty after rescan

2019-08-18 Thread steklo

I tried some things this afternoon.

First I took a look at my music folder via Cyberduck (an SFTP client
available for Mac):

27972

I realized that for most albums the owner was set to 999, but for some -
all of them among the newly added albums I was missing, but still not
all of them - were set to owner 1000.

digimaster had writen some days ago:

"No need to set those file to user squeezeboxserver, but make sure they
are rwxr-xr-x as file rights so LMS can access them !"

and

"Regarding you're issue, already wrote did a test. But can not reproduce
it here. The only thing you wrote, setting the music files to
squeezeboxserver as user, is something I don't have. My music collection
is set to a normal user, but with 0755 as rights.

Strangely enough I read that more user are setting it like you.
Something which i would never suggest to do.

I for myself once in a while do chmod -R 0755 (music path). To make sure
everything is set correctly."

Other than digimasters reciommendation permissions in my library were
obvously different: rwxrwx--- (770)

As I could not find a way to change this with Cybersduck I tried a
terminal ssh session. Unfortunately I was not able to get into my music
folder, the command line

[cd /share/*/Multimedia/Musik Stefan/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music] or [cd
/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/Multimedia/Musik Stefan/iTunes/iTunes
Media/Music]

resulted in

Let me try to sum up what you just described.

- After reinstalling, you had problems scanning the library.
- It worked after you changed permissions for all folders and
  subfolders.
- Now you copied new stuff in it and it is not found.

Do these new files by any chance have different permissions than the old
ones?

If you want to wipe the library, you have to wipe the cache folder
(minus "InstalledPlugins"), but be aware that this could bring
unforeseen consequences if you use plugins (Spotty, for example) that I
don't.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS library empty after rescan

2019-08-16 Thread steklo

Well, seems I was a bit too optimistically:

Yesterday I added a number of new albums to my library and performed the
usual "delete-and-rescan" procedure. The result is that LMS shows all
albums that had been there before but none of the newly added. I
re-checked if the files are really present within the music folder, also
re-checked permissions, and just to be on the safe side had the NAS
assign the present permissions to all subfolders and files within the
Multimedia folder (were the music folder is situated too). Rescanning
again did not change anything: Still all new albums are not present in
LMS.

I remember that after I had reinstalled LMS I had some problems to get
it scanning the library. If I get it right it worked after I changed
permissions for squeezeserver from "read & write" to "read only"
concerning Multimedia folder (and subfolders). I could not find any
logic in this but didn't try to get to the bottom as it apparently
worked that way. Obviously it doesn't quite, even though I hadn't
changed anything in between.

The strange thing is, that the "delete-and-rescan" procedure did not
wipe the library completely. If it is a problem of permissions or – as
Michael has assumed before – a plug-in blocking LMS to get access to the
files, it means that this time all "old" files can be accessed by LMS
whereas the "new" ones cannot.

Can anyone make some sense out of that?

Best regards
Stefan

If I get it right I'd first have to go to the cache directory (which as

including the string linking to the cache folder. Then I should be in

That's correct. But as d6jg pointed out WinSCP might be easier to handle.

Thats why I'm suggesting WinSCP - there is no command line unless you
want it but there is complete access to the file system in a File
Explorer type manner. It will be much easier than using File Manager in
QNAP web interface.

ok, the cache folder location in settings/information menu is listed

I was hoping digimaster might help (I asked him) as he naturally knows

course I do not want to double post and flood several threads of this

Hi Michael,

thanks for your thoughts!

My first problem actually is to find the location of the LMS cache
folder. Any idea where I would find it on a QNAP NAS? Unfortunately
QNAP's file station, which is the app to manage the files on the NAS,
keeps all apps and app related data (as well as system and system
related data) invisible and thus nothing in there is manageable via file
station (as far as I know) even if being logged in as administrator.

So probably we need to connect via ssh and execute a command line to do
that. But to do so 1.) the location of the cache folder must be clear
and 2.) I'd need the assistance of someone who is able to express the
command lines needed – do you think you support me?

As for third party plugins – yes I have some loaded. As far as I
remember these are:

AirPlay Bridge
Band’s Campout
Multi Library
Music and Artist Information
Radio Paradise
Song Info (not sure)
Song Lyrics (not sure)
Spotify for Squeezebox. Still Spotty

Out of these I would suspect Multi Library and Music and Artist
Information might possibly access the database file. What do you think?
Would it make sense to restart LMS with all third party plugins
disabled?

Could it be that somehow permissions for the database have been changed

could have happened though... And also I have no idea how to locate to
that database in order to rearrange the permissions. Any thoughts?

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS library empty after rescan

2019-07-23 Thread steklo

Hello,

I have QLogitechMediaServer 2.04.00 with LMS 7.9.2 running on a QNAP NAS
for quite some time now. It ran very stable through all that time.

>From time to time I add new albums or change some metadata and do a
rescan. After the latest rescan (actually "clear library and rescan
everything") my LMS library is completely empty. I tried several
rescans, I restartet both LMS and NAS and even I checked the file path
(which remained untouched). I also checked the permissions and changed
from "read only" to "read and write" for the user "squeezeboxserver" on
the NAS (even though "write" doesn't seem to make sense to me, does
it?). Nothing helped, LMS library still shows not a single music file.

Any idea what might be wrong?

Best regards
Stefan
