A freeware tool called "BulkFilechanger" is a very handy addition to a
taggers library of software

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/bulk_file_changer.html

After you have done some tag editing you can use it to re-stamp your
files with say a 5 second increase on the original time stamp.

This causes LMS to see it as a more recent file than the original and
thus re-scan it into the library but not to throw it into New Music.

I hoped you just know the answer without having to test it... Thank you
very much! So it's the combination of a new filename with a new
timestamp that moves the whole disc up in time. (Because "timestamp" was
thrown around I'll assume that just renaming the file (and a rescan)
wouldn't move it up in the list.) Interesting, not what I expected.

Good point, thanks for posting.

I always allow mp3tag to change the date stamp, I don't mind if tweaked
music files/albums appear in "New Music".

I recently changed the option in mp3tag so that the date stamp is not
changed when I update tags so that these albums did not show up in New
Music. However, you need to make sure that when backing up files you use
software that will detect changes in the tags and not just look for
changed date stamps. Otherwise you could find that if you had to restore
from a backup all updated tags are lost.

With "preserve file modification time when saving files" unchecked, I
renamed the *title tag* of the first track of an album to "Track
renamed"

24487

Rescanned my music library, the album *does no*t appear under "New
Music".

The track name change *has* been picked up though.

24488

However, changing the *filename* to match the new track title* does*
bring the album to the top of the "New Music" menu.

24489

Checking "preserve file modification time when saving files" will not
modify the files timestamps, and any changes will not show up in new
music.

just this one track at the top and an "old" one further down the list,
or is the folder's date used, thus moving the whole disc up the list?

Perhaps I was expecting too much for one tag editor to do it all. So
maybe I'll take you up on that, once I can find the link again. id3tag
seems to hoover up my mp3tag searches.

Generally most of my tagging is fine but I have issues with compilations
and having downloaded 7.9.0 (which I like) thought it was about time to
get it sorted. It's a bit of a project though. LMS doesn't think I have
any compilations. I have about 100. I suspect the ripper I was using set

Compilation tag field is easy enough to create in mp3tag, we'll talk you
through it.

Thanks all, that explains it perfectly well.

I'm using Perfect Tunes. A quick hunt suggests it has no option for
preserving date stamps.

I did have a look at mp3tag but couldn't get the hang of it. And
couldn't find the compilation tags which mattered to me more than most
other things!

Maybe I'll try again..

You don't say which tag editor you use, but in mp3tag there's an option
to preserve the file modification time, look for similar in your tag
editor.

Most tag editors like mp3tag has an option to “preserve time stamps “
otherwise the files change date is altered , it changes when you edit
the tags . That’s how it’s happens .

LMS new list is built solely from the timestms in the files , LMS has no
real log over when you actually got your files .

There is a long standing bug report/enhancement request to have the
option to use creation date instead of change date.
But at the moment change date is it .

How’re there migth be utilities to alter change date on files .

You probably need a rescan afterwards .
