I wanted to use Jabber, but was informed that jabber is no longer taking new
clients.
That makes no sense. Jabber is a protocol (also called XMPP). There are many
public jabber servers that you can set up

if there was any work-around that worked for me. I enabled 2FA on my
account, and then generated an App Password and used that with Pidgin.
To my somewhat amazement, it worked, and has continued to work now for
2 weeks.
It may work for some time with workarounds, but I don't think the plugin
