close SM. Open the profile manager, and have it point to this
mysterious profile. Open SM using that profile. What do you see?

Sorry, Peter, but if I close SM, I surely cannot use the profile
manager?

no, you need to close SM to use the profile manager. Once SM is
closed, click on the windows start button, then run and enter:

seamonkey.exe -p

this will start the SM profile manager.

Thank you! It works, but it does *not* mention the enigmatic
Charley profile, I just have default and test.

Charley, when you have SeaMonkey running, have a look at
Edit-MailNewsgroup Account Setting, select Server Settings on your
Mail account and at the bottom of the screen is the Local Directory.
Is this the same location as the enigmatic Charley?

Then close SeaMonkey, click on the windows start button, then run and
enter:

seamonkey.exe -p

select the profile called Default. Does it appear to be your Charley
profile, i.e. has it got your mail and bookmarks set up as you normally
see them?

Daniel

Yes to both questions, as far as I can tell.

Nobody seems to have asked Charles if Charley is his *Windows*
profile/Account or his *SeaMonkey* profile.

e.g. c:/documents and settings/charley/

or

c:/documents and settings/accountname/application
data/mozilla/profiles/charley/

In the latter case the charley account should be at the same level as
default and test.

Then use SeaMonkey to visit
http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/. Do you pass the Flash
installation test?

If the answers to both questions is Yes, then you have properly
installed Flash.

The message about needing the Flash player is often the result of the
combination of two errors in the Web server. These are USAToday's
problems, not yours.

The first error is that the server is sniffing for what browser you are
using by looking for Firefox. If sniffing can be justified at all,
the server should sniff for Gecko.

The second error is that the server has been coded to give the wrong
response when sniffing fails to provide a recognized browser. Instead
of telling you that you need IE or Firefox -- ignoring the fact that
there are a number of other browsers in use -- it's telling you that you
need Flash.

The workaround for these problems is to spoof IE or Firefox. Spoofing
methods have been thoroughly discussed in other threads in this newsgroup.

the Flash Player. I went to C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
The Flash Folder has the following in it.
 Flash10a.ocx
 Flashplayer.xpt
 install.log
 KB923789.inf
 NPSWF32.dll
 NPSWF32.dll
 NPSWF32.dll.prebar
 NPSWF32 Flashutil.exe (this shows a flash icon)
 Uninstallplugin.exe
Can anyone see where I have made errors? Thanks.

I hesitate to comment since there are far more knowledgeable people
here that I, but I have had trouble installing flash into SeaMonkey and
found the problem to be where it placed the file NPSWF32.dll. Once I
copied that file and placed it into the plugins folder for Mozilla:
 C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\SeaMonkey\plugins
it solved my problem. Now it could be the later version does this
correctly and the older version did not. All I know is what worked.

Placing the plugin into SeaMonkey\plugins should not be necessary.
Flash 10.0 r12 works okay for me with SeaMonkey 1.1.14 while the
NPSWF32.dll plugin remains in C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash. I
have several other plugins -- including Java -- that work okay while
remaining in their own installed directories.

Could some one explain what happen when we clink on the link initiating
the action - news://news.scarlet.be/scarlet.be.general?list-ids ?

Is it an action asked for the news server giving an updated list to SM ?

sorry I can't click on that cause I'm not part of the
scarlet server, so I don't exactly know what you're asking.

So, are you asking about the messages you see about
Removing Expired Articles? If so, then that is a
message from the server. Some servers only keep
messages for x number of days. After that time, they
are removed from the server, and when we try to view
those previously viewed postings, we get those messages.
