Re: lost bookmarks when installing Seamonkey 2.16

I had a very long list of bookmarks that I used all the time, but
when I upgraded to 2.16 they were all lost, or did not appear on the

can have a chance of reinstalling them? Any help will be
appreciated.

TIA for the help.

Try this:

From a browser window, choose Bookmarks | Manage Bookmarks. From the
window that opens, choose Tools | Restore and select a date before the
upgrade, if one is offered.

If that doesn't work, post back and someone will offer some more
advanced ideas.

Close SeaMonkey then Ctrl-Alt-Del and look at Running processes. See if
SeaMonkey is still running. If so, End Task and re-start SeaMonkey to
see if you get your original profile back.

If not, have a look at Tools-Switch Profiles and see if you have more
profiles than you expect. If so, switch to the other profiles to see if
your missing mail is there.

Report back.

I'm just guessing here, but... were you, by any chance, using Seamonkey
version 2.0.x previously, and reinstalled with the most current version?

If so, you may be having a case of failed conversion of the Bookmarks
database. It happens sometimes when upgrading from 2.0.x to a newer
release. Fortunately, the remedy for that is usually simple:

Open your Bookmarks manager, go to Tools, Import HTML and import
your bookmarks.html file.

Note: if you were already using a more recent Seamonkey version, this
solution might not be the best for you. If so, please supply more details.

Where were they? They may be right where you left them.

What did you upgrade from? Bookmarks act differently in 1X, 2.0X and
2.1X. But I still use the same bookmarks for 1X and 2.1X, cross platform.

How did you upgrade?

I very seldom alter or remove an existing OS or app until I know the
replacement is an improvement. I run them in parallel. That way things
seldom get lost. This is especially true of anything from Mozilla,
things change fast, and not always for the better. I once had twenty
versions of SM on a HDD while looking for an anomaly injection
date/time, all running the same profile.

This is likely pointless, but let's try anyway: Bookmarks menu - Manage
bookmarks. Is your new folder anywhere in there, maybe hidden in another
folder, under its new name or the original New Folder?

It's always good to try the obvious solutions first, but yes I did think
about that and looked, and no they are not hidden there (that I can
see). I even imported the bookmarks.html file and did a find for some of
the names I lost, but the file had already been updated and the new
folder with its content is still gone. The session is still active, and
I'm also noticing that I can't view my history, although the history
file is still there, it seems. I thought if they could somehow be
restored it might be a bad idea to close SM but maybe that might help...
thing is, if I could get them back only by staying in the session,
restarting seems like a bad idea.

Hi, I do agree with what Bill has said; Sometimes we just cause ourselves
to suffer unnecessary aggravations for reasons that are not always clear

Also, my bookmarks may not have been that important to keep. Here is what
I was doing: I was trying to do what Bill had suggested but before making a
backup I successfully sorted my bookmarks then, trying to make that backup
file, whoops, everything was gone without me realizing what really happened.
When I looked at bookmarks again I realized that I had lost most of them
except 10 of them..

Thank you both for trying to be helpful, but I think we might as well

Look a file called bookmarks.bak. What is the size of
that. If its large, then perhaps it contains all your
old bookmarks. Just rename the file to
bookmarks-bak.html and see if you can open it with the
bookmark manager under File, Open
