Karl - 26
Stuart - 27
C.E. - 28
Dan - 31
John R. - 35
Chris N. - 36
Joe - 38

Current average: 29,27

Someone said he was 32. Who was it?

Also Karl, in which month were you born? :) Stefan calls me old timer all the time, and I call him young brat although he's just one month younger than me! ;)

[snip]

Devil's advocate: We all worship the oldies, and have fond memories
of playing them. But, any titles you've played for a thousand hours way
back when that you light up now and can't play for more than 10 minutes for
some non-technical reason? (bad controls, overly simplistic, etc.) Nah,
unthinkable.

Short answer: Happens now and then, I guess :)

Long answer: I think it's proportional to the time you've dedicated to it in the past. I still play a lot of the Spectrum's Formula 1 now and then on an emulator, and most of the RPGs I enjoyed in the early 90s I still pick them up to play again (or else why am I building a retro-gaming 486?!). But obviously if you think of a game you just played for a few hours/days back then you won't be dedicating some minutes to it nowadays.

Re: [SWCollect] New topic--Collectors UNITE!

2003-01-29 Thread C.E. Forman
There's another thought I had concerning this: many of us have games in
their original shrinkwrap. The manufacturers of these games probably
never figured they would ever stay for so long in that shrinkwrap, so
might we actually create ourselves a problem if we leave those precious
games in there? There is surely no air circulation going on through the
 shrinkwrap.

Good shrinkwrap jobs have the pencil-eraser hole in the front and back.

I may have actually brought this up in a column once (or was going to): If
the shrink threatens to compress and damage the package, we may have to
decide slitting it slightly is acceptable. Like the action figure
collectors who decided cutting the spare battery out of the package was
better than having it rupture and leak acid all over an MIP fig.

2003-01-29 Thread Feldhamer, Stuart

I don't know...I hate the idea of keeping software in shrinkwrap. I can
understand that shrinkwrap makes the value higher, because someone buying a
piece of old software would rather buy a new item than a used item. But as a
collector, why would I want my software shrinkwrapped unless I'm in the
hobby for profit? I couldn't really enjoy my collection if it was all
shrinkwrapped and I couldn't examine the documentation, feelies, etc. I
mean, I also collect comics. If they were shrinkwrapped, forget it. I would
never have gotten into the hobby. Collecting shrinkwrapped software, you
might as well just be collecting the box art.

I know some of you keep shrinkwrapped and non-shrinkwrapped copies of the
same game...maybe if I had a warehouse I would do this too... : )

2003-01-29 Thread B.L.
All my collection is shrinkwrapped only. I don't need to touch the stuff
inside the box, I did that when I actually played them many years ago ;)
They look nicer in the shrinkwrap imo too. I'm not in it to make money, but
there's nothing wrong with keeping the maximum value in tact for my
collection, right? Plus, I think a collection of originally shrinkwrapped
stuff is just more impressive. ;)

I don't know...I hate the idea of keeping software in shrinkwrap. I can
understand that shrinkwrap makes the value higher, because someone

But as a
collector, why would I want my software shrinkwrapped unless I'm in the
hobby for profit? I couldn't really enjoy my collection if it was all
shrinkwrapped and I couldn't examine the documentation, feelies, etc. I
mean, I also collect comics. If they were shrinkwrapped, forget it. I
would
never have gotten into the hobby. Collecting shrinkwrapped software,
you
might as well just be collecting the box art.

I know some of you keep shrinkwrapped and non-shrinkwrapped copies of
the
same game...maybe if I had a warehouse I would do this too... : )

I'm with you on the shrinkwrap. While it can be fun to have a
complete shrinkwrapped collection, I most enjoy replaying the old games
with all the goodies at hand. There's nothing quite like playing
Suspended with the face mask staring at you over the monitor while you
chart where the robots are or using the cloth map in an Ultima to see
where you want to go next.

 Now, next question...

Would someone who lives closer (driving distance) be willing to accept a
package with some of the stuff I'll be bringing to show off? It's too far
for me to drive (10+ hours) and I'm not chancing my items getting damaged
or
the shrink opened by airport security.

2003-01-29 Thread C.E. Forman
Not immediately. He hasn't been selling T-shirts for very long, and he
didn't have the DaftShop storefront back in December when he sold the first
two. Couple of bidders got overexcited on the first one, but when he stuck
the second up right after it pretty much revealed they're fakes. I'm still
posting the column because (1) he did try to deceive people, and (2) after
all the crap he's thrown my way I just plain *want* to publicly humiliate

Based on his auction details (DaftShop Funny T-Shirts and Stuff, plus
the
obviously silly description) I would think it would be pretty obvious that
the
shirt is not authentic. Were his previous auctions this obvious?

Oh, I'll love to hear about that.

BTW, one dude actually bid on it. I told him it is a fake, referencing
your site. He wrote back that he asked the bidder about the authenticity
of the t-shirt and if he can't prove it to remove him from the bidders
 list. Apparently he did.

However, who in their right mind believes the story he put up for that
auction? He states he has a t-shirt store and then that he happens to
have found this brandnew looking Infocom shirt in a garage sale? How
 naive can people really be?

I can't believe it, has anyone reported this yet? Does Chris know? This guy is too much, especially considering he was in the wrong to begin with.
