Amid all this very interesting discussion about the US team for
Edmonton, please remember that the US is in the fortunate position of
being able to send the maximum of 3 athletes per event (if qualified).
As has been mentioned sometimes in the past, this is not true for most
other countries.

Maurice Greene announced yesterday that he would only run the first round of
the 100 here, thereby satisfying USATF's policy that requires those athletes
with wild-card status for the Worlds to participate in this week's

In 1973, the day before Rod's epic 8m 29s national record

Totally off this subject, but I didn't know Dixon had ever steepled.
He was world-class in the 1500/mile. Had some near WR-level 2 miles
Ryan Hall 3:42.70 qualified
Christopher Bennett 0.00 not qualified
Paul McMullen 0.00 not qualified

specifically to qualify distance runners for Nationals ...
In the 1500m, Paul McMullen ran (from my watch) a 3:42.7

While intelligent people can often simplify the complex, a fool is more
likely to complicate the simple.
One overlooked factor in Ritzenheim's case is that Michigan's rules on
high school athletics prevented him from running in more than two (?)
invitationals, which meant that he ran only one 5000m on the track this
spring. In other words, he missed the qualifier by less than a second

Back in 1968, they wouldn't let Bob Schul run the trials when he was
