Re: Amazon's Kendal Book Reader for the PC

2016-09-14 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk
I see that several of you re using the PC app. Can you register your PC
without sighted assistance. If so, how? I have not received any response
from anyone who has actually used Window-Eyes to read the registration boxes
on a PC. Some of you may have doneit years ago, but has anyone actually done
it in the past year? After I got my PC registered with sighted help, I had
trouble selecting books for download. I was using Internet Explorer 11. I
was so frustrated that I asked Customer Service to deregister my PC. Will
Chrome or Firefox work better? Again, some of you are doing this. I know I
am using the Accessibility plug-in because it is, by far, the largest of the
two files, and I have downloaded it from the link for accesibility. I am
using Window 7 64-bit Pro with WE 9.5.1. I haven't updated WE yet, but will
do so shortly. I would really like to know if there is something I am
missing with Window-Eyes. If you want to write off list, that's okay.
Thanks.

 Hello,

A few years ago, Amazon put out a program that was to have made Books,
in the Kendal format, readable by using Amazon's Book reader for the PC.

I did download this Reader, but found it lacking and ended up not using
 it.

Now that two or three years have gone by, does anyone on this list have
any recent experience with this Reader by Amazon?

Does it work? Are there issues I should know about? And of course,
does it work with Window Eyes or NVDA?

 Thanks for any comments,

I can say that the slow download would not have any thing to do with Window

things to do but still the same problem. I decided to do an emergency uninstall
of WE and reinstalled it, the problems went away. I would also scan for

So if anyelese is having this lets let them know and maybe will will

I know that it isn't A big major thing but it is still annoying non

So please look in to it and maybe we will get A fix for this.

Hi I see in this new update.
The problem with Thunderbird repeating itself hasn't been fixed.
You can open Thunderbird and then restart window-eyes and it will go away.
But if you have messages grouped by conversation and you expand A thread.
and the clasap it the repeating itself will start all over again.
It would be nice if this could get looked in to and done asway with.

I started out by using a Kindle Keyboard several years back. I don't use it
any more. The thing is, The Fire tablet has Ivona as it's tts and is a
better tts than the tts on the Kindle Keyboard. Also when it comes to
reading, the Fire tablet has a lot better navigation of books than the
Kindle Keyboard.

Subject: Amazon's Kendal Book Reader for the PC

Is there a way to get to the books I have purchased in Amazon? I've never

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Hi Grumpy Dave,

I have a better suggestion. You still purchase your Kindle books.
Instead of using the Amazon Kindle app, you can convert your files to
another format of your own choosing by using a program called Codex. I
am placing the link here. The program allows one to convert .pdf,
.epub, .azw or whatever file type the Amazon books are in, and other
formats from one to another. For example, you can even convert a .docx
to a .txt or .rtf. It is pretty easy to use and it can be run in the
Windows Explorer, at least on Win7 machines, through the context menu.
You set your default file type for output and when you select convert,
your file is automatically converted to the file you requested. There
is also an option to choose another file type without changing your
default. For example, you found a magazine article you wanted to read
quickly..save it as a .txt and read it quickly. So, finally, here is
the link:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5121410/Codex-2.0-setup.exe

Oh yes, I used it yesterday and was informed there is a newer version.
You can update it directly from the program.

Carol

Re: how to speed up web pages

2016-09-14 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk
One of the causes of this can be what's called a carousel. It's
essentially a slide show that continually cycles through content on the
page, such as the latest stories on a news site. I see this on my local
PBS site and so far there's nothing that can be done about it that I'm
aware of.

I don't know but I do get this behavior on some pages as well but not so

Hey guys,

Alright, my frustration is really growing, and i need your help with
finding a solution. I am finding more and more web pages are extremely
slow. I find that when i'm on a web page with the latest firefox and
window-eyes, i cn literally press the down or up arrow key, and
literally count seconds from when i depress the key until window-eyes
starts talking. I'll sit there and count, 1, 2, 3, etc. It's really
annoying. I find it particularly happens on newspaper and news sites.
How can i get rid of this problem. All i care about is the text.
Pictures and other stupid images mean absolutely nothing to me. Quite
frankly it's a huge time waster, and those little blocks of 30 seconds
add up during the course of a day when i'm trying to be productive. Any
solutions?

Does it work? Are there issues I should know about? And of course,

Either way, I just tried it again yesterday, and it still didn't work for
me. The menu system appears to be workable, but you can't register your PC
without sighted assistance.

It's Kindle, not Kendal.

2016-09-14 Thread bj colt via Talk

Hi Carol,

Can I ask where do the Kindle books go once you have bought them? I read
them on my iphone as the kindle app for the pc is not accessible for me.

Is there a way to get to the books I have purchased in Amazon? I've never
tried to access my books on amazon.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Live long and prosper, John

RE: how to speed up web pages

2016-09-14 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: I get that on some pages as well.
My guess is that these pages are loading continuing items like stories while
we are trying to read something like read line to read some text. I am
guessing that WE notices a change and then starts reading the pages
underlying tree from the top until it finds wherever the last line pointer
was and that could be really slow.
I don't know but I do get this behavior on some pages as well but not so
much on others.

Subject: how to speed up web pages

Any
solutions?

i: Yes, sometimes in a Webpage or even in a Desktop app I will be either
arrowing down through lines of text or tabbing around and WE will go dead
until I Restart it. In fact typing this WE went dead and I had to Restart it
to continue. Noted that after it came back an info message read that I was
not responding to the most recent message so perhaps it all has to do with
info bars, popups or something.
But, yes, this has been a new and frequent problem lately.
When WE is dead often Narrator is working, sometimes not but usually it will
work to indicate the computer itself is not locked up.

Subject: more web frustrations

Hey guys,

OK, i do not understand this at all. This happened all day today while
surfing the web. I went to google, cause that's my normal search
engine. I'll go to the search box type in my search, then tab over to
the search button. A few seconds later, google is saying 1 link, i'll
press the tab key to go through the results, and here comes silence The
only way to recover it, is to re-start window-eyes. I am running the
latest we and latest firefox. This is not right. Any ideas, anyone
else experiencing similar behavior?
