Re: help restoring XP computer
Hello Rod, That's interesting. I still have a box with Windows XP but I don't go on line with it because I don't have an antivirus program on it that works and because internet Explorer 8 is being blocked by many websites. How do I get that app and how do I use it? RE: from window eyesto jaws to NVDA
Brice, I don't care for Jaws; but, I think that the concept of installing a new copy of Jaws in a separate folder is a good thing. Yes, you're used to doing business one way in an older version; suppose for a second the new update breaks something that was working beautifully well? Hmm, you can just leave the new copy alone and still have a working screen reader 'cause you can revert to using the old one. This could have been a real issue way back when hard drives were barely 250MB and I am on top of the world thinking I had all bases covered; today, hard drives are up to 4TB and greater. As such, leaving two separate copies of Jaws on one DOES NOT hurt a fly--oh, sorry, it might hurt a fly trying to peak into my eyes! I wish Window-Eyes had adopted the same concept. But, it didn't! V F O is like any other company in the mainstream. I'll buy you off because you pose a threat from a competitive angle. Once your company is bought out, time to KILL IT or render it nearly worthless unless it has the potential to increase and improve the bottom line. Facebook, Google, eBay--they all do the same thing! Microsoft bought Nokia and pretty much killed it. Today, under some interesting licensing scheme with HMD, Nokia is trying to make a comeback to the cell phone industry on the Android platform. Well, it may jolly well succeed; after all, Windows phones were a dismal failure! EBay bought Skype, didn't know what to do with it, threw it away for Microsoft's grab. Next, it bought Paypal; same story all over. Now it's looking towards the prospects of acquiring Adyen, a Europe-based payment processor. Sprint picked up Nextel and MCI, killed them both. So, don't be surprised at what V F O is doing, it had leaders ahead of it who did likewise. Re: from window eyes to jaws to NVDA
I guess that depends on what you use. It's just down right terrible with Thunderbird. NVDA at this point is the best screen reader with TB. Tom has already commented about the UI. It still amazes me that FS's stupid installation program overwrites the shortcut every time forcing us to reset the shortcut hotkey. I have WE, JFW and NVDA on this machine with none of them starting automatically. At this point in time I use NVDA the most which does surprise me some. It seems reasonable to me to receive some support for costly programs. I decided to put Jaws on my laptop. I'd forgotten that I needed the code instead of my serial number to activate Jaws on the laptop. The email with the code came from a different address from the order so I was having difficulty finding it so I thought I'd try to call for help. I chose activation help from the menu. They had wait times so theyir system gave the option for them to call me back. Guess what, they never called me back and I finally found the code. It looks like their was a bit of a support honeymoon period once they dropped WE but it seems to be over already. VFO doesn't seem to be any better than FS. They could have learned from GW and AI since they bought them out but they just don't seem to be interested in any ideas that don't come from their old group. (smile) I learned macOS by simply grabbing a list of hot keys, and, with a little knowledge I gained here and there, I learned the underlying philosophy of VoiceOver, and so I just muddled through until, today, I can do anything I need to with the Mac. The biggest difference is that VoiceOver tends to act like a big mouse pointer, and, once you decide what you want to interact with, you press a VoiceOver hot key and then interact with the Window or the web page or system dialog or whatever. When you want to interact with something else, then you must back out of, or stop interacting with, what had been focused upon, and then start over again. We're used to Windows, where focus is always present, and so this is what you must accept is not true of macOS. However, because focus is not a necessity, it makes it possible for system dialogs to pop up, and so you tend to not miss important things happening on your system. I would say that macOS is perfectly accessible with VoiceOver, and so it is equivalent to Window-Eyes. To be honest, I think it is a beautiful experience when you see the thought which has gone into developing the macOS, which, I should add, is very, very similar to how IOS works, which is the OS of the iPod Tuch, the iPad and the iPhone. As Dennis has mentioned, there are tutorials which can help you learn macOS. 'David Woodbridge, a blind employee of ision Australia, has lots of podcasts on different Apple devices, pretty much all of them, in fact, and so he can take the blame for my buying a Mac. I started off with window bridge, and then I got window eyes about maybe fourteen years ago. I used older versions of jaws, but that was only when I was taking computer classes in the early 2000s or late 1990s. The other issue which makes me hesitate is Jaws' reliance on the insert key. I use a left-handed keyboard with the microsoft feature Sticky Keys and have never really understood how to incorporate the insert feature with the caps lock key, but I digress. Re: from window eyes to jaws to NVDA
Well said MR Netbat. Cheers Michael.
