Regardless of the email program you're using, the most reliable way to
forward an email is to highlight it in the list of messages, press the
Applications key, arrow down to Forward and press Enter.

Thunderbird key stroke, but maybe try it.

Ever since GW Micro rewrote Browse mode, if you press a key before a
page is loaded and your synthesizer stops reading it, the keystroke
is taken as a silence key. The second press works. If you wait for
things to settle down, the first press works. I hope GW Micro fixes
this in the next release--it's really annoying.

Here is what I found to change the default spacing in Word 2007.

Press alt p p g
This will stop on allign
Tab until you get to line spacing (about 9 presses of the tab key)
up and down arrow until you get the setting you want.
Tab four more times to default and press enter.
You will get a prompt about changing settings. If you are sure this is
what you want, press enter on OK.
Tab to the OK button and press enter.
Your new setting should come up each time you open a new document.
Unfortunately, I do not know if there are any other shortcuts available
to make permanent changes.

If you only want to change spacing for specific documents, press
control-number row 1 for single spacing,
control-number row 2 for double spacing and
control-number row 5 for 1.5 spacing. Hope this helps.

Subject: To Doug and the others at GW Micro

Hello Doug,

I am not thrilled about the blending of A I Squared and Freedom
Scientific. but, it looks like it will be happening, and so I can only
hope for the best.

I have no idea what Trials you and Dan suffered through, all these years
of attempting to provide a very good Screen Reading program, first for
DOS and then for the many flavors of Windows.

People can be Unthankful and still be incredibly Demanding. As many
Comedians might say, the Blind are a hard Crowd to please.

I forget when I bought Vocal eyes, the Dos Screen Reader. Sometime in
the early to mid 90's.

Before then, I had bought and used two or three other Screen Readers.
Once I started using Vocal eyes and then Window eyes, I was comfortable
with what it provided, and especially with the great Customer Service
and Tech Support. Perhaps it is the Indiana culture, but almost always,
I felt like those attempting to provide good service to me were doing
the best they could, which is all I was expecting.

Because of your program, I was able to be employed for almost 25 years,
in a real job, doing real work, working for a real Company, and not some
charity or Government job where I filled a Quota for Hiring the
handicapped.

this was important to me, and without a high quality Screen Reader, I
would not have been able to pull my own weight, and be an asset to the
Company.

I would sincerely like to Thank you and Dan, and the others at the old GW
Micro for having an Old Fashiond approach to serving your Customer Base.
I for one, benefitted from all of GW Micro's efforts.

As all of us go forward, I guess time will tell just how smoothly the
blending of Window-eyes and Jaws will turn out.

I have many years of being quite Spoiled with Good Service, and I am a
very Difficult Customer if Quality Control is taken lightly by
Management. Receiving a Buggy program has never been something that
makes me Happy.

Onward we all go, and I hope for the best when it comes to the future of
Window-Eyes and its Customers.

Grumpy Dave Heilman

Re: Windows live mail going away question

2016-05-12 Thread Patricia Krinke via Talk

Hi,

Following is the message I received and hopes it relieves your minds:

It appears that you are currently using Windows Live Mail 2012 to connect to
your Out‍look‍.‍com account. Windows Live Mail 2012 does not support the
synchronization technologies used by the new Outl‍ook‍.‍com.
When account upgrades begin at the end of June, you will no longer be able
to receive email sent to your Out‍look‍.‍com account in Windows Live Mail
2012.
Rest assured, you can always access your email by logging into
Out‍look‍.‍com from any web browser, and you will continue to have access to
all your data that is currently in Windows Live Mail 2012.

If you currently use Windows Live Mail 2012, we recommend that you
switch to the Mail app in Windows
to‍day. The Mail app is built in to Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10, and has a
more modern design. To begin using it, simply launch the app and add your
Out‍look‍.‍com account.

If you are using Windows 7, you can
upgrade to a newer version of Windows
to enjoy the Mail app and the other benefits. If you do not wish to upgrade,
you can access your account via a web browser, or, you can take advantage of
a

free one-year subscription of Office 365 Personal
, and use Outl‍ook 2016 to connect to your account.* This Off‍ice 365
subscription also includes other productivity applications such as Word,
PowerPoint and Excel. It works on Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, and Windows 10.

Please take action before
Ju‍ne 30
th
, 2016
, which is when we’ll begin upgrading accounts that currently use Windows
Live Mail 2012. If you have more questions, please find answers to common
FAQs in this

help article
, or you can contact Microsoft
support
.

We recognize that changes like this can be difficult, and apologize for any
inconvenience this causes you. We hope that you’ll enjoy the benefits of
moving to the new Outl‍ook‍.‍com.

Microsoft has ramped up their staffing to improve accessibility of the

Edge browser later this year. I suspect that is one of the reasons they will
allow vision-impaired Windows users to upgrade to Windows 10 after the July

HELLO, TOM,

Is that better? We miss you and your sense of humor!!

We have no idea why we lost power, but it’s interesting to find out how
people amuse themselves when they can’t see to read or play games and the
T.V. doesn’t work! Dick is fascinated with weather, so he gave me updates
on the skies even though I could hear the thunder and read my talking book
due to a battery. (smile) I could have played cards, too, but Dick can’t
read braille!

We will say “hello” to Herb for you. You, apparently, made a great
impression on him. He remembered your names and where you sat!

Oh, we do hope you get to go out for dinner, again! That reminds me that I
need to make a luncheon reservation at the Lake Elmo Inn for our 48th
celebration. Our favorite waitress graduated with her Master’s and now work
as a social worker, so we had to find a new “favorite.” Jody is trying to
fit the bill, so we’ll give her another order.

The first year of gardening in a new area is like a test: You and Mary will
pass, but some of the vegetables will have to be held back!

You know that politics and religion are off limit topics! The young (53) man
across the street always tells his mother where she is wrong, she listens
and does what she wants to do. They are crazy about each other, and he is
very protective of her. They are fun to watch. (laugh)

No, Mary did not tell me that she was on oxygen. Is that because of the
LAM? I admire her! And she can handle Washington, C.C., and anything else
she chooses to get involved with.

Serving coffee is a great place or you—you are friendly, have a great sense
of humor (did I mention that before?), and psychology is right up your
alley! Psychology and friendliness probably helps you push the wheelchairs,
too.

Did you find another art class to join? Would your artistic creations be
given to a Lam fund raiser?

Hot and humid weather does make everybody uncomfortable. Your rainfall is
below average? According to the National Weather Service, you get rain
storms all the time! Of course, the NWS is usually wrong about our weather!
Is the weather and bending over the worst having to your back?

Has Tom, Jr. gone back on his meds?

Thinking that John can do well at whatever he tries, it is Amazon’s loss not
to have hired him full-time. It’s hard to see what God is doing. Right now
does Gianna (your bias is showing) living full-time with John? Is a social
worker involved and one who could speak on behalf of John to the judge?
Naturally, Ginny blames John; otherwise, she would have to take at least
some of the blame. Is Ginny living with her parents? Oh, dear!

We enjoyed your note, miss you, and keep you in our prayers,

Trish?

Subject: A Little Morality tale: It's Not Always Microsoft's Fault!

So last night, I did my little Internet radio thing on the Legend, and I
noticed that the Station Playlist app for Window-eyes was running but not
working. I blamed the failure on a recent Windows 10 update, presuming that
the update had erased all my key bindings or had taken over keystrokes that
were once used by the Station Playlist app. I grumbled and groused about
Windows 10 updates to my poor beleaguered listeners off and on, convinced
that the fault was surely Microsoft’s.

When I came off the air, I dug a little deeper into the Window-eyes
environment and found that for whatever reason, GW Toolkit wasn’t running at
all. That would explain in a big way why there were no working keystrokes in
the Station Playlist app.

With no small amount of chagrin and plenty of dip for that crow I was
gagging down, I ran GW Toolkit, reopened Station Playlist, brought up a list
as if I were about to be on the air, chewed another beak or two of that
nasty crow, and proceeded to watch as Jeff Bishop’s scripts worked
flawlessly—all my keystrokes were back and in good working order.

I share this hopefully as an attempt at brightening your day just a bit. If
you, too, have made a similar mistake of not checking the status of GW
Toolkit, finding it easier instead to blame Microsoft, you need to know you’re
not alone in that. And just so you know, crow meat that comes from
Washington state is no more appetizing than the same unfortunate dish from
anywhere else. :-)

Double check your GW Toolkit status, my friends, before you despair of ever
seeing your app’s keystrokes work well again. I have to admit to being
rather stunned that Toolkit wasn’t running. I don’t remember killing it for
any reason. Here’s hoping it comes up and runs automatically from now on.

Nolan, who is somewhat humbled and chastened by his experience, and who
doesn’t recommend crow regardless of the dip recipe you have or whether it
comes from Washington state or wherever!

Hi Everyone,

I hope this message finds you all well. As the subject says, I will be
leaving Ai Squared. After serving with this team for nearly 12 years, my
final day will be Friday, October 28. I have decided to take a job with
Interactive Accessibility. While I won't be part of Ai Squared any more, I
want you all to know that it has been an honor to serve our customers. I
plan to continue to stay active in the assistive technology community, and I
don't plan to be a stranger.

As one of my favorite Bible verses says, "In their hearts humans plan their
course, but the Lord establishes their steps" (Proverbs 16:9). I am looking
forward to the new challenges and people that God has in store for me.

Warm Regards and God Bless,

Subject: New app - Easy Calendar 1.0!

Hi everyone,

I would like to let you know about a new app I've just submitted: it's
called Easy Calendar!

Here's how to find and install it:

Open the Apps menu in the Window-Eyes control panel, arrow down to AppGet,
and press Enter twice to load the list of available apps.
Then, press Control-F to open the search dialog, place my name "Rod Hutton"
in the Author field, and ensure that all of the other edit boxes are empty.
Tab to the Find button, press Enter, and you should then see a treeview of
several categories of apps; these are the categories into which my apps have
been placed in the App Central repository.

Now, find the General category, press right arrow to expand this category,
and arrow down to Easy Calendar.
Finally, tab over to the Install button, and press Enter to install Easy
Calendar..

At the end of this email message, I've pasted the first part of the
documentation for Easy Calendar, just to whet your appetite, and possibly to
help you decide whether you'd be interested in taking it for a test drive.

I hope you enjoy this app; it is, in fact, a labour of love, as indeed are
all of my apps, but I share them, as always, to help make life easier for
those of us who push on despite, or perhaps due to, overwhelming odds.
(smile)

Enjoy, and all the best,

Rod Hutton, and please read on for the app introduction

Welcom to Easy Calendar!

This app speaks the information associated with calendar events stored in a
text file, and which you can edit easily using your favorite text editor.
While you can still use other calendar software to manage your appointments
and other important events, the real power of this app is how easily and
quicly you can record an event in Easy Calendar, and have its details spoken
to you, either before, or when, the event takes place.

Quick Start

Easy Calendar stores its calendar events in the text file
Easy_Calendar_Events.txt; you can open this file either using a hot key
(Control-Alt-F8, by default) or from the Easy Calendar pull-down on the
Window-Eyes Apps menu; regardless which method you use, the file will open
in the application associated with text files on your system.

Easy Calendar is a tool for manually speaking the events you record in the
events file; it does not pop up dialogs or alerts.

All Calendar events for the current day are spoken using the SpeakEvents hot
key (Alt-F8, by default); pressing this key repeatedly will cause the
individual events for the current day to be spoken, until you press any
other key to return to batch mode.

Use the hot keys PreviousDay (F9, by default) and NextDay (F10, by default)
to set the day whose events you want spoken; the day you set stays in effect
until you change it.

When first installed, the events file contains text which is formatted in a
special way so that the app will speak messages on certain days; you can
review the events file to get a sense of how events are formatted; however,
to avoid problems, it is recommended that you read the detailed discussion
of how to format events later in this documentation; for now, it is enough
to say that Easy Calendar events have a header preceded by a return
character, and with a colon at the end of the line, the event's message text
is below the header, and any number of blank lines keep calendar events
separated.

Easy Calendar comes preconfigured to read events at medium rate and without
punctuation to make events easy to understand for most people; however, if
you prefer to use your current speech settings, choose the Capture option
from the Speech parameters for speaking events sub-menu in the Easy Calendar
Apps menu pull-down.

The events file, Easy_Calendar_Events.txt, being a text file, can be moved
to a shared folder (such as DropBox) so that it can be accessed by more than
one computer; use the Events file location sub-menu to change or restore its
location; keep in mind that if you restore the location of the events file
to its default location (the Window-Eyes Profiles folder) on any of the
computers which had been sharing it, this will prevent it from being
accessed by other computers. A more detailed discussion of changing the
events file location can be found later in this documentation.

One event header which is not present in the events file when the app is
first installed, but which you will most likely want to use right away, is
for a specific date. An example of this event header is:

January 1, 2017:

You will notice that the events file contains event headers similar to the
above, but they are missing a year; this makes them annually repeating
events, whereas event headers containing a year are unique and
non-repeating.

Another event header you may wish to use right away is

Subject: Email programs, Your Choice?

Hello,

For those of you who have used more than one Email program, if you have
an opinion as to which program you like the best, would you share that
opinion?

I currently use Becky, and it works, but it has its quirks.

I used Eudora a very long time, but grew tired of jumping through the
Hoops needed to make it work in the next version of MS Windows. And
the 7.1 version has a few Bugs that never were fixed before the Company
retired Eudora.

Windows Live Mail is used by some, but Microsoft has just said that
Windows Live Mail will no longer be supported,. I would still use it,
if WLM is quick and simple to use.

The Email program that comes in Win 10 is an alternative to Windows Live
Mail. I have not looked at it yet, but have listened to a video about
it. Kind of a functional no fancy features kind of program. I might
check it out, providing it works well enough with Window Eyes.

And then there is Thunderbird. I used Thunderbird about four years ago.
Had it at work and I never liked it much, especially the Spell Checker.
I like getting a list of word possibilities, and if I recall,
Thunderbird doesn't give much in the way of a list.

However, several updates have come and gone since I used it, and so if
any here use Thunderbird and love it. Tell me why you love it.
Also The Window Eyes Support for Thunderbird might be better today than
in the past. I like a program where the Screen Reader allows me to read
the screens well. Moving around with the Tab key doesn't take me into
areas the Screen Reader doesn't read etc.

And if there are any Email programs I haven't mentioned, and you use
them, and like them, would you tell me about them as well?

Thanks for any opinions.

Grumpy Dave

Subject: problem using Windows Live Mail

Hi everyone,
I have a problem with Windows Live Mail. I am not able to select and
copy/paste, or cut-and-paste text into another program such as Microsoft
Word, or Notepad. Nothing happens. Is there an attribute in Live Mail that
I need to change for this to work? This is the only program I am having
this kind of difficulty with. I know about using ctrl-c after selecting
some text, and using ctrl-v to paste it. What happens is that when I hold
down the shift key to select a line of text, I don’t hear “selected” after
the line is read by Window-Eyes.

I have been cutting and pasting text or copying and pasting it ever since I
first started using a computer in the early 1990’s, so this is not a new
concept to me. I can therefore only conclude that the problem must be with
the Windows Live Mail program itself.

I am using Window-Eyes 9.5.4—the version you can download for free with
Microsoft Office. I’m using Windows 7.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi Dennis,

I am having a huge problem signing up to the new group. I add my email
address and then press enter on verify email. I wait and wait and wait and
wait. For days and I don't get any verification email. I wonder if more
people are getting the same problem?

Is there any way you can help with this problem please?

Press Ctrl-Alt-0 once in order to disable the Insert-Key layout.
Press it again if this turns out not to be the problem.
Normally, that layout should be disabled.

Hi,

It seems some of the WE hot keys are missing and I have no reason why this
has happened. The hot keys are: time instert+t; status cntrl-shift-s; and
the status line says "speak all" with insert+s. There may be more which I
have not discovered. I hav restarted my laptop and there was no change. If
anyone else is having this problem or knows howto fix this, I would
appreciateany and all suggestions or help. I am using Windows 10 and MS
Office 2013.

Have a blessed day!

Subject: New standard keyboard coming to Narrator

Welcome to your new Narrator keyboard layout (June 2018)
The Narrator team is pleased to announce some major changes to the way
that you interact with Narrator.
We wanted to make it easier for you to learn and use Narrator, so we’re
building on the knowledge you may have acquired using other screen
readers. In this release, we’re introducing the new Standard keyboard
layout for Narrator. We’re bringing these changes to Insider builds, and
we want your feedback.
Here are some highlights:
Narrator now lets you use either the Caps lock or Insert keys as your
Narrator modifier key. So, from now on, we’ll refer to these modifier
keys as the Narrator key.
The Change View commands have been updated. Change View commands are now
mapped to the Narrator key + Page up and Page down keys. You can also
use Change View by pressing Narrator key + Control + Up arrow and Down
arrow. Move Next and Move Previous haven’t changed.
Scan Mode’s Primary and Secondary Action commands have changed. Primary
Action can be executed by pressing Enter or Spacebar. You can complete
Secondary Action by simply adding a Shift key to each of those keys
(Shift + Enter or Shift + Spacebar). You’ll see this change regardless
of the keyboard layout you select.
Narrator’s page, paragraph, line, word and character commands have been
changed in our new Standard keyboard layout. In addition, many of
Narrator’s commands have been moved to be more mnemonic. Some have also
been moved to align to keystrokes that are more familiar to screen
reader users.
You can now use the numeric keypad to issue Narrator commands. We’ll
talk more about this later.
We’ve added a few new commands for Narrator, including List of Links,
List of Headings, List of Landmarks and Narrator Find.
Several new Scan Mode keyboard commands have been added to allow you to
select text.
Several of Narrator’s keyboard commands for moving to Links, Headings,
and Tables have been deprecated from the Standard keyboard layout. These
commands are still available in Scan Mode and Change View. We’ve also
deprecated the ”Move to last item in containing area” command.
To keep your keyboard layout the same, go to Settings > Ease of Access >
Narrator, and choose the Legacy layout. This will revert Narrator to the
experience that shipped in the Windows April 2018 release. Please note
that new Narrator commands in this release will not be available in the
Legacy keyboard layout if keystrokes for legacy commands conflict with
those used in our new Narrator features.
Keep reading to learn more about these changes
The upgrade experience
When you upgrade to this version of Windows and turn on Narrator, a
dialog will pop up that gives you some information about the changes
we’ve made to the Narrator keyboard. Check the box next to “Do not show
this again” if you don’t want to see it again.
The Narrator key
In this release, we’ve made some changes to the Narrator modifier key.
We’ll refer to it as the Narrator key throughout Narrator settings and
in documentation going forward.
By default, the Caps lock and Insert keys will be available as your
Narrator key. If you’re using a 106 Japanese keyboard, then the
NonConvert and Insert keys can be used as your Narrator key. This is a
change from prior releases where the Control and Alt keys were used as
Narrator’s modifier keys.
Narrator settings changes
We’ve added a new heading in Narrator settings called “Choose keyboard
settings.” You can get to it in Scan Mode by using the H key to move to
the heading. You’ll find these settings there:
Select keyboard layout
This setting allows you to select your Narrator keyboard layout. By
default, the Standard keyboard layout is selected. If you want to return
to the keyboard layout from the April 2018 release, select the Legacy
layout.
Note: You can select the “Learn about the different Narrator keyboard
layouts” link to learn more about the changes to the Narrator keyboard.
In the Windows Insider build you are testing this link will send you to
the current public-facing Narrator user guide. The documentation you’re
reading now will be merged into the Narrator user guide when we ship the
final release later this year.
Select Narrator modifier key
This setting allows you to determine the keys used as Narrator’s
modifier key. The following options are available:
Caps lock and Insert (the default setting)
Insert
Caps lock
If you’re using a 106 Japanese keyboard, the settings will be:
NonConvert and Insert (the default setting)
Convert
Insert
NonConvert
Note: If you choose the Legacy keyboard layout, this setting won’t be
available. The Caps lock key will be available and the Ctrl + Alt
Narrator key modifier will be used for Japanese keyboard users when in
the Legacy keyboard layout.

in the message to a web link, like on DropBox, from which it can be
downloaded or simply played.

Best,

Okay, then, with the message open, are you able to press Alt-F in order to
open the File menu, and then can you arrow down to Save, attachments?

Hi Trish,

If you're in the message body, try Shift-Tabbing once and see if you land on
a button labelled "attachments."
If you do, you should be able to press Space on it and get a context menu
with options for handling them.

Patricia,

Besides pressing ALT and then using RIGHT ARROW to get to HELP, you should
be able to press ALT-H and then DOWN ARROW until you hear about, and then
press ENTER to open it.
q
Once you get to the "About" dialog, you should be able to TAB through the
dialog and one of the read-only edit boxes should contain your serial
number. Is it the "About" menu that is causing the problem or is getting
there the problem.

patricia, the Control-Backslash does indeed open correctly. When in that
window, you could have pressed the key for the menu. I label this
second level. The first level is where you perform all sorts of
configurations to Window-Eyes--Example, you can change keyboard settings,
cursor functions, et al.

Perhaps I may have inadvertently deleted your original post: What exactly
were you expecting to land on when you invoke the Control-Backslash
keystroke?

If you select the whole line of text, copy it to the clipboard, you can

You open the Run dialog box by holding down the Windows key and pressing the

Once you paste the command into the Run dialog box, you would press Enter to

Then, you would read the whole Window using Ctrl-Shift-W.
Once you have heard the version information, press Enter to activate the Ok

Pat,

Although you would probably know if the upgrade worked, it is worth noting
that the version number shown probably won't clearly say "version 10". In
my case, it says "Version 1703." However, the dialog box that I get does
refer to Windows 10 in the text portion. If you did try to install it
before, you might be able to start the install again without a charge since
some of the components are probably already downloaded. One of the most
common reasons for an upgrade not to work is that Windows detected software
that needs to be uninstalled first. This often includes old versions of
screen readers like JAWS and Window-eyes. Whether you could restart the
upgrade without a charge probably depends upon how far you got when you
tried it last time. You might be able to get the Microsoft Disability
Answer Desk to help you sort this out at

800-936-5900

Or go to their website at

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/disability-answer-desk

where you can launch a chat session.

Re: Version Question

Thank you, Rod.

Apparently, getting the free copy of Windows 10 didn't work ... sometime in
the future maybe I will get Windows 10.

Hi Patricia,

Here's a line of text which is a command.
Winver | more
If you select the whole line of text, copy it to the clipboard, you can
paste it into the Run dialog box.
You open the Run dialog box by holding down the Windows key and pressing the
letter R.
Once you paste the command into the Run dialog box, you would press Enter to
execute the command.
Then, you would read the whole Window using Ctrl-Shift-W.
Once you have heard the version information, press Enter to activate the Ok
button to close the dialog.

Best,

Rod

How can I tell which version of Windows I have?

I did have Windows 7 but did try to install Windows 10. However, nothing

Windows 10.

Thank you,

Hi,

Repeat filter is under screen settings, repeat filter. I am using
advanced settings, so you might need to temporarily change that setting
to see what I am talking about. To do this, press alt h and then the
letter v to turn on advanced settings. Once you find the setting you
want and save your new setting change, turn off advanced settings again
with the same keystrokes, alt h and then v.

OpenBook is a scan and read software that works with your traditional
scanner and/or with their own camera system called Pearl. It takes printed
text and converts to synthesized text.
