pronunciation query
Using Win7 with WE 9.5.4. I noticed recently that when reading documents where an apostrophy-s occurs after a name ending with the letter h that the apostrophy-s is not spoken in normal reading mode. Two examples: Jehovah’s Isaiah’s. If I do a word by word cursor they do speak the apostrophy-s. Of course, words or names ending with another letter followed by the apostrophy-s do seem to read normally, i. e. brother’s, sister’s, Rod’s, and Tom’s. The question is: Is there a fix or is this just something that needs a fix? Now that I am aware of the problem I am able to deal with it as needed. Hope to find answers for three issues
Hi listers, I have three issues I hope to get resolved. Using win7 on a 32 bit PC with Window-Eyes 9.5.4 and WLM. 1. When I boot up I get the Window-Eyes start up sounds but no Desktop menu. If I press the control-numpad5 command it says "unknown". To get the menu to speak I must press control-D and Window-Eyes then speaks and reads the desktop menu. Question: Is there someway of getting Window-Eyes to read the desktop on start up as it used to do? 2. When I select "MyDocuments" or other subdirectories, again the ability to cursor up and down the directory is apparently locked and silent. Pressing the alt-spacebar-x command does not seem to work 99% of the time when this happens. Going back to the menu, often 2, 3, or more times eventually will get Window-Eyes to read the directory and allow up and down cursoring. Question: Is there some fix for this problem? 3. Using WLM, I oftent get double readings of an email when I open it up. I think I remember someone else mentioning this problem before. Question: What is the solution for this problem? Thanks Much! Greetings Grumpy Dave, I recently have been having a similar problem using win7 on a 32bit machine. Two things I discovered are: 1. If I press the windows+d keys for bringing up the desktop menu I then get normal speech and am able to use Window-Eyes 9.5.3 more or less as usual. If you find this works for you also, it may be that something significant has changed in the win7 programs and/or window-Eyes ability to deal with some changes in MS win7. Response to Dve about WindowEyes and and the Shark
Hi dave, You have many good points with respect to business expenses and compotition. Unfortunately, The Shark got the government involved in purchasing their product and so made it difficult for other screen reader programs to be as well funded as VFO is. I suspect that because the government is so involved with JFW it will be the primary product for VFO dispite our preferences. Grandpa DOS will never purchase the Shark, but if I change, it will probably be to NVDA or perhaps Narrator should I have the money to spend. The other unfortunate thing is that all those who have taxable income will be paying for the Shark anyway. To often big business and government work hand-in-hand. Weep out loud! Fw: Microsoft Warns Windows 7 Has A Serious Problem (the article)
Hello there. The Forbes article was hidden behind some "Welcome" script that wouldn't remove itself unless I allowed its site to save cookies on my machine, which I did not do. But, I did end up finding a text feed of the article. What follows below (which describes Microsoft's new "strong-arm" tactic) is that article. Hope this helps. Jan 2, 2016 @ 05:30 PM Microsoft Warns Windows 7 Has Serious Problems Gordon Kelly , Contributor Speaking to Windows Weekly, Microsoft Marketing chief Chris Capossela explained that users who choose Windows 7 do so “at your own risk, at your own peril” and he revealed Microsoft has concerns about its future software and hardware compatibility, security and more. “We do worry when people are running an operating system that’s 10 years old that the next printer they buy isn’t going to work well, or they buy a new game, they buy Fallout 4, a very popular game, and it doesn’t work on a bunch of older machines,” Capossela stated. “And so, as we are pushing our ISV [Independent Software Vendor] and hardware partners to build great new stuff that takes advantage of Windows 10 that obviously makes the old stuff really bad and not to mention viruses and security problems.” He also stressed it is “so incredibly important to try to end the fragmentation of the Windows install base” and to get users to a “safer place”. There’s only one problem with Capossela’s statements: they are complete rubbish. Windows 7 is no less secure than Windows 10 (it will be supported until 2020) and no less compatible with new hardware and software. In fact its far greater market share means it is developers’ priority and has greater compatibility with legacy programmes and peripherals. If Fallout 4 won’t run on your Windows 7 computer, it will be upgrading your components not installing Windows 10 which fixes that. As for fragmentation, the only issue that creates is for Microsoft and its target of getting one billion devices running Windows 10 within 2-3 years of release. And this is where the true motivation for Capossela’s statements become clear: “We think every machine that is capable of running Windows 10 we should be doing everything we possibly can to get people to move to Windows 10…We are going to try to find that right balance, but we just know there’s a lot of people out there who constantly kick the can down the street without a little bit more of a, frankly, a push. And so, there’s no doubt with a base as big as ours, it is hard to move anyone to a new model without angering some people. We don’t want to anger anybody, but we do feel a responsibility to get people to a much better place, and Windows 10 is a much better place than Windows 7. We will always give you a way out, but we’re trying to find the right threat balance.” This phrase – “threat balance” – is telling. Microsoft has been cranking up the pressure on Windows 7 and Windows 8 users to upgrade and, in my opinion, the ‘balance’ was replaced by ‘threat’ a long time ago due to mandatory Windows 10 downloads, automatic upgrade attempts and now Capossela’s claims which add up to nothing more than deliberate misinformation designed to unsettle users. As I’ve written before, at its core Windows 10 is a very capable operating system with immense promise but it is also overly controlling and I can respect those Windows 7 and Windows 8 users who choose to stay where they are. And this is the part Microsoft has forgotten: technically it keeps giving users a choice, but by enforcing nagging pop-ups, cutting opt-out options and spreading groundless fear for the average user it appears there is no choice at all… ___ Any views or opinions presented in this email are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Ai Squared. I cannot input directly using braille to the computer. I do not know if this is because of the technology of the Braille Edge or Window-Eyes. The Braille Edge has a built-in Note Pad. For the Note Pad, you can write in braille. The Note Pad uses a SD card for storing all your files etc. So what I do is take the SD card out and insert it into my computer where I can transfer files both to and from the SD card. So in that sense you can write in braille and get it to your computer. I am happy with it. While I won't be putting any money down right away, I'm in a position where I'm able to put funds aside with the idea of purchasing sometime in early Spring, 2016. The main criteria required in a Braille display for me are: 1. that it have Bluetooth Connectivity along with USB connectivity. That way, I can connect the display using Bluetooth to work with my MacBook Pro, iPhone and via USB to my Windows 8.1 machine which I'll be upgrading to Windows 10 early in 2016. 2. That it work with Window-Eyes. While I have JAWS on my PC and of course, use VoiceOver on the Mac and the iPhone, Window-Eyes is the primary screen reader I use on the PC. 3. That the display offer Braille input capability to the computer and the phone. While it's something I wouldn't use as often as other features, having the ability to do input using Grade II Braille would be an important nice to have feature. Also, while I'm not looking for a full-fledged notetaker, if the display have the capability where I can use it to take some toes then transfer these to the computer, that would be nice. 4. the display needs to have at least 20 cells. I will be using this unit for, among other things, reading information during ACB Board meetings and in other settings. I'd be looking for a unit with at least 20 cells, 32 would be preferred. Two displays which have been suggested to me are the Brailliant by HumanWare and the Braille Edge. I'll be prepared to spend up to about $2,500. I'd like to know if people have other display ideas that you think would meet my needs. Please try and let me know who makes a given display; I have access to some distributors nearby so want to be able to see demonstrations of displays before I put my money down if possible. If you would prefer to communicate about this via phone, please email me privately with a phone number and best times to call and I'll reach out to you; I'm in the U.S. Central time zone. updating of Window 7 HaHa!
Hi listers, I have a 32biyt PC still running Win7 Home Premium Service Pack 1. For some reason I cannot explain at the moment, I decided to install and run Virtual View. I could not get it to work, and, so I called AISquared and Dave helped me install all the necessary parts. After that he discovered that I did not have any “Windows Features” in my system. HMMM! I called Microsoft Disabilities and they re-installed Win7 with the Windows Features. Even with the “TIFF” feature turned on nothing seemed to work. Well, I also discovered that during the update of Win7 my HP Laser Jet software was voided, my Duxbury Braille Translater settings changed, and many of my directories/subdirectories relocated. With the gracious help of Peter at IRTI, Chris Grabowsky and sighted members of the family after about 5 days I was finally able to get most things back into a familiar working order. OT: reading attachments in WLM
Greetings, I have a MagicJack phone and when messages are left on it, it sends a message.wav file to my email account. The text part of the message says I can double click the attachment to listen to the message or save it to my PC. Can anybody tell me how to double click or listen to the .wav attachment without saving it? I am using WE 9.2 with Windows Live Mail 2012 and a win7 32 bit PC. Thanks for any help you may provide. reading Hebrew or Greek letters questions
I have been adviced to purchase Vocalizer Express in order to get Window-Eyes to pronounce Hebrew and Greek alphabet letters. I am not necessarily interested in listening to the languages spoken, only the letters of occasional words which occur in Briefs that I am reading and/or editing. Either speech or braille display would be useful. Thanks for any practical suggestions with which you may have had experience. Grant Bartimaeus Alliance of the Blind, Inc. Re: Screen Reader History
I first started with a word progessor program written by William Brunot for his blind wif in 1985. Soon I learned about VideoVoice wirtten by a blind Programmer, Deborah Norling. Before long I discovered Chuck Hallenbeck's Provox which I was using until 2013 when my Toshiba laptop died. However, along the way in 1998 the computer lab instructor at the Eat Bay Center for the Blind, Connie Skeen, insisted that I learn to use Window Eyes and Win95-98. Because of my reluctance to leave the MS DOS environment she nickmaned me Grandpa DOS. My daughter Pam and I took a Turbo Pascal programming class together 1989 and a Dos batch file programming class in 1994. I have greatly appreciated what Doug and his crew have done over the years and will continue using Window Eyes, however, I haven't forgotten that Free DOS is out there and maybe, just maybe I will go gack. Smile! And that's my story and I'm stickin' to it. Grant, A.K.A. I remember that I really wanted a Sounding Board from Computer Aids Corporation which Dan designed. For a short time I was sad when I learned that CA had closed down. Doug and Dan got GW Micro rolling and the first thing I did when I got my first IT job was to order that Sounding Board, Vocal-Eyes 1.0, their Braille Talk braille translation program, and the Noteworthy and calcworthy programs they had. GW's products really helped make it possible for me to earn a good living. On 8/2/2015 7:30 PM, David Goldfield via Talk wrote: Jeff, Thank you for sharing that amazing piece of history. Malcom came up with the name Vocal-Eyes and later sold the program to Computer Aids Corporation. However, they were strict on including the word talk in most all their software so it became Screen Talk. Later, I was pleased when GW Micro picked up and used the name Vocal-Eyes. A SET file was about 128 bytes long, and I edited some of them with Edlin for better compatibility with my Votrax Personal Speech System. Many times I'm amazed that this Windows stuff works at all. Windows 3.1 came out in 1990, and the first screen reader for Windows was OutSpoken, which was first demonstrated in July of 1992. Window-Eyes for Windows 3.1 came out in 1995, and it could first run Windows 95 in 1997. cursor movement issues
Greetings, Using WE9.1 on a 32bit PC. I have been having problems with my cursor moving up or down the list of files in a directory or subdirectory. When opening a directory or subdirectory often pushing the cursor provides no speech or movement down the list. The same thing is true when I press a the letter beginning a filename. Sometimes closing the directory and returning to the desktop will solve the problem, sometimes not. Also rebooting often solves the problem for a time. I have found no satisfactory solution for this very annoying issue. Thank you for providing helpful solutions. Grant Bartimaeus Alliance of the Blind, Inc.
