RE: Learning JAWS and NVDA

2017-09-01 Thread Sky Mundell via Talk
Also there is a JAWS search feature, insert space, and the letter J. Once
you do that, a search box will come up. Then, you can type in a function,
and JAWS will display the function in a virtual viewer, and it will also
give you the links for you to activate that function, and it will say the
hot key for that function. So, for example, if you wanted to look up the
word title, you'd press insert space, J, then type title, and it would say
"read title of application: link insert T." At that point, you can press
either insert t or just press enter on the link. I hope this helps, Sky.

In learning JAWS as a WE user, my biggest problem is learning the JAWS menus
and settings. I find it hard to find what I need. Some are not as
descriptive as I would like. I do like the Microsoft mobile voice Mark, I
find it responsive and easy to listen to.
I find that NVDA and JAWS have some similarities. I find that NVDA does some
things better than JAWS.

I do want to get a working knowledge of both screen readers just in case WE
stops working in future releases of Windows. But right now still like WE
best.

2017-05-17 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
To get to the dictionary manager, press insert-f2 and arrow down to dictionary
manager.

When you open it, you can choose to modify pronunciation for the current
application or the whole system. If you want to modify the whone system, press
ctrl-shift-d and make sure it says “default.jdf”. Then, you have a tree view
of languages. Arrow down through it and you’ll get to English. Use right
arrow to open English and you’ll have choices for a couple synthesizers to
modify pronunciations for that synthesizer. Then, all the other words show up.
You can tab to buttons to change or remove, if I remember correctly.

Hi James,
Haven't downloaded Jaws yet but very interested in your statement below
regarding > Jaws key plus D, to get in to the currently focused
application dictionary.

Does that mean that there would be a separate dictionary for each time,
say, that Firefox was loaded?

I find the extended dictionary in WE very useful because it loads when a
particular Window is loaded. e.g. The browser is not important but when
a particular site is loaded the dictionary for the voice and site is
activated.

Does the Jaws dictionary work something like this?

Thanks
Neville.

Hi Ted:

There’s good news on this one.

JAWS supplies most of its training materials in DAISY format. They can be
downloaded through the FS Reader program which comes with JAWS.The
training materials are also supplied on the JAWS DVD.There’s over 11
hours of basic training material available (no, you won’t need to listen
to all of it).

You can either use FS Reader to play the material or your own DAISY
player.

You don’t have to switch between your program and FS Reader to pause,
resume, rewind or fast-forward. Here’s a note from their FS Reader
getting started guide:

Using FSReader with Narrated Audio and Training Materials
With FSReader you have the ability to play, pause, skip ahead, or skip
backwards through narrated audio DAISY materials without actually having
to be in the FSReader user interface. This is GREAT for training purposes.
What this means is that you can be listening to a DAISY book about
training and open a practice document, for example, in Microsoft® Word or
Internet Explorer, or any other application. You can stay in the practice
document and still control FSReader audio with this feature! You no longer
have to press ALT+TAB to move between the FSReader program and back again
to your practice files. Just stay within the practice file, and use the
following keystrokes to control the FSReader audio in the background (if
audio is available in the DAISY book):

Play or Pause Audio (toggle), CTRL+P
Skip Ahead 5 seconds, CTRL+PERIOD
Skip

Hi Ted:

There’s good news on this one.

JAWS supplies most of its training materials in DAISY format. They can be
downloaded through the FS Reader program which comes with JAWS.The
training materials are also supplied on the JAWS DVD.There’s over 11
hours of basic training material available (no, you won’t need to listen to
all of it).

You can either use FS Reader to play the material or your own DAISY player.

You don’t have to switch between your program and FS Reader to pause, resume,
rewind or fast-forward. Here’s a note from their FS Reader getting started
guide:

Using FSReader with Narrated Audio and Training Materials
With FSReader you have the ability to play, pause, skip ahead, or skip
backwards through narrated audio DAISY materials without actually having to
be in the FSReader user interface. This is GREAT for training purposes. What
this means is that you can be listening to a DAISY book about training and
open a practice document, for example, in Microsoft® Word or Internet
Explorer, or any other application. You can stay in the practice document and
still control FSReader audio with this feature! You no longer have to press
ALT+TAB to move between the FSReader program and back again to your practice
files. Just stay within the practice file, and use the following keystrokes
to control the FSReader audio in the background (if audio is available in the
DAISY book):

Play or Pause Audio (toggle), CTRL+P
Skip Ahead 5 seconds, CTRL+PERIOD
Skip Back 5 seconds, CTRL+COMMA
NOTE: Since CTRL+P is also normally used as a hot key within applications to
access the print dialog box, when FSReader is running, this hot key will not
open the print dialog box. Instead, if FSReader is open in the background,
this hot key controls the audio play and pause feature. If you need to print
a document while FSReader is running, use the application's regular menu
commands to print. Normally, that means just press ALT+F to open the file
menu of that program and then press P to open the print dialog box.

Also, you can copy the training materials to your own DAISY player. They
work well on the NLS player. Once downloaded, the training materials are
located in the folder C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\Training. There’s

However, even if you download JAWS, you get the 11 hours of basic
training. This is the same thing that ships on the DVD, and, may be more
current, in some cases.

Once you have JAWS up and running, Press Insert-J to open the JAWS window.
Under the help menu, you’ll find an option that says “Training”. Select
that option and FS reader opens to the table of contents for the Basic
Training. This appears like a Web page. Each “book” that talks about
various features of JAWS is a link you can press Enter on. For example,
when you tab to the link that says, “What is new in JAWS,” and press Enter
on it, FS reader will download the book if it is not present, then, put
you into the book. (if the book has to download, you will need to say Yes
to the “User Account Control” dialog, as the program needs permission to
install the training materials in the proper location.) At first, it will
seem like a Web page, which you can navigate in the usual way. However,
if you press Control-P, it will begin speaking.

Once you get the hang of it, it is a good way to get basic training.

Unless I mis-understood the sales representative, I was informed that
there's no media sent that we have to download JAWS. But yes, with the
packaged version of JAWS, it does come with nice training materials. You
can download the FS Reader training materials though which cover different
topics.

2017-05-16 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
I do need to apologize. You don’t actually have to download the DAISY books if
you don’t want to. They are designed to install into the default JAWS folder,
and they don’t give you a lot of indications as to where they’re going. I
think these are the files JAWS downloads if you use FS reader to install the
downloadable training materials. Instead, you might want a set of mp3 files.
Here’s how to get those:

On the JAWS training downloads page, if you navigate by headings, you will
first hit a heading for DAISY books for JAWS. The next heading is for the mp3
versions. They are in plain .zip files. And, 2 files you might want to listen
to from that section are the getting started files. They are not in the DAISY
section. They cover the installation of JAWS and a few other things. They are
intended for those who install from the DVD, but, the install from DVD is not
too different from the downloadable install. Here are direct links to those
files:

http://www.freedomscientific.com/doccenter/archives/JAWS-MP3/GettingStartedWithJAWS-Side1-MP3.zip

http://www.freedomscientific.com/doccenter/archives/JAWS-MP3/GettingStartedWithJAWS-Side2-MP3.zip

Sorry I didn’t include those earlier.

Hi:

Here’s something I I just learned about these downloads on the training page.

They are executable files that automatically install into your JAWS program
directory. They do ask for administrator priveleges, then, they install and
exit. So, if you do download them, just remember they go into C:\Program
Files\Freedom Scientific\Training by default. Under that training directory,
you can copy each folder onto a DAISY player and they will show up as books.
If you have JAWS installed, FS reader will see them in the table of contents.

Skip Back 5 seconds, CTRL+COMMA
NOTE: Since CTRL+P is also normally used as a hot key within applications
to access the print dialog box, when FSReader is running, this hot key
will not open the print dialog box. Instead, if FSReader is open in the
background, this hot key controls the audio play and pause feature. If you
need to print a document while FSReader is running, use the application's
regular menu commands to print. Normally, that means just press ALT+F to
open the file menu of that program and then press P to open the print
dialog box.

Also, you can copy the training materials to your own DAISY player. They
work well on the NLS player. Once downloaded, the training materials are
located in the folder C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\Training. There’s
only one DAISY book

You can download training materials using your Web browser. Go to

There’s good news on this one.

JAWS supplies most of its training materials in DAISY format. They can be
downloaded through the FS Reader program which comes with JAWS.The training
materials are also supplied on the JAWS DVD.There’s over 11

You can either use FS Reader to play the material or your own DAISY player.

You don’t have to switch between your program and FS Reader to pause, resume,

Using FSReader with Narrated Audio and Training Materials
With FSReader you have the ability to play, pause, skip ahead, or skip
backwards through narrated audio DAISY materials without actually having to be
in the FSReader user interface. This is GREAT for training purposes. What this
means is that you can be listening to a DAISY book about training and open a

FSReader audio in the background (if audio is available in the DAISY book):

Play or Pause Audio (toggle), CTRL+P
Skip Ahead 5 seconds, CTRL+PERIOD
Skip Back 5 seconds, CTRL+COMMA
NOTE: Since CTRL+P is also normally used as a hot key within applications to
access the print dialog box, when FSReader is running, this hot key will not
open the print dialog box. Instead, if FSReader is open in the background, this
hot key controls the audio play and pause feature. If you need to print a

Hope this helps.

2017-05-16 Thread Sky Mundell via Talk
Intresting Vaughn because when I got my copy of Window-Eyes 7.2, they sent me a
downloadable link and the CD for it. I really am greatful for what GWMicro has
done for blind people and they should be commended for their efforts. As far
as JAWS, when I got JAWS 14 in 2013, I got both a authorisation code and a CD
but when I upgraded to JAWS 17 for my tech job in 2015, I just got the code
sent to me electronicly by our local dealer, Canadialog.

Hi Ted:

There’s good news on this one.

JAWS supplies most of its training materials in DAISY format. They can be
downloaded through the FS Reader program which comes with JAWS.The training
materials are also supplied on the JAWS DVD.There’s over 11
hours of basic training material available (no, you won’t need to listen to all
of it).

You can either use FS Reader to play the material or your own DAISY player.

You don’t have to switch between your program and FS Reader to pause, resume,
rewind or fast-forward. Here’s a note from their FS Reader getting started
guide:

Using FSReader with Narrated Audio and Training Materials With FSReader you
have the ability to play, pause, skip ahead, or skip backwards through narrated
audio DAISY materials without actually having to be in the FSReader user
interface. This is GREAT for training purposes. What this means is that you can
be listening to a DAISY book about training and open a practice document, for
example, in Microsoft® Word or Internet Explorer, or any other application. You
can stay in the practice document and still control FSReader audio with this
feature! You no longer have to press ALT+TAB to move between the FSReader
program and back again to your practice files. Just stay within the practice
file, and use the following keystrokes to control the FSReader audio in the
background (if audio is available in the DAISY book):

Play or Pause Audio (toggle), CTRL+P
Skip Ahead 5 seconds, CTRL+PERIOD
Skip Back 5 seconds, CTRL+COMMA
NOTE: Since CTRL+P is also normally used as a hot key within applications to
access the print dialog box, when FSReader is running, this hot key will not
open the print dialog box. Instead, if FSReader is open in the background, this
hot key controls the audio play and pause feature. If you need to print a
document while FSReader is running, use the application's regular menu commands
to print. Normally, that means just press ALT+F to open the file menu of that
program and then press P to open the print dialog box.

Also, you can copy the training materials to your own DAISY player. They work
well on the NLS player. Once downloaded, the training materials are located in
the folder C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\Training. There’s only one
DAISY book that doesn’t have audio and that wouldn’t work on the NLS player,
but, everything else is there.

Hope this helps.

RE: Learning Jaws

2017-05-16 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
Hi:

I haven’t gotten that far, as far as migration.

However, even if you download JAWS, you get the 11 hours of basic training.
This is the same thing that ships on the DVD, and, may be more current, in some
cases.

Once you have JAWS up and running, Press Insert-J to open the JAWS window.
Under the help menu, you’ll find an option that says “Training”. Select that
option and FS reader opens to the table of contents for the Basic Training.
This appears like a Web page. Each “book” that talks about various features of
JAWS is a link you can press Enter on. For example, when you tab to the link
that says, “What is new in JAWS,” and press Enter on it, FS reader will
download the book if it is not present, then, put you into the book. (if the
book has to download, you will need to say Yes to the “User Account Control”
dialog, as the program needs permission to install the training materials in
the proper location.) At first, it will seem like a Web page, which you can
navigate in the usual way. However, if you press Control-P, it will begin
speaking.

Once you get the hang of it, it is a good way to get basic training.

program and then press P to open the print dialog box.

Subject: Learning Jaws

When I start to learn Jaws, I do not want to keep switching back and forth
between my application and an online manual. Can I get the manual on cd and
play it on a cd player? Or, can I download the manual to a
talking book cartridge or flash drive and play it on my talking book
machine? If so, where exactly can I find the manual, so that I can download
it? Thanks. Regards: Ted Larson

RE: Learning Jaws

2017-05-16 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk

Here’s a note from their FS Reader getting started
guide:

Using FSReader with Narrated Audio and Training Materials
With FSReader you have the ability to play, pause, skip ahead, or skip
backwards through narrated audio DAISY materials without actually having to be
in the FSReader user interface. This is GREAT for training purposes. What this
means is that you can be listening to a DAISY book about training and open a
practice document, for example, in Microsoft® Word or Internet Explorer, or any
other application. You can stay in the practice document and still control
FSReader audio with this feature! You no longer have to press ALT+TAB to move
between the FSReader program and back again to your practice files. Just stay
within the practice file, and use the following keystrokes to control the
FSReader audio in the background (if audio is available in the DAISY book):

Play or Pause Audio (toggle), CTRL+P
Skip Ahead 5 seconds, CTRL+PERIOD
Skip Back 5 seconds, CTRL+COMMA
NOTE: Since CTRL+P is also normally used as a hot key within applications to
access the print dialog box, when FSReader is running, this hot key will not
open the print dialog box. Instead, if FSReader is open in the background, this
hot key controls the audio play and pause feature. If you need to print a
document while FSReader is running, use the application's regular menu commands
