[OSM-talk] Custom rendering of a small map
Hi, I'd like to render a map of about a square mile or so of the town of Bromley, in Kent, for the information sheet for my wedding in August (yay!). http://osm.org/go/0EEBWURG I want to make the map, then remove a few bits which I don't need and add stuff to it like bigger labels on some important POIs like the church and the nearest station. I want it to look professional. This is just the sort of thing OSM should be good for, or so I hope :-) My first effort involved an SVG export of the Mapnik image from the main website. This is pretty good; the only problem is that the roads are unnecessarily narrow and so the road names are small and hard to read. I'd like pretty much that map, except with wider roads and bigger text. It would take an age to change it all manually in the SVG. What are my options for a custom render? - Mapnik: requires an incredible amount of setup, according to the wiki page. - Osmarender: It's ugly. Sorry, but it is. - mapgen.pl: Same. - Kosmos: I'm on Linux, and it only really runs on Windows. - Cobra: development seems dead. - Cartagen: It does road labels square on, which I don't like. - Cloudmade: initially, this seemed really promising. They have a variety of styles, and I probably could make one with wider roads, but the Terms of Service are so long and complex, and say don't do anything with this data that isn't your own personal use about three times in different ways, so I assume I can't use it. Any ideas? Is there an online service to which one can submit a Mapnik style sheet and get back a rendering of a small area? Re: [OSM-talk] Custom rendering of a small map
Hi! But if I use their stylesheets and their site to generate maps, they can restrict what I can do with the resulting renderings, right? No. Its a derived work from OSM and as such falls under the CC-BY-SA and only the CC-BY-SA. They can restrict the use of their site, but not of the map. So they can say: Only Person X can download a map from our site. Thats ok. But once the map is downloaded they can't restrict what Person X is doing with the map. Its the whole point of the CC-BY-SA that it grants you those freedoms and they can never get taken away. Note that with the new license (ODbL) this would be ok. Maybe the lawayers writing this thought it would come sooner. :-) http://cloudmade.com/terms_conditions : CloudMade grants you permission to use the CloudMade Site as set forth in these Terms, provided that and for so long as (i) you use the CloudMade Site solely for your personal use; (ii) except as expressly permitted or indicated in these Terms, you do not download, reproduce, redistribute, retransmit, publish, resell, distribute, publicly display or otherwise exploit any portion of the CloudMade Site in any medium without CloudMade's prior written authorization;... Everything in there is ok, because they can have any restrictions they like on their own content, but Non-CloudMade Content obtained through the CloudMade Site is not ok. Because that would include OSM stuff, which they clearly have on their site. If they try to put those restriction on it they are in violation of the license. Also, I object to any company which has terms which say you must agree to break the web: (k) You agree not to deep-link to the CloudMade Site and will promptly remove any links that CloudMade finds objectionable in its sole discretion. Hello! I'm interested in this, too, because I want to draw OSM data in my car computer as a sort of GPS satnav/realtime editor. See libosmscout.sf.net. It is designed as a library for offline map drawing (however not editing) in mobile devices. It is a renderer (and router) optimized for minimum data size and speed. Dane (of Mapnik fame) suggested I use Mapnik with the OSM data plugin. That cuts out the majority of the setup time due to PostGIS install and import of OSM data. Since libosmsocut uses cairo internally and cairo has SVG export this would should work with it, too. But I assume it needs some more time to get the required drawing quality to be usable for generating printable maps (but it is already worth a try :-)).
-- Johannes Hüsing There is something fascinating about science.
In my opinion, placing the information into the OSM database is not the issue. The issue is more of being able to gather the data legally. In areas where the yahoo imagery is of sufficient resolution to allow tracing, I don't see how any entity could put a case together making it illegal for OSM to include the data in the database. Knowledge is not illegal. Trespassing on private property in order to gather GPS traces on the other hand could land you in trouble. The data obtained is not illegal, but rather the manner in which it was obtained is where one runs up against the legal issue. If the land owner has no objections to gathering the GPS traces, then there should be no issues. I have captured and added many ways in private lands, such as refineries[1], mines[2], oil leases[3], and even Department of National Defense bombing ranges[4]. My access to these areas was always with permission from the land owner. I gather the information, upload and enter the information into the database, and then use the subsequent maps in my reports for my employer, and customer. It works out really nicely, as I can create maps of the area where I am working, and then produce reports with background maps that no one else has available. As a bonus, the OSM project gets more information included in the database, and other uses have access to the same maps. I've had queries about where I got the maps from, as other co-workers have looked for maps, and were unable to find them.
landuse = forest (管理されている林か植林地。) landuse = wood (管理や保護されている森。 natural = wood (林。 * leisure leisure = nature_reserve (自然保護区域。) ただ、 「landuse = forest」<「landuse = wood」<「natural = wood」 の順番に、ジャングル度? 「自然保全地域データ」には、 「natural = wood」や「leisure = nature_reserve」がいいのかなと思います。 ___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ja

landuse = forest (管理されている林か植林地。) landuse = wood (管理や保護されている森。 natural = wood (林。 * leisure leisure = nature_reserve (自然保護区域。) ただ、 「landuse = forest」<「landuse = wood」<「natural = wood」 の順番に、ジャングル度? 「自然保全地域データ」には、 「natural = wood」や「leisure = nature_reserve」がいいのかなと思います。 ___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ja ___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ja

There's a link to the WMS capabilities description on this page: http://gisdata.usgs.gov/edc_catalog/fetch_layer_docs.php?LayerName=Boston,%20MA%200.15m%20%28Apr%202008%29 That has four Boston 15cm layers plus the Footprint layer. The latter works fine in JOSM/WMS, but the actual image layers don't. The image layers are specified as queryable=0, which I suspect may be why. They seem to load in QGis, though, which confuses me. Any ideas to get this working? Otherwise, perhaps we can download the GeoTIFFs and serve them with MapServer or something... -- Lars Ahlzen l...@ahlzen.com ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

I have noticed that recently (1-2 months?) the JOSM WMS config that I had for the 15cm and 30cm massgis imagery (I think same pictures, but massgis hosted) stopped working. It's possible there is something wrong with the newer josm builds. You being able to use them in qgis points to something josm-specific. pgpfbv1emfITn.pgp Description: PGP signature ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

To clarify, I use the USGS imagery for Hillsborough County Florida, and I use it in Merkaartor. I haven't figured out how to get it in JOSM, but I know there's supposed to be a way to do it. As an aside, I wish I could find the source of the Google Maps imagery here in Tampa. It was either taken in 2009 or 2010, and it looks like it was 2010. http://seamless.usgs.gov/products/listofortho.php ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

You only have to give it the server URL (in my case http://imsortho.cr.usgs.gov:80/wmsconnector/com.esri.wms.Esrimap/USGS_EDC_Ortho_Florida?) and it downloads the capabilities file and presents you with a list of layers. Merkaartor is nice in many ways. It also loads the USGS GeoTIFFs directly AFAIK. Unfortunately it's not stable on my machine... I'm sure it's just me not getting the URL right or something, but I've found Merkaartor acceptable so I never bothered. Biggest problem is that WMS is slw compared to TMS. I just had some success with JOSM/WMS.
