[Talk-transit] routing application
Hello. I'm trying to develop a web application that can display the route of transport like: http://3liz.fr/public/osmtransport/ I would like to develop with java. but I accept suggestions of other tools for developing. My question is how it should work with maps? - Make inquiries and obtain vector data in xml format? without having to download maps referenced only the area that needs and work on it - Or downloading the raster images (tiles) and load the maps in my database and then rendering with mapnik or Osmarender Thanking your answers and help with the issue. ___ Talk-transit mailing list Talk-transit@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-transit

Re: [talk-ph] mangroves, tidal lands
@maning, I looked at your mangroves at Lian ... the coastline is actually traversing the mangrove area, half on land and half on ocean, but it is still being rendered as whole land. I believe it is because you used the landuse:forest tag while I used natural:wetland tag as suggested by OSM for mangrove areas. The natural:wetland does not render as a green patch when it is on the water side of the coastline. shall I use landuse:forest instead of natural:wetland instead? The company, a subsidiary of AOL, plans to announce Friday morning that it is launching a site in the U.K. based on a project called OpenStreetMap, which is dedicated to user-created mapping. [...] The main MapQuest site will still use mapping data that the company purchases, but the idea is that eventually, MapQuest maps could rely on many users who keep track of their own corner of the world. “We fundamentally believe that community-contributed mapping will be better than any closed platform,” said Jon Brod, the executive vice president of AOL Ventures, Local and Mapping, in an interview with Digits. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

No, the numbers do not change, they only change when you change the zoom level. If you click the link http://open.mapquest.co.uk/, you have a scale of 71 km. If you move the map to the north, the numbers do not change. If you zoom out and zoom in (pressing - and + on the zoombar to the right), the scale changes to 210 km, then to 71 km. If you then move to the equator, the scale stays at 71 km, and again changes to 210 when you zoom out and 71 when you zoom in. That, to me, constitutes no change. And it is incorrect. Coincidentally, the 71 km bar is equal in length to the length of the north border of Equatorial Guinee. Getting the coordinates from OSM I get the coast at 9.7755 degrees east and the east border on 11.3434 east. That's 1.5679 degrees, and with 360 degrees around the globe and 40.008 km at the equator (we're talking 2 degrees north here), that border is just short of 175 km, which is nowhere near the 71 km that the scale bar would suggest. On 09/07/2010, at 1:07 AM, David Carmean wrote: They use a shapefile generated from a filtered snapshot of OSM data--leaving only roads--as a base layer. If they do nothing else but serve this one-time snapshot as a base layer, what are their obligations? My opinion is that since they've changed the data (stripping out the non-road bits) that creates a derived database, which strictly speaking has to be provided. However like with similar situations with the GPL, this may not be as onerous as it sounds - many people package binaries of GPL'd software without putting the source along side it. Per ODBl 4.6b, you would just need to tell anyone asking the filtering algorithm you used - for example remove all ways that don't have a highway=* tag (in machine readable form). Secondly, what if one of their staff, being unfamiliar with OSM but a GIS expert, sees a problem with one or more roads about which they have personal knowledge, and fixes those problems in the GIS data only--then publishing the result as a mapserver layer only. What are their obligations in this case? Making either the derived database or the changes available. Since it's not algorithmic, you have to provide a diff (or the whole derived db) if someone asked for it. If you are doing a one-off import, you'd just need to either have a copy of the original to produce a diff upon request, or be willing to produce a dump of the OSM-based part of the database. If they're not doing a one-off import of OSM data, you'd presumably have some way of merging you local changes with the upstream changes, so a diff should be easy. Third: there is the usual problem/condition (depending on your political leanings) of divergence in the tag values. For example, surface=Dirt vs. surface=dirt, surface=cement vs. surface=concrete, etc. I'd certainly want to fix that, but if I were that agency, I woulnd't have the time/skills to make a 'bot fix back in the OSM database. Strictly speaking you'd have to provide those changes. But if it's a rendering rule then it's not a DB change, and if it's automated you can just provide the algorithm change surface=Dirt to surface=dirt. The two things to note are, 1) like with the GPL, you have to offer it to the recipients, however if it's not interesting (e.g. just filtering), no-one will probably ask, and 2) if it's an algorithmic change, you just have to provide the algorithm. -- James ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-t...@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

Can we include the human readable terms yet? Summary of OpenStreetMap Contributor Terms: - There's a lot I like about it, including that it's using bullet points. Those are easier to wade through. And easier to translate. - Don't put in copyrighted data. It should either be your own work or something that there is clear permission to use. Perhaps just talk about data you don't have permission to submit or something like that. Let's not propagate the copyrighted != non-free misunderstanding. Good point. I've changed http://www.osmfoundation.org/wiki/License/Contributor_Terms_Summary - You still own the bits of data you put in, i.e. you can still use them in other places. - You allow the OpenStreetMap Foundation to publish your bits of data as part of the OpenStreetMap geodata database for others to use. - The OpenStreetMap Foundation can only publish the data under a free and open license. If it fails in that, it has broken a contract with you. Actually, aside from these terms is free and open license defined anywhere as the OSMF is using it? Some define it as licenses approved be the OSI + FSF, but that's obviously not true in our case. It is deliberately not defined. The reasoning is that it is clear when a license is NOT free and open (which is what we really, really want to avoid), but we will all have ideas about what IS a free and open license. That will promote healthy debate and will change over time. It is up to future generations of mappers, not us here and now ... and certainly not by that dd License Working Group. - Until the proposed change-over, that license is the CC BY SA 2.0. When enough existing contributors agree to re-license their data, that license will change to Open Database License 1.0. - The OpenStreetMap Foundation can only pick a new free license if it's approved by the OSMF membership (a foundation of paid-up members) and a 2/3 majority vote of active contributors. You'll be considered an active contributor if you've edited in at least 3 out of the last 12 months and don't take longer than 3 weeks to reply to E-Mail. - If you want attribution you should add your name to the Contributors page. - To the maximum extent possible, neither you nor the OpenStreetMap Foundation are responsible for anything that might happen to folks using your data. FWIW I left this bit out, I don't see whe warranty footnotes need to be in the summary, but perhaps the legally inclined disagree. Not critical, but I think it is worth reassuring new contributors that the language protects them rather than the reverse. This is only a summary and is not legally binding. [OSM-talk] Potlatch 2 Public Alpha
Hi all, (Deep breath) I'm delighted to unveil a test version of Potlatch 2, the all-new, completely rewritten version of OpenStreetMap's online editor. You can play with it at http://www.geowiki.com/ . It talks to the main OSM server and you can make real edits with it. This is a public alpha. This means it's an early version of the software and there are lots of bugs in it. Performance leaves a whole lot to be desired. It _will_ eat your memory, and it may freeze up or crash. Presets for ways don't generally have icons - either that or they're a bit sketchy. There's no documentation. It's an experimental release for people who already have experience using Potlatch and know what they're doing. It's not for newbies - yet! But here's some of the cool stuff it does: - super friendly tagging system - WYSIWYG map display with names on roads and the like - powerful editing tools like 'make right-angled', 'create parallel line' and so on - vector backgrounds so you can manually bring in .osm files, shapefiles and so on - dedicated turn restriction and route editors - really good relations support It's not just a general-purpose editor: you can use it to create your own editor with your favourite presets, icons, backgrounds and rendering. Everything is in easily configurable files, and it talks OAuth so people can log into the OSM server securely from outside. We hope that people will use it to build cycle-specific editors, public transport editors, fix unnamed roads editors... all of that. It's a foundation for people to do more cool stuff with OSM. Potlatch 2 has only been possible thanks to the contributions, in particular, of Dave Stubbs and Andy Allan. Dave has built a terrific architecture for the program in general, way beyond anything I could ever think up, and in particular for the tagging system. Andy has given it a relation editor so much more powerful than P1 ever had, niggled away at a zillion little bugs, and given the project the impetus it needed. Lots of other people have helped as well: Twain47 (Mr Nominatim) contributed some excellent icons, Matt wrote the superb quadrilateralise function, Shaun added Big Concrete Blocks et al to the presets, and loads of others have helped. I'm delighted to only be one of the cast and think it augurs really well for the future. So what now? You _will_ find a really obvious bug about five seconds into using it. I guarantee it. Please use the wiki pages to report it: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Potlatch_2 . There's three pages for filing bugs so we can prioritise which to fix first. It's all open source (obviously) in a proper language (ActionScript 3) with a real framework (Flex) and an open source compiler (Flex Open Source SDK). If you would like to get involved with coding it: \o/, woo and yay. If you'd like just to improve the presets and the stylesheets, \o/ woo and yay too - you don't need to program for that. We have a mailing list, potlatch-dev (http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/potlatch-dev) to talk about development of whatever stripe. And the stylesheet language, MapCSS, is racing on - but more of that anon. Hope you enjoy it. Look forward to the feedback. cheers Richard ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[OSM-legal-talk] using OSM on TV
I'm trying to determine what is required of my company with regard to the on-air broadcast of OSM data. I sell a product used in TV news. Part of my product consists of maps. Sometimes my maps use OSM data. Not always, in fact most clients are not using OSM data. Either way, for the ones that do I need to know what is required. I can't seem to find the requirements by searching the archives or reading the website. I see lots of opinions and suggestions but no hard decisions. I will be adding an OSM link in my application's acknowledgments section stating this app may make use of OSM data, a link to the web site, etc. However, I simply can't guarantee that my customers will attribute OSM during the broadcast. Furthermore, I don't see anywhere that describes exactly what my obligations are. Like I said previously, lots of opinions and suggestions but no hard requirement. Seems like there is a lot of wiggle room if someone simply did not want to attribute OSM in any way. Can someone comment and/or correct me if I'm wrong? Can anyone definitively state what is required with respect to OSM attribution for use in a TV broadcast? I will be doing the following: * letting my customers know we use OSM data * added the usual OSM acknowledgment in my application * add some sort of acknowledgment on my website that my application may make use of OSM data I'm not trying to hide from my customers that I use OSM data. However, some broadcasters simply may not attribute properly due to negligence or just not bothering. What is required of my customers? Is there any sort of authority on this subject? Is there any hard requirements? Seems very ambiguous to me. Very loose. Here are the posts I've read: * http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Legal_FAQ#I_would_like_to_use_OpenStreetMap_maps._How_should_I_credit_you.3F -- Note that the printed map attribution suggests placement in the acknowledgments section and not on the map itself. * http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Open_Data_Licence/Use_Cases -- There's a discussion about TV news attribution. The user may however supply credits on an associated website rather than within the program itself. * http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Open_Data_License/Attribution_-_Guideline -- The user may however supply credits on an associated website rather than within the program itself. -- http://www.fastmail.fm - Does exactly what it says on the tin ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-t...@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

[talk-au] ODBL yet again, but from a pragmatic approach...
As people should now be aware there is currently there is an issue, not so much with ODBL, but the new Terms and Conditions people have to agree to stating that OSM can change to other free licenses in future without requiring consent, while in theory this is a great idea since if there is a compelling reason to change/upgrade the license they can do so without all the problems occurring now, however due to the absence of requiring such a free license to be cc-by compatible (require some form of attribution) this then means any cc-by data would now have to be expunged from the system. Currently we have a fair bit of cc-by data in the system, things like ABS boundaries and in turn any data derived from such data, but so far there is only assumptions on how much data is this exactly, especially in Europe where the assumption is the majority of data has been relicensed or is clean to begin with, so they don't care about anyone else who may be effected by this change, but of course the big unknown is how many contributors will actually agree to this change, especially some of the more prolific editors. The $20mill dollar question however is this, and this is the pragmatic part, what would the state of the map be tomorrow if the license change over happened if all the cc-by data and derived data disappeared. For the purposes of this exercise I'll just make the blind assumption that anything with attribution=* would be considered cc-by, obviously this isn't a perfect test since some people have stripped the attribution information and other data may not have been attributed properly, then again even ODBL data could be tainted, and subtly enough to corrupt large chunks of the database, however this should give us a pretty good idea of what we're dealing with rather than keep making blind assumptions. I found that there is 97,573 ways/nodes/relations within an Australia bounding box with an attribution tag, although there needs to be a lot more interrogation of the data to make this a much more tangible and suitable for making objective decisions based on it. Although I did create a noattribution navit[1] file and a gosmore file[2] to try and help with visualising. The above 98k objects make up about 8M of compressed data[3], while this wouldn't be completely devastating, we're not just talking ABS data, there is a lot more to it like points of interest and national parks and other such things. As Kai wrote in another thread, the loss of data could have a big demoralising effect on anyone that spent time cleaning up or otherwise manipulating that data. Those that are so gung-ho to push through their own agendas might want to push for a small change to the TCs ensure attribution and most of this discussion would disappear, rather than alienating[4] people that contribute data from regional areas that we have enough trouble sourcing by any other means, that is unless they want to come and recruit others that would also do the work for free instead. Although I'm not sure what the point is of moving to another attribution/share-a-like license, if the TCs undermine this, unless of course the intent is to eventually force everyone to go to PD long term, but doing it on the sly hoping no one notices where things are headed.
Re: [Talk-in] [OSM-dev] Display Boundary area using postgresql database
Instead of setting a background colour in the mapnik style sheet, you can set it to transparent, then you just do a limited subset, then load it as a non-base layer in openlayers and see it in action here: http://toolserver.org/~osm/styles/?zoom=2lat=0lon=0layers=B000T0FFF0FFF This is good style for showing different things. I want to use overlays structure from here because i want to show the schools, restaurants, etc. of my area like showing here in overlays. How to do it? But I don't want to change base layer. i want to search the geographical information from the database(PostGIS) and show it as boundary of a area. for e.g. like i want to show the boundary of my college on the map. Re: [Talk-it] Dati da siti internet

Re: [Talk-it] Ban PCN
