[talk-ph] Caviteño: Is Antero Soriano Highway a really major highway?
A user wants to upgrade Antero Soriano Highway which connects Bacoor to Naic from a primary road to a trunk road. I'd like to get the opinion if this is a good move. For reference, Governor's Drive, which connects Naic to Carmona, and Aguinaldo Highway, which connects Bacoor to Tagaytay, are both marked as trunk roads already. ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph

The international page is just there for some guiding, but the countries have to make their own rules. As is the case for Belgium. country: level 2 regions: level 4 communities: level 5 provinces: level 6 arrondissements: level 7 municipalities: level 8 district/deelgemeentes/sections: level 9 This is atleast how it used to be, and what I've always used. I have some comments about this. I think we should not map level 5, because it's more about people than it is about land. Brussels is part of both the Dutch and the French community, and last time I looked at it, it was also properly mapped like that. Brussels is also special in that it doesn't belong to any province. So it ends up with no level 6 and 2 level 5s, and a whole level 4 for itself. But my biggest problem with level 5 is that it's not actually a sublevel of 4, if mapped it would make more sense to be at the same level as the regions. And maybe we should map the 4 language regions too, if you really want to go and map everything. I also have a problem with level 7. We have 3 tpes of arrondissements: - Administrative (43 of them) - Judicial (27 of them) - Voting (depends) I would also like to point out that the name of the tag implies administration levels, so if you would want to map the arrondissements, it should be the administrative level. But I'm not sure adding them to the map adds any value when using the administrative level, as there isn't any real administration at that level. When only considering to map administrative levels, it would also mean that you can't map any sub-municipalities at level 9 because they don't have any administration, at least most don't. But I do think that mapping at level 9 where possible is useful. Maybe some of those things shouldn't be mapped as an administrative, but could be on the map with some other tag. For one, we need the tools to allow people to build and host local maps without asking a committee for permission. Second we need to allow for multiple layers, multiple database and mutiple license in osm, not a single monolithic data structure and server. Tools are needed to allow for better merging and comparison of layers, checking licenses and all that. I see alot of development work as needed to reach this goal. The code is the law, http://www.lessig.org/content/standard/0,1902,4165,00.html and we need to change the code so that these discussions about licensing and all that are less important. Today I have gotten my first version of the renderbotnet server running over ipv6 and you are all welcome to attach a worker process to it.. It is not rendering right now, but the basic connections are running, all without a central server, using ipv6 so you dont need any nat/firewall rules. See my blogpost http://osmopenlayers.blogspot.com/2011/06/get-started-with-renderbot-net.htmland my mail to osmfork http://groups.google.com/group/osm-fork/browse_thread/thread/c623807cd72402a6 We need to get enough CPUs in the renderbotnet connected and then we can use that to share cpus for doing rendering and data processing tasks. Also sharing of edits and chages should be possible using a xmpp chat protocol so that you can either use a modified josm that talks to the botnet or host a local api server that broadcasts your changes on the net. In any case, I see that in the next years we will have a nice solution, and it will be worth the effort. mike ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

I am not saying it is easy. But if you keep most imports as thier own layers and only merge when trusted, look at how git manages many branches, you pull only from trusted branches. In my module TIGER would be its own layer that would not be merged at all, it would be kept separate. You would want tools to compare layers and mark and remove matching items, but I dont see why we need one monolithic system. A hostile layer would just be kept separate and then deleted. Users would be able to pull together layers and create views as needed. mike On Sun, Jun 12, 2011 at 11:51 AM, Nic Roets nro...@gmail.com wrote: On Sun, Jun 12, 2011 at 11:42 AM, Mike Dupont jamesmikedup...@googlemail.com wrote: The code is the law, http://www.lessig.org/content/standard/0,1902,4165,00.html and we need to change the code so that these discussions about licensing and all that are less important. [OSM-talk] Potlatch 2 tutorial part 2 - tracing roads and areas
I have finally got around to completing part 2 of the Potlatch 2 video tutorial. This one is only just over three-and-a-half minutes, and covers tracing roads and areas from Bing aerial imagery. I have also renamed the video (and uploaded a retitled part 1) to “OpenStreetMap for Beginners” to make its intended audience more obvious. Part 1: Add points of interest (4:22): http://vimeo.com/24992100 (apologies for the lack of “HD” version – will upload next week) Part 2: Trace roads and paths (3:32): http://vimeo.com/24984085 The two previous versions of part 1 have been viewed more than 1,000 times since February. However, I believe these (or others along the same lines) should really be more prominent to new users. We get a lot of people registering and never making a single edit, and this is no surprise given that it is not as easy as you might expect to find basic steps for having a go. As a very small step in the right direction, I might be bold and put these under an “Absolute beginners” heading at the top of the Video tutorials wiki page (the videos currently at the top are quite old and include Potlatch 1). This is it for my tutorial efforts for at least the rest of the year. I will shortly be taking a six-month sabbatical from OSM for family reasons. So, if you are thinking “what about the advanced features?”, or “what about a GPS-related tutorial?”, etc., the answer is: JFDI! I look forward to seeing the results! [OSM-talk] Mean high water level rendering
I have recently been mapping tidal areas where data for both mean high water and low water levels are available. I have drawn the MHW level and tagged it as natural=water, natural=riverbank or natural=coastline. Then I have drawn natural=beach, natural=mud, natural=land, natural=wetland etc. up to the MLW level. For example see: http://osm.org/go/0EZaXWxC- First question is does this seem a reasonable way to map MHW and MLW? If so I think I will start a wiki page on how to do it. On the rendering side, what would be really nice is if the render showed a dark blue line around the outside of the natural=water etc. and that it showed on top of whatever else is there ie. natural=mud etc. This way we can see both MHW and MLW just like on OS maps. Not sure if there would be a technical issue with rendering this with the various renderers, it would be nice IMO. -- Borbus. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Yep, I was thinking about things like near where I grew up where there is a 40 foot cliff between one house number and the next. But other road insanity is just as interesting Douglas Street in Clovelly does something like that near the Varna Street intersection. I used to rent at the other end of the street. Presumably result of a land-slip at some stage? Who says the Sydney sandstone basin is stable? Another 'good one' I have found is Como Parade (http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-34.00314lon=151.06853zoom=16layers=M), if you are at the Bindea Street end at the number you are after is at the Woronora Crescent end then you are going to be a little annoyed. I can't point to an example offhand, but I have heard several times from discussions with professional surveyors of instances where the house numbers down a street run out of step with property title boundaries... the first number might cover block one and half of the neighbouring block, so that as you progress down the street every subsequent house number lies across the two adjoining blocks. This situation is apparently far more common than is normally recognised! That make sense given another story I heard - the database of house numbers and the database of land boundaries are completely separate - hmm Outside the urban areas, it is becoming common for street numbers to be based upon an approximate odometer reading (odd and even indicate which side of road.) E.g. 892 XXX Road indicates the property whose nearest point of intersection with XXX Road lies 8.92km from the end of the road. The system has several major weaknesses: my parents' farm is split both sides of a particular road, and the local council has admitted when they assigned the numbers 30 years ago they forgot to reset the odometer! My own property (a corner block) demonstrates another problem (no, I am not assigned zero.) The third problem is that different councils have adopted different conventions for the odd-even split. Mine has even numbers on the right travelling away from the datum. The (different) council responsible for my aforementioned parents' farm wants to make even numbers indicate the left-hand side. In a final piece of GPS-related insanity, the RTA has been setting up those illuminated sign boards around this district (I am aware of at least seven) which are flashing various messages appropriate to the location, but invariably the alternate blink reads Ignore GPS! Unfortunately all are located in particularly dangerous locations to wander out (or park nearby) to take a picture. I wonder it will ever occur to them that helping people (us ;-) fix the GPS data is the best way of fixing the problem, given that the 'system' is so bent that I suspect the only way you can find some things is by knowing where they are in the first place ;-( cheers -- Franc ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au
[talk-au] nearmap LWG minutes
I'm a bit late to the game but the one of the LWG minutes talks about nearmap... From part 4 of the LWG minutes https://docs.google.com/View?id=dd9g3qjp_83gvxm3xgdpli=1 - Automated deriving Nearmap believe that their copyright exists in works derived from their imagery, so this would include the OSM database. Granting derived works wider than CC-BY-SA/ODbL issue, rights be passed to others, under non-restrict terms. OSM offerering a broad license weakens this claim and is damaging to their business model. As a publicly listed company, they need to think very careful about this. They feel that in the near future, a major value of imagery would be the ability to automatically derive features from it. LWG pointed out that it is possible for the provider to restrict how imagery was used, for example to human-driven tracing only using only a limited set of approved apps, and that there was a precedent with Yahoo already in place. This might be attractive to NearMap as it totally nder their control. The free/community license from nearmap lets me run some automated feature extraction to create vector data and allows me to own that copyright and release it under a CC-BY-SA license to everyone without any additional license terms. I am then free to distribute that derived vector data to a government agency regardless of whether that agency already has an agreement with nearmap. Hence a goverment agency that doesn't want to pay nearmap but just wants to run their automated feature extraction could just take this path, the good thing then is that if that data ever gets published its CC-BY-SA. Hopefully nearmap won't try to close this feature off. We wouldn't want them, for instance, limiting deriving data to human-tracing only (something that you can't prove anyway), as automated feature extraction is a potentially helpful tool for OSM contributors. Nor would I want to see them limiting CC-BY-SA derived works to those only uploaded to OSM (just like Microsoft is doing). - Limited term ... It was also suggested that if a future license change was made that was undesirable to NearMap they could terminate the right to derive new data but allow past derivations to remain. Ben responded that this had been actively considered within NearMap but had been felt to be too risky. In the post meeting summation, Mike pointed out that the key thing to consider is that vertical IP, i.e. maintaining rights up a chain imagery - derived vector data - map making, was very important to NearMap's business model but not necessarily good for OpenStreetMap's objectives.

[osm-ve] Becas para Conferencia State of the Map, Septiembre 2011, Denver, USA
Re: [osm-ve] Becas para Conferencia State of the Map, Septiembre 2011, Denver, USA
Hola Carmen.. Re: [Talk-dk] Cyclistic
Re: [Talk-GB] OSM Analysis New Data and bot
So the result of all the discussion about a proposal to develop and deploy a bot which failed to get near to a consensus, let alone agreement is to develop and deploy a bot. The discussion has ignored the basic problem of not having enough mappers on the ground collecting data - so we are back to having a quick technical fix, using other people's data, which threatens to perpetuate us as a closed group of geeks. Rather than write a bot could the technically adept do some analysis of user behaviour in the UK ( e.g users who were prolific and gave up mapping, by length of time ago they ceased mapping) so we can start targetting them with email contact to try and find out why they started, why they gave up, what they liked, what they didn't like, how we can encourage them to start again and so on. Also, we have an image of the week on the main map - why can't we have mapper of the week ( or month) for the UK to recognise great mapping endeavour - or indeed a whole host of awards. Currently there's no way of recognising someone's efforts and I guess it can get pretty difficult to keep motivated if there's no active OSM social scene nearby. Let's start getting creative about solving the basic problem! Regards Brian ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb
[Talk-GB] Landuse polygons created by TimSC: delete them?
There are many landuse polygons in the London area that were created by user TimSC, who has not yet accepted the Contributor Terms. They will all be purged from the database when the licence changes if he continues not to do so. TimSC is now demanding changes to the way OSM is run with the treat of not accepting the CTs. (http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gis.openstreetmap.legal/6102) I believe that, whatever the merits what he wants are, his methods are unacceptable and the community should reject them. I therefore propose to delete every landuse polygon that TimSC created with the hope that they will eventually be replaced with polygons based on high- resolution imagery and ground surveys that we can use going forwards. -- Andrew ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb
Re: [Talk-GB] Landuse polygons created by TimSC: delete them?
I don't normally get involved in licencing stuff, but I disagree with unnecessary data destruction. While I have accepted the CTs, and to be honest don't care one way or the other about ODBL, CC, etc I would urge most strongly that this is *not* done. Tim is a decent guy and has contributed enormously to OSM - contributing many of the scanned OOC maps for one thing. OSM should be about creating, not deleting data. If you have more accurate landuse data than what is already there, by all means contribute it. If not, leave it alone. [Talk-GB] Filter to show only certain ways e.g. bridleways?
I'd find it really useful to filter what is displayed, to limit e.g. to showing only bridleways. Basically, I'm trying to plot cycleable routes through the countryside, and it would be nice to avoid distracting footpaths that I can't use anyway. So a filter which shows e.g. roads and bridleways would be great. Or a filter which filters out foot-only paths (i.e. footpaths in the UK). No need to bother with either. :) The current Potlatch 2 codebase (not deployed yet) can pull vectors directly out of VectorMap District shapefiles. Just load the shapefile in the background, alt-click, and the road comes through. Sounds great. So the only significant job for the bot is to snap road names onto these vectors (together with suitable 'surveyed' tagging). I assume that the person doing this will have to be careful to stitch these new ways into the existing road network correctly? If you wanted to do something helpful towards this, a mirror of the unzipped shapefiles, perhaps with a nice index, would be really useful. ITO are probably not the best people to set up maintain simple mirrors of existing content. Are there not 100 sites where a mirror could be set up and maintained? Why is the OS site not sufficient anyway? Regarding documentation, my contribution is to put a lot of effort into the wiki to improve some of the tag pages in particular to marine/harbours and electricity supply. Hopefully someone will do work on the Potlatch documentation. It's not Potlatch documentation we're lacking, it's OSM documentation for the new user who doesn't even know what Potlatch is. Playing with marine/harbour tag pages, or indeed anything on the wiki, is a bit deckchairs-on-the-Titanic to be honest. Re: [Talk-GB] Filter to show only certain ways e.g. bridleways?

Basically, I'm trying to plot cycleable routes through the countryside, and it would be nice to avoid distracting footpaths that I can't use anyway. So a filter which shows e.g. roads and bridleways would be great. Or a filter which filters out foot-only paths (i.e. footpaths in the UK). Is this what you mean? I think I have interpreted your request appropriately. It displays standard OSM tiles faded slightly and overlaid with bridleways in brown, cycleways in blue and cycle tracks in light blue. http://www.itoworld.com/product/data/ito_map/main?view=120 Regards, Peter Thanks, Mike ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb
Re: [Talk-GB] OSM Analysis New Data and bot
Peter Miller wrote: If this is what you want then it clearly isn't a simple FTP mirror Let's not overcomplicate things. :) All that is needed is that someone a) downloads all the OS VectorMap District files b) unzips them c) places the unzipped shapefiles on an FTP server somewhere d) copies api.flickr.com/crossdomain.xml and puts it at the root of their webserver e) job done :) For bonus points, you can create a trivial find what National Grid tile somewhere is in index, so you can punch in Kidderminster and be told that it's SO87 (and hence that the URL is www.yourdomain.com/SO87/NaturalFeature_Line.shp, or whichever layer you want to load). But that's one call to Nominatim and about 20 lines of Perl so any fule can do that. Steps (a) to (e) require someone with FTP space and bandwidth to spare and I don't have either, or I'd have done it by now. cheers Richard -- View this message in context: http://gis.638310.n2.nabble.com/OSM-Analysis-New-Data-and-bot-tp6455312p6468007.html Sent from the Great Britain mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb

Steps (a) to (e) require someone with FTP space and bandwidth to spare Roughly how much bandwidth do you think would make a worth while contribution? I'm happy to donate what ever I have remaining on my current package and upgrade within reason (with ITOs help or not).
