I don't think that is likely to be forthcoming. Don't forget, too, that Tesco probably didn't create the data themselves - they might have sent a guy out with a GPS to each of their stores, but I doubt it. More likely it's referenced against some external, commercial, protected-up-to-the-eyeballs dataset. Even if someone in Tesco's Customer Contact Centre (or whatever) says yes, they likely aren't aware of upstream copyright issues. I'd have thought that Tesco would only benefit from having their stores shown on OSM maps, so I don't see why they wouldn't give permission (to the extent that they can) for us to use their data -- if we can manage to persuade the right person to consider the question. The coordinates are indeed problematic, but even without them the data could be useful. I agree that an automated import isn't the way to go here, but some sort of keep-right-esq tool that highlights places where a store is expected but is not present in OSM would be really useful. Given aerial imagery and an approximate store location, it will often be possible to identify the right building and map it out, adding the store details from the Tesco data. As for finding the locations, the address may give enough of a clue to local mappers. Maybe this could even be converted to approximate coordinates by Nominatim? More useful might be the postcodes. Since it seems we now have centroid coordinates available via an ONS dataset (see http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-gb/2012-October/014055.html ) we could presumably use them to locate each store with reasonable accuracy. Would there be any copyright / database right issues with doing this, assuming Tesco give their permission to use the addresses they hold, and we're able to use the postcode data from OSN under the Open Government License? Should we be marking block numbers, etc., to provide a max / min for each block? Doing anything in OSM as a single user in an inefficient way of making a significant impact. This is why we call it crowd sourcing :) Yes, you can use an address interpolation[1] to do a whole block at a time. Here in the US I kind of feel like this is a waste of time though since Nominatim already pulls in what is essentially an address interpolation from external TIGER data. So if I'm going to add address information I might as well make it better than what is already available. But in places without such external data I think address interpolations are a decent way of getting address coverage done quickly. Although I'm not sure if anything besides Nominatim really supports interpolations... Beyond that, I think it comes down to the same thing it always comes down to. More mappers. Specifically for address data I think there is a lot we can do to simplify the process. For example, if all I want to do is add an address and maybe some contact info to a POI that already exists, why do I need a full featured geospatial data editor like P2 or JOSM? Why not a simple web form? I think as OSM gets into more maintenance of existing data as opposed to adding of new data, simple tag editors will be a good thing anyway. Oh and KeypadMapper is definitely a winner. I was able to collect about 120 residential addresses on a single stroll around my neighborhood. It took me longer to process the data once I got home but that's because I ended up drawing outlines of each house as I placed the address node from the KeypadMapper file. Hi David, To be honest I haven't been following the discussion but I agree that it is important to sort this out so I'm going to provide my thoughts. Among other things OSM in interested in mapping the location and topology of thoroughfares which exist on this planet. Accompanying this is attributes which provide more details about the through fare. These attributes include, * nomenclature of the thoroughfares (name, *name, name:lang, ref, etc.) * legal regulations on the use of the thoroughfares (access, maxspeed, maxheight, maxweight, turn restrictions) * type of use * highway classification (residential, primary) describes for which purpose the road is mainly used for * which vehicles is it primarily intended to support (in OSM inferred by the key and sometimes value, such as railway=, highway=, highway=footway, bicycle=, maxheight:physical=, etc.) * physical attributes (surface, bridge, tunnel, width, lanes) * make up of the surface's top layer * what is the top layer material covering this thoroughfare concrete, asphalt, clay, grass, soil, rock * what is the form of that material covering this thoroughfare pavers (large 25m2 slabs, medium 0.25m2 blocks, small bricks), rubble (large bear sized boulders, head sized rocks, or grape sized pebbles), compacted/solid * what is the stability/friction of the surface (do I need a 4wd to prevent sliding out?), perhaps can be implied by surface x form. These attributes need to be non-subjective so that they can be applied universally, collaboratively and consistently across the globe. They also need to be truthfully representations of what actually exists on the ground. I think it is best to describe the real world with attributes like these. It is an accurate representations yet allows users to decide higher lever questions like I only have a standard 2wd car, not a 4wd one. Should I take road A or B? by looking at the attributes which are important to them, be it traction of the road surface (ice, clay, dirt...), smoothness (frequency and amplitude of the surface profile). This way both a 4 wheel drive Ferrari and a 4wd Jeep can make a good determination of whether they should take route A or B. Furthermore, the current tracktype grades although not well defined essentially measure the compactness of a surface. If you try to bring 4wd only into the mix it could become complicated as you can very well have paved track or heavily compacted hardcore but so uneven and with large gaps that you would need the large wheels and ground clearance of a 4wd to traverse; yet have another unpaved uncompacted track with lack of hard materials with the same requirement on a 4wd due to uneven ground. This isn't as you suggest, bad data that needs to be fixed by mappers. In summary, I would ask you to pull out attributes of a thoroughfare which make it 4wd only and tag those instead. signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

Þá tók ég eftir að skráin með ljósastaurum er ekki bara með ljósastaurum í Reykjavík, heldur allt höfuðborgarsvæðið (fyrir utan mesta hluta Garðabæjar og Mosfellsbæjar, og nokkur hverfi í Kópavogi). Þá ákvað ég að endurnýta https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Iceland/LUKR til að fjalla um nýju gögnin. Ég hef áhuga á að setja inn ljósastauragögnin sem fyrst af þeirri ástæðu að gögnin eru líklegast sett inn út frá loftmyndum sem eru nákvæmari en gervihnattamyndirnar sem BING útvegar af svæðum utan Reykjavík. Þá er hægt að nota t.d. ljósastaurana sem mælikvarða til að reikna út gróft offset á gervihnattamyndunum. Stikkprufur fyrir Reykjavík benda til þess að gögnin séu í nokkuð góðu samræmi við loftmyndirnar úr Reykjavík sem eru þarna þá þegar. Ljósastauragögnin innihalda 35.293 nóður en núna í OSM eru 175 highway=street_lamp nóður á höfuðborgarsvæðinu. Samkvæmt history á þessum gögnin eru flestar nóðurnar settar inn af Mister Kanister og hinar eru frá mér. Til að einfalda import hef ég spurt Mister Kanister hvort ég megi eyða nóðunum hans í stað þess að merge-a þær handvirkt. Ljósastauranóðurnar úr LUKR skiptast niður á sveitarfélög með þessum hætti (samkvæmt _SVF_ lyklinum): Hefur ekki þennan lykil = 296 = Reykjavík = 26.529 1000 = Kópavogur = 2.685 1100 = Seltjarnarnes = 823 1300 = Garðabær = 340 1400 = Hafnarfjörður = 4.070 1603 = Álftanes = 499 1604 = Mosfellsbær = 51 Einnig hef ég skoðað lyklana og sé engan sem hægt er að þýða yfir í gagnlegt tag fyrir utan _FLOKKUR sem er merking LUKR fyrir ljósastaur (eða ljósastólpa eins og þeir kalla þetta). Við importið verður öllum lyklum eytt *nema* þeim lyklum sem samfélagið vill halda til haga (skv. import guidelines á að gera þetta), en þeir fá þá forskeytið ,lukr:'. Að lokum verður highway=street_lamp bætt við nóðurnar. Ekkert einkvæmt númer fylgir nóðunum svo að uppfærslur verða að fara fram á þann hátt að láta staðsetninguna auðkenna hverja nóðu. Fyrir importið óska ég eftir að fá að komast í OSM aðganginn sem LUKR stígagögnin voru sett inn frá, svo ég þurfi ekki að stofna annan fyrir þetta import og önnur LUKR import í framtíðinni. Hi Simon, o.k. I think, in french (Switzerland), the capital letters are without an accent. I will change these names in OSM. But, now I've found an other Problem: In Schmitten FR [1] is a road in GWR named as an short-name: F. X. Müllerstrasse. The real Name is Franz Xaver Müllerstrasse. And in OSM it is named like this. Till now, I thinked, we shouldn't use short names in OSM. I hope, this is still right. [Talk-de] fixme sinnvoll?
Moin!

-- Daniele Venzano http://www.brownhat.org ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

Panikai nav pamata :). Ceļu klasifikāciju nosaka MK noteikumi. Pagaidām ir spēkā 1104 (2009), kurus var apskatīt, piemēram, šeit: http://www.likumi.lv/doc.php?id=198589 . Domāju, ka lv-ceļu lapas pdf-i ir veidoti 1:1 no šiem noteikumiem.
Oops, the original message below was supposed to go to the talk-ca group but I forgot to re-address the message. I'm not sure that I understand why we would expect to see 100% of the Canadian land mass covered by shapes at admin level 6 or any other admin level. Not all of the country is organized and governed at that level. Once the areas that do fall under admin level 6 are defined and displayed, you'll end up with holes where the cities are, but if you add cities to the map, the holes get filled. Now if you were talking about admin levels 8 (city/town/village/hamlet boundaries) and 10 (neighborhoods), I would suggest that these would overlap, since the neighborhoods are a subset of the city. Cities in Alberta are not a subset of a municipal district. BTW, Pierre thank you very much for your help and guidance thus far. I'm making headway on adding features that I have long wanted to ensure were part of the map. When we look at a map of boundaries at level 6, we expect all the territory to be covered. See http://layers.openstreetmap.fr/?zoom=5lat=52.59638lon=-118.12528layers=B00FFT If Edmonton was not defined at this level, this would create problems. There were discussions before that we both are note aware off. Some people may also know how contributors have addressed this problem in other countries. We should not leave any hole at level 6 and cover all the province territory. Making a search throug Nominatim, it still works fine. From this point, you should discuss this on the talk-ca list before trying to make any modification. Okay, what's the story with this concept? The City of Edmonton is an entity unto itself. It falls under admin_level 8 as per the wiki (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Admin_level) as a city. It is not part of any other administrative jurisiction (i.e. part of a county or other entity) Admin_level 6 defines the boundaries of counties, regional municipalities, improvement districts, etc. Would not having 2 relations, one that defines the city (admin_level 8) and another that defines a non-existent entity (admin_level 6) be considered tagging for the renderer (just to fill a perceived hole)? -- James VE6SRV ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca

On Fri, Nov 9, 2012 at 5:50 PM, Pierre Béland infosbelas-...@yahoo.fr wrote: This is a hierarchical system were you first define level 6 boundaries. Then you can split level 6 in many level 8 boundaries. In such a system, you dont leave holes at the upper level when you only have one child. But for a hierarchy to work, each level above needs to related to the one below. I live in house number 28 on Curlew Crescent in the urban area of Sherwood Park in the specialized municipality of Strathcona County in the province of Alberta, in the country of Canada on the North American continent on the planet Earth. Each of those levels is directly related to the one on either side of it. To do what you suggest for the city of Edmonton would be similar to the below. Shaw Conference Center, 9797 Jasper Ave Northwest, in the city of Edmonton, in the county of Edmonton in the province of Alberta, in the country of Canada on the North American continent on the planet Earth. The problem there is that there is no county of Edmonton. The city of Edmonton is the equivalent of a county as far a looking at the map is concerned. Here's an accurate description: Shaw Conference Center, 9797 Jasper Ave Northwest, in the city of Edmonton, in the province of Alberta, in the country of Canada on the North American continent on the planet Earth. You have examples elsewhere. Paris, France, for example has three relations fort levels 6,7,8. - level 6 : http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/71525 - level 7 : http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/1641193 - level 8 : http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/7444 I do not know the administrative realities of Paris, France. It may actually be part of each of these levels. For the province of Alberta, administrative limits have to be established for both level 6 (county) and level 8 (municipalities). For Edmonton, since the county contains only one city, I have duplicated the relation. The two Edmonton relations, level 6 and level 8 define the same area. - level=6 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/2564500 - level=8 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/2563550 As above, there is no county of Edmonton. My argument is that creating a shapefile defining a non-existent county just to put a colour on the map is tagging for the renderer. Any municipality declaring itself a city effectively removes itself from the surrounding municipal district. The city of Leduc has no relation to the county of Leduc. The village of Leduc was incorporated in 1899, then changing to a town in 1905. All that time it was part of the county of Leduc, but in 1983 when it declared itself a city, it became an entity separate from the county of Leduc. There may be places where a city can be part of a county (ie. Spokane, Washington is part of Spokane County), but that is not the case in Alberta. I believe Saskatchewan is the same as Alberta where the cities are not part of the adjoining rural municipalities. I'm not sure what the status is across the whole of Canada.
