Re: make Firefox Thunderbird mouse accessible

2016-01-09 Thread john s via Talk
Neville, I tried these steps and no go. I'm running Windows 7, 32
bit and WE 9.1. With WE running, about:config wouldn't respond. I
had to exit WE and use NVDA to accomplish the steps. But, no go.

Use the three steps below to make both Firefox and Thunderbird
accessible with the mouse just like they used to be. I was able to
use WE to make the necessary changes in Thunderbird but needed
sighted assistance for Firefox. For some reason WE kept loosing
speech in the case of Firefox but maybe NVDA would work.

A similar method has been around for a while but never had any
success with it but these three steps really work. In short, I was
amazed with the change in mouse accessibility the alterations made.

Hopefully, someone can come up with a method to make Chrome mouse
accessible as well.

Unfortunately it is not known for sure whether this technique will
work as well under W8 and W10 as it does under W7 32 and 64 bit. If
you do try it under W8 or W10, please inform the list of your
results. i.e. Either positive or negative.

This is the three steps needed to fix the mouse cursor problem.

The third step is the new one. You do have to arrow down many times
to find it. A lot do seem to sound the same, so be careful you get
the correct one to change.

1. Open the Configuration Editor. In Firefox, enter
about:config
in the address bar. In Thunderbird, go to the Tools menu and
navigate to Options, Advanced, General, then Config Editor.
2. Once in the Configuration editor, press TAB until you are in the
list of options.
3. Pressing UP or DOWN ARROW will move you between options or typing
the first few letters of an option's name will move you to a
specific option in the

list.
the following are entries to search for:

gfx.direct2d.disabled
if the boolean value is set to false, press the enter key to toggle the
value to true.

layers.acceleration.disabled
if the boolean value is set to false, press the enter key to toggle the
value to true.

layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled
if the boolean value is set to true, press the enter key to toggle the
value to false.

press control+w to close the configuration window.
restart Thunderbird/Firefox.

Neville, I have tried making the suggested changes using WE 9.3 from
Microsoft 365 and Windows 10. But with Tbird, no effect, still no mouse
at all. Clearly something is very wrong. I previously used that simple
and often scorned upon client, Outlook express and it was simple to use,
very fast, and did everything I needed. Now, I am forced to use a piece
of software that is awkward at best and I won't say the worst.

Re: make Firefox Thunderbird mouse accessible

2015-12-28 Thread Joseph C. Lininger via Talk
I'm running Windows 7, but I doubt that makes a difference. It looked to
me like something Mozilla did. My guess, and that's all it is since I'm
not a Mozilla developer, is that the config option was placed there in
preparation for some new functionality. Then they added that
functionality in about Version 38 (that's when the mouse thing broke for
me in Thunderbird anyway) and switched it on with the config option.
It's possible they did something else for different versions of Windows,
and that the versioning and config option switch is different between
Firefox and Thunderbird. The fix didn't work for me in Firefox, but it
did in Thunderbird.

If you are using an older version of Thudnerbird (I was using 31 prior

Upgrading (I upgraded to the latest version) switches it to True. You
have to go in and disable it after upgrading.

Hi Rick,
That is a real shame that the modifications to Firefox and Thunderbird
don't work under W10. It now appears that W7 users, both 32 and 64
bit,are the only ones to benefit because W8 is not improved either.

I am now having second thoughts about moving up to W10 prior to the
deadline.

Maybe it depends on the person's environment under Windows 8 and 10? As I am
running a 64-bit version of Windows 10 on my 17 inch Asus, I'll try Firefox
at least and see what happens.

Re: make Firefox Thunderbird mouse accessible

This worked for me, but there's something people need to know about it.
If you are using an older version of Thudnerbird (I was using 31 prior
to upgrading), the third option will appear set to False as we want it.
Upgrading (I upgraded to the latest version) switches it to True. You
have to go in and disable it after upgrading.

Re: make Firefox Thunderbird mouse accessible

2015-12-27 Thread net bat via Talk

you don't have to wait for the deadline.
the chances are the installation files have already been downloaded to your
computer.
you would have to open folder options where the options are to unhide system
files.
then look for a windows bt folder in the rood directory. this is where the
windows 10 files would be downloaded. they should all be there by now.
microsoft is downloading these files while your computer is idle. it should
have the setup.exe file in this folder.
so it probibly would still install windows 10 if you copied them to a flash
drive.

***
you could download the creation tool and burn it to dvd or to a flash drive
and install it later.
i don't know if it would install after the deadline next july. but you would
have the files.

from what i have read this tool also includes the second upgrade

That is a real shame that the modifications to Firefox and Thunderbird

Neville, thanks for your efforts. I really don't know why it should be
that some people have such good luck with such modifications, and
others, like me, never get anywhere. I still get nothing but a line
with the word "file," and the first line of the message, and a ding
below that. If anyone else can give me any ideas as to why this should
be, please let me, as well as the rest of us know.

All I can say is that if ISquared and all other screen reading
developers can find no way to deal with this new method of handling the
mouse pointer, we all better hope and even pray that this method doesn't
become too popular among commercial or open source application
developers, because if it does, there goes any possible use of a mouse
pointer for speech access. This issue simply has to be addressed and
dealt with, not just accepted by screen reader developers.

This should be put on the knowledge base.

Thanks so much Neville. I had taken the first 2 steps, but the third one

Re: make Firefox Thunderbird mouse accessible

2015-12-26 Thread Neville via Talk

Hi Larry,
These modifications work in W7 32 bit but no idea if they make a
difference in W8 or W10 or even 64 bit.

What OS are you using?

As we are being pested to move to W10, it would be a real shame if this
technique did not make a difference under this OS.

A case of one step forward and two steps backward if it does not.

Neville.

Hi Listers,

Use the three steps below to make both Firefox and Thunderbird
accessible with the mouse just like they used to be. I was able to
use WE to make the necessary changes in Thunderbird but needed
sighted assistance for Firefox. For some reason WE kept loosing
speech in the case of Firefox but maybe NVDA would work.

A similar method has been around for a while but never had any success
with it but these three steps really work. In short, I was amazed
with the change in mouse accessibility the alterations made.

Hopefully, someone can come up with a method to make Chrome mouse
accessible as well.

In Thunderbird, go to the Tools menu and navigate
to Options, Advanced, General, then Config Editor.
2. Once in the Configuration editor, press TAB until you are in the
list of options.
3. Pressing UP or DOWN ARROW will move you between options or typing
the first few letters of an option's name will move you to a specific
option in the

list.
the following are entries to search for:

gfx.direct2d.disabled
if the boolean value is set to false, press the enter key to toggle the
value to true.

layers.acceleration.disabled
if the boolean value is set to false, press the enter key to toggle the
value to true.

layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled
if the boolean value is set to true, press the enter key to toggle the
value to false.

press control+w to close the configuration window.

Re: make Firefox Thunderbird mouse accessible

2015-12-26 Thread Larry Higgins via Talk

Neville,

Sorry I didn't include that info in my previous message.

I am using WE 9.3 with windows 8.1 64 bit, and from all indications, I
am using the versions of both Firefox and Thunderbird adapted for the
64 bit operating systems as well.

Like I said before, I think AI Squared really needs to sit down with
someone who can either explain just what makes this particular take on
the technology so wonderful, if not absolutely necessary, and maybe read
them the riot act on these kinds of issues. This cannot stand! End of
short rant .
